My Jaws story
Great article on how the movie Jaws shaped societal views on sharks as hunters of humans, that sadly, continues to this day. I want to share some memories of how Jaws influenced me. After I saw Jaws (first run, in the theater with my mom; I think it was Dayton Mall Cinema 2) I was scared to death of sharks, sometimes to the point of imagining that a shark was going to grab my leg in the deep end of the pool. One of my most vivid memories of being afraid of sharks was on a family vacation to Florida in 1976. My parents went in the Gulf to swim. My sister Amy Weber and I were literally hysterical on the beach, screaming at them to come out because we were afraid they would be eaten and we would be orphans! (BTW, this was the same vacation I watched Psycho in the hotel room and was afraid to take a shower and my first time flying on a jet plane after going with my mom to Dabel theater to see Airport 1975. Iâm sure they must have whipped out the benadryl on that flight. Note to parents: we might have been a little young for these kinds of movies and did you take me to see the original Airport in 1970 when I was 5? If so, thank you because it has shaped my love of scary things as well as made me the lovable neurotic I am today! ) Even though sharks terrified me, at the same time they fascinated me as well. I bought every magazine I could find on sharks- and there were plenty in the late 70âs. I read Peter Benchleyâs novel over and over. Some heavy reading for a 10 year old. I would recite monologues from the movie into my cassette recorder (I was kind of a nerd). I knew Quintâs USS Indianapolis speech by heart. I still get a little queasy swimming in the ocean but I like to think I have a better understanding of sharks and that they are not âhuntingâ humans. They just think we look like sweet tasting seals or tangy turtles or brightly colored and delicious tasting fish (you decide which one you are) đ . I respect sharks and know that when I go into the ocean, I am on their turf. They might decide to bite me. It is up to me if I take that risk or not. Jaws will be playing on the big screen this summer in the city where I live and I will be there even though Iâve seen it more times than I can count. Even though I know that sharks donât hunt humans, I anticipate some nervousness when I am at the pool later this summer. And thatâs okay. In fact, itâs pretty awesome! Fathom Event: Jaws 40th Anniversary
I botched the first opportunity I had to watch Jaws back in high school. I was at boarding school and during Homecoming weekend there was a big all-around campus festival happening which included a screening of Jaws at the pool. So I did get to see part of this movie while floating helplessly in an inner tube but my poor social skills and crippling inability to swim forced me to leave before long. To be honest I donât even remember what part I saw, I just know that it was the earlier beach scenes, possibly before the little boy gets devoured.
Annnnywho, Iâve now rectified that by getting to watch the 40th anniversary re-release in theaters. I love watching classic films on the big screen, and as the movie started I tried to envision the sense of thrill that must have transpired for audiences back in 75Ⲡwhen they were seeing Jaws for the first time. The audience I saw it with was small but also engaged. It wasnât a case of people being callous and ridiculing an old movie for having cheesy effects, it was just people taking in what is considered to be the first major âSummer Blockbusterâ. I myself was happy that the film managed to make me hop out of my seat a few times even though I know the gist of the plot beats. I thoroughly enjoyed the partnership of Dreyfuss and Scheiderâs characters and the cinematography was actually very impressive. I think the only qualms I have is the inconsistency with light, particularly in that opening kill scene, is it evening or dawn? Night time or day time?
But if this film is the reason so many people feared the waters for so long, then times have certainly changed because all I want to do now is go take a nice long dip in the ocean and chill on the sand with my back to the sun. I live in Southern California and Iâve just recently learned how to swim, and this movie really just rejuvenated my love of being out on the beach and swimming. I wouldnât want to meet a shark but I am so much more trusting of myself in the water that I canât stay away from it now.
In conclusion, itâs a great thrilling movie. Hereâs my favorite moment in the film:

Here's the color version of the Quint drawing. You can see the pencil version here, and the rough version here. I flipped the rough before I did the final pencils.

Jaws and the almost erasure of my existence
Forty years ago, a young man took a young woman on a date to see the newly released film âŞJawsâŹ. Halfway through, the young lady was so damn pissed that her date had the GALL to make her watch such a horrific movie, she started a massive argument that almost ended their relationship.
Thankfully, Jaws did not ruin my parents' eventual nuptials and, furthermore, my existence on Earth. In celebration of the movie that almost erased my life, I look forward to seeing my favorite shark's toothy grin this evening on the big screen.
Many thanks to Janet Dobie for not punching my dad in the face on their date and to Dave Dobie, who didn't run at the first sign of a maybe-crazy future wife. And to think, horror movies are my favorite genre! Here's to the things that scare us ... and to love that lasts a lifetime.
