Minor Houses: Gaia
Playable Minor Houses Located on Gaia
Please keep in mind that the mythos attached to each house describe a general ethnicity for the overall family, though those ethnicities do no actually exist in Athena. Marriages, birth children, and adoption make it easier to bring more ethnicities into the houses, but we are not tolerating the whitewashing of minor houses. If you need help finding a playby, there will be a list of face claim suggestions provided on the canon list.
House Amalur | Sworn to House Ladon Senate Representative is Minister of Development Name based on Basque mythos
The Amalur family proudly traces their roots back to the birth of humanity and claims distant relations to the Ladons themselves. They are an old, stable, and respected house with strong loyalties to the Ladons. Before and throughout the war, they leveraged their large landholdings and workforce to maintain their lands and power. The Amalur family produces ~15% of the crops that go into the Gaian food supply, the most of any single family.
Portrayal Suggestions: Steffy Argelich, Javier Bardem, Úrsula Corberó, Penelope Cruz, Oriol Elcacho, Jessica Gomes, Jon Kortajarena, Blanca Padilla, María Pedraza, Marina Perez, Sara Sampaio, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Gonçalo Teixeira, Paz Vega, Andres Velencoso, River Vipperi
House Avilix | Sworn to House Lazarevic
Name based on Mayan mythos
The Avilix family completely lost control of their land holdings on Gaia during the war, but were able to continue operating a lunar homebase on Empyrea. After the war ended, the Avilix family settled on their new lands and became well respected artisanal alcohol merchants. Their products - wine, liquor, cider - are held in high regard among the elite.
Portrayal Suggestions: Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Boneta, Chloe Bridges, Daniela Cosío, Venezia Cruz, America Ferrera, Eiza González, Diane Guerrero, Salma Hayek, Alfonso Herrera, Oscar Isaac, Issa Lish, Diego Luna, Karla Souza, Danny Trejo, Ed Weeks
House Kanati | Sworn to House Ladon Name based on Cherokee mythos
For their efforts and loyalty in the Great War, the Kanati family was given a title and the lands of the Avilix family on Gaia. This has caused continuous tension between the two noble families since the end of the war. As one of the newest noble families, the Kanati family has flourished with their newfound opportunities in the meat production industry.
Portrayal Suggestions: Tanaya Beatty, Irene Bedard, Ashley Callingbull, Haatepah Clearbear, Forrest Goodluck, Kiowa Gordon, Michael Hudson, Julia Jones, Greg Kheel, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Matten, Alex Meraz, Amber Midthunder, Bronson Pelletier, Q’orianka Kilcher, Marisa Quinn, Martin Sensmeier, Michael Spears, Booboo Stewart
House Lyons | Sworn to House Ladon Senate Representative is Minister of Labor Name based on Gallic mythos
The Lyons family are well-known trendsetters on Gaia, having a guiding hand in the fashion and textile industry. They produce everything from the sturdy cotton clothes of mining workers to the prison jumpsuits used on Tartarus to the high fashion seen on runways through the careful curation of silk garments. During The Great War, they pivoted to the production of cotton bandages, which only helped to grow their fortune.
Portrayal Suggestions: Sigrid Agren, Gabriel Aubry, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Marine Deleeuw, Jean Dujardin, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Louis Garrel, Felix Gesnouin, Eva Green, Adèle Haenel, Constance Jablonski, Vincent LaCrocq, Yumi Lambert, Mélanie Laurent, Pio Marmaï, Oliver Martinez, Pierre Niney, Patrick Petitjean, Clémence Poésy, Baptiste Radufe, Adrien Sahores, Nathan Saignes, Lea Seydoux, Gaspard Ulliel, Marine Vacth, Yada Villaret, Aurélien Wiik, Lambert Wilson
House Ruhanga | Sworn to House Sikandar Senate Representative is Minister of Education Name based on Bantu mythos
The Ruhanga family fared poorly in the Great War because, while they had large swathes of land on Gaia initially, they ultimately lacked the manpower to defend it and had to relinquish most of it to Ladon families. Today, the Ruhanga family maintains a preparatory academy and finishing school for the wealthy and elite on Gaia. The family also manages control of a smaller jumpgate that was built after the end of the Great War as a way for Sikandari citizens to have greater access to Gaia.
Portrayal Suggestions: Ajak Deng, Edi Gathegi, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Boris Kodjoe, Aamito Lagum, Leila Nda, Lupita Nyong'o, Davidson Obennebo, Ty Ogunkoya, Nykhor Paul, O’Shea Robertson, Leonardo Taiwo, Duckie Thot, Alek Wek

Villa K in Mijas
27 Oct 2020
Villa K
Design: Marion Regitko Architects
Location: Mijas, Malaga, Spain
The design of Villa K has been a collaboration between Marion Regitko Architects and UK based designers Soo Wilkinson & John Grant of Igloo Design. Their holistic approach to the interior and exterior spaces of the villa, along with the continuity of materials and finishes has resulted in a seamless flow throughout.
Space Villa K is situated high in the hills above Mijas. The house itself is organised around a raised ‘viewing platform’ which is slightly pushed into the top of a hill. The design of the house is a response to both the plot and the amazing surrounding views. The plot is very steep, oriented to the south and to the west, with views of the sea and the Ronda mountain range. A lovely pine tree wood occupies a part of the site.
The resulting design is an ‘L’ shaped platform. In one wing of the ‘L’ there is an open living space, including kitchen and dining, which overlooks the swimming pool and from which you can also enjoy spectacular sea views.
The other wing of the ‘L’ is reserved for the more private and quiet area of the bedrooms. There are four hotel-like bedrooms that are each with en-suite bathrooms.
The bedrooms all enjoy beautiful mountain views to the west and are embedded into the small pine tree wood. Wherever you are on the viewing platform you can step out onto the interconnected shaded terrace, inviting you to wander around the house.
The lower level is cut into the hill creating a large exterior foyer, lounge and garden. The gym, cinema room and service areas are also located on this level.
Access from the lower level onto the upper platform is via a generous wooden staircase which leads right into the center of the house. Visual screening between the public and private areas, on both levels, is provided by the fine vertical rods that surround the stairs. The lower level is cut into the hill creating a large exterior foyer, lounge and garden. The gym, TV room and service areas are also located on this level.
Materials and finishes Entering through the front door leads you into an open plan living area that spans the entire length of the swimming pool outside. This area consists of a sunken living room that features a large bespoke modular sofa, centered around a cluster of artfully arranged coffee tables and a luxurious loom rug that mirrors the green of the surrounding pine trees. The space is illuminated by a sculptural metal lighting configuration suspended overhead.
The dining area reflects the heat of the outside landscape with burnt orange chairs arranged around a minimal square dining table that comfortably seats eight people. Suspended over the dining table hangs an eye-catchingLED pendant light which lends the space a distinctly 21st century aesthetic.A state-of-the-artkitchencompletes the space. The entire open-plan living area is surrounded by glazed sliding windows that can be opened up to create an indoor/outdoor living experience and allows for the breathtaking external vistas to be enjoyed from any perspective.
The design team has used slate to introduce a contrasting texture to the white render and glazing throughout the house. The honey tones of the oak wood that has been used on the external sliding shutters, handrails and stair treads were inspired by the oak tone of the kitchen and bring an earthy warmth to Villa K.
The four identical bedrooms feature bespoke fitted wardrobes. Linear led lighting illuminates the white floor to ceiling voile drapes and headboards while the walls are adorned with abstract digital artworks that add a pop of colour to the otherwise monochrome feel. Each room has a sliding oak door that opens onto the viewing platform. The en-suite bathroom walls are clad in a porcelain marble-effect tile that provide a minimalist backdrop for the contemporaryblack fittings and sink units.
Sustainability The house works with its environment, not only in relation to the amazing views and choice of materials, but also in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. Natural protection against heat gain is provided by generous cross ventilation throughout the house. Sun penetration is prevented by large vertical and horizontal shading elements in front of the windows. Green energy, produced by solar panels on the roof, provides self-sufficiency during the daytime. The air-conditioning and under floor heating systems are powered by high efficiency heat pumps.

Chapter Twelve : ORLANDO NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING
June 11, 2016. Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was hosting its weekly Saturday event “Latin Night. Around 2:00am on June 12, last call for drinks were announced to about 320 people inside the club. At the same time, a mad man, who-shall-not-be-named as he doesn’t deserve to be talked about as a person ever again, arrived by van armed with a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol. At 2:02am, he bypassed an off-duty Orlando police officer called Adam Gruler who tried to engage and stop him. He went into the building and began shooting patrons. Dozens were killed in the 2 minutes between 2:02am and 2:04am when Gruler, after calling for assistance, received additional aid from officers arriving at the club. The shooter retreated farther into the nightclub and kept on killing. At first, some patrons thought the gunshots were firecrackers or part of the music. Some of the survivors described afterwards a scene of panic and confusion caused by the loud music and darkness of the nightclub scene. Most people took refuge in bathrooms, waiting for death. One of them shielded herself with bodies. Some escaped by crawling out the patio exit near the bar. A bartender took cover beneath the glass bar. A recently discharged marine veteran working one of the nightclub bouncer immediately recognized the sounds of gunfire, jumped over a locked door behind which dozens of people were already hidden and paralyzed by fear. He then opened a latched door behind them, allowing approximately 70 people to escape. As the gunman started shooting in the main room, police officers entered the facility and a shootout was engaged. The police reported that many people escaped or were rescued during this early exchange of gunfire, as a few police officers were running in and out of the building pulling out victims. According to a man trapped inside a bathroom with fifteen other people, the shooter shot multiple times into the closed bathroom door, killing at least two and wounding several others. One of the people trapped in the bathroom with the shooter afterwards said that he burst into the bathroom, went to the stall next to the one he and a friend were hiding in and shot the people inside.
After the shootout, the gunman retreated to the women’s bathroom where he held hostages. Meanwhile, some of the people trapped sought to send text messages to friends and relatives, either to inform of the situation or to say good-bye.
Rescues of people trapped inside the nightclub commenced and continued throughout the hostage crisis. Because so many people were lying on the dance floor, one rescuing officer asked “if you’re alive, raise your hand”. People were pretending to be dead with bodies surrounding them in order to not get killed themselves. One of the survivors later said he felt something poking him while on the floor. He thinks it could have been the shooter checking to see if he was dead. By the beginning of the phone calls from the shooter to multiple sources, nearly all of the injured patrons from the club had been extracted from the building, except for those held hostages in the bathroom and a few in dressing rooms.
No shots were heard between the exchanging gunfire with the first responders and three hours later.
At 2:35 am while in the bathroom, the gunman placed a 911 call in which he pledged his allegiance to the Extremist Islamic State. At 2:48am, he talked to a crisis negotiation team for 9 minutes. He ordered the end of the bombing in Syria and Iraq and claimed to have explosives on him. During this time, more people escaped. Four people hidden in a dressing room took the exist from the north side of the building while the police helped eight people escape through an air-conditioner vent. At 4:29am, some survivors who escaped informed of the gunman’s plan to put explosive devices on four hostages in each corner of the club. An information that turned that to be a lie on the past of the gunman as no vests or devices were found afterwards. It prompted officials to mount a rescue operation. At 5:02am, the police blew a hole in the outer wall of the restroom, but missed the mark and ended up with a partially destructed wall in the hallway between the two bathroom. On that occasion, the rest of the survivors escaped through the hole. At 5:14 am, the gunman entered the hallway and engaged in a shootout with the police. At 5:15am, officers reported that the gunman was down. He was shot eight times and killed in a face out that involved 11 officers who fired a total of about 150 bullets. More than three hours after the first attack.
49 innocent people died that night. 53 were wounded during the attack, some critically. 38 were pronounced dead at the scene, and 11 more at local hospitals. Of the 38 victims to die at Pulse, 20 died on the stage area and dance floor, 9 in the nightclub’s northern bathroom, 4 in the southern bathroom, three on the stage, one at the front lobby and one out on a patio. At least 5 of those were killed during the hostage situation in the bathroom. As for the wounded, a least 76 surgeries were performed on the patients, with some discharged as far as September 6, nearly 3 months after the shooting occurred.
The attack became the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in United States History, bested a little over a year later by the Last Vegas shooting of 2017. It is still the deadliest attack on LGBT people in History in the U.S, surpassing the 1973 UpStairs Lounge Arson Attack (see the June 10th article Chapter Ten : Queer Community vs Violence).

Criticism was expressed over the decision the delay the breaching of the nightclub through the bathroom wall by over 3 hours, citing the lesson learned form other mass shooting that officers can minimize casualties only by entering a shooting location expeditiously, even if it means putting themselves at great risk. To that, the Police Department answered that the situation had changed from an active shooter in the club to an hostage situation and could not be handled the same way. Immediately after the shooting took take, many people went to donate blood at locate blood donation centers and bloodmobile. Although ironically, a controversial federal policy in the United States forbids men who had sex with men from donating blood, urging straight people to go instead. A victim’s assistance center was opened on June 15 to provide help to what turned out to be almost a thousand people. Furthermore, the two main hospitals that treated the victims, Orlando Regional Medical Center and Florida Hospital, announced that they will not be billing the survivors or pursuing reimbursement. Multiple fundraisers raised close to 32 million dollars to help victims and families in the months that followed.
The Pulse never opened its doors again. There were plans to sell the property to the City of Orlando and turn it into a memorial for the victims and survivors, though the city backed out after the price tag of 2,25 million dollars was asked. The owner then created the OnePulse Foundation and plans for a memorial site and museum are on the way, with an opening slated for 2020.
Without going into any specifics about the gunman’s personal life and motivations, it is imperative to point out that before his attack on Pulse, he was interrogated three times by the FBI due to relations with terrorist-affiliated individuals and organizations. He was twice under investigation (but no convincing evidence were found). He was on a no-fly list, meaning he wasn’t allowed on any airplanes. Nevertheless, the shooter was able to go into a gun store and LEGALLY buy a semi-automatic weapon. He went through a three-day background check and still went through the cracks. Then Las Vegas happened and they did nothing. Then Parkland happened and they did nothing.
As of June 11th, 2019, there’s been 149 mass shootings in the United States since January 1. For fuck’s sake! There’s been a mass shooting TODAY (Aurora, Colorado) with 4 people injured.
People were quick to point out that this was a terrorist attack trying to destroy the American way of life. Sure, it was. But let’s remember that first and foremost, this was a hate crime. This was an attack perpetuated on a minority group, on the basis of exterminated them, a few rounds of bullets at a time.
On a personal note, it broke my heart when I heard what happened in Orlando three years ago. I saw the news coverage and I broke down. One of the victims had the same name as me. I was a 25 year-old french boy living in Paris and I felt like I was about to die with the rest of my community. When you kill one of us because of who we are, we all bleed. Those 49 deaths, 53 wounded victims and almost 200 survivors were our brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers and friends. And I’m not just talking about the LGBTQI+ community. There were the brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers to US ALL.
Where are we, three years later ? Is that just another massacre ready to resurface each date of the tragedy’s anniversary and then forgotten for another year ? I’m no one. I can’t influence anything on anyone. BUT they’ve been living in me for the past three years, one way or another. The faces have been on my wall for three years. The names have been on my wall for the past three years. Their memories have not been forgotten by me for the past three years. The Time magazine cover asked the question : WHY DID THEY DIE ? They shouldn’t but they are. Let’s celebrate them by protecting each other more.

MLB Power Rankings: Who's Already Surprising Us?
What's gotten into the Rockies? Has David Ross already revived the Cubs? The ... Marlins?
The 2020 MLB campaign is only two weeks old, and unfortunately that has already been ample time to become skeptical of the season’s viability. COVID-19 outbreaks have caused the league to quarantine entire teams and make drastic alterations to an already wonky schedule, while the commissioner
lays blame on the players and deflects accountability.
With so much opportunity for dismay, we're using Week 3 of Power Rankings to highlight one pleasant surprise from each club. Because what are the early days of a baseball season for if not a little positivity?
30. Pittsburgh Pirates (Last Week: 29)
It wasn’t enough to prevent falling into the basement of our rankings, but the Pirates secured a walk-off win on Thursday against the Twins, who entered with MLB’s best record. Kevin Newman had the game-winning single after racking up four walk-off hits last year as a rookie.
29. Kansas City Royals (Last Week: 26)
At long last, Trevor Rosenthal appears to have rediscovered his form (and, more importantly, his health). He missed all of 2018 recovering from Tommy John surgery, then posted a 13.50 ERA with 26 walks in 15 1/3 innings for the Nationals and Tigers last season. So far in 2020, he has a 1.93 ERA with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings, and has yet to walk a batter. His fastball is as firm as ever, averaging 98 mph.
28. Seattle Mariners (Last Week: 28)
The emergence of J.P. Crawford’s bat has to be music to the ears of Mariners fans. Crawford, a former top prospect whose defense has always been strong, hit .222/.320/.367 in 165 games before this season. He’s batting .280/.410/.380 through 14 games, and has cut down his strikeout rate from 21% in 2019 to just 11.5% in 2020.
27. Detroit Tigers (Last Week: 24)
Tyler Alexander’s record-setting 10-strikeout performance in relief on Sunday is among the most surprising feats of the young season. Alexander has never had overpowering stuff, with a fastball sitting around 90 mph. He’s faced 26 batters on the season and struck out half of them, providing support for a Tigers bullpen that ranks 18th in the Majors with a 4.30 ERA.
26. Baltimore Orioles (Last Week: 30)
Does moving out of the cellar of SI’s power rankings qualify as a pleasant surprise? Last weekend’s sweep of the Rays certainly counts, as does Hanser Alberto’s hot start. The 27-year-old still rarely walks (1.9% walk rate in 53 plate appearances), but he’s improved his plate discipline, swinging less often at pitches out of the zone and more often at strikes than he did a season ago.
25. Texas Rangers (Last Week: 23)
It’s been a tough start to the season collectively for Rangers hitters, who are batting a combined .208/.290/.362 through 11 games. One positive note has been 34-year-old Todd Frazier, who’s hitting .289/.372/.553 after signing with Texas on a one-year, $5 million deal this offseason.
24. Boston Red Sox (Last Week: 21)
The Red Sox have had the worst starting rotation in the American League, so finding a bright spot requires a bit of squinting. Left-hander Martin Perez has been just that through his first three starts, going 2-1 with a 3.45 ERA and no home runs allowed while inducing weak contact—his average exit velocity is 82.5 mph, among the lowest in baseball.
23. Arizona Diamondbacks (Last Week: 22)
While Madison Bumgarner and Robbie Ray have both taken a nosedive this season and brought along Arizona’s playoff odds with them, rotation mates Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen have tried to pick up the slack by recording ERAs under 3.00 in five combined starts so far.
22. San Francisco Giants (Last Week: 27)
Mike Yastrzemski has been doing his best impression of Mike Trout at the plate, slashing .304/.458/.630 to lead the Majors in fWAR (1.1) entering Thursday. Like Trout, he’s also playing center field, but in spacious Oracle Park after manning the corners last season, increasing his value for the Giants even more.
21. Miami Marlins (Last Week: 25)
The Marlins are somehow leading the NL East despite playing with a skeleton crew after over half their team tested positive for COVID-19. Their ragtag group of green youngsters and journeymen swept a four-game set from the surprisingly frisky Orioles to help Don Mattingly, who admitted he didn’t know some of his newly signed players, become the franchise’s all-time winningest manager.

20. Los Angeles Angels (Last Week: 20)
The Angels traded four minor leaguers for Dylan Bundy this offseason to help improve a starting rotation that ranked last in combined fWAR last season, and the early results have been spectacular. Bundy tossed his third career complete game on Thursday, and is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in three starts with 25 strikeouts and just two walks in 21 2/3 innings.
19. Toronto Blue Jays (Last Week: 18)
This young Toronto lineup has yet to find its rhythm, but 27-year-old Teoscar Hernandez has been a steady force. Six of Hernandez’s 11 hits have gone for extra bases (four homers and two doubles).
18. New York Mets (Last Week: 13)
Robbie Cano is slapping singles like it’s going out of style—which, it sort of is. He's batting .412 on the back of 11 singles in 39 plate appearances, the highest single rate (which sounds like an unfortunate romantic stat) among players with at least seven singles entering Thursday’s games.
• Verducci: What Happened to MLB's Elite First Basemen?
17. Milwaukee Brewers (Last Week: 16)
The Brewers are yet another team whose schedule has been interrupted by COVID-19. None of Milwaukee’s hitters have really found a groove yet, but Adrian Houser’s seven innings of shutout ball against the White Sox on Wednesday lowered his ERA to 0.75, vaulting him to third on the MLB leaderboard.
16. Philadelphia Phillies (Last Week: 17)
The Phillies have played just seven games in 14 days, or as many as they’ll play in a five-day span against Miami in September. The most pleasant surprise of their season so far is that no players were infected with the coronavirus when they played the COVID-stricken Marlins on opening weekend.
15. Cincinnati Reds (Last Week: 12)
Nick Castellanos had a tale of two seasons while split between the Tigers and Cubs last year. Reds fans are happy he’s carrying over what he showed in Chicago, ranking among the top five league-wide in home runs (six), RBI (13) and OPS (1.212) and carrying a 12-game hitting streak to begin the season until it was snapped Thursday.
14. St. Louis Cardinals (Last Week: 14)
The Cardinals have just five games under their belt and haven’t taken the field since last Wednesday, so it’s hard to draw any conclusions here. Longtime heralded prospect Tyler O’Neill has two home runs in 15 at-bats, so that’s … something.
13. San Diego Padres (Last Week: 11)
A renewed emphasis on plate discipline has translated to the best Padres offense since the steroid era, as San Diego leads the NL with 5.5 runs per game. Just as it seemed like Wil Myers had worn out his chances to start in San Diego, he’s finally hit his stride in his sixth season in SoCal and leads the Padres in OPS (1.109).
12. Chicago White Sox (Last Week: 19)
White Sox starting pitchers have scuffled so far with a collective 5.46 ERA. The bullpen, though, has been stellar. Alex Colome, Evan Marshall, Ross Detwiler and Matt Foster have pitched a combined 23 1/3 innings of relief without allowing a run.
11. Tampa Bay Rays (Last Week: 4)
Dropping from fourth to 11th may seem harsh, but that’s where getting swept by the Orioles will get you. The Rays have dropped six of their last seven, but a silver lining has been the improvements made by second baseman Brandon Lowe. Lowe was an All-Star last year and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting, and now he’s improved his slash line to .302/.375/.605. He’s particularly doing damage on fastballs, hitting .389 against heaters in 2020 after batting .291 on fastballs last year.
10. Cleveland Indians (Last Week: 6)
One of the few consistent contributors in Cleveland's lineup has been Cesar Hernandez, who’s batting .319/.429/.383 after two years of below-average performance in Philadelphia. The bullpen must be mentioned here as well—Cleveland relievers have a combined 1.34 ERA with no home runs allowed in 33 2/3 innings.
9. Washington Nationals (Last Week: 7)
Washington’s bullpen has the third-best ERA (1.53) in the Majors among teams who haven’t had COVID-related postponements after the unit recorded an NL-worst 5.68 ERA in 2019.
MLB Blog: Nationals's Early-Season Woes Strike Again in 2020
8. Colorado Rockies (Last Week: 15)
Colorado’s core four starters (Kyle Freeland, German Marquez, Jon Gray, Antonio Senzatela) have combined for a 2.49 ERA in 11 starts, providing a nice collective rebound after all except Gray struggled to repeat their 2018 form last season. All three of Colorado’s losses have been by one run. Rocktober will likely be upon us soon enough.
7. Atlanta Braves (Last Week: 8)
Mike Soroka may be out for the season, but Max Fried looks ready to assume the ace role in Atlanta after allowing a total of four runs in three starts against the Mets, Rays and Blue Jays.
6. Houston Astros (Last Week: 5)
The Astros’ rotation would be in dire straits were it not for two youngsters: Cristian Javier and Framber Valdez. The pair has combined for a 1.93 ERA in 23 1/3 innings pitched, with 21 strikeouts and just one home run allowed. With Justin Verlander injured and Lance McCullers still struggling, Javier and Valdez will be relied upon to keep Houston in contention.
5. Oakland Athletics (Last Week: 10)
The A’s have risen to the top of the AL West thanks to their sensational pitching. Oakland pitchers ranked eighth in the Majors last year in total WAR, but rank second through 13 games so far. That jump is thanks to the team’s bullpen, which sports a 1.80 ERA in 55 innings.
4. Chicago Cubs (Last Week: 9)
Before the Cubbies were inexplicably whipped by the Royals on Thursday to snap a six-game winning streak, their rotation held a MLB-best 1.95 ERA. Every starter has carried his weight, from steady veterans Kyle Hendricks and Jon Lester to the resurgent pair of Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood (Thursday’s debacle aside) and even the soft-contact dependent Alec Mills.
3. Minnesota Twins (Last Week: 3)
Everyone expected the Twins’ lineup to rake this year, but few likely expected Minnesota’s rotation to pitch this well. Twins starters had a 4.19 ERA last season, ranking 11th in the majors. The group’s 2.71 ERA through 13 games ranks third-best in 2020—led by ground-ball machine Randy Dobnak, who’s posted a 0.60 ERA through three starts.
2. New York Yankees (Last Week: 2)
Yankees fans who watched him thrive last year might not consider this a surprise, but Gio Urshela has picked up where he left off last season and taken his game to an even higher level. Urshela is batting .324/.405/.649 through the team’s first 12 games, posting a ludicrous 57.7% hard-hit rate. Any doubts about the legitimacy of Urshela’s breakout 2019 campaign are quickly being put to bed.
BACCELLIERI: What's the Craziest Feat We Could See in 60 Games?
1. Los Angeles Dodgers (Last Week: 1)
Accidental Opening Day starter Dustin May has upped his velocity another notch this season and throws the fastest sinker in the league (97.8 mph), per Fangraphs. He also made Manny Machado look like a Little Leaguer with one of the nastiest pitches of the season on Tuesday, when he picked up his first win of the season while pitching a career-high six innings.

On June 12,2016, 49 persons are killed into Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando and 53 others are injured. Three years after, we all need to remember the names of those who were killed.
Omar Mateen swears allegiance to ISIS before entering into the nightclub at 2am during the last call drinks time. Approximately 320 people were in the bar at that time. He is armed with automatic weapons, passed the security guard and shoots patrons. Before the guard calls for additional officers, Omar Mateen has entered into Pulse and takes hostages. During the shootings, texts are exchanged from the inside to the outside by several hostages. A Marine veteran in the Pulse recognizes the gunshots and opens a door through which 70 persons escape. The nightclub is dived into darkness and loud music and people inside are confused. Some are hidden in lockers and others are locked in bathrooms. But many lay down on the floor. Hostages say that the shooter enters in the bathroom and shots several times. He declared to them that he has a sniper waiting outside and explosives. Omar Mateen made several references to ISIS and several terrorists, saying that he was doing it in order to stop the bombing in Syria and Iraq by America. Many 911 calls are made by the hostages and Omar Mateen. At 2.09am, the nightclub posts on its Facebook page “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.”. Later in the night, six officers enter into Pulse by a large window but they are told to hold their position to not hurt the hostages. They begin to rescue people trapped inside the Pulse. Officers shout “if you’re alive, raise your hand”. By 2.35am, most of the patrons were out of the Pulse except the hostages and the one hiding. A crisis negotiator arrives and the negotiations begin. At 4.21am, eight of the hostages escape thanks to the police. At 4.29am, Omar Mateen says to the negotiator that he will strap explosives to 4 hostages and that he will blow them up 15 minutes later. At that point, the police decide to stop the negotiations and prepares to enter into the building. At 5:17, Omar Mateen is shot dead by the police. During the trial of the wife’s shooter, it is said that the place was decided by the shooter at the last minutes.
38 people were shot dead by Mateen and 53 were injured, 11 persons died later at the hospital. The injured are dispatched between the Orlando Regional Medical Center and the Florida Hospital Orlando. This attack is the second deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest against the LGBTQ+ community.

MLB roundup: Braves’ Acuna plunked, hurt in testy win
Red-hot rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. departed early due to injury after getting drilled by an opening pitch, but the Atlanta Braves still finished a four-game sweep over the visiting Miami Marlins with a 5-2 win Wednesday.

Acuna, who had led off the previous three games with home runs and had gone deep in five straight, was hit by a 97 mph fastball on the first pitch of the contest, setting off a benches-clearing incident that led to the ejection of Miami starter Jose Urena and Atlanta manager Brian Snitker.
Acuna ran the bases and took his position in the outfield in the second inning, but he was subsequently removed. After the game, Snitker said Acuna exited due to cramps in his arm but that the team would know more about the 20-year-old’s condition Thursday.
After falling behind 2-0, the Braves came back to win their fifth straight game. Atlanta (68-51) is a season-best 17 games over .500 and two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in first place in the National League East.
Phillies 7, Red Sox 4
Wilson Ramos had three extra-base hits in his Phillies debut, helping Philadelphia end visiting Boston’s five-game winning streak.
Ramos had two doubles, a triple, three runs and three RBIs as the Phillies split the two-game series. The 31-year-old catcher, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31 despite nursing a hamstring injury, was activated off the 10-day disabled list before the game. He had been out since July 15.
Nick Williams and Justin Bour each added two hits for the Phillies. Brock Holt had a pair of hits for the Red Sox.
Cardinals 4, Nationals 2
Austin Gomber pitched six shutout innings, and St. Louis extended its season-best winning streak to eight games in beating visiting Washington.
Matt Carpenter, who extended his streak of reaching base in 33 straight games, was hit on his right hand in the seventh inning by a Matt Grace pitch and departed early. The Cardinals later announced that X-rays were negative and that Carpenter was removed for precautionary reasons.
St. Louis improved to 19-9 since interim manager Mike Shildt replaced the fired Mike Matheny. Washington has dropped four straight games and seven of its past nine.
Astros 12, Rockies 1
Gerrit Cole posted his seventh double-digit strikeout start of the season, and Houston bashed five home runs in snapping its nine-game home losing skid with an interleague victory over Colorado.
The Astros salvaged the finale of their six-game homestand with an offensive eruption, producing their highest scoring output at home since a 12-6 win over the Chicago White Sox on July 7. Houston had dropped five games in a row.
Evan Gattis and Tyler White blasted two home runs apiece, and Yuri Gurriel also went deep for the Astros. With his 12 strikeouts on the mound, Cole (11-5) recorded the Astros’ 25th double-digit strikeout game of the season, a franchise record that ranks tied for second all-time in American League history.
Dodgers 4, Giants 3
Brian Dozier hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as Los Angeles beat visiting San Francisco to end a five-game losing streak.

Yasmani Grandal doubled to open the 12th inning against Giants reliever Casey Kelly (0-1). Grandal took third on Max Muncy’s single and scored on Dozier’s second career game-ending RBI.
The Dodgers’ recent bullpen issues surfaced once again in the late innings as Andrew McCutchen crushed a game-tying, three-run home run to center field in the eighth inning off Caleb Ferguson.
Mets 16, Orioles 5
Kevin Plawecki hit a grand slam, Todd Frazier homered and drove in four runs, and Brandon Nimmo went 5-for-5 with three RBIs as visiting New York crushed Baltimore.
The Mets scored early but broke the game open with a nine-run sixth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Plawecki’s grand slam, off rookie right-hander Evan Phillips, was the inning’s big blow. The Mets’ nine-run inning included four walks, a hit batter, two doubles, a triple and Plawecki’s slam.
The sixth-inning explosion let New York manager Mickey Callaway pull starter Zack Wheeler after five innings. Wheeler (8-6), who has won six consecutive starts, allowed one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Rays 6, Yankees 1
Mallex Smith hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and fell a triple shy of the cycle as Tampa Bay beat host New York.
Smith helped the Rays even the three-game series at one win apiece when he lifted a first-pitch breaking ball from Luis Cessa (1-3) into the right field seats. Smith’s homer made it 5-1, and the Rays cruised to their seventh win in their past nine meetings against the Yankees.
Brandon Lowe drove in the first two runs of his career with run-scoring singles in the second and fifth innings. Kevin Kiermaier added an RBI single in the third for the Rays.
Twins 6, Pirates 4
Bobby Wilson homered and hit an RBI single, and Logan Forsythe drove in three runs with two singles to lead Minnesota past visiting Pittsburgh for a sweep of a two-game series.
Jose Berrios, in his first career start against the Pirates, allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Gabriel Moya (3-0), the third of six Minnesota pitchers, tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for the win, and Trevor Hildenberger pitched the ninth for his third save.
Elias Diaz homered, and Gregory Polanco had a two-run single for Pittsburgh, which ended its road trip 4-5 after losing the last three games. Chris Archer, making his third start for Pittsburgh, allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
Indians 4, Reds 3
Melky Cabrera smacked a two-run homer, and Cleveland took advantage of a strong bullpen effort to beat host Cincinnati in sweeping the three-game interleague series.
The Indians won their fifth straight thanks to a bullpen that rescued starter Shane Bieber, who made it through only 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Cleveland’s bullpen took over, with five relievers combining to give up just three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Reds lost their fourth straight after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give starter Robert Stephenson a 3-0 lead. Cincinnati was held scoreless with six hits in the game’s final eight innings.
Blue Jays 6, Royals 5
Slideshow (11 Images)
Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam in a five-run fourth inning, Kevin Pillar had a pair of RBI singles, and visiting Toronto held on to defeat Kansas City.
Marco Estrada (6-9) allowed four runs, six hits and one walk while striking out three in 6 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays, who have won two in a row after dropping the opener of the four-game series.
Salvador Perez had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in three runs for the Royals, and Ryan O’Hearn added a pinch-hit homer. Jorge Lopez (0-2), making his first start for the Royals after being obtained in a trade with Milwaukee, allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Angels 3, Padres 2
Rene Rivera homered with one out in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and give visiting Los Angeles a victory over San Diego and a sweep of the three-game series.
Rivera, who was the Padres’ team Most Valuable Player in 2014, pulled the first pitch he saw from San Diego closer Kirby Yates 407 feet into the left field stands to snap a 2-2 tie for the Angels, who have won seven of their past nine.
Cory Spangenberg hit his seventh homer for the Padres, who have dropped four of their last five immediately after winning four of five.
Cubs 8, Brewers 4
Anthony Rizzo homered, stole two bases and drove in three runs, and Jason Heyward had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in two runs to lead Chicago to a win over visiting Milwaukee.
Albert Almora Jr. also homered for Chicago, which increased its lead over the Brewers to three games in the NL Central with the victory. David Bote had two hits and scored two runs while Javier Baez tripled and had two hits and also scored a run.
Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun left the game in the fifth inning with what the club announced as right ribcage tightness. Braun, who hit two homers in Milwaukee’s 7-0 win over the Cubs on Tuesday, apparently was hurt attempting to make a sliding catch on Heyward’s RBI double in the third inning.
Mariners 2, A’s 0 (12 innings)
Dee Gordon ended a scoreless deadlock with a two-run home run in the 12th inning, giving Seattle a victory over host Oakland to prevent a three-game sweep.
Seattle’s Mike Leake dueled Oakland’s Brett Anderson in a 0-0 game for eight innings, and Edwin Diaz finished it with his 47th save of the season, allowing the Mariners to pull within 2 1/2 games of the A’s in the American League wild-card race.
Mike Zunino drew a one-out walk from Oakland’s Yusmeiro Petit (5-3) in the 12th before Gordon hit the next pitch for just his second home run of the season. Nick Martini collected three hits while Matt Olson chipped in with a double and a single for the A’s, who had won four in a row.
White Sox 6, Tigers 5
Matt Davidson and Jose Abreu hit two-run homers to back another solid outing by Carlos Rodon as Chicago held off host Detroit.
Davidson had three hits and scored twice while Abreu delivered three hits and knocked in three runs. Yolmer Sanchez added three hits, a run and an RBI for the White Sox, who took the last two games of the three-game series after losing nine of their first 10 matchups with their division rival this season.
Rodon (4-3) hadn’t given up more than two earned runs in his previous six starts. He was touched for a three-run third but was otherwise stingy once again. He went eight innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six.
