The Flower Girl - Short Film
Had to repost because there was something wrong with the last upload. Anyway, here goes. Finally, I have finished my little side project. I feel both satisfied and braced for embarrassment, but that will pass. It was very fulfilling to create and I hope you all like it as much as I liked making it!
------------------------
Description:
Inspired by a novel I stumbled across in a library a decade ago - The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen.
Little did I know that the series would dig itself (pun absolutely intended) into my heart so permanently. I’m sure everyone who read the books wanted to be Imogen, or Jaron, or any other of the brilliant characters. Likewise, being Imogen was a childhood dream of mine. So, I decided that with the tools I had on hand, and the years of imagination behind me, that I’d make something that 10 year old Valerie would drool over. I learned a lot while making this, namely that I’m only made for acting and not cinematography or editing. But it also revitalised the waning performer within me. I hope it may do the same for others.

What if #7
Conner never pick up Sage/Jaron from the streets? What if he chose a random other boy and Tobias or Roden got picked? How would Sage/Jaron become the king then? Would he not want to become the King and live the rest of his life on the streets, or would he attempted to go to the castle and show he's the real prince?

Ascendence Series + Short Stories
Tumblr media
I decided to put together a chronological complete list of all the books of the Ascendence Series with all the short stories I could find that Jennifer Nielsen wrote as extras/background stories or to fill in the gaps! I tried to find links for all of them, if a link doesn’t work, let me know!
All Stories + Novels In Chronological Order—
Just a disclaimer! Don’t read the first 4 stories before you read The False Prince! They contain spoilers for the first book but are meant to take place before the events of The False Prince, which is why I’ve ordered them thus!
The Duel (Link to YouTube and also included at the end of The False Prince audiobook—)
The Missing Prince
Sage’s Gift
The Roast
THE FALSE PRINCE
Roden’s Revenge
Redemption
THE RUNAWAY KING
THE SHADOW THRONE
Confession (Between Chapters 13 & 14 of The Shadow Throne)
Patriot’s Treason (Between Chapters 28 & 29 of The Shadow Throne on the audiobook (YT link))
THE CAPTIVE KINGDOM
Revenge (Wilta Short Story following the events of The Captive Kingdom (on TCK audiobook only))
Saint’s Day
THE SHATTERED CASTLE
Storm (Epilogue Short Story on audiobook only (set 10-15 years later) starts at 9:42:15 on this link)
Tumblr media
And that’s all she wrote (for this series (so far! lol))

can I say something . im going to say something . anaxa lovesss watching you . so obsessed w ur reactions to various things . even your simple everyday things mannerisms are so fascinating to him ♡ however ! make no mistake ! this is merely an alchemical research endeavour of he , anaxagoras , the infamous nousporist sage ! ( •̀_•́ ) [ . . is what he tells himself , at least ] no , it is not “creepy,” as some may say ! [ cerces doesn’t bother to hide their laughter ]
he’s not lying entirely — his near constant observance of you did originally stem from curiosity . anaxa can only recall a handful of individuals that have been granted the luxury of holding some sort of significance to him . few things truly startle anaxagoras . your ability to effortlessly claim the highest priority in his mind [ before even speaking to him ! how bold . . preposterous , even ! anaxa does not believe in gods , but if he did , you most certainly must have been blessed by one ] is one of those things. he doesn’t recall the exact moment this curiosity shifted to something of infatuation , but even he does not refute cerces’ playful accusations of love (..◜ᴗ◝..)
his tendency to watch you closely doesn’t diminish once you become lovers . if anything , it seems to have increased . [ he’s truly lucky you like him . while you are no stranger to his lack of social skills or peculiar demeanour , you did not expect such intensity ] I don’t wanna freak you out , but he doesn’t close his eyes when you kiss . uhhh just try to ignore the staring you sense because he has no shame , really . should you catch him doing this , he doesn’t seem phased . (ᵕ—ᴗ—)
you can ask him about it , if you want , but his answer never feels fufilling . he has an excuse explanation for everything he does . a scholar such as himself never acts without purpose . [ cerces laughs at this ] what do you take him for ? a simpleton ? hah ! absurd ! it’s kind of impressive , actually , how he never repeats an explanation more than once . [ how is he coming up with all of this ? and on the spot , at that ! . . . well , anyone that dares to underestimate anaxagoras is at fault , to be honest ]
why is he looking at you so intensely ? he chuckles . oh ? is he not allowed to gaze upon his lover ? you wound him . why did he put you in that situation ? pardon ? don’t be foolish , darling . do you truly think he would set you up ? [ he would ♡ ] why did he dadadadada ? ahem . you misunderstand . if you must know , this relates to his most recent thesis . allow him to explain [ not only is he a yapper , he will include the most convoluted alchemical jaron during his monologues . it actually isn’t that intentional . he’s just like that lol ]
that isn’t to say you can’t fluster him ! he denies the teasing comments of his students [ hyacine takes joy in mentioning you often ] regarding your power over him — clearing his throat to scold them while looking away with a blush . he isn’t ashamed at his staring , but should you be the one caught observing him , he can’t help flush on his face ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝) [ try as he might to hide it . it’s cute how he crosses his arms and tries to subtly cover the bottom half of his face with a fist ] clears his throat and makes a snarky comment , hoping you didn’t take notice of the way he stumbled on his words for a moment

Ascendance Trilogy Review
Here is my review of the Ascendance series : I just love Jaron! He is my book crush in the Ascendance series. I also adore Mott, Roden, and Tobias. I liked Mott because of the conversation he had in Book 1, how he could see Sage was acting tough but wasn’t truly tough. Mott was the only one in Book 1 who realized Sage was the prince. His loyalty later on in the books and how, during the war in Book 3, he made Jaron regain his strength (I love his speech to Jaron) was remarkable. He was Jaron’s friend but also felt like a guardian figure. I really didn’t want him dead in Book 3 and felt Jaron’s pain when he thought Mott might die. Roden and Tobias weren’t my favorites initially, but I ended up liking Tobias by the end of Book 1 and later on. As for Roden, I don’t approve of what he did by trying to kill Jaron or break his leg, but I love what their dynamic became later on—the development was too good. I like how Jaron said a few philosophical things to Roden in Book 2 during the fight and also in Book 3 to boost his confidence. Roden’s actions were confusing in Book 4, but in reality, he never truly abandoned Jaron even then. I hoped Roden and other characters had gotten more spotlight in Book 5 (I needed to see my favorite trio). Amarinda is the kind of princess I usually like—royalty who doesn’t enjoy royal life. She had a sense of duty and turned out to be amazing in Book 3. I liked her story about wanting to make her own choices. She’s kind of fun, too (I find it funny when she said she hated wearing gowns in Book 2 and when she joked with Fink in Book 3 at the beginning). I don’t mind her and Tobias ending up together, though it was a bit weird since we got no scenes between them in the books. Still, as a side couple, it works. However, I wish Tobias hadn’t told Amarinda in Book 3, when they were playing in the mud, the same thing Sage had told her in Book 1 during their first meeting (about dirt on her cheek). It didn’t give me a distinct feel for their romance since they didn’t have many on-page scenes.Harlowe is great. I always liked how he never got upset with Jaron, especially how he gave Jaron that hug when Jaron shouted at him at the beginning. Jaron really needed such hugs a lot, but I think whenever Jaron shouts in the books out of anger or fear, people just misunderstand him or get angry with him. Kerwyn was so good, but I don’t approve of the author killing him off-page in Book 5. Was losing someone who was like a parent necessary? Jaron already lost his parents; he didn’t need to lose more. (He will remain alive in my headcanons.) Fink turned out to be one of my favorite characters. He’s cute. I love his dynamic with Jaron, and in Book 4, how Fink is the only one who isn’t angry with Jaron no matter what.I think Books 4 and 5 had a different vibe, and many times things seemed repetitive, like Jaron getting imprisoned in every book or being physically tortured. I love the plot twists in the series, especially the Book 1 twist, but I felt some plot twists in the later books were unnecessary. I liked the plot twist of Darius being alive in Book 4, but I didn’t like the twist of him being adopted and also being Conner’s son. I still don’t like Conner despite what he did in Book 3. I usually don’t like villains no matter what, and Conner killed Jaron’s parents—how can I forgive him? He’s not interesting or complex like Soo-won from *Yona of the Dawn*. Conner killed an innocent orphan kid just to prove how high the stakes were in Book 1; I cannot like him. I also didn’t like what the author did with Darius’ character in Book 4 because I thought Darius missed Jaron and didn’t imagine him to be like that. I didn’t think Darius really wanted to be king; I thought he did that because he wanted Jaron to enjoy freedom (something like that was mentioned in Book 1). Wasn’t it a bit stupid of him to believe Jaron could do that to his parents? Anyway, he later turned out to be the way I always thought of him by the end of Book 4 and in Book 5.

The Ascendance series next generation fanfic
(Unfinished first chapter)
I found this in my old Google docs of a next generation story for the Ascendance series by Jennifer Neilson that I completely forgot about
Content warnings: none
Characters listed within the document, Lilly and Titus being the only ones whom aren’t related to Jaron.
Character sheet:
Darius II: jaron’s eldest, deaf, likes music and plays a crap ton of instruments. Darkish blond hair, tall, olive eyes. Age 19
Lillian/lilly harlowe: eldest and only child of Roden and only daughter. Long blonde hair, beautiful, green eyes. age 18
Eric: red curly hair, brown eyes, pirate estheticTM, chaos gremlin. Age 17
Erianna: sewing master, shipperTM, instigator, totally not the fav child. Brown hair and eyes. Age 15
Sage:Jaron mini, if there is a god, sage killed him. FIRE! Age 10
Mott: he handled the god murder trial. Mott mini in personality and somehow inherited his face. Age 10
Titus: no nonsense, was mott’s co-lawyer in the god trial. Somehow the villain but also the designated lawyer. Looks like Amarandia and Tobias smooshed together. Auburn hair and green eyes. Age 16.
Chapter 1
I was sitting within my room, fiddle held between shoulder and cheek. I held the bow up to the strings and as I began to play the first chord, a heavy shake took over the castle.
From my balcony I saw servants running across the cobbles. I couldn't hear anything, granted, I couldn't hear much of anything. I saw the guards within the wall walkways, running across trying to identify a threat. Even the dark cloak of general Roden, my Godfather, striding down the steps towards my father’s offices.
His luck at finding my father would be faulty, as he was currently striding across the hall and past my door, shouting.
“BOYS!” the king yelled. At least, that's what I understood. Lip reading was quite difficult when the person was practically running past.
I put my fiddle back within its case, and placed it beside my piano. Walking toward my door and leaning against its frame, I awaited the chaos that was promised. Few minutes passed, and I saw two small figures running in my direction.
Wonderful, I thought, time for our daily amusement.
The two figures were, in fact, my baby brothers. Sage, named after my father, and the guaranteed instigator of the very recent quake. And, Mott. his partner in crime and personal lawyer.
They were the trouble makers of the family. And my personal birth control. Constantly in trouble with both the guards and our father. Somehow they always had an infinite stash of blackpowder, and an attachment to explosions.
Our father had spent months trying to find their stashes and sellers, but unfortunately, unlike him, they were intelligent. Mott constantly changed sellers, and burned any record of their purchases. He had worked his way through the guards, and had set an intel line for when father caught wind of recent hijinks. very impressive for a ten-year-old.
End of document
Might pick this up again because I still think and write about these guys I just haven’t made anything coherent

My Thoughts On Imogen
I tried to like Imogen, but after the middle of The Runaway King (Book 2), I just can’t stand her, and the romance with Jaron feels so forced. I loved her bravery going to the pirates’ camp, but then she gets captured in the end of book 2 like some damsel-in-distress, and that “we are not friends” line felt like a cheap setup for love. In The Shadow Throne (Book 3),suddenly all his friends are asking him if he love Imogen and also Jaron’s lovesick while rescuing her (wanting to kiss her during war?!) is out of character for him as Sage/Jaron. They’ve barely spent time together—maybe a month total across Books 1-2, with months apart before Book 3. How does Vargan even know she’s important to Jaron? I can even summarize the timeline:
Book 1: 2 weeks, Imogen in Farthenwood playing mute and just helping jaron at times with very less interactions.
Gap after Book 1: few weeks, so not even a month, Jaron is king but he is mostly alone in his gardens, room as he said in book 2 and also he is still getting over what has happenedin book 1 especially the death of his family, so it is obvious he had minimal contact with Imogen.
Book 2:Takes place within 10 days, Imogen is there in pirates camp to help Jaron but they are doing their own things mostly and have only few interactions. Imogen being with the pirates is the only time I thought I might like her but in the end she got caught forcing Jaron to reveal himself.
Gap after Book 2: ~2 months, Imogen in Libeth,Jaron is in Castle recovering from injuries but his other friends are there in the castle while later Imogen gets kidnapped.
In Book 3 it is mentioned the events start ~3 weeks later.
In The False Prince, Imogen was a kind servant with potential (her mute act was intriguing) and at the end of Book 1 she was talking about like their is a huge difference between her and Jaron now and mentioned her inability to repay Jaron for releasing her from her debts, which I did not see as love. But in book 2 she stays at the castle despite being free to leave (as told in the ending of Book 1 she can go home whenever she want) and suddenly claims closeness to Jaron in Book 2, despite their distance in Book 1’s ending. The romance lacks buildup—no chemistry, just friendship at best. Jaron’s breakdown over her “death” in Book 3 could’ve been grief (like with Mott), not love, and I think her staying dead would’ve let Jaron grow without forcing a romance and maybe if she had remained dead I could have seen the romance but she was brought back in the end after being absent for like most of the book. Also Jaron’s so young like fifteen at the end of war before epilogue so —an open-ended ending would’ve been better. The later books did not help me in liking the romance either as there were always conflicts between them and Jaron keeping secrets from Imogen is really an issue now? Does not Imogen know Jaron by now (I think Jaron was very reasonable in keeping secrets).
By The Shattered Castle (Book 5)(I did not want to read it because I heard the plot was the wedding but still read it because I like Jaron as a character a lot),Imogen’s contributions (like her speech) felt overhyped as Jaron was literally taking risks and carrying the story on his own mostly, and her plan to make it seem like she was cheating on Jaron was cruel and unlike Jaron’s secretive cunning schemes. Their constant conflict over secrets is tiring, and the resolution feels rushed. I don’t get her as a character or love interest—she’s flat compared to Jaron’s spark(maybe that is because of the story being told from Jaron's pov but still I think the other characters have more personality than Imogen in the series). Also every character in the series had a goal of their own or dreams of their own but what was Imogen's goal or dream?I didn't get it .She felt like a plot device to cause drama mostly at times. Does anyone else find Imogen disappointing or the romance unconvincing?
