I was getting all romantic about my kid and nature. I used to believe that some children were naturally inclined to be kind to animals and living things. Maybe there’s some truth in that, but today I believe it’s nurture, not nature, that results in kindness and love for living things. I remember my little one wanting to smash ants in pure panic when he thought they were invading his space. I would stop him and ask him to watch, pay attention, and realize that some creatures are dangerous (avoid) and others harmless (observe). In Nada at the foot of Mount Rokko we have what feels like unlimited variation of bugs, creatures and animals. Some are wicked dangerous, but still beautiful. Today at the skate park he found a kamemushi (shield bug) which he held gently and carefully for maybe 15 minutes, and then delicately helped it get onto a little tree. This is a good sign. Respect for nature. Kindness expressed to living things. I think the real quality of a place to live, whether it’s a city or otherwise, can be measured in just a few ways. I think some metrics will become moot over time because of change, like how technology makes it possible for me to use remote access to take care of customers’ tech needs worldwide no matter where I am in the world. That’s tech-driven change. One thing that won’t change and shouldn’t change is play. Kobe has some of the best parks, and more of them, than maybe anywhere I’ve ever lived or visited. On a jog with my little guy we may pass a dozen parks, and stop and play at half of them, which makes for one happy kiddo, and one happy papa and mama when little man passes out at night from exhaustion. I just love ❤️ Kobe. In Kobe, there’s a little bakery at the entrance to the shotengai at Rokkomichi, across from the grocery store Co-op. There’s a park bench in front of the glass of the bakery storefront. I was sitting out there for about 40 minutes with my two boys, watching some interesting YouTube while we were munching on some bread. My wife was nearby at an appointment. When my wife came out we all walked into co-op to get some groceries. When I got to the register I realized I didn’t have my wallet. But I had paid for the bread at the little bakery with cash out of my wallet. It was gone. Zairyu card, drivers license, credit cards, bank cash card, cash, everything. Lost. It had been over an hour. My heart sunk into my ankles. I ran outside, looking under the bench. Nothing. Total panic moment. It was gone. Just then, one of the girls in the shop ran out, waving at me. She handed me what you see on the picture: my wallet, wrapped in one of their pastry bags, sealed with a bow. Everything was inside. My wife says I’m lucky, and she’s right. This is Japanese culture. There are exceptions, just like there are exceptions in any culture. I’m lucky that the person who found my wallet on the ground was raised in this culture that places such priority and importance on harmony in ones 世間 (seken), ones world. My son always goes for the red sports car. I had to have a talk with him about cutting off the girl, who was quite kind about the whole incident. Had a wonderful time today with friends and iced coffee across from Akashi castle. Thankful for iced coffee, so friendship doesn’t have to wait until Fall or Winter. We walked across to the moat surrounding the castle before leaving. There were even more turtles 🐢 swimming with the koi in the moat around Akashi castle than last time. @eitoyasutoko Sensei building up my sons skating strength today at @goodskates_inc since we joined my sons confidence has skyrocketed, he’s getting awesome exercise and he’s having fun. Only a few months ago he couldn’t stand on skates without falling. Now he’s pulling his teacher around the track.
