Loving Cassandra Fallacy! I'm not entirely sure what Janus was talking about in the first section that he was lying about killing Sandy with the sword, maybe I'm just not smart enough. I'm assuming he was lying about it?

I'm guessing you mean the 'The length of a human life is inversely proportional to said life’s intrinsic worth' bit. Someone already asked about this in the comments - I'll break it down as best I can.

To wield Thomas's sword, you need to convince it of the relative morality of whatever you're planning on using it for. If you're using it to slice a banana or open a jam jar or whatever, that'll be easy. If it's murder or violence, that's going to be hard, because the sword is a bit of a wimp and doesn't believe in taking lives unless it's for a good reason. (You probably knew all of this already, I know, just establishing the stakes.)

And in this case, Janus has set up a narrative situation for himself where to make it plausible for him to draw the sword and kill Cassandra, he needs to make a convincing argument to the sword for why that's moral and just - that also is convincing for the reader. Because, remember, this bit is (probably) just a story he's telling.

So, with that in mind:

"The length of a human life is inversely proportional to said life’s intrinsic worth." - the longer someone lives, the less worth their life has. e.g., a 17 year old should be considered more valuable to society than an 80 year old.

Janus then goes on to explain that Cassandra (ancient, has been around for a while) has used up all her value to the world and accomplished enough for her life to be forfeit. Thomas, on the other hand, is young as has potential. This is equivocation fallacy, he's comparing two things that aren't strictly comparable, and also he's a bit wrong in the sense that useful value isn't, like, a non-renewing resource.

He then levels utilitarianism at the sword, saying that because of all that, Thomas's life is worth MORE if you put all of that on a weighted scale, so killing Cassandra so she can't kill Thomas is the morally right thing to do.

Which is all bullshit, but hopefully the reader doesn't know that, which means that Janus has successfully fulfilled the narrative conditions to draw the sword and write his little murder fanfiction about him being a hero and saving everyone. Until Sandy interrupts, anyway.

You might also notice that Sandy never actually gave any indication she was planning on killing Thomas. And that the sword capitulated far too quickly to a flawed argument. Like a lot of things Janus says, if you look at any of it too closely it starts to fall apart.

And then it evolved into Pat getting a bucket of sea water to pour onto Remus. Giggling all the way. Virgil, Logan, and Janus are not doing anything about it - but all are at least a little bit amused.

Vic has lost his shit, Carrie would think that it would be a waste of food if not for Remus munching away on the pusit happily... even if some of it got sandy and/or soggy, in between all the whining noises he's making.

Remus will probably make a cannibalism joke about it too... because kraken.

Little fun-facts about Sada before I have to log off for the day :3 ;; (NOT SPOILER-FREE)

My Sada is currently 6'8 (2 meters :) ) Might make her taller to make my Emmet muse seethe.

She insists that her son and her team's names start with the letter "A" as a coincidence. She did not name Janus the Brute Bonnet (the ancient Amoonguss, the braincell haver of the group with future vision, who got spoiled of the end game) just to prove her point--and go right back to naming the latter pokemon she caught with the letter "A".

Her team has learned moves different than their own mostly via interacting with each other :3c Though Apate the Scream-Tail and Athena the Slither Wing do not get along, they both adore Sada and had to spend time so much together. Athena learned psychic move Zen Headbutt from Apate, and taught the fighting move Drain Punch in return.

Janus the Brute Bonnet is the spoiled fan who had tried not to get attached but failed in the end. He still has visions from the future, but none affected him as much as the bitter truth about the professor's accident.

Most of her Pokemon has free reign over the time machine. They can go back to the past and return, but their yard privileges get taken away if they cause too much trouble. Looking at Roaring Moon >:C This is also why they appear to be just caught when a certain someone fights the protag.

Apate the Scream-Tail and Aglaea the Flutter Mane are Sada's fashion inspirations /twinsies. Apate's hair and fangs + Flutter Mane's mane and red gems around her neck matches with Sada's hair, fans and necklace :3c

Sada has the Pokemon buttons to let her Pokemon make simple sentences (and Aite the Sandy Shocks use it only to press 'Mad' several times a day).

Her Pokemon info + moves under cut (also in the bio);;

Apate the Scream-Tail: Her favorite Pokemon for sure. Scream-Tail and Sada’s bond could rival her and the baby Koraidon’s bond, almost. Both tricksters, they had fun whenever Professor needed time to unwind. With her fairy and psychic abilities, Scream Tail would help Sada sleep when an intervention was inevitable. Apate was named for being a trickster, and the daughter of the night :)

Athena the Slither Wing: The fighter pokemon who is wise enough not to fight unless necessary. This also is why she was selected to be in Sada’s team, when she did not attack Sada but only defended herself.  Named Athena for being a goddess of wisdom and war. A pokemon of few words/cries, she is more fond of being present during Sada’s research. Due to Sada and Apate the Scream Tail being inseparable, Athena ended up learning Zen Headbutt as well. (Apate’s bad influence.)

Janus the Brute Bonnet: The Pokemon from the ancient past who saw the future he never though he would end up being a part of. As a Brute Bonnet tied to nature and the dark forces, he was gifted with the power of Precognition. This gift meant that he knew what would become of Sada when he befriended her, and his resistance to being her friend to spare himself the heartache. However, even the pokemon of two faces (the red and white both foreseeing the Pokeballs of future and also symbolizing two faces that look into the past and the future) could not save himself or defy the fate.

Aglaea the Flutter Mane: Joining the professor out of boredom, Aglaea is the most competitive of them all: a pokemon of various moves, all a different type, except Fairy. Though the fae origin is not denied, Aglaea leans more into its ghost nature. She and the Professor enjoy each other’s company, and Sada’s fashion choices can be partly blamed on this Flutter Mane’s influence.

Aite the Sandy Shocks: This grumpy Pokemon has lived for thousands of years, before being snatched by Sada’s time machine. He is known for his mischief, despite being grounded enough to control his impulses… for the most time. Enabler of Sada’s most reckless plans, he got his name due to being a god of mischief, blind folly, rash action and reckless impulse. He is basically the shoulder devil of Sada.

Achlys the Roaring Moon: Perhaps the strongest pokemon and almost ace Pokemon of the professor, Achlys’ and Sada’s relationship is of respect and deep trust. Though not affectionate and outright cold toward each other, Sada loves the dragon more than anything, and can be found wrestling with the roaring moon as a part of her training regime. Achlys is indifferent toward humans, and acts almost like the leader of the team, keeping everyone in line. After Sada’s accident, he barely accepted his position to remain as a part of the Paradise Protection Program. He had returned to the ancient past, but can be summoned by AI Sada into the present during the final battle.

Asph had made his way from New Rome to Houston and was now back in his native D.C. He hadn’t been here in fifteen years. His quest head lead him across the country. Back home. But why? Nothing in his prophecy's words would make him think about D.C. If anything, San Francisco or New York would be the American cities. Even more likely, Rome, Italy—the source of it all. Why in all that makes prophecies prophecies had Asph been lead to his hometown?

He looked around, noticing the exact house he ended up in front of. One story. Off-white. Dark red door. The only difference was the lack of children’s toys scattered around the front yard. His house of seven years.

Neglecting trying to figure out the quest, Asph moved to open the door. It still had the same code. 12021, Sheamus’s birthday with a zero interjected to break up the date. Twenty-five years of the same code. They really should change that. Someone could break in.

Well, good for Asph if nothing else. Even if this would be considered breaking in. Would his own parents even recognize him? Last they’d seen, he was a scared seven year old in his brother’s baggy hand-me-downs. Now he was twenty-two and wore clothes that actually fit. Then there were all the scars he had. The side of his head came to mind, as well as his calloused hands, and the brand on his forearm.

"Thompson?" a woman's voice called out. "I thought you wouldn't be back for another hour?"

"Then he probably won't be."

Glass shattering. A woman with skin as pale as his, hair sandy as the beach, and eyes blue as the pool water came through the door leading to the kitchen. Danielle’s eyes scanned his form, latching onto a small leather pouch tied to his belt. “Asphalt?”

“Good to know you remember the son you abandoned’s name.”

“I didn’t—you weren’t abandoned. You were left for your father. It’s what he said to do. Did… Did he not take you in?”

“The gods aren’t known for caring about their kids. Spent six years training with a wolf and another making my way to civilization. Had to take an ER detour. Super fun. Where’s Dad?” He changed the topic, not wanting to talk about his time with Lupa. Or the year-long trip from the Wolf House to New Rome. Or New Rome in general. It was a bad split-decision to enter. Curiosity was sated, but now Asph had to deal with his mom’s questions—something he was not apt to do.

“Book club,” she answered. “I’m sorry Asph, but your father—”

“The father who never claimed me.”

Silence.

“I— What?”

“He never claimed me. Still don’t know who he is.”

“Janus. It was,” she glanced at the vial around his neck, red string tying it together. “He’s Janus.”

“The bitch who fights with himself?” That... that actually explained a lot. Gods may not have DNA, but they sure did pass on traits. All of the angry kids of Mars, every Ceres kid's green thumb. A more fitting explanation for his own constant turmoil could not exist.

“Don’t talk about your father like that!” Danielle admonished.

“Why not? He’s not my dad. I am Thompson Carpenter’s son, or did you forget that? He is the man who raised me despite not being his own blood. If any man in my life deserves the title 'father’ or 'dad,’ it’s him, not Janus.

"Or am I no longer allowed that title? Am I even your son anymore, or is that stripped from me, too?"

"Of course you're my son. Why would you— I love you, Asphalt."

"Could have fooled me."

"Asphalt, please sit down." Danielle moved to the couch, sitting and tapping the seat next to her. "We can talk about this. About why you're here and your feelings—"

"My feelings? You want to know my feelings?" He didn't move to sit down. Quite the opposite. Asph started pacing the living room, nails digging into his palms from clenching his hands so hard. "Abandonment, for starters. Regret, for being the reason you and Dad stopped working. Anger, for being left in the dark with no explanation. Hurt for the same reason."

Asph stopped. A picture on the wall caught his attention. His family, all crowded around Danielle in a hospital room. A small baby in her arms that she was giving a forehead kiss. Thompson smiled down at her. Nine year old Sheamus and his toothy grin were the only ones starring at the camera.

"I wish we could go back to that. To the tranquility of when you were first born. Of when we could all believe that it would work out. Your grandfather captured the perfect moment and we'll never get it back."

He turned to his mother. "I do to."

He hadn't even know there was a time when they were happy. His whole life something had been off. But now that he knew that there had been a time the Carpenters were happy—that was all he wanted. Not some stupid prophecy hanging over his head.

(Of course, without the stupid prophecy he wouldn't be here, but wouldn't that be just the same? The family of three had been happy before he came along.)

"I should go. Before Dad gets home. But here—" Asph ran to the kitchen, grabbed a sticky note and a pen, write down a phone number, and gave her the note. "—It's Sheamus's number. I don't have a phone, but he'll be able to get to me. Or you can just talk to him instead."

"Sheamus?"

"He cares about me. Wish I could say the same for you."
