Just to add my incoherent babblings about Chandler, pls forgive if they sound absolutely off the rails, this is just a collection of my thoughts--
--Chandler never had a model of successful romantic love. His parents didn't love each other and, as far as we know, neither of them had any lasting meaningful romantic relationship
--Chandler's experience is that friendships are good, relationships are bad. So if he loves Monica truly, then that means they are best buds, just bros, platonic soulmates, and yeahhh he wants to sleep with her but relationship bad! so it's not love
--even Ross and Rachel ended poorly so Chandler has no good experiences of love.
--and then add in Kathy and Janice (my one true love) and Chandler is just like THANK GOD MY BEST FRIEND WILL NEVER LEAVE ME
All of this is just to say that Chandler probably didn't even realize he wanted to be with Monica forever and that's why he tried to make the marriage pact because he was like obviously we'll be friends we're friendsoulmates???
And also that I agree with everything you've said and I just love them so much????
Adding to this post about Chandler being in love with Monica before the show even started, now that I'm thinking about it, I think a part of Monica might have been in love with him, too.
It's just... they are so comfortable with each other, in ways few friends, even best ones, are.
I don't mean to diminish the importance of friendship or say that "men and women can't be friends" (even if we take Friends for example, you have Phoebe and Joey, Chandler and Rachel, Joey and Rachel before they fell in love, all of those friendships are strong and important), no, not at all, but specifically in this case, I think they both have been in love with each other for a while but didn't think the other was interested, so they never mentioned it / acted upon it.
That's why their transition from friends to lovers went so smoothly - it wasn't the case of them suddenly developing new feelings towards each other, suddenly realizing what they feel towards each other is more than friends' love, the feelings were always there, they just found out they were reciprocated.

Janice As Deus Ex Machina: An Essay
Janice Litman-Goralnik (née Hosenstein) is a once-a-season staple on the classic television sitcom, FRIENDS. The character is oftentimes overlooked by the FRIENDS gang but plays a crucial role in the development of the characters.
Janice’s character is developed as a plot device and as a guide for the characters, in particular her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Chandler Bing. Janice acts the sitcom’s Manhattanite deus ex machina, where her inclusion in the story allows Chandler, as well as Joey as he becomes her friend, and Ross as he realises he's been neglectful to his friends when he sees how attentive Janice can be, to mature so that he can grow up and partake in more serious and sensible relationships. The ancient Greek literary term refers to “a concept or character introduced for the purpose of resolving a conflict and leading characters to the correct path of their journey.” She enters the story at precisely the right time to ensure positive character development. Her presence is short-lived but purposeful, whereby she acts as an assistant to Chandler Bing’s destiny but is not, and cannot be, part of his destiny herself, as she is sometimes misconstrued.
For Chandler Bing, in particular, Janice’s arrival in the episodes of FRIENDS mark moments of low self-esteem and times where a perspective from outside the occasionally dangerously co-dependent group is necessary to grant sage advice. Often, Janice’s ephemeral presence also grants Chandler a chance for important personal growth.
Below is a more in-depth analysis of Janice working as a deus ex machina for Chandler Bing:
1. 105 The One With The East German Laundry Detergent
Breaking up with Janice allows Chandler to experience and participate in a break up that doesn’t end in heartbreak for either party. Here she shows Chandler that breaking up does not have to equate to heartbreak, he’s been afraid of them for as long as he can remember, (almost as afraid as he is of commitment) having witnessed his parent’s devolution into terrible role models when their marriage broke down. She also gives him a chance to get to know Phoebe a little better, she’ll be important in his life as she teaches him to be comfortable in his skin.
2. 114 The One With The Candy Hearts
In a time of self-doubt and job dissatisfaction, Janie again appears. This time with different advice. Here she is a friendly face for Chandler when his two best friends are preoccupied with others, in the immediate environment Joey has neglected Chandler for his date, but the more long term issue is the loss of Monica as she is preoccupied with helping Rachel fit into their group. The other thing she highlights for Chandler is that romance need not be permanent. Chandler has tried since his parents’ divorce to create permanent relationships in his life, he has trouble letting go of people and suffers when they let go of him. Janice leads him to the truth that not all relationships last forever.
3. 203 The One Where Heckles Dies
Janice is pregnant when she meets Chandler next, (clearly over Chandler) and as a result, Chandler considers the place for children and a family in his future.
4. 224 The One With Barry and Mindy's Wedding / 301 The One With The Jam
Chandler Bing has watched all of his friends pair off and is looking online for love, Janice shows up to show him he has options. She also shows up just as Monica breaks up with Richard, allowing this break up to be the first Monica has to deal with without her best friends Chandler. In doing so, Monica realises, perhaps not to the extent of comprehending it to be romantic love, that she needs Chandler’s presence in her life.
Chandler gets a chance to experience his first real relationship, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities to make room for a new person in his life and to deal with the messier aspects of relationships like custody, ex-husband’s, and disapproving friends. It is destined to not last but he gets to experience an almost-healthy relationship for the first time in his life. They break up not long after and again Chandler gets the chance to learn he is different from his father and mother. He also learns to put the happiness of someone else before his own.
5. 306 The One With The Flashback
Janice nudges both Monica and Chandler towards their long-buried feelings for each other.
6. 415 The One With All The Rugby
Janice's appearance in this episode is an uplifting one. Having lost all his confidence, Chandler needs her outside perspective that he is both a valuable person and a desired one. Her presence also allows him to realise he was never in love with her, rather, in love with his own, as well as her, infatuation.
7. 707 The One With Ross' Library Book
Planning a wedding and realising the sacrifices necessary to combine two lives, Chandler's run-in with Janice proves to both him and his fiancee that the love he and Janice may have shared was fake, flimsy and based on the unsustainable Hollywood portrayal of "movie love," ultimately assuaging any doubts he may have had about Monica and his relationship being fated, showing him that anything else is a silly idealised version of love and that what he and Monica share is takes time and effort, yes, but is real and rewarding like no other love they have been in with anybody else.
8. 824 The One Where Rachel Has A Baby
Janice arrives just as Chandler and Monica plan to start a family, reminding Chandler there is no other woman he'd like to raise a family with. And there are no other features he would want on his biological babies than Monica's nose and dimples.
9. 921 The One With The Fertility Test
Janice's surprise presence here reaps disastrous results for Chandler's sperm count, resulting in the adoption journey he and Monica take that leads them and their twins to ultimate happiness. It also ensures that the pregnancy two years later comes as a completely wonderful surprise.
Janice's role here is also to calm Chandler's fears about being a father. His friends are too close to him to see that their fruitless efforts are grating on their souls and Janice lends an outside perspective that reminds Chandler of what he's always though and felt in his heart, he and Monica are meant to be together and they're meant to have children.
10. 1015 The One Where Estelle Dies
Janice, emulating her role from season 7, gives Chandler another chance to stand up for himself, to fight for his future and his family against the force of nature that she is. He twists her words and issues guilt so that she will leave him and his family alone, finally learning that not only can he stand up for himself, but that he can do it without being hurtful and instead use his talent for wordplay and manipulation to his advantage and for the betterment of his family.
And if you don't want to read Janice as Deus ex machina, read her as the relationship that allows Chandler to grow up and stop idealising live, realising that the real this is work and takes time and is with Monica. But she does drop by like an ephemeral agent of destiny rather coincidentally when Chandler needs a boost, guiding him to happiness but never the solution to his loneliness.
There is also evidence of her guiding the other characters as well. She forces Joey to learn tolerance in a time when he has no friends outside the group. He's just lost his job and she attempts to show him how to cheer up a little. By dumping Ross she illustrates to him how ugly his moping and whining is, plus he gets to see that maybe he hasn't treated his friend, Chandler, so well if he keeps returning to this woman who smothers people with affection. And she reminds Rachel that her first priority should be Emma not her status with Ross for a time, letting her know that she has to learn to be self-sufficient and reliable to herself because no one else is going to help her raise Emma.

friends
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
it's chandler. I'm a basic bitch. I don't think I need to tell you why I think you know.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
joey 🥰
Tumblr media
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
JANICE! I WILL STAND BY THIS FOREVER JANICE IS AWESOME I WOULD LOVE TO BE FRIENDS WITH HER, THE WAY THEY KEEP RUNNING INTO HER IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST RUNNING GAGS EVER, AND HER AND CHANDLER WERE SOULMATES
Tumblr media
my personal headcanon is that one of her kids and one of mondler's kids start dating and get married so that their lives are officially intertwined forever
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
it's janice again
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
I don't know? I mean they can certainly all be problematic at times simply because it's an older show, but within the fandom there's not really not
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
look. I'm not just hopping on the bandwagon here, I mean, I'm actually a ted moseby defender (a lukewarm one tho) but I genuinely think that Ross is a terrible person. and not just cause he's a "nice guy" or whatever, he's just incredibly narcissistic and prideful in the worst possible way, but most importantly he's just a bad friend. and in this show, that's the worst thing you can be. I think this video describes it pretty well for anyone who's interested.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
yeah ross again. wanna add that I know all the other characters make really bad and hurtful decisions too, they're people, but what gets me with ross is his complete inability to admit to and learn from his mistakes, which stems in his narcissism and pride. it's why I'm kind of a ted moseby defender, cause people usually just say he's bad by listing all the bad things he's done. and yeah, when you do that he sounds like a fucking horrible person, but what everyone discounts is that he basically always recognise his mistake after. the finale was as much of an insult to ted's character as robin and barney.
but as I've said before, if you (the general you) like ross that's completely fine. I like characters who've committed way worse crimes.
send me a fandom and I'll tell you...

i agree with that theory that janice is chandler’s soulmate and i kind of hate that after their last break up (when he tells her to give her first marriage a shot again) the show acts like he never had feelings for her. like, the writing and casting  unintentionally pounds in that he has a type and its domineering dark haired women.

RFA as Friends characters
This is my opinion and I kinda have reasoning for it.
Jaehee - Monica
Tumblr media
Jumin - Ross
Tumblr media
ZEN - Joey
Tumblr media
Seven - Phoebe
Tumblr media
MC - Rachel
Tumblr media
Yoosung - Chandler
Tumblr media
So explaination time
So why did I pick Monica for Jaehee = Ultimately I wanted Jaehee and Jumin to be the Gellers - I feel like this was the safe option as they would not be romantically together at all. I also used Monica so that Rachel (MC) can be best friends with her. Monica is also very hardworking and likes order which I feel applies to Jaehee.
Why Ross for Jumin = See above for reasoning for the Gellers siblings, I also liked the idea that MC as Rachel would be soulmates with Ross. Ross seems like one of the more well off characters from the show (despite the divorces), and some of his scenes gave me Jumin vibes.
Why Joey for ZEN = I feel like this is self-explanatory. Joey is the actor in the group, and he is the biggest flirt. Joey has a huge heart which I think also applies to ZEN and he cares a lot for his friends. He also has a thing for Rachel during the show which I kind of liked the idea of (Love Triangle between Jumin, MC and ZEN)
Why Phoebe for Seven = So I chose Phoebe because she has the weirdest lines and scenes out of the friends' characters. She is so confident no matter what, which I think applies to Seven. I think a lot of her quotes could also relate to Seven. She had a hard childhood but became a happy adult which kind of reminds me of Seven, and she also has a twin?? Like, come on.
Why Rachel for MC = So I chose this as I really wanted a love triangle between Jumin, MC and ZEN. I also wanted Jaehee and MC to be close friends like Monica and Rachel. I feel like how Rachel was the last (kind of) to join the group as she enters in the first episode just like the MC did in the game. She is thrown into this new life with these new friends.
Why Chandler for Yoosung = Really, he was the last character left. I feel like early seasons Chandler (Before he marries Monica) relates to Yoosung - He is trying to find love. Unlike Yoosung, he is scared of commitment. Chandler is smart and has a stable job (LIke After Ending Yoosung will have). Also, I LOVE the dynamic of ZEN and Yoosung, so he had to be the Chandler to ZEN’s Joey. Regarding the whole Monica (Jaehee) and Chandler (Yoosung) thing, I don’t mind it. It’s not my first ship, but it’s a good one.
Bonus - Saeran is obviously Ursula, V is Gunther (kind of part of the group but not at the same time), and Vanderwood can be Janice or Mike (if you ship Seven and Vanderwood)
I have no idea who Rika would be. Originally had her as Janice but that would mean Yoosung and Rika, and that's a huge No-No.
I tried to find a quote gif for Monica that fits with Jaehee and I couldn't. Sorry.

Monica and Chandler are possibly the cutest couple in Friends - they don't have the on-again, off-again that Ross and Rachel go through, they have a long history (unlike Mike and Phoebe), and they end the series with an incredible future ahead of them. And while they may not have realized that there was something between them until London, the signs that they are actually soulmates have been there all along.
RELATED: 10 Most Heartwarming Scenes In The Entire Friends Series
From the very beginning, these two Friends had a very special connection, and from their earliest season to their actual wedding, relationship, and beyond, Monica and Chandler were always endgame. Not sure if you can see it? These episodes prove they were always meant to be together.
10 The One With Pheobe's Husband (S2, E4)
Tumblr media
This isn't a particularly huge episode for Monica and Chandler, but they have an interaction here that is one of the earliest moments that fans start to realize how close they are. When Phoebe reveals that she is married, Monica gets upset that she didn't know - and this starts a chain reaction of people revealing each other's deep dark secrets. One of the best moments, though, is realizing that Monica and Chandler already knew each others - whether it's the underwear on the telephone wire or the third nipple.
9 The One At The Beach (S3, E25)
Tumblr media
The season three finale and the season four premiere (The One With The Jellyfish) both work as a great moment to prove that Monica and Chandler were always meant to be together. In this double-decker episode, Chandler is trying to convince Monica that he would be a good boyfriend for her (not particularly seriously), and ends up letting it go after he pees on her when she is stung by a jellyfish. This isn't just a fun episode to look back on, knowing that they end up together, but a sign that they were always thinking about the possibility, and that they were always making each other laugh - not to mention being willing to do anything to help each other out.
8 The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS (S5 E4)
Tumblr media
By season five, Monica and Chandler are together, but no one knows about it yet... which leads to some hilarity, when Rachel thinks Monica has a 'secret boyfriend' and talks about him in front of Chandler - inadvertently revealing that Monica called him 'the best she ever had'.
RELATED: The Friends Episodes That Prove Chandler & Janice Were Soulmates
This leads to a lot of hilarity (and a brilliant dance on the coffee table), but it's the end of the episode that really makes this sweet. Here, Chandler apologizes, and tells her that 'If I'm the best, it's only because you make me the best'. He may be talking about sex, but it's true for their relationship as a whole.
7 The One With All The Thanksgivings (S5 E8)
Tumblr media
Monica and Chandler's history stretches back to her high school days, when Chandler was Ross's college roommate and she and Rachel were best friends. This episode covers some of their earliest interactions in flashback, with Monica attracted to Chandler from the first time that she meets him. Of course, Chandler doesn't feel the same until the next year, after Monica has lost a lot of weight... a story that ends with him losing a toe! While both these flashbacks show that there has always been something between these two, the really sweet moment is at the end, when Monica shows she would do anything for him - to the point that she literally puts a raw turkey on her head and dances around just to make him feel better.
6 The One Where Everybody Finds Out (S5, E14)
Tumblr media
Monica and Chandler manage to keep their burgeoning relationship a secret for an impressively long time, but this episode is where it all comes out - and in true Friends style, it has to involve some ridiculousness. In order to try and force Monica and Chandler to admit their relationship, Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe concoct a plan to have Phoebe 'seduce' Chandler. Of course, it actually ends with Chandler bursting out that he can't, because he loves Monica - but his willingness to even go along with it in the first place shows how far he would go to make sure she is comfortable.
5 The One With The Joke (S6, E12)
Tumblr media
This episode includes one of the sweetest lines between Chandler and Monica (and that's saying something), after Phoebe insults her by calling her 'high maintenance'. Monica is offended at this, and ropes Chandler in to loudly proclaim in front of Phoebe and Rachel that Monica is extremely easy going. Of course, it's not particularly true, but after he finishes his pre-prepared speech, he tells her "You’re not easy-going, but you’re passionate, and that’s good. And when you get upset about the little things, I think that I’m pretty good about making you feel better about that. And that’s good too. So, they can say that you’re high maintenance, but it’s okay, because I like…maintaining you."
4 The One With The Proposal (S6, E24)
Tumblr media
This double-length episode is all about Monica and Chandler taking the next step - and it's one of the most iconic proposals in sitcom history. At first, it seems like it's going to be straightforward, with Chandler popping the question at dinner, but when Richard re-appears (and tells Monica he wants her back) things get complicated!
RELATED: Funniest Times Chandler Couldn't BE Any More Chandler
In the end, though, they propose to each other, Chandler finishing when Monica is too overwhelmed to, in their apartment filled with candles. It's sweet, romantic, and perfect for them both.
3 The One Where Joey Tells Rachel (S8, Ep16)
Tumblr media
Monica and Chandler's relationship isn't the focus of this episode, as that goes to Joey and Rachel - but they do have a side story because Phoebe has met a man that she thinks is Monica's soulmate. Chandler does get jealous, as they talk about their love of cheese and building a house of it... but in the end, when Chandler tells her that he is upset and that she probably thinks he's not her soulmate, she tells him that she doesn't believe in soulmates, just like him.
2 The One With Monica And Chandler's Wedding (S7, Ep 23/24)
Tumblr media
Where would this list be without the double-length episode where Monica and Chandler are getting married, and absolutely everything seems to be going wrong? In the end, though, it's clear they are meant to be together. Not just because they manage to overcome everything from a Greek Orthodox minister to Chandler's fear about becoming The Bings, but because Chandler says that he knew he wanted to be married the moment he saw her walking down the aisle - and because when he thought she was pregnant, he was actually happy, not freaked out.
1 The One With The Birth Mother (S10, E9)
Tumblr media
There are so many moments in the final season that prove how perfect Monica and Chandler are for each other, but the episode where they meet Erica may be the best one. Here, they are trying to adopt, and end up meeting Erica... but find out it's a mix up, and she thinks they are someone else. In the end, it's Chandler who convinces Erica, just by being completely honest about how incredible Monica is. How much they love each other, and how great they are together, just shines through every scene.

Rejection
Rejection is a real artform.
It happens to millions of people every day, for all kinds of reasons. Getting rejected is one thing (and a certainly painful thing) but being the rejecter is a whole other challenge. More so if you actually give a shit about the other person’s feelings. Some people don’t and will straight up reject someone without even the slightest effort to cushion the blow. But for a lot of us, rejecting someone is the fucking worrrrrrst feeling, and there seem to be a few common strategies for lessening the stone cold awfulness of it.
I mentioned recently this boys camp I worked at one summer when I was 18. I’d become really close friends with this one guy, and when we all reunited for the staff Christmas party months later, he decided to get exceptionally intoxicated and spend a full hour telling me how IN LOVE with me he was. He was so fucking sweet and I adored him so much but it was definitely fuckin friendzone city as far as I felt, so I was going to have to crush his dreams. But given how long he’d just spent pouring his heart out to me, I couldn’t just be like, “OMG flattered but sorry I don’t like you that way.” Cushioning this particular blow would take some work, so I ended up matching him for length of speech, and spent about an hour explaining the reality of my situation. Which was that I felt so incredibly blessed to have met a friend for life in him, I couldn’t bare to give into my feelings of attraction for him. Did I actually have feelings of attraction for him? No. A bit of a fib? Sure. But I figured since I was technically rejecting him, and would never have to prove that I was attracted to him, I could bend the truth a little for the sake of his ego. All we ever want is to feel wanted. So if I can somehow make a guy feel wanted while also rejecting him, that’s a bullseye for me.
I know a guy who’s got a pretty impressive rejection line for the scores of women he leaves in the dust. Instead of the usual lothario excuse of not wanting to commit to one woman, this guy tells girls that he ultimately is on a search for a woman to settle down with, and that’s why he’s rejecting them. He’ll say stuff like, “What we have is super hot and fun, but I just don’t think you and I are meant to get married and have kids so I don’t want to waste each other’s time.” Then just moves onto the next chick. Definitely a fib on his part and one that I applaud, for the sake of sparing feelings at least. He flatters the girl by saying what they have is hot and fun, and then delivers the blow that he doesn’t want to keep seeing her, simply because she’s not quite his soulmate. Instead of sounding like an aimless fuckboy, he sounds like a sensible guy who’s just looking for his true match. Brilliant!
One of my friends is casually fucking a smoker right now and she’s not even stressed about the inevitable rejection. She says, “Oh yeah, he knows that I can’t actually date a smoker so there’s no future here.” This one’s great because it’s a rejection she can ultimately deliver at any time, and she can be as stone cold as she wants and it probably won’t hurt his feelings that badly, because the reason she’s rejecting him isn’t really about him. Even if it is.
Twice in my life I’ve had guys reject me for reasons of mental illness. One guy said his anxiety issues just made him too overwhelmed at the prospect of a serious relationship with anyone, even though he thought I was amaaaazing. And the other guy said his anxiety made him overwhelmed by me. I was too incredible and deserved more than he was able to give me, because of his issues. Both reasons ending up being bullshit (first guy got a girlfriend a month later and second guy eventually admitted he “just wasn’t smitten” with me) but in retrospect, I appreciate that they went for the anxiety excuse because it gave my ego something to cling to; something that didn’t make me feel like an unlovable loser.
The other classic rejection cushion is telling someone that you’re not over your last relationship. Relationship baggage is a great excuse because it allows you to really play jazz with the rejection. You could say you’re still not over your ex, or you’ve got trust issues because of it, or you just need to be alone right now. So many options that you can mix and match. It’s also an airtight excuse because it’s not something the rejectee could ever prove wrong. Sure you come off a little pathetic, but that might make them feel less pathetic, which is a real win in the blow-cushioning department.
Rejecting someone with care takes real finesse, and probably a little bit of lying, but I believe the effort is always worth it, because rejection fucking blows. So shoutout to all the nice folks out there who do their best to let people down easy! Like when Chandler actually bought a plane ticket to Yemen so he wouldn’t hurt Janice’s feelings. We need more Chandlers in this world.

Innocently played a suggested video about whether or not Chandler and Janice from Friends were soulmates, and near the end of the video they use Wesley and Liz from 30 Rock as an example of the trope used between Chandler and Janice and I just..... Even YouTube is calling me out now lmao wow.

I would mostly agree with that analysis, except that, by the same logic as Chandler+Janice, Ross and Rachel might just be soulmates. If Mondler aren't soulmates, then this definition of the word isn't "they have the best relationship", right?, which Ross and Rachel don't have, but, like Chandler and Janice, the universe kept throwing them together through everything
Who are the soulmates for chandler, monica, joey, phoebe, ross and rachel?
Now this is going to be an unpopular opinion but I don't believe that Mondler are soulmates. I think that Chandler's soulmate (if they exist) is Janice because of the way they randomly bump into each other all the time. It might just be a coincidence but also fate- depending on what you believe in. Monica's soulmate might be the british guy that loves cheese (the one Pheobe tried to set her up with in season 8). Joey's soulmate is definitely Erin, the lone wolf girl that speaks 6 languages from season 7. Pheobe's soulmate is Mike or David (I love them both and they have amazing chemistry with her). The show wants us to believe that Ross and Rachel are soulmates and belong together but they seem really incompatible. I don't believe they're soulmates and should've ended up together. Their soulmates are still somewhere out there waiting for them.

That's actually a good point. I don't think your soulmate is someone you HAVE to be with. You can choose to be with someone else like Chandler chose to be with Monica rather than Janice.
