Professor Derrick Bell (November 6, 1930 - October 5, 2011) legal scholar and teacher, was the first African American law professor at Harvard Law School to achieve tenure and one of the first African American deans in a non-HBCU Law School. He was a founder of an academic model called critical race theory.
The eldest of four children, he was born to a working-class family in Pittsburgh. His parents were Derrick A. Bell Sr. and Ada Elizabeth Bell.
He graduated from Duquesne University. He received a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He joined the Department of Justice. Because of his interest in racial issues, he was transferred to the Civil Rights Division. He was pressed to relinquish his membership in the NAACP. He refused to quit and in retaliation, his superiors moved his desk into the Department’s hallway and reduced his docket of cases. He resigned from his job and went to work for the NAACP.
He married Jewel Hairston (1960-90) with whom he had three sons.
He became a professor at Harvard Law School, he achieved tenure. He moved to the University of Oregon to become the first African American dean of the law school there. He urged the law school to hire more people of color, and when it rejected an Asian American female applicant whom he felt was qualified, he resigned in protest. He returned to Harvard but took a leave of absence in protest when Harvard Law School declined to grant tenure to two professors of color. He accepted a position as a visiting professor at the New York University Law School.
He wrote several books and articles on issues of race and equality in the US. He published his most famous work, Race, Racism, and American Law. The Geneva Crenshaw Society, a think tank on critical race theory, is named after his most prominent fictional character. He published a critically acclaimed book, And We Are Not Saved: The Elusive Quest for Racial Justice. He outlined his views in his book, Faces at the Bottom of the Well.
He was survived by his second wife, Janet Dewart Bell. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Women’s Media Awards 2017
Ahora vamos con una nueva alfombra roja, roja de verdad. Se trata de los Women’s Media Awards y siempre es un placer ver una alfombra en la que la “carne” no es lo que más se ve. Vamos a ver la alfombra!
