Janther Week 2024
Tumblr media
Happy New Year dear Janther fans! We hope 2024 brings you happiness, contentment and lots of Janther.
Yes, Janther Week is happening this year, with some changes. Our lovely co-founder Mod Batbladders is taking the year off due to a very full plate, so we are being joined by the wonderful Mod Bogblisters to help Mod Beefbrain keep things running smoothly.
Due to these late changes and to buy everyone some time to get organised, we are pushing Janther Week 2024 back a bit.
Janther Week 2024 will begin on Saturday February 3rd and run until the Friday February 9th.
We hope you can join us, and remember that late submissions are always welcome!
The prompts are set and will be announced soon.
We can’t wait to see what you all create this year!

Something Stupid (Janther Week)
Tumblr media
Here's my entry for the quote prompt on Janther Week 2023.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid! That was the only thought that Gunther had while sparring with the practice dummy in the training yard. He struck one side of the dummy with his practice sword, causing the dummy to swing around and firmly smack his backside with one of its appendages. Gunther jumped, then sighed as he rubbed his stinging backside. No doubt, he deserved that after what he said a couple of nights ago . . ."
Find out what Gunther said here.

I've just been reading the most recent chapter of Dragonblade and I'm wondering why the characters seem to think Gunther's plan is so horrible.
It brought me back to the "Pride and Pollen" episode of JATD where Gunther sets in motion a plan to expose his father and prove dragon's innocence, but in the end he saves his father, clinging to this abusive relationship because it's the only one he has.
In Dragonblade his plan is similar, set in motion a course of events which will culminate in his father being exposed for the liar he is. By doing so Gunther would be aiding both himself and the kingdom; he would be freed from his father's abuse, the ever-present shadow of malice which has destroyed every other relationship he has attempted to form (S01 E11 "Three's a Crowd") and in doing so isolated him to a point where no one in the castle seems to consider him a friend, or consider his offers of friendship legitimate, and the Kingdom would no longer live under Magnus's thumb

Why are Jane and Jester horrified that Gunther is trying to break free of his abuser who is Literally plotting treason?

I love this! The art style and the angsty mini-story, it’s all just *chef’s kiss*

Happy Janther Week!
I'm late, but here is Day 1: Evanescent
Gunther's father tricks him into drinking a potion to make him forget all about his life in Kippernium when they move to a rival kingdom. One night, Gunther wakes up from a dream about someone, and it seems like he should know her. For the first time in a long time, he feels at home. But the harder he tries to remember the dream of this person he cares for, the faster it escapes his memory.

Stay Sharp (fanfic, 787 WC)
@flufftober
The cold autumn air nips at Jane's cheeks as she stands at the edge of the clearing, her bowstring taut and ready. The woods around them are a tapestry of gold, amber, and crimson, the leaves rustling softly in the breeze. She watches Gunther with a fond smile, her eyes following the rhythmic swing of his axe as he chops down firewood for the pit in the small, weathered shack they've found. Jane and Gunther, both knights in training, have been tasked with a mission to scout the area and ensure it is safe for their lord's upcoming visit. Despite their young ages — Jane is 15 and Gunther is 17 — they are skilled and determined, their bond forged through countless hours of training and shared adventures.
Gunther pauses for a moment, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his sleeve. He looks up and meets Jane's gaze, his eyes crinkling at the corners in a warm smile. "How's the lookout going, Jane?"
She nods, her eyes scanning the trees. "All clear so far. Keep an eye out for any signs of trouble, though. We don't want any surprises."
Gunther returns to his task, his axe biting into the wood with practiced precision. The sound of the chopping is a comforting rhythm, a reminder of their shared purpose and the bond they share. Jane's bow remains drawn, her eyes sharp and alert. She isn't just a knight in training; she's a skilled archer, and her role is to keep them both safe. The sun is beginning to set, casting long shadows across the clearing. The air grows colder, and Jane can see her breath in the air. She shifts her weight, her muscles coiled and ready for action. She knows that their mission is not just about gathering firewood; it's about ensuring that the area is secure and that they can provide for themselves in the wild.
Gunther finishes chopping a large log and drags it over to the pit. He stacks the wood neatly, his movements efficient and strong. Jane can't help but feel a surge of pride. Gunther has grown so much since they first started training together. He is brave, loyal, and always ready to face any challenge.
"Think you can find us some dinner while I finish up here?" Gunther asks, his voice carrying a note of hope.
Jane smiles and nods. "I'll see what I can do. Stay sharp."
She lowers her bow and moves silently into the woods, her steps light and sure. She scans the underbrush for any signs of game, her eyes and ears attuned to the slightest movement. The forest is quiet, but she knows that the quiet can be deceptive. She moves deeper into the woods, her senses on high alert.
After a few moments, she spots a small rabbit nibbling on some leaves. She raises her bow, her movements fluid and practiced. The arrow flies true, and the rabbit falls with a soft thud. Jane approaches it, her heart racing with the thrill of the hunt. She retrieves the arrow and the rabbit, securing them in her belt. As she makes her way back to the clearing, she hears a faint rustling in the bushes. She stops, her bowstring drawn once more. Her heart pounds in her chest, but she remains calm and focused. The rustling grows louder, and a small fox emerges, its eyes wide and cautious.
Jane lowers her bow. "Easy, little one," she murmurs
The fox hesitates, then darts away, disappearing into the underbrush. Jane breathes a sigh of relief and continues back to the clearing. When she returns, Gunther is finishing up the fire pit.
He looks up and grins when he sees the rabbit. "Nice catch, Jane. We'll have a good meal tonight."
Jane smiles and sets the rabbit down. "Let's get it cleaned and ready for the fire. We need to stay alert, but a good meal will do us both good."
Together, they prepare the rabbit and start the fire. The flames dance and crackle, casting a warm glow over the clearing. They sit by the fire, sharing the meal and the silence, their bond stronger than ever in the face of the cold, autumn night.
As they eat, Jane looks at Gunther, her heart full of gratitude and affection. "We make a good team, don't we?"
Gunther nods, his eyes reflecting the firelight. "The best. We'll get through anything together."
Jane smiles, feeling a sense of peace and belonging. In this moment, surrounded by the cold, autumn woods and the warmth of the fire, she knows that they're more than just knights in training. They are friends, partners, and a team that can face any challenge.

Day 4: Consume
Jane wolfs down her stew in her typical dragon-style hunger while her friends laugh as they tease her eating habits. Then, Jane notices Gunther watching from afar and invites him to join them. After a few days of casual conversation around the dinner table, she begins to see a different side to Gunther. Perhaps he isn’t as much of a biscuit-weevil as she thought.

Some Headcanons/Thoughts about the JATD kids as adults because why not
(also bear with me I'm still fully waking up from a nap lol)
-Assuming the Castle is able to get new staff when they're older, I see Jester as like a fun uncle towards a lot of the younger new arrivals. He didn't really have anyone to be there for him when he first came to the castle as a child, and I don't think he would want anyone else to go through the same thing. If Jane and Gunther get apprentices of their own, he'd definitely dote on them and tell them embarrassing stories of Jane and Gunther's childhoods.
-as the Castle gets new staff and Jane and Gunther go out into the world, people in the Castle aren't as sheltered as they used to be. They get exposed to a lot more of all the good-and bad-things the outside world has to offer. I feel like Rake would be the person to remind people not to take the stereotypes they learn in the outside world to heart, and to not judge a book by its cover.
-Pepper definitely acts like a mother hen to any young newbies to the Castle.
-Smithy loves learning anything new about metalworking over the years, and isn't afraid to experiment or blend techniques, creating his own unique style that anyone familiar with him instantly recognizes as his.
-Jane is still super passionate, but over the years she learns how to better manage her emotions and mellow out. It takes a lot of time and practice though, and the stress of being a knight doesn't always help.
-Gunther's own emotional journey of knighthood, like Jane's, is an entire roller-coaster that probably deserves its own post lol
