I keep coming back to Prithviraj-starring Malayalam movies, largely because he continues to appear in these thriller/whodunnit movies I love so much. Not complaining about that, mind you. ... Unrelated, this is also the 3rd movie I've seen with Janani Iyer (same reason), and it is the best of her 3 that I've seen (Ma Chu Ka and the very frustrating Thegidi being the others), though in this case, her role is overall pretty minimal.

The twist with Prithviraj's character I think I already knew (maybe I'd read it on Wiki before?), but really, that doesn't do much for the movie overall. However, it is worth mentioning that we have so many movies where criminals respond to someone taking their money by going around just killing everyone - good guys, henchmen, essentially whomever they come across - so while this movie does feature some physical intimidation, it is kinda cool to see a criminal who takes a more logical, detective-like approach to figuring out what happened.

You do wonder, though, if the crash early on was planned, or if it was pure coincidence - and if it was pure coincidence, would the approach to finding the money have been the same if it hadn't happened? But anyhow, that's purely speculative - because it did happen, and the result is the story that we are watching.

The story follows a suspended detective (Prithviraj) who, through an accident, becomes involved in the mystery surrounding a group of friends and a significant amount of missing money (and, by the time he gets involved, missing people - including one suicide that takes place just a few hours after he becomes involved). The story unfolds as the movie progresses - he is told bits and pieces, and investigates the rest of it.

It's overall a pretty well-told story, though the twist (not the final one, but the one about why everything has played out as it is) is so completely predictable almost from the minute all 5 of the friends are introduced. Which is frustrating because, well, it feels like it is always this. A spurned heart, I guess, makes you want to kill your friends and force the person who spurned you to turn to you not because of true love, but because of the loss of the loved one. Kinda drastic, and probably mostly just a really good indication of what type of friend you really are (not a good one).

As in many thriller/whodunnits, a lot of things happen in the dead of night or in other settings that make it really hard for the audience to see things (power outage, etc.), which is sorta frustrating. It doesn't really change much in terms of the movie and plot, but man, it would be nice to be able to see what they've actually filmed. Maybe it is just me though.

This isn't my favorite Malayalam movie, but it is up there. I love their stories, I have to admit - especially as I watch these thrillers and whodunnits whilst at the same time watching Bollywood turn into a disgusting soup (redundant, I know) of remakes and scene-for-scene copies and nepotism-derived nonsense.
