I trained a neural network on over 30,000 examples of cookbook recipes, and it learned to produce new recipes of its own. You can learn more about the training process, and watch it learn to generate new recipes here.
They aren’t good recipes, though. In fact, almost all of them are terrible. I made one of them once, and now I still cringe at the faintest whiff of horseradish. SuperDeluxe made another of them, but at least they are professionals and were wise enough not to eat any.
Here for your entertainment I give you several more recipes the neural network has generated, with the caveat that if you should try to prepare or, god forbid, actually consume one of these, I am absolutely not responsible for the consequences.
Small Sandwiches

1 pinch salt 3 bay leaves 2 garlic cloves 1 dash black pepper 6 large garlic cloves 1/4 cup along with 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon salt, optional 1/4 teaspoon white pepper 4 teaspoon sugar 3 tablespoon peanut butter 1/2 cup coconut
----FILLING----
1 cup minced season tomatoes 2 cup hot water 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoon the seasoned salt 1 cup margarine, melted 1 lb jumbo shrimp 1 or freshly ground black pepper 1 up 1 thai shrimp; finely chopped 1 garlic clove, minced
Mix all ingredients except cheese and process 1 hour. Pour over ribs.
Cover and bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve with warm milk and marinade distributed; prepare the bottoms.
Watch the end of the fillets to the heat and set in a bowl and heat at this low for 5 minutes, until softened. Top with a little the next 2 ingredients; spoon the one day, 1 1/2 hours. Pour liquid into thin baking pan.
Combine lime juice, lime juice, finely grated cheese and water in a small saucepan and reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 20 minutes at medium-high speed until thickened.
Yield: 4 servings
Tart Cover Shrimp Butter Wol

Before we even get into the nitty gritty of this article, I want to really quickly touch on something that recently happened in the fitness influencer world. This past week, a huge IG fitness influencer, Brittany Dawn, made headlines for scamming her followers out of hundreds of dollars by selling them what was supposed to be “personalized” workout and meal plans but instead were just basically the standard fitness ebooks. A word of warning: please do your research on the person you’re “hiring” to become your trainer! Even if they’re online. Choose quality over appearance—some people look good and don’t have the certification or training themselves to be able to spot correct form or even guide you on proper movement.
That being said, I would love to tell you that every fitness product being promoted and sold on IG is legitimate. I get it, there are so many products that look so damn good, but they just don’t make any sense. Trust me, I’ve tried quite a few products myself out of curiosity. I’m here to give you the full review on some trendy fitness products that I’ve tried over the years and whether they work (spoiler: most don’t) and the “science” behind the products (or, more accurately, lack thereof).
1. Weight Loss Protein Powder
I’ll start with this: there was this one particular protein powder that was DELICIOUS. For fear of legal repercussions I can’t really, like, name-name them…but it was a UK-based company and every IG influencer was at one point promoting the living crap out of it. Good marketing, as we will come to learn, does not a good product make. I did further research on said product, and found out that their whole nutrition label was a potentially (most likely?) a lie. As in, their shakes allegedly contained wayyy more carbs, and less protein, than were disclosed on the label.
That said, I used the protein powder as a post-workout supplement and NOT as a meal replacement, and it provided a better alternative for a sweet tooth craving (because this powder did taste really, REALLY good). I do not suggest ever using protein powder as a meal replacement if the powder is considered to be a low-calorie, fat burning powder with a high caffeine content. Also, the FDA does not regulate these supplement claims, so whatever you see on the nutrition labels and the miracle working promises are all up to the discretion of the company…meaning they could easily bullsh*t the whole thing. This applies for ALL supplements for sale in the USA, like in your GNC stores and stuff, not just the products you see on Instagram. The more you know.
2. Waist Trainer
I truly blame the Kardashians for this trend. A waist trainer basically makes you sweat more in your midsection, which is great… but SWEAT IS NOT FAT. Sweat is water mixed with tiny amounts of ammonia, salt and sugar molecules. So just because you sweat more does not mean you’re losing fat. If sweating more motivates you to work harder (it happens), then by all means. Just know that that’s not fat that’s seeping out from your pores.

Now, I won’t lie…I do use a waist trainer, but not for the same reasons it’s being marketed for. I use a waist trainer as a back support for certain exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and certain abdominal exercises. If you want to use one, for whatever reason, I suggest using ones that do not have hard boning as that can restrict your movement and breathing.
3. Detox Tea
Good ol’ poop tea. That’s all that it is, and you could literally get it at an Asian supermarket for a fraction of the price. It’s called like, the Ballerina Dieter’s Tea or something like that, but I swear it’s been in Asian culture—or at least in MY Asian family’s culture—for ages. We whip it out whenever someone can’t, ya know, go.

So, yes, I use detox tea and I grew up around it (although the packaging was way less sexy)…BUT there’s something inherently very dangerous about people using laxative products to lose weight, because that’s actually a form of purging, so I advise caution. I think these teas are great for when you need them (aka when you are constipated), but do you REALLY need to detox everyday for 14 days as per most detox tea “instructions”? No, you don’t. I wouldn’t use them for 3 days straight, let alone 14. Using even a mild form of laxative for that long just cannot be good for your digestive system. At the end of the day, you want to still be able to go without any help, right? Don’t do it.
4. Appetite Suppressant Coffee Creamer
What a novel f*cking concept. So novel, in fact, I bought one at my local Gelson’s and I don’t even normally use creamer in my coffee (guess I was feeling spend-y that day). Remember when I talked about products that don’t make sense? This is one of them. So the creamer has ingredients such as hoodia and green tea extract that are in a lot of popular fat burner pills. The main ingredient is coconut oil, which is arguably better than your Coffee-Mate bullsh*t.

I stuck to the serving size which is a measly 2 teaspoons and the only difference it made was turn my coffee from black to a dark milky brown. I prefer my coffee black anyway, but there was literally no noticeable change in the taste of my coffee. I tried it three times and threw the bottle out, because it was useless. I mean, it barely made a change in my coffee so it’s definitely not doing anything for my body. Save your money, and learn to like your coffee without all the cream and sugar. All the caffeine without any of the crap.
5. Celery Juice
I swear, people are always trying to find a way to juice something. I can’t throw a bigger eye roll at this trend. This sh*t blew up on IG, and now EVERYONE is drinking neon green juice in the morning that is completely FIBERLESS and actually just like 90% water anyway. The dude who started off this trend is a health “guru” who is neither certified nor trained, btw, but claims to hear a voice that tells him about other people’s health status. He literally just started drinking the sh*t one day when he was 8 years old because he said a “voice” told him to. Is that who you want to take health advice from? Like, really?
There is absolutely no science backing celery juice as anything else but mostly water, because duh, celery is made up of mostly water. Unless you’re drinking this because you enjoy the taste (and let’s face it, you don’t), I suggest you stop juicing celery and start eating it whole because the fiber is the most valuable part of the celery. And PLEASE PEOPLE, stop trying to juice everything like you don’t have time to eat the actual fruit or vegetable. You’re not that busy, sweetie.

Two delicious seafood recipes you can find at Restaurant Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As part of Restaurant Week Fox 4 invites participants into Studio B to share some of the dishes they will feature for guests wanting to take part in the fun. On Tuesday, Jan. 16 Remy Ayesh, executive chef of Cafe Sebastienne, and Jesse Head, chef of Journey Steakhouse, shared two seafood recipes that are great on cold days.
More than 140 restaurants are participating in Restaurant Week this year.
Smoked Salmon Pate
Ingredients:
1 lb good quality smoked salmon, skinned & flaked 1 stalk celery, fine dice ¼ c fine dice fennel 1 shallot, diced and sweated 2 T roasted garlic paste* ¼ block softened cream cheese ¼ c Sour cream 1 T horseradish Chives & fennel fronds, chopped
Directions:
A splash of Green Chartreuse or Absinthe, squeeze of lemon juice, & salt to taste
Make sure to soften the cream cheese ahead of time, microwave works here. Combine all, season and adjust.
*Buy the pre-peeled garlic and confit in olive oil until soft. Blend and keep in fridge for any usage. Use the leftover oil for sautéing.
Chartreuse/Absinthe provides herbaceous notes that compliment this dish and it also serves to cut through the smoke and salt in the salmon. Serve with toast points and pickles as a spread or serve on toasted bread with side salad as a simple lunch.
Journey Steakhouse Signature Crab Bisque Recipe
Yield: 40 floz/ 1.5 quarts, approximately 4 large portions
Ingredients:
Crab Pieces: Knuckle and Bodies 1 LB Oil, Vegetable or Canola 1 Tablespoon Celery, Chopped 1 Stalks Carrot, Peeled and Chopped 0.5 Each Onion, White Chopped 0.5 Each Garlic, Fresh Minced 1 Cloves White Wine 0.25 Cup Red Wine 0.25 Cup Brandy or Sherry 0.25 Cup Water/Stock/Clam Juice 1 Quart Tomato Paste,#10 Can 0.33 Cup Paprika 0.5 Tablespoon Thyme, Dried 0.25 Teaspoon Thyme, Fresh 1 Sprigs Onion Powder 0.25 Teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning 1 Teaspoon Bay Leaves 2 Each Lemon Juice, Fresh Squeezed 1.5 Tablespoons Butter 0.5 stick Flour 0.33 Cup Heavy Cream 1 Pint Salt and White Pepper To Taste Crab Meat or Sour Cream Garnish
Directions:
1) Put oil in a large pot, and put over medium-low heat. Add Crab and crush pieces with mallet. 2) Add the garlic, carrots, celery, and onion and continue to cook until onions are translucent 3) Add both wines and brandy before browning. Add the tomato paste, paprika, dried thyme, fresh thyme, onion powder, Old Bay seasoning, bay leaves and lemon juice. Simmer together for up to one hour. 4) Make roux: In separate pan melt the butter and combine with flour, let cool to room temperature. 5) Slowly whisk roux into crab mixture, add until desired thickness is achieved, should coat the back of a spoon. 6) Stain through fine sieve, chinois. 7) Finish with cream. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper 8) Serve garnished with crab meat or sour cream.

This Stay-at-Home Dad Put Numbers to Work to Lose 110 Pounds
Meet John Jarrett, a 48-year-old stay-at-home dad in Springfield, Oregon. Pictured below with him is his primary project these days: his toddler, Gunner. But John is also an outdoorsman, grillmaster, a former machinist and a “Dr. Who” fanatic — all things that play to his analytical and number-driven mind. But this photo doesn’t reveal the number that really had John obsessed just one year ago: 300. He’s gone north of there on the scale on two separate occasions. This is his story, of beating that number and finding a healthier lifestyle, as told through his Instagram account.

Last March, John weighed in at 305 pounds for the second time in his life. The first time, in 2010, he did an 11-month program that helped him lose the weight and make changes to his lifestyle. But it didn’t take. “I settled down, got married and got lazy being a stay-at-home dad,” he admits. “I knew it was time to start over.”

John knew he had it in him. The first time, he found a good, balanced formula: “Eating clean, exercising properly and no crazy fads.” What he had to put aside was his love of barbecue. He’s professionally trained in the art of the grill and has three enormous Traeger grills on his patio, with beef brisket and pork shoulder in regular rotation. Moderating that wouldn’t be easy.

John had tried a number of different wearables and devices to help him track his food and exercise, but he didn’t like that most were incompatible. On a whim — and inspired by his casual acquaintance with Under Armour athlete Cameron Hanes, a fellow outdoorsman — he bought a pair of UA Geminis and began using the UA Record app. “I liked the way it was laid out in quadrants,” he explains. “It reminded me of the four food groups, and it was easy to understand.”
Good morning everyone. March 10th (6 months ago today) I decided I was tired of being overweight. I weighed a wonderful 304.5 lbs. Instead of a picture of a sweaty me after my morning walk I decided to post instead a screenshot of my UA Record. Right in the middle is this mornings weigh in. This has and will continue to be an amazing experience. I remember at the beginning making a smart ass comment that I could cut 100 lbs in 6 months. No trainers were used in these 6 months and no magic pills. It was all proper diet, low calorie intake, self control, daily doubles of high speed walking up and down Thurston Road and some obsessive desire to get healthy. It’s been fun and hard all at the same time. I still have a little more to cut and then I’ll start the maintenance phase and toning of myself. I need to thank my incredible wife Misty for putting up with this almost possessed journey but I want to be around a long time for her and our son Gunner. Like I’ve said in other posts about this journey that I’ve not used any magic super diet pills or crazy mystery shakes. Just diet, vitamins and healthy choices. Yes the first 3 weeks sucked but once I made it through that phase the rest was all goal oriented. The Under Armour products that I’ve been using have been one of the greatest discoveries I’ve ever made. From their shoes and clothing to the technology in the UA Health Box, they have been fantastic. Yes I jumped ship from our Oregon fitness shoe monster but their stuff didn’t fit me anymore and hurt me rather than helped. I still use their trackers but not their equipment anymore. The next pics I’ll post are when I hit my goal weight and I’ll show the change with clothes from the beginning and current clothing now. Going from 3XL to L is quite a change. The next step was changing his diet. He would eat a protein shake in the morning with a scoop of peanut butter powder and a banana on the side. For lunch, three sticks of celery with peanut butter, and more fruit. For dinner, he would eat a chicken salad. It wasn’t easy, but his motivation was simple: He wanted to stay healthy for his family — and be able to chase his son.
Lunch!! Why do I eat this way??? There’s a 2 1/2 year old sitting next to me I want to watch grow into a man, I have the most amazing wife I want to grow old with and I don’t want to end up in the hospital with problems, issues or diseases. Please do good for your body. I don’t like visiting hospitals where friends are. I want them to get better! If you want to change your eating habits and don’t know what to do please seek proper help. Next came exercise. He mapped out a 2.5-mile loop in his neighborhood that was mostly on flat ground and set out to walk every day. It wasn’t easy at first. “When I was 300 pounds, I was probably pushing 16–17 minutes per mile,” he admits.

But it got easier as he kept at it, and his diet improved. He increased his speed to a power walk and started throwing in hard jogs and even some sprints. He even wore out those Geminis. “It’s fun to power walk past a jogger now,” he laughs.

By maintaining his regimen and tracking everything through Record, MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun — his food intake, his steps, his exercise, even his sleep — he saw the pounds start coming off. As late fall rolled around, John was down more than 100 pounds and had gone from a size 3XL shirt to a large.
Good morning everyone. Forgot to make my 8 month progress posting yesterday. What a fantastic journey this is. I’m 111 lbs down from my start March 10th and couldn’t feel better!! The miles and miles walked and low calorie days have been crazy but I’m used to it and crave it now! The use of amazing fitness technology from Under Armour has been such a dream. From the Gemini shoes and My Fitness Pal to the fabulous Healthbox package with the Under Armour Record app. These are easy to use and fun pieces of tech that motivate and assist me. Like I’ve said in previous posts, I’m doing this without the help of gyms, trainers or box programs and supplements. My biggest support comes from my family and friends. My amazing wife Misty has put up with my obsessive fitness behavior and I thank her for support. To everyone that has beeped their horns and waved as I walk back and forth on Thurston Rd… thank you for your support too. I love the look on people’s faces that haven’t seen months when they realize just how much difference this program has made. Key to his success has been moderation — and some incredible discipline. John still grills constantly, but he doesn’t always partake. “I can have [beef] once a month, pulled pork maybe once or twice a month.” he says. “I don’t like the term ‘cheat,’ but you gotta have a little pleasure here and there.”

What John has yet to achieve is his goal weight of 190. He’s been stuck in the 193–198 range since the holidays, and he’s OK with that. “It’s been gray and rainy here, so no matter how hard I push, it’s not changing. If I push hard in cold weather, it’s going to hurt — joints, ligaments and muscles don’t want to work hard in cold weather.”
Yup… a bit chilly this morning. Felt like a neon bank robber in the face mask today. Tougher workout than yesterday due to the amount of ice. Be careful out there and remember, you can conquer the excuses for not doing right for your body. But he’s sticking with it, and believes “once April rolls around, I’ll hit my 190 in a heartbeat.” In the meantime, he can really enjoy his smaller frame. That includes being able to dress as his favorite “Dr. Who” character — War Doctor — at a local comic convention.

This Stay-at-Home Dad Put Numbers to Work to Lose 110 Pounds
Meet John Jarrett, a 48-year-old stay-at-home dad in Springfield, Oregon. Pictured below with him is his primary project these days: his toddler, Gunner. But John is also an outdoorsman, grillmaster, a former machinist and a “Dr. Who” fanatic — all things that play to his analytical and number-driven mind. But this photo doesn’t reveal the number that really had John obsessed just one year ago: 300. He’s gone north of there on the scale on two separate occasions. This is his story, of beating that number and finding a healthier lifestyle, as told through his Instagram account.

Last March, John weighed in at 305 pounds for the second time in his life. The first time, in 2010, he did an 11-month program that helped him lose the weight and make changes to his lifestyle. But it didn’t take. “I settled down, got married and got lazy being a stay-at-home dad,” he admits. “I knew it was time to start over.”

John knew he had it in him. The first time, he found a good, balanced formula: “Eating clean, exercising properly and no crazy fads.” What he had to put aside was his love of barbecue. He’s professionally trained in the art of the grill and has three enormous Traeger grills on his patio, with beef brisket and pork shoulder in regular rotation. Moderating that wouldn’t be easy.

John had tried a number of different wearables and devices to help him track his food and exercise, but he didn’t like that most were incompatible. On a whim — and inspired by his casual acquaintance with Under Armour athlete Cameron Hanes, a fellow outdoorsman — he bought a pair of UA Geminis and began using the UA Record app. “I liked the way it was laid out in quadrants,” he explains. “It reminded me of the four food groups, and it was easy to understand.”
Good morning everyone. March 10th (6 months ago today) I decided I was tired of being overweight. I weighed a wonderful 304.5 lbs. Instead of a picture of a sweaty me after my morning walk I decided to post instead a screenshot of my UA Record. Right in the middle is this mornings weigh in. This has and will continue to be an amazing experience. I remember at the beginning making a smart ass comment that I could cut 100 lbs in 6 months. No trainers were used in these 6 months and no magic pills. It was all proper diet, low calorie intake, self control, daily doubles of high speed walking up and down Thurston Road and some obsessive desire to get healthy. It’s been fun and hard all at the same time. I still have a little more to cut and then I’ll start the maintenance phase and toning of myself. I need to thank my incredible wife Misty for putting up with this almost possessed journey but I want to be around a long time for her and our son Gunner. Like I’ve said in other posts about this journey that I’ve not used any magic super diet pills or crazy mystery shakes. Just diet, vitamins and healthy choices. Yes the first 3 weeks sucked but once I made it through that phase the rest was all goal oriented. The Under Armour products that I’ve been using have been one of the greatest discoveries I’ve ever made. From their shoes and clothing to the technology in the UA Health Box, they have been fantastic. Yes I jumped ship from our Oregon fitness shoe monster but their stuff didn’t fit me anymore and hurt me rather than helped. I still use their trackers but not their equipment anymore. The next pics I’ll post are when I hit my goal weight and I’ll show the change with clothes from the beginning and current clothing now. Going from 3XL to L is quite a change. The next step was changing his diet. He would eat a protein shake in the morning with a scoop of peanut butter powder and a banana on the side. For lunch, three sticks of celery with peanut butter, and more fruit. For dinner, he would eat a chicken salad. It wasn’t easy, but his motivation was simple: He wanted to stay healthy for his family — and be able to chase his son.
Lunch!! Why do I eat this way??? There’s a 2 1/2 year old sitting next to me I want to watch grow into a man, I have the most amazing wife I want to grow old with and I don’t want to end up in the hospital with problems, issues or diseases. Please do good for your body. I don’t like visiting hospitals where friends are. I want them to get better! If you want to change your eating habits and don’t know what to do please seek proper help. Next came exercise. He mapped out a 2.5-mile loop in his neighborhood that was mostly on flat ground and set out to walk every day. It wasn’t easy at first. “When I was 300 pounds, I was probably pushing 16–17 minutes per mile,” he admits.

But it got easier as he kept at it, and his diet improved. He increased his speed to a power walk and started throwing in hard jogs and even some sprints. He even wore out those Geminis. “It’s fun to power walk past a jogger now,” he laughs.

By maintaining his regimen and tracking everything through Record, MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun — his food intake, his steps, his exercise, even his sleep — he saw the pounds start coming off. As late fall rolled around, John was down more than 100 pounds and had gone from a size 3XL shirt to a large.
Good morning everyone. Forgot to make my 8 month progress posting yesterday. What a fantastic journey this is. I’m 111 lbs down from my start March 10th and couldn’t feel better!! The miles and miles walked and low calorie days have been crazy but I’m used to it and crave it now! The use of amazing fitness technology from Under Armour has been such a dream. From the Gemini shoes and My Fitness Pal to the fabulous Healthbox package with the Under Armour Record app. These are easy to use and fun pieces of tech that motivate and assist me. Like I’ve said in previous posts, I’m doing this without the help of gyms, trainers or box programs and supplements. My biggest support comes from my family and friends. My amazing wife Misty has put up with my obsessive fitness behavior and I thank her for support. Key to his success has been moderation — and some incredible discipline. John still grills constantly, but he doesn’t always partake. “I can have [beef] once a month, pulled pork maybe once or twice a month.” he says. “I don’t like the term ‘cheat,’ but you gotta have a little pleasure here and there.”

What John has yet to achieve is his goal weight of 190. He’s been stuck in the 193–198 range since the holidays, and he’s OK with that. “It’s been gray and rainy here, so no matter how hard I push, it’s not changing. If I push hard in cold weather, it’s going to hurt — joints, ligaments and muscles don’t want to work hard in cold weather.”
Yup… a bit chilly this morning. Felt like a neon bank robber in the face mask today. Tougher workout than yesterday due to the amount of ice. Be careful out there and remember, you can conquer the excuses for not doing right for your body. The Under Armour products that I’ve been using have been one of the greatest discoveries I’ve ever made. From their shoes and clothing to the technology in the UA Health Box, they have been fantastic. Yes I jumped ship from our Oregon fitness shoe monster but their stuff didn’t fit me anymore and hurt me rather than helped. I still use their trackers but not their equipment anymore. The next pics I’ll post are when I hit my goal weight and I’ll show the change with clothes from the beginning and current clothing now. Going from 3XL to L is quite a change. The next step was changing his diet. He would eat a protein shake in the morning with a scoop of peanut butter powder and a banana on the side. For lunch, three sticks of celery with peanut butter, and more fruit. For dinner, he would eat a chicken salad. It wasn’t easy, but his motivation was simple: He wanted to stay healthy for his family — and be able to chase his son.
Lunch!! Why do I eat this way??? There’s a 2 1/2 year old sitting next to me I want to watch grow into a man, I have the most amazing wife I want to grow old with and I don’t want to end up in the hospital with problems, issues or diseases. Please do good for your body. I don’t like visiting hospitals where friends are. I want them to get better! If you want to change your eating habits and don’t know what to do please seek proper help. Next came exercise. He mapped out a 2.5-mile loop in his neighborhood that was mostly on flat ground and set out to walk every day. It wasn’t easy at first. “When I was 300 pounds, I was probably pushing 16–17 minutes per mile,” he admits.

But it got easier as he kept at it, and his diet improved. He increased his speed to a power walk and started throwing in hard jogs and even some sprints. He even wore out those Geminis. “It’s fun to power walk past a jogger now,” he laughs.

By maintaining his regimen and tracking everything through Record, MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun — his food intake, his steps, his exercise, even his sleep — he saw the pounds start coming off. As late fall rolled around, John was down more than 100 pounds and had gone from a size 3XL shirt to a large.
Good morning everyone. Forgot to make my 8 month progress posting yesterday. What a fantastic journey this is. I’m 111 lbs down from my start March 10th and couldn’t feel better!! The miles and miles walked and low calorie days have been crazy but I’m used to it and crave it now! The use of amazing fitness technology from Under Armour has been such a dream. From the Gemini shoes and My Fitness Pal to the fabulous Healthbox package with the Under Armour Record app. These are easy to use and fun pieces of tech that motivate and assist me. Like I’ve said in previous posts, I’m doing this without the help of gyms, trainers or box programs and supplements. My biggest support comes from my family and friends. My amazing wife Misty has put up with my obsessive fitness behavior and I thank her for support. To everyone that has beeped their horns and waved as I walk back and forth on Thurston Rd… thank you for your support too. I love the look on people’s faces that haven’t seen months when they realize just how much difference this program has made. I hope I can motivate at least a couple people to do something good for themselves and make their life healthier. Key to his success has been moderation — and some incredible discipline. John still grills constantly, but he doesn’t always partake. “I can have [beef] once a month, pulled pork maybe once or twice a month.” he says. “I don’t like the term ‘cheat,’ but you gotta have a little pleasure here and there.”

What John has yet to achieve is his goal weight of 190. He’s been stuck in the 193–198 range since the holidays, and he’s OK with that. “It’s been gray and rainy here, so no matter how hard I push, it’s not changing. If I push hard in cold weather, it’s going to hurt — joints, ligaments and muscles don’t want to work hard in cold weather.”
Yup… a bit chilly this morning. Felt like a neon bank robber in the face mask today. Tougher workout than yesterday due to the amount of ice. Be careful out there and remember, you can conquer the excuses for not doing right for your body. But he’s sticking with it, and believes “once April rolls around, I’ll hit my 190 in a heartbeat.” In the meantime, he can really enjoy his smaller frame. That includes being able to dress as his favorite “Dr. Who” character — War Doctor — at a local comic convention.

This Stay-at-Home Dad Put Numbers to Work to Lose 110 Pounds
Meet John Jarrett, a 48-year-old stay-at-home dad in Springfield, Oregon. Pictured below with him is his primary project these days: his toddler, Gunner. But John is also an outdoorsman, grillmaster, a former machinist and a “Dr. Who” fanatic — all things that play to his analytical and number-driven mind. But this photo doesn’t reveal the number that really had John obsessed just one year ago: 300. He’s gone north of there on the scale on two separate occasions. This is his story, of beating that number and finding a healthier lifestyle, as told through his Instagram account.

Last March, John weighed in at 305 pounds for the second time in his life. The first time, in 2010, he did an 11-month program that helped him lose the weight and make changes to his lifestyle. But it didn’t take. “I settled down, got married and got lazy being a stay-at-home dad,” he admits. “I knew it was time to start over.”

John knew he had it in him. The first time, he found a good, balanced formula: “Eating clean, exercising properly and no crazy fads.” What he had to put aside was his love of barbecue. He’s professionally trained in the art of the grill and has three enormous Traeger grills on his patio, with beef brisket and pork shoulder in regular rotation. Moderating that wouldn’t be easy.

John had tried a number of different wearables and devices to help him track his food and exercise, but he didn’t like that most were incompatible. On a whim — and inspired by his casual acquaintance with Under Armour athlete Cameron Hanes, a fellow outdoorsman — he bought a pair of UA Geminis and began using the UA Record app. “I liked the way it was laid out in quadrants,” he explains. “It reminded me of the four food groups, and it was easy to understand.”
Good morning everyone. March 10th (6 months ago today) I decided I was tired of being overweight. I weighed a wonderful 304.5 lbs. Instead of a picture of a sweaty me after my morning walk I decided to post instead a screenshot of my UA Record. Right in the middle is this mornings weigh in. This has and will continue to be an amazing experience. I remember at the beginning making a smart ass comment that I could cut 100 lbs in 6 months. No trainers were used in these 6 months and no magic pills. It was all proper diet, low calorie intake, self control, daily doubles of high speed walking up and down Thurston Road and some obsessive desire to get healthy. It’s been fun and hard all at the same time. I still have a little more to cut and then I’ll start the maintenance phase and toning of myself. I need to thank my incredible wife Misty for putting up with this almost possessed journey but I want to be around a long time for her and our son Gunner. Like I’ve said in other posts about this journey that I’ve not used any magic super diet pills or crazy mystery shakes. Just diet, vitamins and healthy choices. Yes the first 3 weeks sucked but once I made it through that phase the rest was all goal oriented. Jan 15th - You got this
Deciding tonight that I’d reanimate that blog I half heartedly started a year ago, I scoured the fridge for the plan for tomorrow’s lunch. It was looking a bit bare and uninspiring. Buuuut, I’ve been spending an eye watering amount on lunches at work in the last few years - I don’t want to admit how much- it’s shameful actually. Part and parcel of needing to escape the office with a similar minded colleague and engaging in a large glass of pinot every lunchtime - regardless, both my liver and my purse are screaming out that it needs to stop. Well with as much frequency anyway.
Today the other half and I went out for lunch <his name’s flinn by the way, he’ll feature pretty heavily in this blog - he’s usually the voice of reason, tempering my haste and adding an insightful bit of creativity - I bring the spreadsheets and preposterous planning to the party, who said I wasn’t fun?>. We trotted off to Holloway to try some hand pulled noodles in a newly opened chinese caf (can you call it a caf if it serves ginger) that featured in the guardian a few weeks ago and whose sister place we visited in New York a few years ago. A pork bun, some delicious noodle broth and a can of coke later, we left, the satiated left wingers only guardian readers can claim to be, bumbling down the road, rubbing our extended bellies, admiring the arsenal statium and bigging up Jeremy Corbyn between steps.
Anyhow, I digress. The fridge was bare. I’ll learn in the coming months to realise that the sight that befell me, was fare from empty. Coupla carrots, some celery, half a courgette, some red onions, half a savoy cabbage and a bag of baby tatties amongst other joys.
‘There’s cous cous in the cupboard’. Yup that’s Finn. Bloody Flinn, Ever the optimist. I admit, I was only a few hours in and standing at that barren fridge door, I started to doubt myself, slowlu losing my resolve at the speed the veg was startting to turn. But, I remind myself it’s 2017, and there will be no more £30 pinot grigio and standard pub fare lunches (sob) - I GOT THIS.
15 mins chopping some carrots (3), red onion (2), half a swede, half a courgette, garlic (2 of dem lobe things) and a sprinkling of chilli powder, cumin powder, salt, olive oil and honey. Shoved it in the oven for an hour and sat and wrote this, indulged myself with a beer (it’s sunday, ok) and contemplated how much of a better human I am now for planning a lunch. Added it to some cous cous, - it looks alright. I’ll probably miss the pinot grigio tomorrow but not the shit slug and lettuce burger that’d usually accompany it.
