The Horned Serpent
So before I get started on this one, I have a couple of things to get out of the way. First, I will be using she/her pronouns for the Horned Serpent; this is just because UPG and because I'm used to it. I know someone else who venerates/worships the Horned Serpent, uses they/them pronouns for them, and considers them to be beyond gender / present as whatever gender they feel like. Second, I will be focusing on my interpretation of her on the Gundestrup Cauldron, in part because there's really not a lot of literature on her, even when you include works that specifically analyze Cernunnos' depictions. Third (and related), I will be using the National Museum of Denmark's estimate as to when/where the Gundestrup Cauldron was made, which is roughly in the Danubian or Wallachian Plain(s) around 150 BCE to 1 CE (link).
So first a little historical & cultural context. This area, as far as culture groups, would have been a heck of a melting pot, between the Dacians and Thracians that already lived there, the Scythians coming in and also living near by, the Gauls that moved in around the 300s-200s, the Greeks who came up and started establishing colonies along the Black Sea in the 300s, and the Romans, encroaching on everyone's business around the time the Cauldron was built. A pretty solid primer on the history of the region is A Companion to Ancient Thrace, published by Wiley Blackwell.
So I'm gonna try to make sense but it might be a little disorganized going forward. Anyway, onto the actual thoughts & stuff. So anyone who's taken even a passing glance at Cernunnos is well aware of the Horned Serpent, since she is present in basically every ancient art you can find with him. On the Gundestrup Cauldron, she appears three times, all on the interior panels. One is at the Hero's heel, who's holding the wheel; a second is at the end of a line of heroic riders, which seems to be a Thracian horseman motif; and of course the famous Cernunnos panel. In Thracian Tales of the Gundestrup Cauldron, published by Najade Press, Jan Best presents an interpretation of the interior panels as a story, and assumes that Cernunnos is singing in his famous panel, specifically about the secrets of immortality, a concept which was very popular at the time. I agree with this and I also assume that the depiction of Taranis / the wheel god is that he is also singing, and if he is singing then the lions and griffins - both predators associated with kingship (griffins were protectors of the pharaoh, and also decorated certain tombs out in ancient Persia), then the action of passing off the Wheel must have symbolic meaning, such as being handed the Wheel of Heaven.
The Gundestrup Cauldron's exterior also has very clear influence from the Scythians, you can almost 1:1 map the gods based on Herodotus's retelling of the Pontic stories. I believe there are also thematic parallels going on here on the Wheel God panel, featuring a new god/king being given the symbol of his domain. Wikipedia actually has some relatively thorough articles on Scythian religion as well as the genealogical myth specifically, which is the myth that I personally associate with the wheel-giving panel. As well, the animals in this panel don't appear to be particularly concerned with attacking anyone - if anything, the griffins and lionesses are slightly tilted from one to the next, which makes me think it's more likely that they are dancing, especially if the human/divine subjects are singing, especially if the human with the helmet is receiving a high honor, potentially his rank amongst the gods. In this panel, she is just at the hero's feet, not really joining the parade if the animals, but clearly not ready to attack either, but her attention does seem to be drawn towards the hero.
The final panel she is on is the panel featuring the nine soldiers and the heroized dead, represented by the "Thracian horseman" motif. After Alexander the Great and his penchant for having statues of himself be on horseback, it became popular for wealthy men and nobles to depict themselves riding horseback to a goddess or sacred tree (unfortunately my best source discussing this in English is also not great and he comes up with some..... questionable theories), but the popularity seems to have blown up to the point where even deities such as Zeus were depicted on horseback in a similar manner. There are also mentions in a few other sources that the Thracians believed in the ability for people to essentially become immortal after death. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble sorting out my notes and this essay has been nagging me for weeks now.
Anyway, I interpret this panel as what is expected to happen to us after we die - the "ordinary", so to speak, are lead to a deity, likely to be reincarnated (this is honestly just a guess on my part largely due to the popularity of that in Greece for ever, and Grecian influence was in full swing by the time the Cauldron was made), meanwhile the "extraordinary" are lead by the Horned Serpent.
This is where I tie all three together to my upg/theology: The Horned Serpent is a friend and ally to Cernunnos. He teaches the secrets of life after death to those who will listen. The Horned Serpent is by his side during his teaching, and when we die, if we have proven ourselves worthy during life, she guides us through the trials of the afterlife. If we succeed in these trials, we are awarded with apotheosis - becoming a god or godlike - and she stands by our side as we earn this prize.
@musingmelsuinesmelancholy sorry it took me so long x.x & I hope this makes sense!

Listen to a recorded document of the conceptual exhibition 'Art by Telephone' at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969.
Transcription excerpt: Artist unknown.
Inspired in part by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's “telephone pictures” (for which the artist dictated his design for works over the phone to a fabricator, emphasizing the fact that an intellectual approach to the creation of art was not inferior to an emotional approach), Art by Telephonewas an extremely influential conceptually driven exhibition in the MCA's early history. Occurring at a time when the art world was moving away from minimalism and in a more conceptual direction, Art by Telephone asked artists from the United States and Europe to communicate their ideas for artworks over the telephone to MCA curator David H. Katzive. MCA staff then executed the works based on the artists' oral instructions, avoiding all blueprints and written plans. After six weeks, all of the works exhibited in Art by Telephonewere either destroyed or disposed of by the museum.
Some of the artists involved, such as Richard Hamilton and Wolf Vostell, approached the project with a more literal interpretation of the thematic. Vostell mailed a calendar of changing phone numbers from Germany. Visitors dialed the numbers to receive instructions for one-minute happenings. A Sol LeWitt wall drawing was produced with the help of assistants, and Robert Smithson constructed a varied version of his “non-site,” asking that a pile of cement be poured down a steep hill and then photographed for display in the galleries.
The exhibition included installations that relied heavily on audience participation, such as Arman's famous trashcans. The artist asked people to contribute their own waste to the enclosed Plexiglas area. Once it was filled to the brim, the work was considered complete.
Others, such as William Wegman's Third Day, embraced natural occurrences. Third Dayconsisted of a trough, built in the shape of the letters spelling out “third day,” that was filled with water and covered with vermiculite. The water evaporated in three days, exposing the words engraved on the floor.
The exhibition was dedicated to Marcel Duchamp and John Cage, who declined to participate. However, most if not all artists who did accept the museum’s invitation, were influenced by one or both in some way, accepting the idea of process and experience over finished object.
Artists exhibited in Art by Telephone included: Siah Armajani, Arman, Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Iain Baxter, Mel Bochner, George Brecht, Jack Burnham, James Lee Byars, Robert H. Cumming, Francois Dallegret, Jan Dibbets, John Giorno, Robert Grosvenor, Hans Haacke, Richard Hamilton, Dick Higgins, Davi Det Hompson, Robert Huot, Alain Jacquet, Ed Keinholz, Joseph Kosuth, Les Levine, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Guenther Uecker, Stan VanDerBeek, Bernar Venet, Frank Lincoln Viner, Wolf Vostell, William Wegman, and William T. JP appeal with jury — collision: Benson, Medrano, Jasso, Sandra Ellis...
Former Dallas County JP booted from county commissioner meeting
Former Dallas County Justice of the Peace Luis Sepulveda was forcibly removed from the county commission meeting Tuesday morning by sheriff's deputies after he refused instructions to sit down during public comments.
Sepulveda, shown here on the left talking to the media after his ejection, was told by County Judge Clay Jenkins that he was not signed up to speak.
Sepulveda disputed that, saying he asked to be placed on the agenda before the Monday afternoon deadline.
Sepulveda then ignored Jenkins' instructions to sit down.
His removal caused a temporary disruption as deputies led him out while he shouted, "You're hurting me!" and "I'm disabled!" and "Is this how you're going to treat the judges?"
Jenkins later called it a "publicity stunt."
Sepulveda and his supporters were at the meeting to ask the commissioners to appoint him to his old JP position in Precinct 5, which he lost in the 2010 Democratic primary to Carlos Medrano.
Medrano was suspended as justice the peace last year after being indicted on a felony charge related to the election.
In February, he was convicted of illegally soliciting the vote of his niece. more
However, because Medrano is appealing that conviction, there is no official vacancy on the bench, Jenkins said.
If the conviction is upheld, Medrano will be removed from office, he said.
About two months ago, Jenkins and the commissioners assigned a Republican justice of the peace, Sandra Ellis, to the Precinct 5 position in Oak Cliff -- deep in Democratic territory.
Ellis lost her precinct in Richardson this year during county redistricting.
Jenkins, a Democrat, said it made sense to have her fill in at Precinct 5 because she was re-elected in 2010 and the county has to pay her salary until 2014.
Jenkins said appointing Sepulveda to the position would have cost the county an extra $106,000 while taxpayers would be paying Ellis to sit at home.
He said he's received no complaints about her during the two months she's been on the bench.
At least four people were signed up to speak Tuesday about the justice of the peace issue.
The first was Micah Phillips, who is running against Commissioner John Wiley Price in the May 29 Democratic primary.
Sepulveda stood behind Phillips as he told the commissioners they made the wrong decision in assigning Ellis to the bench.
"We have a chance to right an injustice," Phillips said.
"A lot of the citizens are losing hope."
When Phillips was done, Sepulveda asked to be allowed to speak.
But Jenkins said he was not on the speakers list and could not.
Commissioner Maurine Dickey, a Republican, asked to let him speak.
But Jenkins said he could only do so if there was unanimous approval on the court.
When Sepulveda wouldn't leave the podium, county security officers and sheriff's deputies quickly approached.
As he was led out, Sepulveda said one of the deputies was twisting his right wrist, causing pain.
Outside the building, Phillips and Sepulveda blasted Jenkins and the commissioners for how they handled the situation.
"This commissioners court has completely lost touch with the community," Sepulveda said.
"If that's how they treat a judge, imagine how they'll treat citizens."
Phillips described it as a "mafia-style" of governance and then criticized Price, calling him a "bully."
"When he does not get his way, he wants to hurt you," Phillips said.
Jenkins said Sepulveda did not follow the rules for signing up to speak, which require people to call before 4 p.m. on the Monday before the meeting to ask to be placed on the list.
Sepulveda said he called the county on Thursday with a request to speak.
Appeals Court decision upholding Carlos Medrano's illegal voting conviction shows his niece's uncommon courage. Jan. 28, 2014
Carlos Medrano's plan to get elected justice of the peace in Dallas involved getting lots of votes from friends and family.
It worked.
Medrano beat the incumbent Luis Sepulveda by a handful of votes.
It worked, that is, until Carlos' niece, Veronica Medrano, decided that the truth was more important than family loyalty.
Yesterday, the 5th District Court of Appeals upheld Carlos' 2012 conviction on a charge of illegal voting.
The 27-page opinion not only dashes all of Carlos' arguments that his conviction was unjust, it shows once more just how courageous Veronica was.
Her father, her sister, her aunt, her great uncle and other family members pressured the young woman, a college student at the time, to lie and dissemble about how she voted in a Dallas JP election despite living in Mesquite.
The evidence at trial showed that Carlos convinced her to register to vote at her Uncle Rolando's home on Douglas Avenue in Dallas.
He even took her to the polling place to cast her ballot.
She testified she never lived in Dallas with her uncle and never intended to.
Her sister Raquel sent out a Facebook message to a cousin saying Veronica "has completely gone against us."
The message went on to detail exactly how the scheme was supposed to work.
"When Carlos was running for the election he had asked Veronica and I to change our address currently to say that we lived with [Rolando Medrano] so we could vote for him," the message read.
Only one family member, a cousin named Robert Medrano, joined Veronica in testifying for the prosecution.
He told how the family called Veronica "Fredo" in reference to the weak, betraying brother of the Godfather films.
Robert also testified that Carlos urged him to make sure the family stuck together against the charges.
If everyone had only agreed to join in the lie, the whole problem might have just gone away.
But Veronica made another choice.
She faced alienation from her family and the loss of her relationships with the people closest to her.
Despite that terrible consequence, she chose the truth.
It was the sort of courage that even those of us who are older and more experienced might learn from.

So you need good construction foreman, managing the less sophisticated.... 🤔 🙄 so when they lay asphalt, they need to adjust for atmospheric conditions. And i'm talking not only the air but the surface as well....
To ensure proper contraction of asphalt when laid, the key is to adjust its temperature to match the ambient environmental temperature, meaning the asphalt should be at a temperature that is not too hot relative to the surrounding air and ground temperature, allowing it to cool and contract appropriately once placed, preventing potential cracks and distortions due to excessive expansion or contraction in changing weather conditions.
Key points to remember:
Ideal temperature range:
Most paving experts recommend laying asphalt when the ambient temperature is between 50°F and 90°F to achieve optimal contraction and compaction.
Monitoring ground temperature:
It's crucial to check the ground temperature beneath where the asphalt will be laid, as it can be significantly cooler than the air temperature, potentially impacting the cooling process of the asphalt.
Cooling before application:
If the asphalt is too hot when applied, it can cool too quickly, leading to improper bonding and potential issues.
Impact of weather conditions:
Factors like wind can accelerate the cooling of asphalt, so consider wind speed when determining the ideal application temperature.
Potential problems if temperature is not adjusted correctly:
Cracking:
If asphalt cools too quickly due to a large temperature difference between the asphalt and the environment, it can contract rapidly, causing cracks to form.
Poor compaction:
If the asphalt is too cold, it can become too stiff to properly compact, leading to a weak pavement.
raveling:
In extreme cases, asphalt that is too cold or not properly compacted can start to crumble and deteriorate.

Air Voids (Va)
The allowable percentage of air voids (in laboratory specimens) is between 2.0 percent and 4.0 percent for most surface course mixes or as required by the owner. The durability of an asphalt pavement is a function of the air-void content.

When choosing gravel for an asphalt mix, you can consider factors such as:
Size
Gravel that's 3/8–3/4 in diameter is a good balance between stability and drainage. Gravel that's ¼–1 in is also good for driveways because it clumps together well and drains well.
Material
More durable materials like crushed stone are better for high-traffic areas. Pea gravel is more visually appealing for lower traffic areas, but it may not be suitable for sloped areas.
Top layer
For the top layer of a driveway, choose gravel that's described as "traffic bound" or "dense-grade". This type of gravel contains "fines" that form a cement-like bond when compacted by heavy machinery.
Drainage
Ensure the driveway has adequate drainage to avoid water build-up.Materials like river rock can help with water flow because of their varied sizes and shapes.
Maintenance
Consider the long-term maintenance costs of the gravel. Some materials may be economical at first, but have higher upkeep expenses.
Recycled materials
Recycled asphalt millings are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gravel. They're cost-effective, conserve natural resources, and become stronger and harder over time.

To achieve the right tar consistency for your gravel mix before applying asphalt, the tar (asphalt binder) should be fluid enough to properly coat each gravel particle, creating a sticky, "soupy" consistency that allows the aggregate to be evenly distributed and adhere well when the asphalt is applied on top; essentially, a thick liquid that can spread smoothly across the gravel surface while still having enough body to bind the stones together.
Key points to consider:
Grade of asphalt:
Choose the correct asphalt grade based on your climate and traffic conditions.
Temperature:
The asphalt needs to be heated to the proper temperature to achieve the right viscosity.
Application method:
Depending on your project, you might need to spray the asphalt on the gravel or mix it directly with the gravel.
How to check consistency:
Visual inspection:
The asphalt should appear like a thick, smooth liquid that flows easily but doesn't drip excessively.
Spoon test:
Scoop a small amount of asphalt with a spoon and observe how it flows off; it should slowly slide off the spoon without breaking apart.
Important factors to remember:
Gravel size:
The size of your gravel will impact how much asphalt is needed to properly coat each particle.
Compaction:
After applying the asphalt, properly compact the gravel base to ensure a strong and even surface for the asphalt layer.
