The Bakharwal dog is an ancient livestock guardian dog breed originating from northern India, now found throughout India and Pakistan. It is considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds in India.
A recent study indicates this breed may be on the brink of extinction due to a mix of crossbreeding, rabies cases and being killed in relation to the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. Researchers believe that these may be amongst the oldest herding dogs having origins in Central Asia. They are bred by nomadic groups as a livestock guardian dog and settlement protector.
Bakarwal is divided into two categories, general Bakarwal and Ladakhi Bakarwal. Bakarwal is a powerful, heavy bone, medium to large size dog. It is an agile and a sturdy breed, a typical mountain dog with a furry coat and plumy tail that gives it a majestic look. It looks like a medium version of Tibetan Mastiff. Common colours are black and tan, red, fawn, pied, sable, white and brindle.
The Bakharwal Dog, along with the Gaddi Kutta, is particularly used for guarding sheep, protecting farms and homes in Himachal Pradesh as well as in Jammu and Kashmir. It is also used by the Indian Police.

Jammu and Kashmir: Clock tower lit up after abrogation of Article 370
The clock tower you are referring to is likely the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) located in the city center of Lal Chowk in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lighting up of the Ghanta Ghar after the abrogation of Article 370 holds political and symbolic significance.
Article 370 was a provision in the Indian Constitution that granted special autonomous status to the region of Jammu and Kashmir. It gave the state a significant degree of autonomy, allowing it to have its own constitution, flag, and considerable control over its internal affairs. On August 5, 2019, the Indian government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revoked Article 370 and bifurcated the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The decision to revoke Article 370 was highly controversial and had significant implications for the region. Supporters of the move argued that it would lead to greater integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, promote economic development, and improve governance. However, critics expressed concerns about the impact on the region's autonomy, its special status, and the potential for unrest.
The lighting up of the Ghanta Ghar in Srinagar after the abrogation of Article 370 can be seen as a symbolic gesture by the Indian government to showcase the integration of Jammu and Kashmir into the broader Indian nation. It's a way to mark the change and signify a new era for the region. The act of lighting up a prominent landmark can also be interpreted as a message of unity and development.
However, it's important to note that the lighting up of the Ghanta Ghar would also have been met with mixed reactions from the local population. For some, it might have symbolized a positive step towards development and unity. For others, especially those who were opposed to the revocation of Article 370, it might have been seen as a reminder of the changes imposed upon the region against their wishes.
In any case, the lighting up of the Ghanta Ghar serves as a visual representation of the complex and multi-faceted dynamics surrounding the revocation of Article 370 and its implications for Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Blue Star
OPERATION BLUE STAR was an Indian Military activity somewhere in the range of 1 and 10 June 1984 to eliminate Damdami Taksal pioneer Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his supporters from the structures of the Brilliant Sanctuary, the holiest site of Sikhism, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The choice to send off the activity rested with the State leader of India, then Indira Gandhi, who had previously approved military groundwork for a showdown at the sanctuary complex a year and a half earlier as indicated by the then-Bad habit Head of the Military Staff, S. K. Sinha. In July 1982, Harchand Singh Longowal, the leader of the Sikh ideological group Shiromani Akali Dal, had welcomed Bhindranwale to move to the Brilliant Sanctuary to sidestep capture by government authorities.: 332
Indian knowledge organizations had revealed that three unmistakable Sikh figures â Shabeg Singh, Balbir Singh and Amrik Singh, alluded to in reports as "noticeable tops of the Khalistan development" â had each made somewhere around six excursions to adjoining Pakistan somewhere in the range of 1981 and 1983. Shabeg Singh, an Indian Armed force official who later abandoned to join Bhindranwale, was recognized as the supplier of weapons preparing at Akal Takht. The Insight Agency asserted that preparation was being given at different gurdwaras all through Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Amrik Singh answered these claims by expressing that understudy instructional courses with "customary weapons" had existed for a long time at these locations.[26] The KGB knowledge organization of the Soviet Association had warned India's Exploration and Examination Wing (R&AW) about a joint activity between Pakistan's Between Administrations Insight (ISI) and the US's Focal Knowledge Office (CIA) to mix nonconformist turmoil in the Indian territory of Punjab. Bogus cases were likewise made that R&AW had gotten knowledge by examining a Pakistani warrior that more than 1,000 Exceptional Help Gathering commandos of the Pakistan Armed force had been dispatched by the Pakistani government into Indian Punjab to help Bhindranwale in his battle against the Indian government; nonetheless, no indications of commandos were found and no confirmations were given by R&AW. SEE OUR HOME PAGEÂ Â
In 1981, the Soviets sent off operation Kontakt, which depended on a manufactured report implying to contain subtleties of the weapons and cash given by the ISI to Sikh assailants who needed to make a free country. In November 1982, Yuri Andropov, the Overall Secretary of the Socialist Faction and head of the Soviet Association, endorsed a proposition to create Pakistani knowledge records enumerating ISI intended to instigate strict unsettling influences in Punjab and advance the production of Khalistan as an autonomous Sikh state. Indira Gandhi's choice to move troops into the Punjab depended on her treating in a serious way the data given by the Soviets in regards to secret CIA support for the Sikhs.
Paving the way to operation Blue star, there were a few fights by Sangh Parivar, including a walk drove by LK Advani and Stomach muscle Vajpayee of the Bharatiya Janata Party to challenge the absence of government activity and to request that the Indian Armed force be sent into the Brilliant Temple.
On 1 June 1984, after exchanges with the assailants fizzled, Indira Gandhi dismissed the Anandpur Goal and requested the military to send off operation Blue Star, all the while going after scores of Sikh sanctuaries across Punjab. Indian security forces started operation Blue Star when they terminated into different structures, which brought about the deaths of eight civilians. Various armed force units and paramilitary powers encompassed the Brilliant Sanctuary complex on 3 June 1984. The authority position of the military was that alerts were made to work with the departure of explorers yet that no acquiescence happened by June 5 at 7:00 pm. In any case, in April 2017 the Amritsar Locale and Meetings Judge Gurbir Singh gave a decision which expressed that there was no proof that the Indian armed force gave admonitions to pioneers to leave the sanctuary complex prior to beginning their assault. The military's attack on the sanctuary complex finished on June 8. A wiping up activity, Woodrose, was then started all through Punjab. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
The military had misjudged the capability moved by the aggressors, whose combat hardware included Chinese-made rocket-pushed projectile launchers and ammo with protection penetrating capacities. Tanks and weighty cannons were utilized to go after the aggressors, who answered with hostility to tank and assault rifle shoot from the vigorously sustained Akal Takht. Following a 24-hour firefight, the military dealt with the sanctuary complex. The authority setback figures for the military were 83 dead and 249 harmed. The officially sanctioned white paper expressed that 1,592 assailants were secured and there were 554 joint assailant and regular citizen casualties, much lower than free estimates. As indicated by the public authority, high non military personnel setbacks were credited to aggressors utilizing explorers caught inside the sanctuary as human shields. Notwithstanding, the Indian armed forces had permitted many pioneers and protestors to enter the sanctuary complex on 3 June 1984 and kept them from leaving subsequent to forcing a check in time at 10:00 pm on the equivalent day. Observers claimed that on 6 June, after the battling had halted, the Indian military executed prisoners who had their arms tied behind their backs and terminated on people who had regarded the declarations of the military to evacuate.

Deadlock over Article -370 : Election finale
The first phase of J-K elections held on September 18 saw 61 % voter turnout. The final phase of polling will be held on October 1. The votes will be counted on October 8.
After six years of central rule, Jammu and Kashmir is holding its first assembly elections since 2014 to democratically elect its first state government after the abrogation of Article 370. 16 - foreign delegates from various countries visited Kashmir to observe the conduct of the electoral process.
Key point to note is the second phase of election in Kashmir saw lower voter in comparison to assembly polls held 2014. With katra having the highest voter turnout at 79.95% while Srinagar having the lowest at 29.24%.
While the election enters it's last phase, the Politics is at its pinnacle in the UT. Endless debate over the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir has Charged the atmosphere with the anticipation over fate of the UT after the elections.
Although Here, we discuss the dead-end over the interpretation of Article 367 of the Indian Constitution, which is going to play crucial role if Congress or other such parties who have promised to restore special provisions of Article 370 to the valley if elected to power.
Maharaja Hari Singh's dilemma amidst coveting tension between India and Pakistan in 1947, led to decision which gave rise to the Instrument of Accession giving India control over certain matters of J-K including defence.
Later the interim government of J-K in 1949, negotiated the special status by joining the Indian Constituent Assembly which provide them their own flag, constitution and criminal code.
Now, about the controversy around the abrogation of special status to J-K. Firstly, what was found to be shady was how the dissolution of constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was dealt with, if it was handled properly there would have been a smooth integration of the state into the Republic of India.
But Nonetheless the catch here is with multiple interpretation and new addition to Article 367.
The new clause added stated that term 'constituent assembly' should be understood as 'legislative assembly' by adding in Article 370 (3). But at that moment of judgement, J-K was under the rule of Article - 356, meant which the legislative assembly and governor of the state, Shall be replaced by Union Parliament and President rule. Therefore, giving the BJP-led parliament pass the resolution from both the houses and amend the article 370 via Constitutional order 272 power granted under the newly constituted article - 370(3) by the President of India discarding the special status to the state.
Interestingly, Article 35A was also affected by the 2019 SC judgement, which defined the erstwhile state's permanent residents. The law curtailed the rights of non-residents in terms of equal opportunity of state employment, acquiring property and settle in Jammu and Kashmir.
Supreme Court with the 5-judge bench had a mixed opinion over the interpretation of article 367. Some agreed the Article 370 was a transitory and temporary provision that should have been dissolved earlier but was not due to the loop-holes in the asymmeteric federal structure of Jammu and Kashmir in 1953 with confusion over its constitent Assembly and legislative Assembly situation. Some concurred with panel saying amendment through back-door should not be permissible. With petitioners challenging the order of 2019 arguing on the basis of Article - 370(1)(a) which has its own inherent intricacies as far as it goes. Thus, the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation and order the Union Government to restore state-hood to Jammu and Kashmir by conducting elections by 30th September, 2024.
The blessed one in the whole event was Ladakh with introduction of Jammu and Kashmir reorganization Act, 2019. The act passed by the Indian Parliament on Aug 5, 2019, allowing the state to be divided into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. From a very long time there was a agitation among people of Ladakh demanding it to be a UT as they were neglected and out on a limb as the funds were not available most being diverted to J-K and development being the least priorites with respect to Ladakh people.
Kashmir has been the epicenter of militancy sinces decades which is not a hidden fact due to constant interference in its Politics by Pakistan on its majority population. But since the revocation of article 370 it was made an easy task for Union Government to boast the economy of Kashmir striking a balance in the valley by creating opportunities for general youth to access easy education and job opportunity with good infrastructure and promotion tourism in the valley itself which in turn curbed the militancy.
While it's is still a challenge for the government to rehabilitate the Kashmiri Pandit population there, which were once the heart of the valley.

Non-playing captains take centre court
By Faisul Yaseen
It is a Wimbledon of words and non-playing captains are calling the shots.
Welcome to Kashmirâs political court where the non-playing captains do not touch a racquet, yet their every serve is scrutinised, every rally dissected.
Their juicy rhetoric and intricate political maneuvering on Kashmirâs electoral landscape have turned the campaign for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections into a fascinating spectacle.
Sitting on the sidelines, these veteran strategists, with decades of political acumen, are the true maestros of this championship, their players mere extensions of their game plan on the electoral court.
The forehand of the non-playing captain of National Conference (NC), Farooq Abdullah, a three-time chief minister and partyâs president, is capable of wrong-footing even the most nimble opponent.
Playing at the centre court, his game is a potent mix of charisma and political savvy. A rallying force, his aura permeates alleyways and villages, his presence commanding crowds, as though every political rally he touches turns into a grand slam event.
His team may be the ones playing the game, but it is Abdullahâs forehand that sets the ball in motion.
NC spokesman Imran Nabi Dar says that the party revolves around Abdullah.
âHe is a crowd puller and a mass mobiliser,â Dar says. âHis aura is not limited to Jammu and Kashmir.â
Across the net stands Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister and Peopleâs Democratic Party (PDP) president, whose refusal to contest in the upcoming assembly polls is drenched in nostalgia for a time when Jammu and Kashmirâs special status was intact.
She coaches her players from behind the net, boosting their spirits, to compete on her behalf in this tense political game.
Her baseline strategy?
Stay off the court, but ensure her team is ready to smash through the oppositionâs defences.
PDP Youth President and its candidate for south Kashmirâs Pulwama constituency, Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra says that while Mufti might not be contesting herself, she boosts the morale of the contesting candidates of the party as well as the PDP supporters.
âEverybody in the party wanted her to contest but she is not contesting because she believes that she was the chief minister of a state which had a special statusâŚ,â he says.
In Kashmirâs political court, where the art of the âdrop shotâ is less about finesse and more about dropping bombshells that reverberate across the Valley, the court is crowded with players from all corners of the political spectrum.
But this is no ordinary tournament.
While some non-playing captains are coaching their team players to serve aces, others are happy to let their squad members play from the baseline and hit backhand shots to win the bigger political rallies.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, leading the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), brings his years of experience to bear, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)âs high command in New Delhi tosses policy decisions from afar, their influence felt with every backhand play.
BJP J&K unitâs General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Kaul says that while senior leaders like Ram Madhav, Gangapuram Kishan Reddy, Ashish Sood, and Tarun Chugh are looking after the affairs of the party for the upcoming elections in J&K, the party high command including the BJPâs star campaigners Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are reaching out to the voters to set the ball rolling.
Like the BJP high command, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also assuming the role of the non-playing captain for the Congress in J&K.
Senior Congress leader and former legislator Ghulam Nabi Monga says that Gandhi has a lot of love for the people of Kashmir.
âA sea of people â young and old, men, women and children, came to welcome him when he recently visited Kashmir while his Bharat Jodo Yatra was also impressive,â he says. âHe is our star campaigner and connects well with the masses as he talks about Kashmir from the heart.â
Even from behind bars, Engineer Rashid, the incarcerated president of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), manages to make his presence felt on this political court.
His absence from the court itself only seems to amplify his political voice, bringing into sharp focus the unique nature of this high-stakes game.
Rashidâs son Abrar, who successfully led his campaign in the parliamentary polls and is now campaigning for the upcoming assembly polls, says the campaign not only in north Kashmir but also in south Kashmir is witnessing massive crowds.
âYes, Rashid Sahab is the major factor in our campaign,â he says. âThis is because he has tirelessly worked for the people.â
The match might have started at love-all but the rallies are getting longer and longer.
Meanwhile, the electorate watches with bated breath as the score teeters between advantage and deuce.
As the political grand slam unfolds in J&K, a single fault may be forgiven, but a double fault could cost the entire match.
With the final set approaching, the tension is palpable. Who will emerge victorious in this most unusual of championships? Will it be the seasoned veterans, their experience guiding them through the trickiest of tiebreaks? Or will a dark horse emerge, armed with a powerful serve of fresh ideas and grassroots support?
One thing is certain: in the grand arena of Kashmiri politics, where the lines between sport and statecraft blur, there is no such thing as a simple game. Here, every point is a policy, every set a mandate, and the match itself is nothing less than the future of the region.
October 8 will determine who wins the point, game, set, match, and this grand slam called Kashmirâs political theatre.

Week 1: Praxis - Creative Practice vs Critical Thinking
This week, we discussed the significance of connecting creative practice to critical thinking. As designers in training, we need to take note of how the content we consume can make inquisitive statements whilst maintaining creativity behind it. We were required to write a short story based on a social issue. I chose to write about religious hate crimes.
This week, we discussed the significance of connecting creative practice to critical thinking. As designers in training, we need to take note of how the content we consume can make inquisitive statements whilst maintaining creativity behind it. We were required to write a short story based on a social issue. I chose to write about religious hate crimes.Â
My story follows a riot occurring in the 1990s in Rajouri, Jammu, and Kashmir (India), that was driven because of religious and political differences created during the Partition of British India in 1947. We still face repercussions of the political choices made then and this has caused lots of violence in India.Â
I believe any form of storytelling are effective ways to make bold statements. Specifically to me, creative writing is a form of expression that I use to communicate my feelings frequently. I wanted my story to be a mix of fiction and reality. The purpose of this was to give the problem at hand emotion - making the reader understand the situation more empathatically. Â
Moreover, I dived deeper into a performance artist and feminist, Khubra Khademi. She is well-known for provocative works that address gender inequality, womenâs rights, and societal issues in Afghanistan. She uses her art to challenge the patriarchy of the Taliban regime. In 2015, Khademi performed âArmourâ where she walked through Kabul in a suit of metal armour that accentuated her curves, drawing attention to her chest and back. Her performance spoke for the harassment women experience in public spaces. During this walk, Khademi quickly became a victim of harassment and verbal abuse. She received death threats that forced her to flee Afghanistan.Â
Khademiâs work now still follows the same themes and is expressed through her creativity. This ties in with our theme of Creative practice with critical thinking - using artistic expression for a cause.Â
