Today marks 10 years since my suicide attempt. So many thing have changed since then. I’ve had high and lows and broken moments, but I have been saved by so many things. The people that I love and who love me, music, poetry, books, art, characters have all stepped in and given me hope when I needed it. As bittersweet as today is, I’m grateful that I’ve had 10 more years of wonderful moments that I never thought I’d have when I was seventeen. And as much as I hate sharing so publicly, I want people to know there is no shame in asking for help. My life’s endeavor is to encourage, inform, and inspire people to share the pieces of themselves they want to hide away. My arms are open for you. Death sucks. A lot.

Before I go any further, let me just say that suicide is NOT selfish. If anything it's a person trying to be selfless by not being a burden (which they weren't in the first place, but it's hard to see that through depression). Suicide sucks, no question. I hate when people say that it's a selfish act. I've been on the brink of that move and the problem is in all the lies depression tells a person. Depression says that they aren't worth the air they breathe, the space they use on this planet or love at all from anyone. It's really hard to be in the darkness and hold onto the truth that people need and want you to stay. Depression is loud and very convincing. When you mix depression and grief...oh man, that is a whole new level of darkness that is suffocating – where up and down have no meaning because it all feels the same.

If you feel like you are unworthy, unloved or unneeded in ANY WAY, please get help. Asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness; it's a flashing neon sign of strength. You are worth it all. You are loved. You are needed. I know it's hard. Keep going. We believe in you.

Today we lost Chester Bennington who was the Lead Singer of Linkin Park. Through my journey to the depths of the darkness, I relied on music more than anything. Music fed my soul and expressed how I was feeling more than any other form of relief. Music spoke what I couldn't find the words for and then helped me see that I was not alone in how I felt. I listened to LP for most of my 20s because they're badass and Chester had an AMAZING voice of which I could never get enough. Chester sang from his soul and I'm positive any fan could tell and hear it clearly. Today, Chester died from suicide. I am heartbroken and in complete shock. We needed him. I needed him. Yes, I'm using “I” a lot because this is affecting me more than any “celebrity” death has since Robin Williams. He meant a lot to me and I never got to tell him...I’ll never get to tell him. I wish he’d stayed.

Jamie Tworkowski, founder of TWLOHA, wrote this in his book “If You Feel Too Much” (which you should read):

More than anything, my wish for you is this: That when your awful darkest days come, you will know you're not alone. Pain will tell you to keep quiet, but that's a lie. Life is fragile and we all break in different ways. I hope you know that you can ask for help. Did you catch that? It is absolutely positively okay to ask for help. It simply means you're human. Help is real and it is possible; people find it every day.

It's hard to process the reality of this – LP will never be the same and Chester Bennington will only live on through his music and in our hearts.

Please get help if you need it. We're here for you.

Please hang on. You have the strength, I promise.

i came across this organization a few years back called To Write Love on Her Arms. it is inspiring and amazing and because i work in mental health, this organization stands out to me even more. it’s a movement to help show people that there is hope and it is real. this organization focuses in on depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. most importantly, jamie, the creator of this wonderful movement strives to have people understand that people need other people and that no one is alone. and that is exactly what i’m trying to do. i recently noticed on their website that they are taking donations and anyone can join to try and raise money. this is important to me and i’d appreciate anything that anyone can donate. thank you to anyone who decides to read this and donates. and remember, you are never alone. 💙 please share and help! every little bit counts. help me, help the world.

Last week was national suicide prevention week. If you saw my stories, you saw that a well known pastor died by suicide last week. I drew this, thinking about him, his family, and what he taught me about mental health the last 7 years. While, I did not know him personally, this news was still tragic and heartbreaking to me. He was a huge advocate for mental health awareness and wanted to end the stigma Christian churches tend to have on this subject. He wanted people to feel like they could talk about it and not be ashamed for struggling with it. He even started an outreach for people called @anthemofhope. 

I believe we all could use more empathy and understanding on this issue, in order to help people. I used to not understand mental illness and even get upset with those close to me who did struggle with it, then I went through a bad time with it about 6 years ago. Since, then God has opened my eyes to this issue and He is teaching me to have more empathy for people struggling with it, and how hard a burden it can be. But I believe we can help people through it with compassion and love. We can show them there is HOPE, that not all is lost.

If you have or haven’t struggled with suicidal thoughts, or mental illness, I encourage you to check out @twloha and learn how you can notice the signs of someone struggling with deep depression and/or suicidal thoughts, or how you can seek help if you struggle with these thoughts. You make today better, people love you and want to help you. There is HOPE for you. Learn how you can help others through understanding and more empathy.
