EVERYONE! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS FIC YET DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND FUCKING DO IT! ONE OF MY FAVOURITES! I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I SAW THE NEW CHAPTER I NEARLY STARTED CRYING AT WORK! IT'S PERFECT AS ALWAYS!
chapter eight of wriggle up on dry land (the ted lasso au where everything is the same except for jamie, nelson roadâs fifteen year old groundsmanâs assistant) is up!
The edge of the table has a little crack in it. Ted notices it when he sits down with his plate of cornbread and he worries at it with his thumbnail as he considers the answer to Beardâs question. âI messed things up with Jamie,â he says eventually. Beard stays silent. He takes a drink of coffee from the same mug he always uses when heâs in Tedâs apartment. Itâs not a judgemental silence, itâs a waiting silence - a take your time, I got all night silence.
read Chapter Eight: Equilibrium on ao3!!

So itâs later in the evening and the cookingâs all done and Olaâs out and about in the restaurant, saying howdy to all the boys â
â and there is Jamie, nifty in blue and his ICON cap and pleasantly buzzy from all the drinks Dani mixed, and Ola doesnât exactly corner him, but he stops by and, âAh, you must be Jamie! Iâve heard so much about you!â
Jamie blinks a couple of times at that, trying to imagine all the times Sam might have talked to his extremly supportive dad about him, and succeeding only far too well. âOh. Uh, yeah. I mean⌠Iâve, uh. Iâve tried to do better, so. But. I guess. Uh. Yeah.â And he shrugs a little, unhappily, because he really doesnât know what to say to this gentle giant of a man whose son he terrorized for six unfortunate months a couple of years back.
Ola just looks at him, frowning but not in a nasty or angry way. Cocks his head to the side. âYes. Samuelâs told me.â
Jamie makes a face at that but before he has time to say anything else â offer any apologies â Ola plows on: âHeâs told me about his very good friend whoâs been such great support to him in this last year, in spite of him not having much support of his own.â He pauses, making sure that Jamie is hearing him: âIâve been glad to hear he has such good friends. Samuel has been very fortunate.â
âOh.â Jamie blinks again. And again. His eyes are wide. A slight shine to them, maybe. He looks away from Ola; away from Sam, happily (and inexpertly) (but still succesfully) flirting with Simi by the bar.
And Ola puts his arm around Jamieâs shoulders and itâs warm and itâs heavy, but it doesnât weight him down; it grounds him. âTell me, Jamie,â Ola rumbles, as he gently guides Jaime to one of the stuffed benches by the wall. âWhat do you think aboutââ
(And if Sam looks up from his conversation with Simi and if his eyes stray to the men on the bench⌠heâd smile, yeah, soft and aching and pleased with the way Jamie â seemingly unconsciously â is leaning into Olaâs touch, listening and grinning and gesturing wildly as he answer whatever questions the older man asks of him. Sam sees them, and he smiles.)

Not to get sad but you ever think about how Ted's fear of being a bad father to Henry kept him from being a good coach to Jamie. Because Jamie needed someone to guide him. Jamie didn't need help with the talent department, or the confidence department, he needed support. He needed someone to be proud of him. Like after the game against Man City where Ted walks by and he sees Jamie being mistreated. Jamie needs the opposite of that. He needed Ted in a different way than the rest of the team needed Ted and Ted was unable to give him that. Ted failed Jamie in a way he didn't fail any of his other players and I think it's so interesting to think about. Because I personally think Jamie still doesn't think Ted likes him very much. I think Jamie thinks Ted only brought him back to Richmond because he needed the same thing everyone needs from him - he needed a good football player. He didn't need or want Jamie, just his talent.
I love Ted this isn't anti-Ted at all but I really feel like he did wrong by Jamie.
#Ted Lasso#Jamie Tartt#Jamie & Ted#listen Jamie is my bias in every situation but I will always think Jamie deserved better from Ted

I despise what they did with James Tartt's character this episode and his relationship with Jamie. I hate when every show/movie depicts awful parents doing the bare minimum out of nowhere to change and then has the abused child forgive their parent or make amends 'for themselves.' As if the only option for someone to heal from their trauma and abuse is to forgive and/or reconnect with their abuser.
Fuck that! It's unrealistic to expect abusers to just change out of the blue, and the person who was abused owes them absolutely nothing even if they do. Sometimes it is actually more harmful to someone's physical or mental health to try to reconnect. For the love of god, can we just let an abused character acknowledge what happened to them and find a way to move on without having to forgive their abuser?
It's especially egregious in this instance, where Jamie was being actively abused by his father as of just one year ago and hasn't even outwardly acknowledged/named that mistreatment as abuse. We just found out a couple episodes ago that his dad was responsible for Jamie being sexually assaulted at the age of 14! And now the writers expect us to think it's a good idea for Jamie to forgive and reach out to him (without even knowing his dad was in rehab in the first place)?
I wish the show was brave enough to not feel the need to try to narratively redeem a truly awful person like James. At the very least if they were going to show James 'changing,' they could have at least had Jamie acknowledge that change but ultimately decide to keep his father out of his life anyway. But I guess that's just too much to ask for. đ
#ted lasso spoilers#jamie tartt#ted lasso negativity#sorry for the negativity but i am SICK of this unrealistic plot that sends a harmful message to abuse victims#ive seen it in countless other shoed too#to anyone reading thus#you don't need to forgive or reconnect with your abuser to live a happy and healthy life#jamie deserves better#ted lasso meta#my meta

One of the things thatâs been noodling in my head since the finale is how Ted Lasso plays the forgiveness card in regards to the Tartt Sr situation.
Yes, Iâve banged on this drum before. I shall bang on it again. Buh-dum.
Bear with me as I start from the outside and work my way in by first referencing a moment from a different show.
In Leverage, thereâs an episode where they convince the guy theyâre trying to take down to break out of police custody by making him think heâs in the middle of a deadly epidemic thatâs being covered up by the government. The details of this arenât important, but when Nate is explaining why it worked, he says something along the lines of âthereâs a part of your brain thatâs meant to question and make judgements. What we did was we tapped into the emotional center of his brain, so that he would forget to question anything.â
Now I'm paraphrasing, but this is actually a good summary of how a lot of cons work- they create an emotional story and a sense of relationship, to make you forget to ask âwait does this guy just want my money.â Think of scary voicemails telling you your student loans got sent to collections and you need to call now. Think Nigerian Prince schemes. Think car dealerships.
Because that is the power of a story when the narrative structure follows all the guidelines. You become invested, and you believe the narrative. (This is also why Jump the Shark exists, when a narrative has wobbled so off its tracks that the belief becomes suspended, but I digress.)
So the issue for me with regards to the James Tartt Sr story line, is that from a technical standpoint the wider Story of Ted Lasso did meet the minimum requirements for âbelievable.' My coworker, for instance, absolutely loved how ALL the story lines tied up in the finale, including that one. She couldnât explain why, she just said it was âreally nice and it worked for her.â
But Iâll highlight that bit in the middleâshe couldnât explain whyâbecause thatâs the thrust of the situation. The Story, from her perspective, told a satisfying emotional conclusion by hitting all the correct points. It essentially did what a con does, and in the resulting emotion she failed to question it.
And I think therein lies the trouble with the Jamie's dad story line. Because it is being told within the scope of a broader narrative, it is allowed to coast on the merits of the rest of the narrative. For three seasons, the show preaches forgiveness and second chances and people having depth, so when it asks you to do it again at the end - with Jamie's dad, hell I'd even say with Rupert for a hot second - you already have within you all the emotional build-up to say 'yes.'
Except that the buildup doesnât happen with James, or even Rupert, it happens to the people that they hurt. Jamieâs the one who learned how to be better. Jamie is the one who tried to make amends to the people he hurt. Jamie is the one who had to un-fuck his whole life. Jamie earned all of that emotional payoff.
His dad did not.
So the show sells you one emotional story, and at the end shuffles in another to reap the benefits of it.
But just like a con only works as long as you donât start to question it, the second you question the James Tartt Sr storyline the more you realize how much of that work happened elsewhere in the story.
You know those youtube videos that are cut together scenes of âevery time This Character talks about Big Plot Pointâ? Think of those videos. Sometimes theyâre a concentrated dose of very high tense moments, but sometimes theyâre a little anemic, arenât they? Sometimes you watch those videos and realize just how much heavy lifting other scenes did just to imply that the narrative was moving forward.
Well if you made a youtube video of âall the scenes that mention / have James Tartt Sr in themâ and cut them together, you definitely do NOT get an emotionally satisfying ending. In fact you go from someone who implies that their father is violent, to seeing their father be violent, to seeing their father threaten violence to his kid, to seeing him inflict that violence on someone else in place of his kid, to the kid confiding in someone else that even more fucked up shit happened, to the kidâs mom trying to console him, to the kid literally showing symptoms of PTSD at the idea his father might be around-
-to someone asking him if maybe he should try to let that go
-to their dad being proud of them
-to reestablishing contact
-to a happy montage of them smiling together the end.
At bare minimum there is an entire confrontation missing. And that is minimum. Minimum narrative work said this storyline should have had a climax. But this is a storyline that did not breathe on its own- it relied on a dozen smaller, unrelated, moments to give it the illusion of a satisfying ending.
And since it was weaved in with the rest, to some people â people who were too in vested in the story to question it â that was a great ending. That was a perfect ending.
Thatâs the illusion of telling a story- people are predisposed to believing the story that is being told, to the point where they will forget to ask questions.
When people talk about this kind of narrative being a dangerous one? Thatâs where that comes from. Thatâs what it means. Itâs not just that someone depicted a story of someone forgiving their abuser, itâs that the did it in such a way that that isnât even what happened. Most of the time it is the narrative that forgives the abuser, not the character. The character doesnât get to scream and cry and let out all the pain they suffered. The character doesnât get to set boundaries and learn to experience the world safely. The character, often times, isnât even worth an apology from the person who hurt them.
It isn't the character who gets closure in these narratives; it's the audience who does. And itâs so insidious that it can very nearly trick a person in real life into thinking that maybe they too will get closure if they forgive someone â without ever realizing that in these stories, the narrative was never on their side in the first place.
#all together now#fuck jamie's dad#it's not that those stories are impossible but it is that the way they are told is largely irresponsible#and blinded by the illusion of a satisfying conclusion#abuse cw#jamie tartt#he deserved better#i didn't get much writing done tonight but this counts right?

I can't handle this, how can they make Jamie look like such a scared little kid even though he just punched his father.
This entire episode of him just giving in to his father so he'll leave him alone. Jaime closing off and acting tough just to be reduced to a young little boy when his father talks to him God.

My Ted Lasso Re-watch: S1E10
The Hope That Kills You: Jamie Tartt and his 'dad'
So in my post yesterday I said I wanted to focus on this specifically and that's what I'm doing.
Trigger/Content warning for abuse.
Jamie has suffered abuse from his father since he was a child. Football was the reason he came back into his son's life and his overbearing and controlling ways forced Jamie to be the person he is now. He wanted his dad to stop calling him soft, so he made himself a prick so people would think he is tough. In reality, Jamie was never soft, he was a child, growing up, playing a game that he loved because his mum wanted him to be happy.
In season 1 Jamie is supposed to be 23 years old. His dad showed back up in his life when he showed talent, and used him to brag to people. Because let's face it, James Tartt Snr has not done a damn good thing in his life. His claim to fame is his son. Nothing he has actually done himself, but what Jamie is capable of doing. He didn't show up to support his, we wanted a trophy. He wanted everyone to see him a 'good dad' because Jamie was achieving. And to keep up that appearance, he abused his son. He continued to do so until Jamie fought back in season 2. This time it suck because Jamie had Roy.
For 10+ years, Jamie suffered ridicule, mental, emotional, and physical abuse at the hands of his own father. It caused him to dissociate when he was being yelled at, as we see in this episode and in the episode where Ted shouts at him. While Ted isn't his father and has no intention of hurting him, Jamie's response is to try and protect himself, by shutting down and making himself small. Making himself less of a target. Tartt Snr, in the other hand, wouldn't hesitate to hurt Jamie if it got his point across. In the scene we see in this episode, Jamie already started to dissociate, but Tratt Snr threw the boot to bring Jamie's attention back. But it was very close to hitting Jamie, even if it wasn't his intention. But it doesn't matter if it was his intention or not, he was trying to scare his son into acting a certain way. It's still abuse. And he goes on to shove Jamie's head down, forcefully. It's still abuse.
Now, the thing that people like to discuss is Ted's actions. He saw what went down and left. And Jamie saw that. People like to say that he should have done something to help Jamie. But the what could he have done? Reasonably and honestly, what could Ted have done?
I think people sometimes forget is that if you don't have an exit strategy ready for a victim of abuse, it's not going to help. It will make things worse. Sure, Ted could go in and try to stop what was going on, but Tartt Snr clearly has no problems using violence, and it would get Ted hurt too, because Ted isn't one to fight. And it will then make things worse for Jamie later. When watching the show back, knowing what happens to Coach Beard in 'Beard's Night Out' and he comes across Tartt Snr and his two friends, Beard gets the shit kicked out of him. And he only threw Tartt Snr out of the locker room. For that one small act, Beard got beaten up. You don't think the same or worse could happen to Ted if he walked in?
It's very easy to say, 'Oh, I'd do something if I saw it' but we don't. When we actually see it happen, majority of us freeze up and don't know how to react, because we're in an unfamiliar situation and we don't know how to handle it. We can't say for sure that when Ted was a coach in Kansas that he saw something like this happen. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. If he did, then he might know not to intervene until a way out was planned. If he didn't, then how would he know what to do? But he did what most people, regretfully, would do. He walked away.
That's the sad fact of the world. When abuse happens, people can't act or won't act to help. Because it's not our place, it's not our business. Ted's reaction was normal. And I think that's what annoys a lot of people. Because when we hear about stories of abuse, we think of what could be done. And it's so much easier to do that when you're on the outside looking in. Hindsight is a wonderful if you don't have to go through this. But when actually faced with it, would you really be able to help?
All I'm saying is that Ted's actions are true to life. We wish, as viewers, for him to do more because he's the good guy. But, he's more realistic than we give him credit for. And in that moment he was.
Luckily, Jamie does get away from his 'dad' and manages to start undoing the damage that was done to him. He starts living and playing football for himself again. To make his mum proud of him. And that's amazing. Jamie deserves to be happy and live free from that abuse. His mum got out and is now happily married to a wonderful man who loves to bake. She found her happiness away from her abusive ex (because I would not put it past Tartt Snr to be abusive towards her while they were together). Jamie needs to find his own version of happiness away from his dad. This time with support from the people around him, which eventually becomes the A.F.C Richmond team, but more importantly Roy and Keeley.
Now, that scene in the last episode, I will have more thoughts about when I get there. Because I will have more thoughts about the locker room scene in season 2 and the 'thank you, fuck you' bit when Jamie talks to Ted in season 3. I will talk about it when I get there. For now, this is all I can say. I have no idea if any of this makes sense to anyone but me, feel free to tell me it doesn't and where abouts, ask me questions, leave comments, all that stuff. But right now, at the time of writing, that's where my head is at. So I'll leave it here.

Iâve written it in a couple of fics just in passing, but I took the time to write it out LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN if the show gave a fuck.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49900930
it kills me that jamie never found out ted didn't give him back to man city or want him to leave. that he didn't find out ted stormed up to rebecca's office and wanted him back. that he wasn't some disappointment. and sure at the end of the show he knows richmond wants him there, but he doesn't know that they always did. kills me.

JAMIE TARTT | i'd be better armed if you agreed to take it.
PAIRING: jamie tartt x fem!reader
WORD COUNT: 5.0k
SUMMARY: higgins' new assistant happens to be an old friend of the reader's, and their reunion hits jamie with major feelings of jealousy. when the team thinks that the pair of them are going on a date soon, jamie decides enough is enough.
WARNINGS: language
A/N: i actually like this story a lot better especially the dialogue! + jealous!jamie was really fun to write HAHAHA i hope that all of you enjoy this and title is from the song '(you) on my arm' by leith ross :) also i apologize in advance i'm not the best at writing kissing scenes
You loved your job, truly. This was the first time you've had a decent, no, fucking amazing boss that didn't make you want to pull your hair out every time they called you into the office.Â
But being Rebecca's assistant also meant that you sometimes had to help Higgins out with... well, whatever the Director of Football Operations does. It was fine in the beginning, just scheduling appointments and keeping track of ticket sales, but once Richmond got promoted, it felt like your work doubled.
It only took two weeks before you begged Rebecca to get Higgins an assistant of his own. Luckily, she obliged and asked Higgins to start interviewing possible candidates for the job.Â
You hoped that whatever extra load you got due to Higgins occupying himself with selecting an assistant would be worth it from how much would be lifted off you when he did. So when you got the message from Rebecca to help delegate your duties to the new assistant, you practically ran to the clubhouse that morning.
You were too excited messaging your boss that you'd be there soon that you ended up bumping into someone near the entrance.
"Shit!" You exclaim as you almost lose your balance, but are steadied by the other person who turned out to be Jamie.
"Ay, watch where you're going, yeah?" Jamie warned casually, as he let go of your arms once you recovered.
"Sorry, Jamie." You straighten up and walk in with him. "I'm just really excited. Higgins finally picked an assistant and they're here today."
"Oh yeah, you were fucking drowning in work a few weeks ago." And by drowning, he meant it literally. The football player recalled seeing you walking past the locker room carrying a stack of papers taller than you were. You refused any help from the team, partly because they had to get to training and mainly because you didn't want them to see how the tear stains on some of the pages.
"Yeah," you chuckle at the memory. "But, after a few days of helping the new kid out, I'll finally be free." You stretch your arms up in the air and cheer. You were too busy celebrating to notice how soft Jamie's expression had become.Â
He loved seeing you act yourself around him, a big jump from when you used to glare at him around the office. He had denied it for a while, but Jamie started to like you around the time he'd gotten back from Man City.Â
You knew him before then, when he was a massive prick who stepped over â even literally at times, â his teammates. But after he returned, you felt bad for the guy for how the rest of the team was treating him, no matter if he deserved it. Ted had told you about what they talked about when Jamie approached him about joining the team again, and a part of you felt like he needed at least some kind of welcoming presence in the building.Â
You started greeting him more often when you ran into each other in the halls and sometimes offered him the candies you keep in your desk drawer whenever he passed your desk, just small things. Jamie would usually just end up hanging out with you during his breaks because he didnât have anyone else to spend it with. The first few times, he would just sit there in silence while you worked, but one âHowâs your day going?â from you, and he was more than willing to chat.
Then, of course, he gradually regained the teamâs trust and started hanging out with them, but even then, your little interactions with him didn't stop. He'd invite you whenever the team had a get-together and would sometimes drop bags of candies at your desk to "re-stock" your drawer. You just thought it was his way of returning your kindness. But what you didn't realize was that the star football player was starting to fall for you.Â
Jamie tried to ignore it, saying to himself that he just felt indebted to you, but then it started to manifest in different ways. How he would try and come up with reasons to approach you the next day, how he'd get distracted whenever you had to visit the pitch during practice, and how your awkward habits became something he looked forward to. It's been a while since he felt like this about anyone and was more anxious about rejection than he's felt about any of his games, so he didn't make any obvious pass at you.
So now, as you asked the receptionist where the Director of Football Operations was, Jamie decided to wait for you to spend as much time with you as possible.Â
You notice Jamie staying back and relayed the information to him. "Higgins is introducing them to the team, so I guess I'll be going with you to the locker room." You nudge him with your shoulder as you continue to walk through the building. You've always tried your best to ask casual with Jamie, possibly in an effort to make yourself feel normal around him and not constantly blushing every time he looked at you.
As you approach the room, you hear Higgins explaining what the new assistant would be doing for the players. "So if ever you need help with anything I've listed, you can go to Anthony Perez here, instead."
Anthony Perez. No fucking way. You and Jamie enter the locker room and are instantly greeted by the sight of an old friend.
"Anthony, you fucking bastard!" You scream enthusiastically, causing everyone in the room to turn to you, including Anthony. It takes him a second before registering who you were. The moment he does, he raises his arms and you practically leap into him for a hug.
"Oh my god!" Anthony exclaims, as he lets go of you and puts you down.
"I didn't know you were the new assistant!" You lightly smack his arm.
"I didn't know you even worked here!" He defends himself as the two of you turn to find the entire team's eyes on you, including Jamie's.
"Shit, sorry," You laugh as you make some distance between you and Anthony. "Didn't mean to make our reunion so dramatic."
"I assume you two know each other?" Higgins asks and you both nod.
"Anthony and I went to school together," You quickly explain. "From sixth form to uni. Of course, I haven't heard from him in two years." You jokingly glare, causing him to roll his eyes.
"Sorry, I got busy, okay?" He whispers an apology before you both chuckle again.
"Well, I hope your friendship will make it easier to help him get accustomed to the job." You smile at Higgins before the three of you excuse yourself to let the players get ready for training.Â
You're so engrossed in catching up with Anthony that you didn't even notice the look Jamie was giving him.Â
"They seem close!" Dani innocently says as he puts his shoes on.
"You don't think something is going on with them, do you?" Colin chimes in.
"Well, she's never even mentioned him before, so I doubt it," Sam argues, but Isaac shakes his head. "Nah bruv, that hug was way too intimate for just friends."
"I've seen her hug Keeley and Rebecca like that, too. That might just be how she greets her friends." Jan offers and the team continues to debate it, but at that point, Jamie has had enough. It was already shit having to watch that interaction, but having your teammates talk about it as you pretend not to care? It could not get any worse.
Jamie pulls out a can of body spray from his locker and slams it closed, before turning to everyone. "Can everyone just stop talking about it and get ready?"Â
The room goes quiet, as the football player turns around and starts getting changed. The rest of the team exchange looks, before getting ready themselves. Most of them had a hunch that something was going on between the two of you but didn't have any proof, until now. They just hoped they were wrong about you and Anthony, in an attempt to stop Mt. Jamie from erupting.
ââ
For most players, if something happened right before training that put them in a sour mood, it would mess up their performance on the pitch. Of course, Jamie wasn't like most players. He might be playing even better during that training period. The coaches didn't even have to give him the signal; he was already in 'prick' mode.Â
Maybe it was the appearance of Anthony or the fact that you had never been that excited to see him even though he thought you guys were becoming close, but he was playing aggressively and was much more focused than he needed to be for a practice game. The coaches started to take notice after he viciously tackled one of the second teams.Â
"Whistle!" Roy shouts, pausing their game. Ted takes a step forward and shouts, "Hey Jamie! Love the passion, but those are still your teammates. Ya'll have a game next week, so better save that attitude for the real one."
"Okay, coach!" Jamie replies through gritted teeth. He takes a deep breath as they continue to play, trying to calm himself down. Ted was right; there was no point in taking out his anger here. Not when the source of said anger was just inside the building.
Once the morning session was over and they were off for lunch, Jamie headed over to Rebecca's office, expecting to see you waiting at the desk outside like you usually were, but instead, he almost runs into the owner of the football club.
"Jamie!" Rebecca exclaims, backing away from the football player to avoid a collision. "What brings you here?" He only needed to glance at the empty table for her to know what was going on. "Oh, well, if you're looking for her, better head to Mr. Higgins' office. She's helping his new assistant get used to the system."Â
This causes the player's jaw to clench. Jamie mutters a quick thanks before heading to the Director of Football Operations' office, where he found you hunched over a chair and directing something on the laptop to Anthony.
You had spent the first hour of the day basically catching up with Anthony about what you've been doing the past few years. Once you ran out of stories though, you were forced to actually start teaching him what to do.
You started with the simple things like how to organize the emails, fixing the schedule, and what information to take note of, so you could ask your bosses' about it. Anthony's a quick learner, so you guys were making good progress. Once he practically mastered the routine, the two of you went to the clubhouse cafe to get some early lunch. Most of the food there was pre-packed and theyâd usually just microwave it, but over the years, you've developed a fondness for them. You bring back the food to Higgins' office and continue to work on it till you hear someone clearing their throat.
You perk up when you realize who it came from. "Jamie! Hi, what're you doing here?"
Jamie's eyes bounce between the two of you, before settling on your own. "Well, I checked your desk but you weren't there, and Rebecca said you'd probably be here, so I went over here. And now I'm wondering if you wanted to get lunch?"
You move to say yes, but quickly back out when you remember the wrappers on the desk. "Oh, sorry Jamie, Anthony and I just ate something from the cafe cause we wanted to spend the lunchtime working on some emails. Maybe another time?" You try and hide the disappointment in your voice by giving Jamie a small smile.
Jamie's expression falters, but he quickly bounces back. "Sure, no problem. Bye," The football player waves at you â and just you, â before heading back downstairs. He shouldn't be acting like this. Feeling this dejected someone saying she can't have lunch with him?
You weren't fairing that well, either. Your shoulders slump once he disappears from view, then you turn back to Anthony who seems to be holding back a laugh. "What's with you?"
"Nothing, just amused at how even two years later, you still don't know how to talk to the guys you like."
You scoff at his response and hit his shoulder. "What do you mean? I do not like Jamie." You protest, which only causes Anthony to roll his eyes.
"Oh please, it's like you transformed back to a seventeen-year-old the way you got excited when he asked you to get lunch with him." You shake your head, but he continues. "It's clear as day that you have a crush on him."
âThat word makes us sound like we're seventeen again," You retort, before redirecting the topic back to the task at hand.
But you knew he was right. Even back in the early days of working here, you couldn't deny that you found Jamie attractive. Anyone with eyes could see it, but he was dating Keeley and was a massive prick, so nothing ever came about from it.
Then, he started spending more time with you, checking up on you and stopping you in the halls just to chat. You realized that he was actually pretty sweet when he was off the pitch and you started to realize that you wanted to spend time with him, not just out of pity like before. Plus, you don't think he's seen anyone in a while, so there really was no reason for you to deny your feelings any longer.
Except, of course, the fear of getting rejected by him and ruining the steady and comfortable relationship you currently have. Which is a good reason, you think. You shake your head and try and continue your work in peace.
After spending your lunch writing up reports, it only took another hour to finish up both your and Anthony's duties, so the two of you update Higgins on your progress and ask if you could observe practice for a bit. He scans through your work, before happily letting the two of you go. The moment you get to the pitch, your eyes instantly look for Jamie who is doing pretty well, to no one's surprise. You join the coaches where theyâre standing.
Anthony was already a big football fan, so he was able to recognize almost all of the players on the pitch. In fact, he was even saying things that you weren't aware of, despite your three years of working for the owner of a football club. He bends down to whisper a joke in your ear, but the amusement never hits because soon after, you hear O'Brien groaning in pain. You both look up to see Jamie already helping the goalkeeper up after kicking the ball right into his stomach.Â
"Whistle! Tartt, stop fucking injuring your teammates!" Roy shouts, to which Jamie quickly apologizes. The practice game continues, but not without you leaning to ask Beard something.
"Coach, is Jamie okay? He seemed fine when I was with him earlier," You turn your head, as Beard continues to watch the practice.
"He's been playing like that all day. Something must've pissed him off." You open your mouth to say something, but Beard reads your mind. "No, we did not give him the signal." You nod before turning back to the game.
You meet Jamie's eyes as he runs across the pitch, and you take the opportunity to give him a smile and a thumbs up, hoping it encourages him somehow. He only nods his head in acknowledgment before continuing, but you can tell in the next few plays that he seems to be calming down. After a while, you and Anthony decide to head back to the office after Rebecca asks you to send some emails on her behalf.
Jamie watched the two of you head back to the building and tried to ignore that growing feeling when Anthony leaned down and rested his arm on your shoulders. He tries and shakes himself right before continuing the game, ignoring all the possibilities of why heâd do that.
The real reason was that Anthony had decided to tease you, whispering close, "Somebody likes you," in a sing-songy voice. "And his name is Jamie Tartt doo-doo-do-dooâ"
That exact remark makes you jab his side. "Shut the fuck up, Anthony. He does not." Anthony lets it go as the two of you reach your desk and he leaves you to do your work, though you can't help but feel warm inside at the thought of it being true.
â
Once he gets changed after training, Jamie practically ran upstairs to find you. Usually, he'd offer to drive you home and before Anthony, you'd be too tired to be polite and say no. He stopped himself from sending a message to you once he realized that you had already left. Maybe she's with Anthony, but Jamie shakes his head because fuck that. Jamie Tartt does not get hung over a girl. At least, the old him didn't.
New Jamie had been starting to hope that you stayed in the office longer just so he could see you again, even if you would be busy doing work. He sighs as he decides to leave the building when someone jumps in front to scare him. "Boo!"
"Jesus fucking Christ," he exclaims and steps back before seeing you losing your mind over his reaction. "What'd you do that for?"
"I'm sorry," You apologize in between your laughing fits. "I didn't realize how easily startled you were." After a few more seconds, you finally straighten up and lift two plastic bags.
Jamie gives you a confused look, before you explain, "When we went to watch training, Coach Beard said you've been playing like that the whole day which can only mean one thing; you're in a shit mood. And you don't have to tell me why, but,"
You hand him one of the bags and one whiff tells Jamie it's from that Indian restaurant he loves. "I thought some dinner would cheer you up," Jamie gives you a genuine smile, one you got used to seeing but always love when it shows up. âBecause thereâs nothing rich people love more than free food.â You add, causing him to roll his eyes.
"Plus, I wanted to make up for not having lunch with you, and celebrate the fact that I now actually have the time to do this again." You continue as the two of you walk over to Jamie's car.
You get in the passenger seat as Jamie turns the car on. The two of you have shared dinner there multiple times before, so you practically had a system for it, and Jamie always "pays you back" by giving you a ride home. You open all the dishes and Jamie quickly starts to devour it.
The two of you enjoy the dinner in silence, â except for the occasional "Pass the pita," or something of the sort â till Jamie decides to ask the burning question thatâs been on his mind. "So, how did you and Anthony get so close?" It was an innocent question, but one whose answer could either ease Jamie's thoughts or amplify them ten-fold.
You look up at him, mid-bite, and quickly swallow the food, before replying, "Well, you already know we went to school together, but we were actually seated next to each other for a whole semester, so naturally we became close since we saw each other every day."
Jamie starts to clean up the empty containers but signals you to continue. "To be honest, I kinda liked him back then." Oblivious to how tense Jamie just got, you laugh. "But the crush didn't last long honestly, cause I realized that he wasn't really my type."Â
Jamie takes the opportunity. "What is your type, then?"
"Oh, hot footballers, naturally." You decide to give a somewhat honest answer, but cloak it in a layer of sarcasm to hopefully throw Jamie off. "Like Richard," You try and convince Jamie with your tone, but you can barely hold in your laughter afterward.
"Oh fuck off," Jamie rolls his eyes, causing you to laugh even harder. "I'm telling him that tomorrow."
"Jamie Tartt, you fucking wouldn't!" You spend the rest of the ride to your flat trying to get him to promise to say nothing, which ends with a pinky promise to secrecy.
â
The next few days are a mix of hanging out with Anthony, eating meals with Jamie, and finishing up work so you can spend the rest of the day chilling at your desk. You almost forgot what it felt like to have free time and actually relax during work breaks.
You arrive at the clubhouse and immediately head to the Coach's office as per Rebecca's instructions to deliver some documents for the season. There, you meet up with Anthony who also had to bring something to Ted.
When you realize the coach hasn't arrived yet, you decide to wait outside the locker room. Anthony turns to you. "Hey, I forgot to tell you yesterday, but Mina's visiting!" Mina was Anthony's girlfriend and also your former classmate, who once again, you haven't seen in two years. You perk up and ask when youâd get the chance to see her.
Anthony pulls out his phone before responding, "I can make a reservation for us somewhere at, 7 pm?" You quickly scan your mental to-do list and once you realize your schedule is free, you nod.
"Yeah, that works! We'll both be done with work, anyway."Â
The two of you are busy planning out your meeting with Mina that you don't notice Isaac and Colin eavesdropping as they make their way to the locker room. From the snippet that they heard, it sounded like the two of you were planning a night out, confirming their suspicions that there was something going on between the two of you.
They share this with Sam, who tries to reason with them. "Friends can go out to dinner without it meaning anything!"
But as they continue discussing it, the more it becomes harder to deny. I mean, the two of you were always together and not to mention, your shared history. They try and hide this from Jamie, â partly to save themselves from the football player's wrath during training, â but once the morning session was over, they crowd him and quickly explain the situation.
At this moment, Jamie didn't even protest their assumption of his feelings â he had accepted that he wasnât the best at hiding it from them, â and simply stayed silent, which was incredibly worrying. They decide to leave him be and walk back to their lockers, trying to figure out a game plan. They thought you and Jamie would be great together and a guy from your past was not going to stand in the way of their teammate finding someone, not if they have anything to do with it.
Soon after, Anthony enters the locker room and calls out to Sam. The pair walk away to talk and Anthony starts, "Do you happen to have an open table at Ola's tonight? I'm planning to take someone special there and I know how great the food is."
"Well," Sam considers saying that they're fully booked â which big chance, they are, â and there's nothing he could do, but his guilt at even the thought of lying takes over. "Sure, don't worry." Anthony smiles and thanked the player before heading out, but not before promising that he'd send him the proper details later.
Sam heads back to his two teammates and explains what happened, to which Isaac suggests booking the whole restaurant for the team, crashing their date, and making sure they have no alone time together. Colin adds that they can possibly put something in Anthony's food to force him to go home earlier, which Sam quickly shuts down. They turn to Jamie to get his input, only to find an empty bench instead.
Said teammate was already making his way to your desk to talk. Maybe it was the adrenaline from practice or the fact that he drank three cups of coffee this morning after Roy's training session, but he wasn't going to let you go on that date without saying something.
Jamie makes it up the stairs and finds you typing away at your computer. You meet his eyes for a second, before warning, "Hold on, I'm just finishing this email."
The football player decidedly ignores that statement and exclaims, "Don't go on that date." That gets you to save the email as a draft and look up from your screen. Jamie walks closer to you and you stand up, and steer him to a remote corner. If this was what you thought it was, youâd rather not have the entire office witness it go down.
"I'm sorry, what?" You try and clarify.
"Look, some of the boys told me that you and Anthony are going out tonight and I," Jamie takes a breath, "I couldn't let you go through with it. At least, without admitting that I like you. I have liked you for a while now. I didnât realize that someone could be so sweet and funny and attractive. Itâs fucking insane actually, which is why if you havenât noticed, Iâve been trying to spend as much time with you as I can. And I know itâs stupid of me to not have admitted it till itâs too late, but if by chance you feel the same, then please do not go on that date and instead, maybe go on one with me?â
You take a step back. The guy who you've secretly been pining over for how many months at this point is now trying to stop you from going on a "date,â and so the only thing you can do is stare at him. You stay like that for a second before regaining your senses and taking his hand into yours and giving him a small smile. "JamieâŚ"
If there was any right time to admit your feelings, this would be it. You open your mouth to continue, but hear Anthony call out to you. You peek over the corner and when Anthony spots you, he quickly shouts, "Look who stopped by!" and moves to reveal Mina.
"Oh my god, you're here!" You exclaim, but turn back to Jamie who has stopped in his tracks and is still holding your hand. You quickly excuse yourself, "It's so nice to see you, but could you actually give me a minute?"
The couple gives you a curious look before Jamie peeks his head over the corner and Anthony immediately understands. The two of them go back downstairs, and you assume Anthony uses the time to explain to Mina whatâs going on.
You turn back to Jamie, hoping that the moment isn't ruined, and find the football player still looking at you intently. You decide to get on with it. "Jamie, I don't know why the team thought we were going on a date, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. The girl you just saw is Anthony's girlfriend, Mina, who we also went to school with." Jamie makes an 'o' with his mouth in realization and you lightly chuckle at his expression.
"She's visiting him for the weekend and we're planning to go out to dinner, the three of us, to catch up. I'm basically going to be a third-wheel all night." At this point, Jamie's expression is a cross of embarrassment and anger, likely directed at his gossiping teammates.
Your mind replays Jamieâs confession earlier. "Jamie, did you mean what you said?" Your voice is practically a whisper, but you just have to be sure. "Like right before we got interrupted?"
Instead of giving you a solid answer, Jamie lets go of your hand and cups your face before connecting your lips. It was a soft and gentle kiss as if the football player was still hesitant, but once you reciprocated it, Jamie's confidence came right back. Fuck, and he had every right to be as cocky as he was. He was an amazing kisser.
You're pressed up against the wall, almost getting lost in it, but you break apart to stop it from escalating further when you feel Jamie's hand travel to your thigh.
"Is that enough of an answer for you?" He asks, resting his forehead against yours as you take hold of his forearms. You simply roll your eyes at how easily Jamie returns to his usual self.
You peak down the corridor and thank the universe that no one passed by during this. The two of you separate and decide to head back downstairs â with Jamie never letting go of your hand, â so you could properly greet Mina.
As you walked, you decide to jokingly question, "Were you really that worried about me going on a date that you had to go all rom-com and tell me not to go?"Â
Jamie protests, "Well, it's more of the boys' fault, isn't it? They're the ones who got in my head." He pauses for a second. "And don't act like you never wanted something like that to happen to you."
You jab his side and Jamie pretends to be in pain, before laughing it off and slinging his arm on your shoulders. You wrap your arm around his torso. "Only if it's 'one in a million' Jamie Tartt doing it."
You finally find Anthony and Mina in the locker room, with the former introducing her to the players there as his girlfriend. Jamie enters to find the three culprits, looking guiltily at the couple. Minutes after Jamie left, Sam had gotten a text from Anthony saying that their reservation was for three and explained that you were coming along for a reunion dinner with his girlfriend.
The moment they see the two of you enter the room though, Colin, Isaac, and Sam can't help but share a satisfied look, only to be ruined by the glare Jamie sends their way. You laugh at the exchange and only remove yourself from Jamie to greet Mina. You give her a tight hug, confirming Jan's observation that you did greet most of your friends like that.
You pull Jamie towards you and introduce him to Mina, who shares the same teasing look as Anthony. The couple waves at the team to leave and get lunch together. They invite you to join them which you accept, but not before grabbing and squeezing Jamie's hand as a goodbye. The three of you walk away, discussing nearby cafes and restaurants. You hear some cheering from the locker room and you can't help but laugh at how easily the boys reconcile.
Once there's enough distance between yourself and the room, Anthony leans down. "Guess you finally figured out how to talk to boys."
"Who knew it would be Jamie fucking Tartt that managed to get you out of your shell?" Mina adds and you roll your eyes at the pair. They really were made for each other.

SAY THAT AGAIN â JAMIE TARTT
masterlist
pairing: jamie tartt x fem!reader
description: the press have hounded you and jamie ever since your relationship was made public â his reputation leading them to constantly claim heâd cheated or just flat out didnât deserve you. when a player on the opposing team makes a comment to rile him up⌠he takes the bait.
warning: swearing as usual, angry jamie to v soft fluffiness when he sees you. hurt/comfort reassurance vibes :-)
authorâs note: that gif⌠no thoughts head empty !!! had to write this. hope you enjoy.
Jamie had been doing so well at keeping his temper down since he had been with you.
Something about you was like home to him â he was calm, relaxed, and most himself when he was with you, and everyone who knew him could see it.
If only the press saw it though.
There was never a dull day in the press regarding your relationship. Always some pathetic story in print about him not being good enough for you, or insinuating that he would cheat on you sooner or later, or already had.
Still, you tried your hardest not to acknowledge it or let it get to you both. Everything was good. You loved each other, and thatâs all that mattered.
You made him happy and he made you happy, and whether or not other people cared enough to believe that meant absolutely nothing to you.
You were proudly seated up front in the stands for todayâs Richmond game, a beaming smile on your face as Jamie scored an equaliser just 2 minutes after the opposing team went 1-0 up.
You cheered, blowing a kiss as his eyes briefly met yours amidst his celebration.
In the chaos of him celebrating, you noticed a player shove at his side â someone on the other team who you didnât really recognise.
âYou donât deserve her,â heâd spat as he barged past him, âI bet I could show her a real good time.â
Jamie had been working so hard to control his temper on the pitch.
He knew you hated to see him so riled up, and with you around it generally did take him much more to get angry enough to kick off.
But here, he drew the line.
Being shoved, being shouted at, being fouled⌠He could handle that.
But talking about your relationship when the bloke knew absolutely nothing about you? Fuck that.
Furious, Jamie turned around and followed the player as he walked away, âGo on, say that again.â
âI said, you donât deserve her and I could show her a much better time than you, dickhead. What? Mad that Iâm right?â
Jamie snapped, elbowing the player away from him, watching the smirk fall from his face as he fell to the ground.
He was definitely exaggerating the pain he was in, but Jamie didnât care. He knelt down to his side, pretending to reach out his hand to help him up.
You were watching intently, confused at why both players seemed to keep snapping their eyes up at you between frosty exchanges.
The commentators grumbled about what was going on, too, unsure about the delay in getting back to the game because they had no idea what the provocation for this little fight even was.
As his opponent took his hand to be helped up, Jamie leaned in closer to his face with a deep-set expression of anger.
âDonât you fucking dare talk about Y/N like that âcause she wouldnât go near you mate. Fuck off, you disrespectful little prick.â
He yanked him up, and as soon as he was on his feet Jamie turned to walk away, but not before both players received a yellow card from the referee for whatever the fuck had just happened.
â
âWhat was all that about, baby?â
Your voice was soft, not accusatory. You never were, but it still hurt Jamie to have done anything that might remotely make you think badly of him.
You placed both hands on his shoulders, rubbing your thumbs over his collarbones to soothe him as your eyes twinkled up at his.
âIâm sorry I kicked off,â Jamie frowned at you as you ran your palms over his arms and looked up at him, âI wasnât gonna, but, he started talking about you and⌠I just saw red.â
You bit your lip, unsure whether to ask him what was said or whether to focus on calming him down.
âWhatever he said, it doesnât matter, J,â you pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, âIâm here. And I love you. And you still scored twice, he played like absolute shit.â
âHe did, didnât he,â he smirked for a second, before shaking his head and wrapping his arms around your waist to pull you in for a proper kiss, âThanks, babe. I love you too. I wanted to ignore him but thereâs only so many times people can tell me you deserve better before I start to wonder if theyâre right.â
As much as it hurt you to see him so vulnerable, you loved how honest he was with you. The growth youâd seen in the famously egotistical fuckboy Jamie Tartt was crazy, and to get to love him was the greatest privilege.
âTheyâre not right though, not at all,â you whispered, âYouâre Jamie fucking Tartt. And I donât just mean the player, I mean you. You make me so proud to be your girlfriend Jamie, and whatever those pricks have to say about you, about us⌠Please donât listen.â
His lashes fluttered as he blinked down at you, and you could see that he was starting to get emotional.
âWhen Iâm on the pitch, I know Iâm the best fuckinâ player there,â he shrugged, âBut when it comes to you⌠That confidence disappears. Iâve never cared this much about wanting to be good enough for someone, but, like, youâre too good for me. And everyone else can see it but you.â
You shook your head vigorously at him, moving your hands to his face desperately, âThatâs not true, Jamie. Like I said, Iâm yours and thatâs the way itâs going to stay. So youâd better start believing youâre good enough, okay? Because you are.â
He dipped his head to kiss you again, this time a much more feverish and desperate kiss.
âNow câmon, big shot,â you tried to lighten the conversation, knowing that it would only go in circles, âI think I owe my boyfriend a celebratory meal for scoring twice and defending my honour.â
You kissed his nose, pulling back from the kiss and hooking your arm in his, and as you leaned your head on his shoulder you felt his muscles relax.
âI love you.â
âI love you more.â
