Do you have any headcanons for the Outlander characters?

Hi Anon, thanks for this question! What a lovely thing I got to spend some time thinking and writing about. To quote Miriam Webster for those who may not know, a headcanon refers to something that a fan imagines to be true about a character or story even though no information supporting that belief is spelled out in the text.

So yes, definitely do! I mainly like to fill in the blank spaces or passages of time that the show does not cover fully. And because the show and source material span so much time, there are plenty of those. I love the drabbles people write for those reasons, but you asked me specifically for the characters, and my faves are Jamie and Claire so here we go.

Jamie:

Perhaps this is a more commonly discussed one, but my longstanding thoughts about his ghost that we see in the first episode. We know the ghost is Jamie at age 25 per Diana, which is about the time when Jamie fought in the battle of Culloden and had sent Claire back through the stones. We also know Jamie has "sight" and has been able to see his loved ones in the future through visions. Since Claire is from the future, I have always thought that as his sight increases, he likely could see Claire in her time and during her life before she went through the stones and met him.

He has also said countless times that his soul will find Claire's even in death, and that he would endure 200 years of purgatory in order for them to meet again. So I think that at the end of Jamie's life, he uses the knowledge of his 'sight' to send his soul and project himself to the place he knows Claire will be able to reunite with him, which is 1940's Inverness. I have always hoped that it is his appearance as a ghost that triggers the sequence of events in which Claire to goes to the stones, travels through time and meets him. So in my mind, in Jamie's death, he creates a never ending time loop that the two of them are in. (I hope that makes sense).

I also have thoughts pertaining to Jamie's childhood at Lallybroch and all of the adventures he found himself on with his older brother, Willie. They would climb the walls and venture to the furthest stretches of Lallybroch together, pretending to fight in battle or hunt. A five year age gap between the two likely meant that Jamie was often Willie's undesirable shadow, and the two undoubtably would fight.

I think the snake "Sawny" was carved by Willie as a token of respect and thanks following a scare on one of their escapades. The only snakes native to Scotland are venomous Adder snakes, and I bet Jamie saved Willie from being bit by one. To thank him, Willie carved him the snake with his nickname on the back. 'Sawny' is an abreviation or nickname of Alexander (Jamie's middle name). When Willie died of Smallpox in 1727 at age 11, Jamie was only 6. Two years later, Jamie lost his mother and younger brother Robert during the birth. It's no wonder this piece of his adolescence means so much to him and remained with him throughout his life. It was likely the fondest concrete memory he had, given to him when he had won the respect of his brother.

Claire:

I've ALWAYS wanted to have a storyline or a tidbit of information regarding Claire's parents. To me it's strange that Diana never wrote anything about them, or had Claire's character recall something substantial that her uncle might have said about them in the past. For background, Claire was born in London to Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston. We know from a small passage in Outlander that Claire looks like her mother, but I've long liked to imagine that Claire gets her fiery personality from her mother as well, who was only 32 when she died in 1923. Her mother's maiden name has Nordic/Scottish roots, while her father comes from French roots. In my head her father came from a more affluent or wealthy background, while her mother was more middle to low class.

Claire was born at the end of World War I in 1918 and I like to imagine that her parents met towards the beginning of the war (closer to 1914). At that time in England, women were beginning to fill the job positions left by men who had gone off to war, and there were countless strikes for equal pay taking place. In my mind Henry was a scholar like his brother who found himself perhaps a bit useless in his profession at the time of the war. Julia would have been in the middle of the women's rights movements and fighting for equal pay, perhaps working as bank teller or clerk. When Claire was born at the end of the war, I imagine she cut back on her hours but maintained some autonomy and retained her job she had spent so long fighting for.

I like to think the two met with a classic meet-cute, where Henry had lived a very privileged life filled with high profile connections forged through his parents and scholarly peers. Julia mistakenly finds herself among his social circle one day and completely knocks his socks off with her candor and forward ways of thinking. She challenged him, and treated him differently than any woman previous. Similar to how Jamie cannot help but adore Claire's outspoken nature, I picture Julia having that same fire and strength which Henry would and could not ignore. I'd read a book about them, I think!

These are just a few, I have PLENTY more but this would quickly become it's own novel :)

so i think the easy way to read outlander, is to view jamie fraser as straight. the man loves his wife, and his ‘experience’ with jack randall and the duke of sandringham surely confirm it? right?

well. no.

because both, are non consensual.

jamie fraser is a victim of rape & sexual harassment/assault. his outrage at what jack randall does to fergus? is that coupled with the rage of it being a child he loves like a son.

quite frankly, jamie shows no real prejudice for anyone’s sexuality or great discrimination beyond the desire and belief it should be consented to. and this is fairly progressive for a man from the 1740s.

so yes, i do believe jamie is bisexual. his preference is to women, however considering he went into marriage a virgin… he also lacks experience with anyone other than his wife in most cases.

so yeah, as such, in my canon? jamie is bisexual. the horror / persisting trauma isn’t from ‘being with a man’, it’s from the egregious and literally torturous rape he endured at the hands of jack randall.

Okay hear me out on this random yet elaborate headcanon: when Damian and Anya get older and start dating, Loid will neither pull the "overprotective dad routine" or be overtly warm and accepting of Damian. Instead, he will do a secret, third thing:

A thing I call the "James Fraser Special" or a "Hyper-Intuitive Dad Move."

So I'm not necessarily proud to admit this but yes, the idea comes from Outlander, which I sometimes watch with my mom (also I read the first book--moments of brilliance but too much of it is infuriating homophobic, racist trash imo. But whatever I digress.) At some point or other, James Fraser's adopted French son announces he's going to marry (I think?) James' friend's daughter. Jamie immediately says he doesn't approve and storms off. Claire (Jamie's wife) chases after him and asks what the fuck his problem is, and he reveals that he pretended to be against his son's relationship because he wanted them to work out. He knew them well enough to know that if they didn't have a common enemy to face together in the early stages of their relationship, the family's stressful circumstances, their youth, and their natures would drive them apart.

With Operation Strix, the telepathy, whatever will happen with Donovan Desmond (probably not good 😬), and most importantly all the lies and secrets, there will be a lot for Anya and Damian to overcome to be together. Loid, who I genuinely think does (or at least would, if he got to know him) like Damian and obviously wants his daughter to be happy, would try to find a way to make them work.

How else would a master manipulator do that, but to shape himself into exactly the obstacle and/or facilitator a young couple needs to help them realize they can still work together and trust each other?

Also he'd probably get in over his head again but he'd try anyway lmfao.

This is such a lovely comment that absolutely made my day!! I love your enthusiasm! I apologize for the delay but I’ve been steadily working on this ask, because I want to give it the attention it deserves.

Honestly, my only inspiration for this fic was general vibes😂 I’ve been reading a lot of historical romances lately, and in my American mind, Scotland is such a romanticized area of the world that is still recognizable to readers that I thought it would be fun to explore. And selfishly, I thought that Lucien would look hot in a kilt and wanted to write about that.

I’ve seen a few episodes of Outlander, but I’m more familiar with the books (at least the first two or three). I didn’t realize until very recently that maybe SJM based Lucien somewhat off of Outlander’s main man, Jamie Fraser, but I feel very smug for picking up what SJM was throwing down.

Hmm, how big is Lucien (what parts do you mean😏😏??) I imagine him tall but not excessively so—maybe 1.87 or 1.88 meters (around 6’ to 6’1 for the Americans). I headcanon Elain more on the shorter side, so Lucien doesn’t need to be huge to get that size difference we all know and love (unless you meant his dick, in that case Elain will definitely learn sooner rather than later)

My research is never ending. I start with large ideas and concepts (Scotland in the 17-18th centuries, looking over clan maps, etc.) then narrow it down as topics come up (in canon Lucien has a metal eye, but those have never really existed in our world, so when were glass eyes invented and accessible to the public? What did people in the Highlands eat and wear? Were pencils around during this time period, or was everyone writing with ink and quills?) and so on. I don’t have access anymore to Jstor for academic articles so I’m mainly confined to articles and blogs online. For those, I try to look to see if the author lists their sources for the article—if they do, I generally consider it a good enough source. It’s even better if I’m able to find a good primary source, like paintings and pamphlets, to describe something.

All that being said, if something I want to write isn’t quite historically accurate but the vibes are sexy, I’m probably gonna go with whats fun and sexy. I’m doing this for myself and for free and I’m not being graded—who cares if the colors in someone’s kilt isn’t accurate because there’s no native plants that color the people would have used as dye?

Sighing, he threw his quilt off his heated body and leaned up on his elbows to stare at his cock, a slight frown as on lips. He had hoped his body would have gotten the hint by now that it wasn't going to have any company other than his hand for a while. Apparently, his little tryst with Elain last night had convinced it otherwise.

He looked over to his window. The window was slightly ajar, and the thin, gauzy curtains framing the glass fluttered softly as the gentle breeze brought the earthy scent of the loch into Lucien’s room. The sun was out with hardly a cloud spoiling the bright blue sky overhead. It was going to be a beautiful day, and he really needed to get out of bed and begin his long list of tasks.

That could wait a few minutes, though.

On The Run (1743 ; Aged 23)

Jamie is in hiding from the British going by Jamie MacTavish, having a price over his head for a crime he didn’t commit. He lives with his uncle who is Laird of Leoch, and is sheltering Jamie from being found.

Laird of Broch Tuarach

Jamie finally returns home to become Laird at Lallybroch. He lives with his sister Jenny, brother-in-law, and nephew. Though, Jamie never lets his guard down, knowing danger is always around the corner and is worried he’s putting his family in jeopardy.

Est-ce que tu parles français? - 1745 (aged 25)

After a close call with the British, Jamie flees to France to live with his cousin. There, he runs a home as well as his cousin’s wine business while he travels for some time. Not entirely realizing it, he begins to enjoy the finer side of living and falls into step with it well. Here, Jamie is furthering the cause of the Jacobite rising.

Battle of Culloden - Could take place weeks before the battle or after.

Jamie returns to Scotland to fight against the British. Though the Scots lose the battle, Jamie gains revenge on Jack Randall even though he is taken to a jail, far from home, for being a Jacobite.

Home Again - 1765 (aged 45)

Yes, twenty years have passed. Jamie is back in Scotland and under a different name, Alexander Malcolm. Working as a printer and owning his own business in the town of Edinburgh, he lives a quiet, low life. Or at least, he tries to.

America, The Colonies - 1765 (includes season 6)

After a harrowing journey across the seas, Jamie ends up in America. North Carolina, to be precise, and settles down as best he can with his own land called Fraser’s Ridge.

You Say You Want a Revolution... - 1777 (aged 57)

Jamie is sought after to join the British during the very beginning of the Revolution, though he struggles whether to fight for them or the opposing side, to help better the future of his family. {More will be added once Part 2 of S7 comes out this November}

Through the Stones (Modern day ; Aged 25-35, depending)

Just a week before the Battle of Culloden, Jamie has accidentally gone through the stones at Craigh na Dun and wound up in the 21st century. He’s been living in Edinburgh for ten years, and though it hasn’t been easy to adjust, Jamie’s been doing his best and working as a bartender in a local pub. (If one would rather a younger modern Jamie not too long after falling through the stones, discuss with me first)

Depending on the verses, there’s much more detail in each of their stories. As for one major and significant detail: being captured and r*ped by Captain Jack Randall which happens at the end of Season 1 (this is during his time at Leoch, though transitioning into becoming Laird of Broch Tuarach), I will not write those scenes out. It was traumatizing to watch, and I could never write that horrific scene. BUT, I can and will write about his PTSD with that unfortunate life event, because I think part of that makes up the Jamie we all know and love. As far as any other details go, depending on the verse, I will be more than happy to explain to any of those who are not an Outlander fan or just haven’t a clue what it’s about in full depth if you would like to know what Jamie is internally going through. The poor man goes through A LOT in each season, so to list it all here in each verse would be too much to read lol so if you’re curious, let me know and I’d be happy to oblige!

🎁 + how would jamie react to modern day reader coming back through the stones just after Culloden and bringing him with them

Jaime would go into shock at first, now surrounded by a world completely different to his own. You would take him to a country inn to let him deal with everything before you begin to show him aspects of modern day life. It would take him a while to understand and come to terms with this brand new world that he has found himself in.

You are his lifeline throughout everything. He knows that he can count on you for any support that he might need and that if he is ever confused, he can always ask for your help. You keep him grounded and he cannot be more grateful for you.

Once he settles in and learns how to deal with everything new, he’ll ask you to talk to him about all the things that have happened since Culloden. He knows it will take a while to learn everything, but he loves it when you cuddle up and talk to him about things he could never even imagined.

You can’t help but laugh when watching Jamie work out how to use new technology. He has a habit of getting frustrated but will calm down once you show him how to do it.

There are many words that can define Jamie Fraser but the one that makes the most sense is: devout. This man can be many things, but he is a yandere who is very devoted to his darling, no matter how obsessed he is. There is nothing he wouldn't do for you and every moral he has will be cast aside for you.

Jamie was fascinated with you after meeting you and became more and more obsessed with each encounter you had. You couldn't get out of his head for some reason and he became more and more addicted to you. He yearned for you constantly and felt angry and sad when you weren't there.

You are his top priority and always will be. You'll be put on a pedestal for him, basically. He really worships you, in a not unhealthy way, and you've become the center of his world. Jamie is not that possessive, he trusts his darling, he is confident in your feelings and he knows you will never do anything to hurt him. But that doesn't mean he isn't jealous, because he is, and a jealous Fraser is a real pain in the ass. He'll be quite annoying when he's jealous and will claim your attention any way he wants. It's not uncommon for him to have nicknames for you, but if he feels threatened by someone he will call you in more affectionate ways. He will make it clear that you are with him, that you belong to him. And if that doesn't work, Jamie will make subtle threats.

Jamie's natural instinct is to be overprotective and that's not something he can let go of even if he wanted to. This man is so protective of his sweetheart that even a broken nail is cause for concern, he cares for the ones he love and he cares and love you more than anyone else. How much he loves and protects you is unmatched and almost impossible to write. You are the most important person to him and always will be, he puts you above everything and everyone and you will always be his priority. You are matchless, perfect, and even a goddess/god in his eyes.

He's a soft yandere for you, and only for you, it's really hard for him to want to hurt you, but that doesn't mean he won't, because if you cross him in any way, Jamie can and probably will punish you. He doesn't like to hurt you, he has always hated physical punishment, but if necessary, he will physically punish you. His most preferable forms of punishment are those that involve some form of sexual pleasure, it's fun to watch you sexually agonize over him. And only for him. But that could also depend on how involved he is with you because if it's in a platonic way he'll be kinder to punishing you. But don't worry, he won't leave marks on your skin, he would hate to ruin your skin with scars.

Jamie is quite gentle and soft when it comes to you, you're the only one who knows his more vulnerable side. He can be many things and some of them are truths and lies, but the reality is that nothing people say about him makes him uncomfortable, he doesn't care about them, he cares about you and what you think. Fraser really values your opinion and if you don't like a trait about him Jamie will do his best to change it to please you. This is something he has done a lot, he lives for and craves your approval. He needs it constantly. It's like a thirst and Jamie is always thirsty for you. In every sense of the word.

This man is a yandere worshiper completely, he adores everything about you: your face, your voice, your smile, your eyes and your body. Even the parts you don't like, he will assure you how perfect you are. He likes to kiss you a lot, he loves the taste of your lips and it's almost always when he's glued with your mouth on his, that is, if he's not using his mouth for other… purposes. Every part of your body must be adored and he is more than happy to fulfill that wish, you drive him crazy and he almost can't contain himself around you. Bite marks and hickeys on your body are very common, he likes to mark you. He likes to remind you that you belong to him and him alone.

To say he is a dom is an understatement, this man is completely versatile and he loves both giving and receiving. Jamie loves to feast on your juices, if given the chance he will spend hours between your legs eating you out, devouring your pussy like a starving man and in a way he is hungry for you. In a way, he's not the worst yandere you'll ever meet. He has some characteristic and dangerous traits, but he will never hurt you too much, he doesn't like to see you all hurt and bleeding. Jamie is overprotective and jealous, he will protect you from everything that is bad in the world, including yourself, but he will not protect you from himself. He's quite confused by his own feelings, but he knows he's madly obsessed with you and he doesn't intend to ever let you go. Fraser can be thought of as a selfless yandere at times, but many of his selfish actions speak to the contrary. He is very loving with you, he loves to hug you, simply having you in his arms makes him happier and more confident of his own feelings. Jamie just wants the best for you, he wants nothing but your happiness, but he feels he's the only one who can help you achieve it. You cannot run away from him, he will never allow that. The love he feels for you is greater than any notion he may have and you will never leave him. Jamie will do whatever it takes to make sure you will always be with him.

• she’s named after Claire’s mother Julia, and Jenny whose actual name is Janet

• she is 12 minutes younger than Brianna

• she isn’t particularly a morning person or a night person, she can go to bed late and wake up early, go to bed early and wake up late, or go to bed early and wake up early, it’s just rlly random

• she got into painting when she was 10 and after years of experimenting with different mediums, she found her love for oil paints. Her favourite things to paint were people and landscapes, and her paintings of sceneries were always signed and hung around the house, along with some of her paintings of her family.

• she loved wearing skirts and dresses, and her fashion style was very angel-like, with lots of lace and light florals, but she also wore clothes that were very trendy as well when she felt like it (money definitely wasn’t a problem for them with franks job and Claire’s, despite the gendered pay gap)

• her and Fergus get on so well they’re brother and sister they’re best friends they’re partners in crime (not actually tho at least atm, we’ll see what happens)

• her and Marsali also get on so well, especially since Marsali never really knew girls her own age growing up, and she misses Jodie so much, so Julie would fill the void a little, but not take Jodie’s place.

• she can’t decide on a new colour, she feels like she’s always discovering new ones even if it’s the slightest difference from one she’s seen before, but she loves green and pink and blue a lot, but she also loves orange and yellow and purple a lot. She goes in spirals like that tiny one when people ask cause she can never decide and if she does decide on one it’ll change very quickly

• like Brianna, she went to Harvard, but she studied Botany and Geology for her bachelors degree. Since Brianna was 20 when she met Roger, I’m just gonna assume she was doing a Masters degree, which requires an extra year or so, since she was still in university and changing her degree and people tend to start university at 18. I tried to find out how old people generally were when starting university in the 60s but i didn’t find anything. Assuming they did go to university at 18, Julie is done with university when she travels through the stones (we don’t see anything about Brianna graduating and I think that’s just because she changed her degree so to engineering from history so I think she wouldn’t have graduated when Julie did).

I keep seeing these posts about Jamie and Lord John from Outlander, and it occurs to me that people never seem to get this upset about characters being headcanoned as straight. Like, THE dominant interpretation of Tavington on Ao3 is that he's straight, even though the only time he even speaks to women in the film is when he addresses a mixed gender audience . . . and then he murders them all! The only thing to even hang that interpretation on is the idea that straightness is the default of humanity, and his sexuality isn't explicitly stated.

Even though I extremely disagree with that interpretation, I've found it possible to not badger people about it. Idk what's wrong with people who can't do that.

I think there's a simple answer to that: queerophobia. Those people see everyone as defaultly straight, and can't stand the idea that someone can see it differently. It's sad.
