Couldn't Compare pt. 2
Request: Yes
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x fem!reader
Fandom: Marvel
Warnings: slight TFAWS spoilers!, mentions of violence, betrayal, ANGST, sadness, slow-burn, mentions to PTSD/trauma
Word Count: 1,180
A/N: OKAY!! I'm sorry!! No happy ending!! (unless... y'all want part 3??) I'm so sorry this took so long for me to do, I know this has been requested many, many times! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy and that you like it! Feedback is always welcome and encouraged! Let me know if you'd like a part 3! Much love, thank you for all the love and support!!
Summary: Bucky's in need of help once more and like always, you're there to help him, but this time you show him some of your feelings.
PART ONE
Tumblr media
(gif not mine!)
You hadn't been planning to follow Sam and Bucky back into whatever mess they'd gotten in. You took Bucky home and figured that would be the last you would hear and see of them for a while. After the blip, you'd managed to find a fairly peaceful life outside of being an Avenger. You'd spend your days attending therapy and checking in on Peter Parker. Oddly enough, you found comfort in listening to the boy explain his newest research and findings. Besides Happy, there wasn't anyone involved with the Avengers that had been checking on the boy.
While you might not have gotten a real job nor started back up fighting crime, you immensely enjoyed your small slice of regular life. You'd spent a majority of your time baking, cooking, and donating your time at shelters. So much of your life had been spent fighting the larger threats. Yet you'd forgotten to give to those who'd been hurt in your battle for the world.
That was why, when Sam called you once again, rambling about some explosion and a dead doctor, you told him your doors were always open to him. However, when Sam showed up with Bucky standing right behind him, you could feel your chest constricting, all your progress over the past weeks fading once more. Clearly, Bucky was the one that actually needed help.
You gave Sam a soft smile as you let Bucky in, watching for a second as Sam took off into the air. Turning around, you watched as Bucky looked around your apartment, taking everything in. Without a word, you took off into the kitchen. Bucky followed you silently and sat down when you instructed.
"So... the super-soldier ends up more injured than the human," You forced a smile out, "I'd love to hear this story."
Bucky looked up at you shyly, a slight frown on his face at your gentle teasing, "He can fly away when they swing. I can't."
"Don't worry, Jamie, I'll take care of you."
Bucky could help but smile at the old nickname that slipped from your lips as you grabbed your supplies. You asked questions, and Bucky explained everything to you. He told you all about how they'd gone after some doctor that Zemo ended up killing, and then there was an explosion and lots of fighting afterward, and that was how Bucky ended up here, sitting in your kitchen and asking for your help once again.
You finish stitching his eyebrow with ease and hand him a cold compress. Bucky remains silent as you clean up all your supplies and throw away the bloody gauze. He wants to talk. Bucky wants to say anything, really, but he can't think of what to say, and slight panic fills his body at the idea of you telling him to leave now that you're done.
"It hurts, y'know."
Your voice is soft, so soft that if it wasn't for Bucky's enhanced hearing, you know he wouldn't have heard it. However, Bucky had, and he was immediately standing up, prepared to stop whatever was hurting you. Bucky watched tears fall down your cheeks as you turned.
"It hurts to be near you, yet it's also the only time I feel whole," You choked back a sob as you spoke, "I want to hate you, but I can't. It kills me to be around you, knowing you're with that blonde girl while I sit here still waiting for you!"
Bucky's blue eyes filled with guilt as your voice raised, "(Y/n)..."
"No," You snapped, "I don't want to hear anything, Bucky. We... we were gone, and then we were back and you... you betrayed me. You left and didn't speak to me. I stayed by your side through everything but the moment Steve..." You paused, choking on your tears as your body shook with the heartache, "I had just lost everyone also, and you... you left too. Then Sam's calling me for help, and you have some eye candy... as if... as if I never meant anything."
"No, (Y/n)..."
"I mean some blonde that I've never even seen before! How long did it take to find someone, huh? Two weeks? Two months? I waited for you! I know you, and there's no way you fall in love that quick, Bucky."
"(Y/n)... please."
"No! I gave you everything, and you left me for some blonde girl, and I can't even make myself hate you for it! I still love you! And I... I can't..."
"(Y/N)--"
"You're a traitor, Bucky."
Your words seemed to strike him in the heart as he froze, his head dropping. And despite the war raging in your body, the debate of whether you should help him or leave him, you felt relief finally getting to say this. You felt a weight being lifted off your shoulders as you poured your heart out to Bucky, showing him all the pain he'd put you through.
"I'm sorry."
"The worst part is that no matter how much it hurts to be near you, I never want to leave."
"I'm sorry."
A pitiful laugh broke through your crying, breaking Bucky's heart, "I know you are. I know. But... I already forgave you."
Bucky's head lifted as your fingers placed themselves under his chin. His steel-blue eyes watched you intently, gauging every tiny movement you made as you took a deep breath. You slowly stepped into his chest and wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly as tears fell silently down your cheeks. The shaking of your shoulders tore Bucky to shreds as he dropped into a chair, pulling you into his chest as you sobbed.
His arms wrapped around you like a safety blanket, encasing you in all their muscle and strength, reminding you of all the times he held you like this before. After missions, when you heard about all the people you hurt, after a stressful day of training, after being heckled in public. The list was endless, and you clutched onto his shirt tightly, allowing yourself to relish in the moment of painful silence.
After seconds, minutes, hell maybe even an hour, you weren't entirely sure. You pried yourself away from Bucky and wiped underneath your eyes. A sniffle filled the air as you walked out of the kitchen, the sound of Bucky's boots alerting you that he was following you.
The door handle was cold in your hand, a welcomed grip to reality as you pulled open the door. Keeping your eyes down, you couldn't bear to see Bucky's expression as you tried to even out your breathing.
"Goodbye, Jamie."
He left silently, the sound of his boots trotting down your porch letting you know it was safe to shut the door. Like finishing a chapter, the sound of the lock clicking tore a sob from your chest. Breaking down all over again, you sank to the floor, cries echoing throughout your empty house. And as much as it destroyed you to say goodbye to Bucky... the pain of losing him and being around him, they just couldn't compare.

But he can help himself getting a guilt-trip afterwards in the shower, seeing all the marks and bruises he has caused and branded her body with...
Guilty Pleasure
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x fem!reader
Fandom: Marvel
Warnings: SMUT!, NSFW, slight pain kink, some manhandling, explicit unprotected sex, sad/guilty Bucky
Word Count: 1,556
A/N: Hello! First, thank you for this request! I'm sorry it's quite long, but I feel like it's definitely worth it!! I really hope you enjoy this and that it's what you wanted. Feedback is always appreciated!
Summary: Things quickly get steamy when Bucky returns from a long mission, but he's later ridden with guilt from the results of your pleasure.
Tumblr media
(gif not mine!)
You were the only thing on Bucky's mind. He didn't care about anything but getting back to you. Steve was flying the Quinjet home, and Bucky was truly beginning to get annoyed at his best friend for not flying faster, even though Steve was going full speed. Steve barely had time to lower the back before Bucky was out of the plane and quickly walking to your room.
He ignored Tony telling him he needed to do a debriefing before going to you. Steve smiled, telling Tony to leave him be. After all, Steve and he had been on that damn mission for just over three weeks. And now, as Bucky bound down the hall towards your shared room, he found himself considering the idea of never going on another mission.
Your face lit up the moment the door to your room opened, and without a second thought, you flew off your bed and slammed into Bucky's chest, "Bucky!"
Bucky smiled, squeezing you tightly, "Hey doll!"
You pulled back, crashing your lips onto Bucky's as he lifted you off the ground, your legs automatically wrapping around his waist. He smiled into the kiss, deepening it as he stepped further into the room, locking the door behind him. You pulled back, slightly out of breath, and connected your foreheads.
"Someone's eager," Bucky teased, walking towards your bed.
You frowned playfully, "Don't tease me. I've missed you."
"Don't worry, doll," Bucky smirked, laying you down, "There won't be much teasing at all. I've missed you far too much to spend time teasing you."
It didn't take long for Bucky to strip you both of your clothes. His kisses were almost as hot and needy as his touch. Sloppy kisses and bites being placed all over your neck and chest. Bucky kept to his promise. He had missed you far too much to consider teasing you much at all, and he'd missed you far too much to even consider how rough he was being.
You didn't mind though. Bucky was manhandling you just enough that it wasn't unbearable, and the idea of him being this desperate and needy for you turned you on like you couldn't imagine. He slammed into you quite quickly, hardly giving you time to adjust to his massive size before he began to thrust into you. Your moans filled the entire room as he set his pace, his hands gripping your waist incredibly tight, the slight pain only adding to your pleasure.
Bucky's grunts and groans combine with your moans as his thrusts become animalistic. At this point, your sure that everyone knows exactly what you two are doing, especially with the headboard slamming into the wall the way it is. Bucky's grip on your hips tightens, and you whimper in pleasure at the feeling of Bucky fucking you into your bed.
The super-soldier's head drops to your shoulder as he nips at it, his grunts getting louder as you cry, "Feels s'good Buck!"
He groans at your words, his metal arm coming to grip your throat lightly, his flesh hand shifting to grab your left leg and hoist it up over his shoulder. The new angle elicits a string of curse words from your mouth as Bucky's pace somehow quickens, his flesh hand returning to grip your hip.
"Fuck, you're taking my cock so well, doll," Bucky groans, nipping your collarbone, "S'well. Missed you too much... way too much."
Your whines go a higher pitch as you grip Bucky's shoulders tightly, "'M gonna cum."
Bucky nods. He knows already. He can feel you clenching around him, and before he can even tell you to cum, your clenching even tighter around his cock. Your orgasm slams into you, your legs shaking slightly as Bucky fucks you through your high. Despite his efforts, it'd been three weeks, and your clenching is too much as Bucky shoots his load into you, his metal hand leaving your throat and reaching to squeeze your thigh that's still rest on his shoulder.
"Fuck," Bucky curses, his head shifting from the right side of your chest to the left side, nipping that side of your collarbone. He laughs softly as he lets down your leg, his metal arm releasing your throat, "We should probably shower now."
A giggle escaped your lips as you nodded, Bucky kissing his way from your collarbone up to your lips. You smiled as he pulled out, suppressing a soft groan as he did so. You allowed Bucky to help you up and usher you towards your bathroom. He started the shower, getting the water warm before you two slipped in.
You hummed contently at the warm feeling, knowing that no words needed to be said as Bucky grabbed the soap. Showers together were routine for you two, so you stood patiently as Bucky washed your back before gently turning you by your shoulder. Your eyes fluttered shut as you let Bucky's hands glide over your body, lathering you in soap. Bucky smile at your reaction, finally taking his eyes off your face to admire your body. Or should he say, what was left of it?
Bucky looked over your body, his eyes immediately noticing the spots on your waist and hips where bruises were quickly forming, bruises in the shapes of his hands. He noticed a similar bruise forming on the thigh he'd hoisted over his shoulder, and even various spots along your chest and collarbones had bruises forming from him biting too hard. However, what broke Bucky was the faint bruises forming around your neck. He stumbled in the shower, soap dropping from his hands as he stumbled out, desperate to give you distance from him.
Your eyes flew open at the sudden commotion, just barely seeing Bucky fleeing the bathroom with a towel around his waist. You called for him repeatedly, but he ignored you, trying to dry himself as fast as possible. You were quick to rinse and get out, wrapping a towel around your body.
When you entered your bedroom, you saw Bucky yanking on a shirt and heading towards the door, making fear spike in your chest, "James Buchanan Barnes, you will not leave me alone in this damn room again," Bucky froze at the crack in your voice. He knew if he turned around, he'd see you on the verge of tears, "I don't know what I did wrong but don't leave me alone again."
"What you did wrong!?" Bucky snapped, spinning around, "This isn't what you did. It's what I did! Look at yourself! Have you even looked in the mirror? Seen the way I... the way I scarred you, hurt you."
Bucky watched intently as your eyebrows scrunched, and you slowly turned towards the mirror in your room, opening the towel to examine your body. He waited for your face to contort into disgust, for you to turn around and scream at him to leave, but it never came. You simply examined your body before wrapping your towel back around you and turning to Bucky.
"Buck... baby, they're just bruises," You spoke softly, walking towards him.
Fear spiked within Bucky, and he quickly stumbled backward, tripping over his own feet slightly as he slammed into your door. He shook his head rapidly, making you freeze as tears rose within his eyes. The room fell silent as Bucky's chest heaved with each breath he took, tears beginning to roll down his cheeks.
"I hurt you," Bucky croaked out, "I scarred you with... with those marks, those bruises that you should never have."
"Buck," You whispered, "You didn't hurt me. It felt good. We were just caught up in the moment."
"No, no, no," Bucky cried softly, his head dropping to the floor, "Don't try to justify this, don't try to make this okay."
"You didn't mean it!" You huffed, closing the distance between you and Bucky, "You didn't mean it, Buck. I'm not mad at you. I'm not even the slightest bit upset. In fact, I'm kind of happy. I can't wait to make Sam and Steve uncomfortable with all these hickies."
A giggle left your lips, and Bucky had to fight off a smile at his favorite sound. Slowly, you cupped his cheek, drawing his gaze to you. You gently wiped away the tears, leaning up to kiss Bucky's nose with a smile.
"I love you so much, Bucky. Please don't feel guilty over something so small."
"What if I do it again?" Bucky whimpered, his cerulean orbs locking on yours, "What if I really hurt you one time?"
"Buck... baby... you won't hurt me. I trust you more than anyone, and if you went too far, I would tell you. Besides that, though, you would know if you were going too far, and I trust that you would stop."
A small smile came to Bucky's lips as he took in the fact that you were still soaking wet, wrapped in only your towel with a slight shiver, "How'd I get so lucky?"
"How did I get so lucky?" You countered, "I love you so much, Bucky."
"I love you more, doll," Bucky kissed your forehead before a smirk came over his face, "You really think we can make Steve and Sam uncomfortable with those hickies?"
"Oh definitely, Steve will wish they never found him in the ice."

Someone Like You
Request: No
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x fem!reader
Fandom: Marvel
Warnings: angst??, SADNESS!!, mentions to break-up
Word Count: 1,427
A/N: OKAY! I AM SO SO SORRY!!!! I heard this song and my mind immediately drifted to a story about your POV following a few years after Tell Me I'm A Wreck, and this was the result! I'm sorry it's so sad! I hope you guys enjoy, feedback is VERY much appreciated! Note: this takes place 4 yrs after Tell Me I'm A Wreck. (y/n/n)= your nickname
Summary: You deal with everything that's changed since Bucky and yours break up four years ago. Someone Like You by Adele.
PART ONE, PART THREE, PART FOUR, PART FIVE, PART SIX, PART SEVEN
Tumblr media
(gif not mine!)
I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn't give to you
"H-he's what?" You mumbled, your eyes wide as you stared at Sam.
"He's married, (y/n/n). He found this nice girl... he's all settled down in this nice home out by a lake," Sam spoke slowly, "He's even got a cat. It's like his dreams came true... just... not with you anymore."
"T-that's great..." You stuttered, tears welling in your eyes, "Wanda... she uh, she never mentioned anything."
Sam frowned at the crack in your voice, "Hey... I didn't come to upset you, but with Wanda being MIA for a few months now, I figured someone needed to come to see you. I thought Wanda told you, I'm sorry."
"N-no... it's fine, Sam. I just... I guess I never expected us to actually end," You sighed, your head dropping as a few tears fell, "I guess I just figured at one of these damn Stark parties, he'd gather the courage to talk to me again."
Sam frowned, listening to your sniffle as he pulled you into his chest. He could feel his heart breaking along with yours, never considering that you still loved Bucky, that you still believed it could work. Sam's arms tightened around your crying frame as he realized that it might've been a bad idea to come to visit you after all.
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light
After Sam left, you were left alone to wallow in your pain. Wanda and Pietro had gone MIA roughly four months ago now, Vision leaving with them. Of course, Wanda had attempted to keep in contact with you, calling once or twice a month to update you. It confused you on why she had left, why she'd failed to tell you about Bucky and his... his wife. It was so unlike her to withhold something this big from you, and you blamed yourself for appearing unprepared to hear this news to the telepathic girl.
And it was stupid, oh it was so, so stupid. But you felt like you quite literally couldn't control yourself. Before your mind even seemed to catch up with your body, you were driving to the address Sam had given you, a fresh batch of Bucky's favorite cookies sitting in your passenger seat, still warm.
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face
And that you'd be reminded that for me, it isn't over
It was only when you knocked on the door that your mind seemed to return to you. You panicked, contemplating the idea of setting down the cookies and running back to the car, but before you could do anything, the door was opening, and you were suddenly facing none other than Bucky Barnes.
Emotions slammed through you so quickly that you couldn't process them, leaving you to simply stare at Bucky's shocked face. He'd cut his hair, and as much as you missed his long hair, you realized that short hair suited him too. His silver arm was gone, replaced by a beautiful black and gold one, making you realize, gold suited Bucky well too.
"I uhm..." You stuttered, your face heating up, "My mom always told me it was bad luck to not give newlyweds a present... so I made these for you."
Bucky looked down to the plate of his favorite cookies in your hands. Not just his favorite cookies, but his favorite cookies made by you. He remained silent, though he couldn't deny that just the sight of them had his stomach rumbling. Memories of all the times you'd made those cookies for him flashed through his mind, and he fought off the urge to smile.
"I... Sam told me, and gave me your address," You mumbled softly, your gaze staying on Bucky, "I know it's wrong of me... to show up uninvited and unexpected but... I just, I felt I needed to do this."
Bucky nodded softly, his first sign of any emotion as he pulled the door open more, revealing his full-frame and taking the plate as you held it forward. The moment the door opened, a white cat dashed to your feet, circling them and meowing up at you. You reached down, petting the cat a few times before Bucky cleared his throat.
"Why'd you come?"
His tone was soft, so much softer than you remembered. You shrugged slightly, looking away from the man before you, your gaze landing on the lake not too far away. How'd things come to this? How did one year apart turn into four? How did the two of you brooding in your break-up lead to him moving on?
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
"Don't forget me, " I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead"
"I... wanted to wish you the best in your marriage," Your voice shook slightly, but you pressed on, "I wanted you... I didn't want you to... just... don't forget me."
Tears filled your eyes, and you didn't dare look back at the man whose property you were on, completely uninvited. You should've moved on, you thought harshly. You felt that you should've moved on long ago, accepted one of those dates the twins had relentlessly tried setting you upon. You should've tried to find someone like Bucky... but you knew that wasn't what you wanted. You didn't want someone like Bucky you just wanted Bucky.
Bucky gulped nervously, his hands gripping the plate of cookies quite tightly as he watched his cat roll at your feet. Alpine wasn't that friendly with anyone except Bucky the cat wasn't even that friendly with his wife. Bucky took a deep breath, stepping back into his house and calling for Alpine softly. He frowned at you, not missing the tear that rolled down your cheek or the way you tried to hide it. He was conflicted. He thought he was happy with his wife. He thought he'd finally moved on, but now here you were.
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead."
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
You'd bound off the steps so quickly you were surprised you hadn't fallen. You weren't sure if Bucky had closed the door or watched you leave. You just knew you had to get out of there.
Things change. That's what life is. Life doesn't stop for anyone, it keeps going and changing, but you never thought it would change so quickly. It seemed like just yesterday you were dating Bucky for the first time, slapping the super-soldier with a pillow because you insisted he "didn't know how to have fun". It was just yesterday that you were making love for the first time, talking about your future, going on adventures, and forgiving that man because you knew he was the love of your life.
Looking back, it seemed like a summer haze. Your relationship with Bucky was beautiful and warm, it was spring and winter. The breakup was autumn, slowly falling and becoming barren. But now... now was winter. Now was a cold, dark winter that would be never-ending because how could you move on from Bucky? Bucky wasn't the type of person you move on from.
You sped home, surely breaking all the speed limits and not even sure if you stopped for any stop signs as you cried your heart out. You wanted to be strong. You wanted to move on and find someone like Bucky. But there wasn't anyone like Bucky. Bucky was a once-in-a-lifetime man, a man that got away.
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
You were fairly sure that you woke up all your neighbors with how hard you slammed your door when you got home. Nothing mattered, not right now, not while you were finally grieving the loss of your relationship. How could you feel your heart breaking? The pieces were shattering so loudly that you clamped your hands over your ears, tears rolling down your cheeks even faster than before.
You were stupid. You should've given Bucky another chance. You should've caved at that stupid Stark party where you stayed with Wanda and Pietro, keeping your eyes on Bucky the entire night. You had so many regrets, and Bucky had made so many mistakes but they were just memories now.
"You wanted this," You cried softly, desperate to help yourself remember, "You wanted this, you wanted this, you wanted this!"
You slid down the door, a sob raking through your chest so loudly it scared you. You'd been miserable with Bucky, but now he was living the life you'd always talked about together, and goddammit, it was so bittersweet. It was like biting into a frosting-covered lemon, the citrus seeping into all the scars you held from your relationship with Bucky. But the sweet, sweet frosting was covering the wounds because Bucky was finally happy.
He was happy, and that had been all you'd ever wanted. So even if it meant he was happier without you, you'd accept that for him.

Tell Me I’m A Wreck
Request: No
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x fem!reader
Fandom: Marvel
Warnings: angst??, Bucky being a dick, toxic relationship, sort of an AU
Word Count: 1,356
A/N: Hello everyone! I decided to try something new! I was listening to this song after watching the new TFATWS episode, so I wrote this as a result!! I hope you guys enjoy this, once again, it's something new that I decided to try. Feedback is very much appreciated!! Also, hurray for first Bucky fic, even though it's sort of depressing haha!
Summary: Bucky looks back on your relationship together and realizes his mistakes. Tell Me I’m A Wreck by Every Avenue
PART TWO, PART THREE, PART FOUR, PART FIVE, PART SIX, PART SEVEN
Tumblr media
(gif not mine!)
I could have been easier on you
I could have been all you held onto
I know I wasn't fair
I tried my best to care about you
Bucky didn't know how to explain it. How everything had crumbled so, so quickly after three years together. Now, after multiple months away from you, he knew how badly he messed up. He recognized how it was his fault. He shouldn't have pushed you away, but the amount of love he held for you terrified him. He got lost within his mind, terrified that he would hurt you. He pushed you away relentlessly, day after day, shoving you farther and farther from him in hopes he'd save you from himself.
He tried to show his love, he tried opening up, but it'd been too late. Too much damage had already happened after two years of him consistently pushing you away. He knew he'd screwed everything up, and the chance of you and him living a long happy life was scarce to none. He tried to take care of you, ensure you were safe and happy. But how could you be happy with the way Bucky refused to allow you in while claiming he loved you?
I know I could have been a better man
But I always had to have the upper hand
I'm struggling to see the better side of me
Bucky sighed in frustration, a scream of anger leaving his mouth as he threw his beer bottle at the wall. It shattered everywhere, as he growled. He should've been better for you. Countless times he should have just stopped. Should've let you win the argument, should've let you take care of him, should've let you in.
Bucky saw himself as a monster.
He was a real monster. No, no longer was the Winter Soldier the monster. He, James Buchanan Barnes, was the monster. He hurt you so many times. How the hell could you have stayed with him for three years, three years of him pushing you away. How could you have told him repeatedly he was just trying to protect himself, that he was good, pure. Bucky truly couldn't see this good side you'd always talked about.
But I can't take all your jabs and taunts
You're pointing out my every fault
And you wonder why I walked away
But you got fed up. Anybody would get fed up when their boyfriend of three years was pushing you away as far as refusing to let you kiss him.
"You're ridiculous!" You yelped one day, your teary eyes filled with rage as you watched Bucky's back tense, "Stop pushing me away! I get that you've experienced traumatic things. We all have Buck, but don't suffer in silence!"
"I'm not," He grumbled, turning to face you.
"You are!" You snapped, "You're self-centered, you think you're protecting others by pushing them away, but you're just hurting more people! I get your pain Bucky, I get that you feel unworthy of love, and you feel you're a wreck, but damn it let me show you otherwise!"
"I'm not the wreck," Bucky snarled, "You are."
When you tell me I'm a wreck
You say that I'm a mess
How could you expect anything less?
You latched onto me
Then cried I strung you along
"She's just such a mess," Bucky grumbled to Steve directly as the group all sat around in Stark tower, "I mean she's been dragging me along for three years now as if she doesn't see she's not stable enough for a relationship."
"Weren't you the one that asked her out?" Wanda jumped into the conversation, defending you, "If you're unhappy, leave her. She's done nothing but support you."
"That's beside the point," Bucky rolled his eyes, taking another swig of his beer. He was desperate to hide his pain at the fact that you'd already left, "She's a complete wreck. She never does anything besides cling to me. She's not the girl I got with. All she does is criticize me about how I'm not good enough for her and blah, blah, blah."
But Steve saw right through his best friend's façade. Steve was overly aware of the way Bucky's grip tightened on the beer bottle, and his heart sped up. He knew Bucky was trying to project all the horrible things he'd done to you as if he was only defending himself. And Steve knew that sooner or later, Bucky was going to become the man he should've been for you, only it was too late now.
I told you when you asked
I knew this wouldn't last
At least I could be honest about that
And now you're telling everyone
How I only did you wrong
I guess you never knew me at all
You stared at Bucky with tear-stained cheeks, your packed bags at your feet, as the man across the room from you was frantically trying to fix things. You shook your head as a sob left his lips while he bolted towards you, desperate to keep you in his life, never expecting you to leave him.
"Please, (y/n)... doll... please. This is gonna work. Just give me time. I'll go to therapy. I'll fix this. This can work again."
"James," You whimpered, pulling your hands out of his, "This was never gonna last."
It was only days later that Bucky was at the small party at Stark Tower, criticizing and talking about you in a way that had the other members wondering if Bucky had ever actually met you.
Remember on my 21st birthday
You took me where we went on our first date
We stayed 'til closing time, after 4 glasses of wine
You started with a pointless argument
You said that I forgot to compliment
The dress you wore that night
That I've seen a thousand times
You smiled at Bucky softly, admiring the way his long hair framed his face. You'd suggested a few times that he should cut it, that maybe it'd help him feel farther away from the Winter Soldier and more like himself. He refused, and you couldn't say you were upset. You loved his long hair.
You sipped on your wine before speaking up, "Thank you for this, Bucky."
"Mmhm," He hmphed, downing his entire glass of wine, "Sure thing."
Your lips tugged down at his lack of attentiveness. It frustrated you. He was always this way now. Never fully there with you. Your eyes drifted down, and you remembered you were wearing the dark blue dress Bucky had got you for your birthday a few years back.
"Don't you like my dress, Buck? You haven't said anything."
"Here we go," Bucky groaned.
"What?" You snapped, "I was just asking if you noticed the dress--"
"Yea, of course, I did. I've seen it a thousand times. It's the one Steve you for Christmas."
You frowned deeply, your lips pressed together tightly as your eyes darted around the room, desperately trying to fight off tears. You wanted to tell Bucky that it was the dress he got you, for your birthday, but you took this as a signal of him having a bad day and let it slide.
But I think we just want different things
I want space, you want a diamond ring
Whatever made you think we were meant to be?
Bucky gripped his hair tightly, looking down at the small velvet-covered case that sat on your bed. He'd been so sure during your relationship that he wanted space. That he wanted you far away from him so he could ensure that you were safe. But now that you were gone, that you had been gone for multiple months, he wished he would've given you the one thing you had wanted.
He remembered all those nights you'd talk to him about the future. Asking him what kind of house he'd like, who his groomsmen would be if you ever got married. He knew you wanted to marry him, and truthfully, Bucky wanted to marry you too, but he needed space from you. He wished now, more than ever, that he would've manned up and proposed to you, because just maybe that could've fixed things.
But Bucky knew better, he knew that a perfect woman like you deserved more than a monster like him. He groaned in frustration, wondering what had made you believe that you and he could work out.
Still I see you standing there
Waiting 'round for me to fall
Girl you must be crazy
Still believing you and me belong
I guess you never knew me at all
You were gone. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into a year. You'd disappeared from Bucky's life, though he knew you were still in New York, as he often overheard Wanda talking about the time you two would spend together.
He waited patiently, figuring you would cave in. He figured his beloved doll would come back to him, that she'd always come back to him. Because for the first time since you'd gotten together, Bucky wanted to let you in. He wanted to make this relationship work. But it was too late.
It was too late when he saw you at one of Stark's much larger parties, standing happily with Wanda and Pietro. Your head was tossed back in laughter as you stood between the twins, who were laughing along with you.
Bucky was too late. And he realized at that moment, seeing you glowing in a way you should've been doing next to him. He must have been crazy forever believing that the two of you could work.

PART ONE, PART TWO, PART FOUR, PART FIVE, PART SIX, PART SEVEN
Tumblr media
(gif not mine!)
Summer after high school when we first met
We'd make out in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my 18th birthday we got matching tattoos
You weren't sure why you'd allowed Sam to drag you out of your house. After your impromptu visit to Bucky, you hadn't left your home, and that was roughly four weeks ago. Sam had brought you groceries and checked up on you, feeling that duty was his since Wanda still hadn't returned.
But anyway... this Stark party.
You hadn't been to a single one since Wanda disappeared five months ago now. But, Sam insisted you went to this party, forcing you into one of your favorite dresses and practically throwing you into his car. You weren't that nervous, you always ended up having a great time with Wanda and Pietro, and surely Sam would make sure you had a great time. That was until you two saw Bucky pull up with his new wife under his arm.
"Hey... (y/n)?" Sam called, gently trying to shake you out of the daze you were in, "Honey, come on, talk to me. I swear I didn't know."
"You okay, kid?" Tony asked, walking up to you with a frown as he watched Steve go to Bucky.
"He still has that stupid car," You chuckled suddenly, your eyes filling with tears, "When we first got together, he'd drive me all over New York in that dumb Mustang. I can't tell you how many times we made out in it. He took me to get our matching tattoos in that stupid car... and now it's her it that car."
Tony pulled you into his chest, rubbing your back, "You're right Mustangs are totally stupid. Audi's are way cooler, right Sam?"
"Totally."
Used to steal your parents' liquor and climb to the roof
Talk about our future like we had a clue
Never planned that one day I'd be losing you
It was like you could see the memory playing out in front of you.
You chuckled, stumbling with Bucky up the last stairs to the roof of the Avengers tower. It wasn't often he brought you here and stayed this late, but damn did the stars look so much better from here than at your apartment. Bucky smiled at you, holding up a bottle of Tony's favorite liquor, immediately causing a loud laugh to tumble from your lips.
"I can't believe I get to be the one to make you laugh like that," Bucky smiled, reaching out to grab your wrist and pull you to his chest, "Just you and me, for the rest of time."
You giggled, "Why don't you make it official then, Bucko? Put a ring on it, and we can get a nice big home. By some lake as you've always wanted."
"Mmm, sounds nice. Doesn't it, doll?"
You nodded, "We can get a cat! You can deny wanting one all you want, but I see the way you look at all those cats on your phone."
"Hey!" Bucky laughed, "If we get a cat, we'll need to give the little thing some kids to play with."
You nodded again, gazing up at Bucky with the biggest smile on your face, "Oh, definitely."
"So, we get married, get a nice home by a lake, a cat, some kids. We'll have to get Steve and Wanda to live close by so they can watch the kids when I want you all to myself."
A loud laugh tumbled from your lips once more as you lightly smacked Bucky's arm, "James Buchanan Barnes! That's incredibly inappropriate!"
"Don't act like you don't love it, doll."
In another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world
You pulled back from Tony's chest, the sound of Bucky calling his name making it clear to you the older man had been trying to shield you from Bucky. Sam grabbed your hand, pulling you into his side as Tony spun, holding open his arms for a 'bro hug' from Bucky.
You stood awkwardly, admiring the girl beside Bucky. How'd you get here? You bit the inside of your cheek. Your eyes flicked to the crowd as you wondered when all this had become okay. When did it become that you were no longer Bucky's girl? When did it become okay for you and Bucky to break all those promises you made? When did everything turn so incredibly bitter that you forgot all the good there was worth fighting for? When did it turn from you two against the world to you two against each other?
In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say you were
The one that got away
"Oh.. uh Sam, you didn't tell me she was coming," Bucky's shocked tone startled you as Sam squeezed your side.
"Well, you didn't tell me you were coming," Sam fired back in a playful tone.
You immediately plastered a fake smile, directing your attention to the girl beside Bucky, "Hey, I'm (y/n)."
"It's nice to meet you! I'm Chole!" The girl smiled, shaking your hand before giving Sam a quick hug.
Bucky and you locked eyes for a second, making you wonder why everyone had hidden this from you. You wanted to pull Bucky aside, tell him how incredibly sorry you were for everything, how you wanted him back, and you would make everything work this time around. You didn't want Bucky to be the one that left. You wanted Bucky to be the one you grow old with. But, you simply flashed him an all too fake smile, allowing him to pull his wife away and into Tony's party.
I was June and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other, we made a pact
Sometimes when I miss you I put those records on
"Oh god, I can't stand her," Tony groaned the moment they were out of ear's reach.
Sam rolled his eyes, "Come on, Tony. She's a nice girl."
"No," Tony groaned, "It pains me, physically pains me, to admit this... but (y/n) and Bucky, they were one of the best couples I've ever seen, up until the end. Of course, Pep and I are better, sorry Kid, but Pepper and I are like Beyonce and Jay Z. But, I mean... you two were Johnny Cash and June!"
Sam laughed loudly as you snorted, rolling your eyes, "We were pretty inseparable, despite him always being so distant after those first like six months."
"You still play those records?" Sam questioned suddenly, making you nod, "God, he made you so old school. Listening to records, sheesh! You'll be going gray soon!"
Leave it to Sam and Tony to try to make you laugh. You shook your head with a smile. You knew they'd always succeed.
Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the blues
It's time to face the music, I'm no longer your muse
"He got his tattoo removed," Sam whispered to you from his spot where you'd migrated to the bar.
You raised your eyebrows, subconsciously rubbing the tiny heart on the inside of your left wrist, "I guess it was bound to happen."
"Talk to me..."
"I hate this!" You groaned, tears welling in your eyes, "I still love him, Sam. I know that probably makes me stupid. I just... I spent so long focusing on all the bad, trying to reason with myself why the breakup was necessary. But now, I'm thinking off all the good, and how much was left to be saved," You sniffled as you wiped tears, "How much I still love him, how I want it to work out. I just... he's not mine, and I'm not his, and I'm not even the thing to make him happy anymore and..."
All this money can't buy me a time machine, no
Can't replace you with a million rings, no
I should've told you what you meant to me (whoa)
'Cause now I pay the price
Sam pulled you into his chest as a soft cry left your lips as you both sat completely unaware of Bucky right behind you two. He'd heard more than enough of your confession and now felt his own eyes welling with tears at the sight in front of him. He quickly turned, opting to go to the other bar to get Chole her drink.
Bucky knew he messed up, but he had been so sure you'd hate him for it all he tried to replace you. He realized now. Nothing could replace you. Not any amount of the money he owned, not any home, or any pets. Not even any wedding ring he put on any woman. Nothing would replace the hole that'd were left in his soul from you, and he realized now he should've taken the chance at all those Stark parties.
He should've told you what you meant to him, even if he was terrified that you were going to hate him. It was no excuse for him to avoid you, to avoid the chance of getting you back. Because now, as he ordered another woman's favorite drink instead of yours, Bucky wished he made you stay because anything was better than a life without you.
In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say you were
The one that got away
