The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a long and checkered history of letting confidential informants run wild. Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger famously used his protected status to knock off New England underworld rivals. COINTELPRO-era provocateur Gary Thomas Rowe Jr. was involved in multiple civil rights atrocities. To catch criminals and extremists, you have to play dirty.
Joshua Caleb Sutter firmly fits into this framework. A longtime occultist and neo-Nazi, Sutter became an FBI informant roughly 20 years ago after being sent to prison for trying to buy a silencer and a defaced Glock .40 pistol from an undercover fed in Philadelphia. At the time of his arrest, Sutter was living on an Aryan Nations compound in Pennsylvania. Since then, he’s earned at least $140,000 infiltrating a range of far-right organizations, most notoriously the Atomwaffen Division (AWD) starting in 2017. Details of Sutter’s involvement—which the government has yet to officially confirm—emerged in 2021 during the federal trial of AWD leader Kaleb Cole, information first revealed that August.
Being outed as a federal informant did not force Sutter into the shadows. Sutter kept publishing extremist books through his Martinet Press imprint, which helped fuel the ascent of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A), a murderous blend of Satanism and neo-fascism that is now pervasive in the global far right and has inspired violence in Russia, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and elsewhere, a WIRED investigation found. The consequences of Sutter’s virulent extreme right propaganda continue to unfold, spawning new varieties of ultraviolent terrorism and violence in the darkest corners of the internet that now involve systemic child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other forms of child abuse.
Despite this, it’s unclear what, if anything, the FBI is doing with regard to Sutter’s conduct over decades. While the FBI declined to comment on Sutter’s status as an informant, testimony from a confidential human source in the 2021 trial of Kaleb Cole, while redacting Sutter’s name, revealed his relationship with the bureau through details about his 2003 conviction on gun-related charges. A former far-right militant who also met Sutter face to face during this period also confirmed he was an FBI informant.
This spring, WIRED found evidence of Sutter’s extensive influence on and promotion of an international child abuse network that goes alternatively by “com” or “764.” Sutter’s continued involvement in the most extreme corners of the far right, which engage in homicidal violence and systematically abuse minors, raise questions about how the FBI selects their informants, how they hold them to account, and what degree of blowback the bureau is willing to tolerate in order to make cases against violent extremists.

A former Mafia hitman was sentenced to 25 years in prison Friday in the 2018 fatal prison bludgeoning of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger. Federal prisoner Fotios “Freddy” Geas was sentenced in federal court in northern West Virginia after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Prosecutors said Geas used a lock attached to a belt to repeatedly hit the 89-year-old Bulger in the head hours after he arrived at the troubled U.S. Penitentiary, Hazelton, from another lockup in Florida in October 2018. Defense attorneys disputed that characterization, saying Geas hit Bulger with his fist. Geas, 57, already was serving a life sentence for previous violent crimes. The Justice Department said last year that it would not seek the death penalty against him in Bulger’s killing. Bulger, who ran the largely Irish gang in Boston in the 1970s and ’80s, also served as an FBI informant who ratted on his gang’s main rival, according to the bureau. Bulger strongly denied ever being a government informant. Bulger became one of the nation’s most wanted fugitives after fleeing Boston in 1994 thanks to a tip from his FBI handler that he was about to be indicted. He was captured at age 81 after more than 16 years on the run and convicted in 2013 in 11 killings and dozens of other gangland crimes.

Meanwhile Damon and Ben Affleck, the man he calls his "hetero lifemate," remain as tight as ever. The two have a production company, Pearl Street Films, and Damon lets slip that they are developing a biopic about James "Whitey" Bulger, the onetime godfather of the Irish Mob in Boston, who was on the lam for sixteen years before being apprehended last June. Damon will play Bulger and Affleck will direct. But that won't be for a while yet. First Damon must finish Elysium, a sci-fi picture directed by Neill Blomkamp, who made the acclaimed District 9. Then Damon will direct himself. Beginning sometime in early 2012, he is going into preproduction on an as-yet-untitled movie he's writing with John Krasinski, of The Office. [...] "I just found writing with him really easy—like writing with Ben," Damon says. [...] DeNiro and Affleck have advised him, he says, on the challenges of directing and acting at the same time. Damon's not naive: He knows that if he sucks as a director, it will be a very public failure. "There are just too many decisions over the course of too long a time, and if you're not a truly great director, you just can't hide," he says. So why do it? "When I first started getting work, I felt like acting was the most important thing," he says. "But the more you do it, the more you realize that in the end, the director has all the power."
— From Matt Damon's interview with GQ (December 2011).

Three men accused in the 2018 prison killing of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger are due in court Monday for a plea hearing and sentencing.
The combined hearing for Fotios “Freddy” Geas, Paul J. DeCologero and Sean McKinnon is to be held in federal court in northern West Virginia.
Plea deals for the three were disclosed May 13, nearly six years after the 89-year-old Bulger was beaten to death in his cell hours after being transferred to a troubled West Virginia prison.
Geas and DeCologero are accused of repeatedly hitting Bulger in the head, and McKinnon of acting as a lookout.
According to prosecutors, DeCologero told an inmate witness that Bulger was a “snitch” and that as soon as he came into their unit, they planned to kill him. DeCologero also told an inmate that he and Geas used a belt with a lock attached to it to bludgeon him to death.
Last year the Justice Department said it would not seek the death sentence for Geas and DeCologero, who were charged with murder. All three men were charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, which carries up to a life sentence. McKinnon was also charged with making false statements to a federal agent.
Bulger, who ran the largely Irish mob in Boston in the 1970s and ’80s, became one of the nation’s most wanted fugitives after fleeing Boston in 1994. He was captured at age 81 after more than 16 years on the run and convicted in 2013 in a string of 11 killings and dozens of other gangland crimes.

Johnny Depp in Black Mass (Scott Cooper, 2015)
Cast: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, David Harbour, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll, Julianne NIcholson. Screenplay: Mark Mallouk, Jez Butterworth, based on a book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. Cinematography: Masanobu Takayanagi. Production design: Stefania Cella. Film editing: David Rosenbloom. Music: Tom Holkenborg.
Johnny Depp's cruel and icy portrayal of Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger is the best reason for seeing Black Mass. Otherwise there's not enough heft and momentum to Scott Cooper's film. It takes a fascinating story of the interrelationships between Bulger's mob, the FBI, and the government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and reduces it to a routine and often derivative gangster movie. Cooper and screenwriters Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth borrow shamelessly from GoodFellas (Martin Scorsese, 1990) in a scene in which Bulger playfully terrorizes a colleague in the same way Joe Pesci's character -- "What do you mean, I'm funny?" -- frightens Ray Liotta's Henry Hill. The film often seems overloaded with good actors -- Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Adam Scott, Julianne Nicholson -- in parts that don't give them enough to do. And while it was filmed in Boston, it misses the opportunity to capture the Boston neighborhood milieu in which Whitey, his politician brother Billy (Cumberbatch), and FBI agent John Connolly (Edgerton) grew up, something that was done to much better effect in films like Mystic River (Clint Eastwood, 2003), Gone Baby Gone (Ben Affleck, 2007), and even Good Will Hunting (Gus Van Sant, 1997). Still, the cold menace projected by Depp's Bulger is haunting, enhanced by the decision to provide the actor with ice-blue contact lenses that pierce through the shadows and give him an air of otherworldly surveillance.

The Boston Gangster
Tumblr media
Black Mass, released in 2015, is an intense biographical crime drama that unearths the notorious life of Boston’s most infamous gangster, James “Whitey” Bulger. Directed by Scott Cooper, the film is based on the critically acclaimed book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. With a star-studded cast led by Johnny Depp as Bulger, the film also features top talents like Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Kevin Bacon.
A Peek into the Plot
Set in 1975, South Boston is under the control of Whitey Bulger and his Winter Hill Gang, who run the streets with fear and violence. However, Bulger's dominance is threatened by the North End's mafia, the Angiulo Brothers. In a twist of fate, FBI agent John Connolly, an old friend of Whitey’s, returns to Boston with an unusual proposition: for Whitey to become an FBI informant in exchange for protection. Though repulsed by the idea of being a rat, Whitey agrees, using the arrangement to his advantage, expanding his criminal empire while evading the law.
As Whitey’s power grows, so does his influence over Connolly. The lines between law enforcement and crime blur, leading to catastrophic results. Connolly, blinded by loyalty, becomes entangled in Whitey’s web, pulling his FBI colleagues into corruption. What follows is a spiraling descent into violence, betrayal, and devastation as Whitey exploits his FBI connections to eliminate his enemies, while Connolly's life unravels under the weight of his actions.
The film takes viewers through Whitey’s ruthless reign, from family tragedies like the loss of his son to the betrayal of his allies. As federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak begins to close in, the once untouchable Whitey finds himself on the run, but not before destroying everything—and everyone—in his path.
From Screen to Reality
Black Mass masterfully mixes real-life events with gritty drama. The portrayal of Whitey Bulger’s manipulation of the FBI, thanks to his childhood friend Connolly, highlights the shocking depth of corruption within law enforcement during that era. The gripping performances from the cast, particularly Depp’s chilling transformation into Bulger, bring this dark chapter in Boston’s history to life.
A Critical Success
The film premiered at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival and was met with widespread acclaim for its raw portrayal of Whitey Bulger’s life. With a budget of $53 million, Black Mass went on to gross $100 million worldwide, marking it as a box office success. Depp’s performance, in particular, stood out, with many praising his intense and eerie embodiment of the infamous gangster.
The Aftermath
Black Mass doesn’t just tell a crime story—it delves into the fragile line between good and evil, loyalty and betrayal. Whitey’s eventual capture in 2011, after years on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, is a chilling reminder of the power he once held and how far the mighty can fall.
This haunting tale is a reminder of the real consequences of unchecked corruption and the lasting impact of violence on a city and its people.

This week History Homos are joined again by Dan from Nice Podcast Stupid to discuss a thoroughly Boston topic and its very History Homos implications. James "Whitey" Bulger was a Boston criminal underground legend and amassed a massive body count and rap sheet while protected by crooked FBI Agents at the local Boston office. Lesser known is the fact that while in prison in the 1950's and 60's he was subjected to CIA MK-Ultra Experiments. We investigate.

Dossier List (Adventures in Outer Space)
MGM, MUSH.
Megaman 1, was written by Alice O'Neill's arts team, to frame Whitey Bulger as "Rock Light", so Irish morgue doctors (Irish Protestants) would dump corpses on him. Now, Shaun Sans Pants, says Megaman, is a friend to all children.
MI-6, FRG.
There are five snitches on the North Seas MI-6 arrangement, to the Hanseatic League; out of Israeli nuclear development, the Duerney nuclear reactor. Only five different Munich Putsch tricks, will be victorious; with the help of James Bond's friends, the DEA (Sergeant Gutwill), James Holmes (the DC Comics "catch a rising star" project), and a mastermind cast of five villains (each of them, Will Morgan's theories, on what Dave's career is, as a corporate economist).
IRA, Irish Mafia.
The IRA, is the military representative of the Republic of Ireland, at home and abroad. But the Irish Mafia, thinks "the good book says, it's okay to make a little money". If the British Army, raises their daughter to perform a specific job, it's "daddy's dominatrix", a military buildup in Germany. But if the Irish Republican Army, sends a strongly worded letter, it's a boatload of cash and a terror attack. How do you use the standard Irish armament, books and poverty, to assault Whitey Bulger, John Gotti Jr., Stan Lee, Osama Bin Laden, and Barack Hussein Obama? Seinfeld, is the hint. Dianetics.
CIA, USMC.
The CIA is an elite field team unit, of armed and armored accountants; in a "Company", responsible for patronizing an American corporation multinational, for arming and armoring a war since Philip J. Morris and the Great War. But the USMC, thinks our stories are important, and how to live cleaner, friendlier lives; the USMC movement, "The Boy Scouts of America", and their marital Lutheran alms scheme, "The Girl Scouts of America". But my friend, Coolie-Dickinson Hospital, and my summer school program at UMass-Amherst, has a little story for you; "Secret Window", written by Stephen King and starring Johnny Depp.
Boston Mossad, State Police.
The State Police, have made an intrepid deal with the Arabs of Jewish Saudia Arabia, to decide medicines and medical treatments based on films; smart kids, drafted as cops, through movies and video games. But George W. Bush Jr. knows who you are, and he's had Secretary of State Colin Powell put Detective Costigan, on crack cocaine; "Depocate", a USMC assassin. Beware, amphetamines cause renal failure (dead kidneys); doctor's orders. The nefarious new face of medicine, college degrees of verifiable transcript's reference. Sorry, Dr. Joshua Golden, teachers just don't teach.
