Imprinted: An Epilogue
For everyone wondering what happened to James, the duckling (first part here)
The peeping from the lavatory was getting louder and Aziraphale, after having read the same sentence three times, put down his book and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Why won’t he stop?” he groaned.
“You put him in there by himself and shut the door,” Crowley explained. He was lying on the sofa with his head in Aziraphale’s lap and scrolling on his phone.
“You’re the one that told me to fill up the tub so he can swim and feel at home. He hasn’t stopped crying!”
“Maybe he’s hungry again.”
“Stop feeding him, Crowley. He’s going to burst.”
“Ducks eat all the time.” He sat up and walked toward the kitchen. “Here. I’ll give him another cracker.”
“There are no more crackers,” Aziraphale reminded him. “He ate them.”
“Why don’t you let him walk around, then?” Crowley asked. “He’s probably bored.”
There was a loud flapping noise and the sound of webbed feet splashing about, and Aziraphale sighed.
“Fine, go get him, then.”
Crowley grinned as he opened the bathroom door. “Hallo, James!” he greeted him.
The duckling flapped his wings again.
“What’s all the noise, eh? Don’t you like to swim? Trust us to adopt a duck that doesn’t like water.”
“We have not adopted him!” Aziraphale shouted from the sofa.
“Don’t listen to your mother.”
The flat was now silent and he picked up his book. He continued to read but stopped when he heard the sound of the water sloshing around again and the sound of what seemed to be happy duckling noises.
“Crowley?”
No answer.
He left his book and peeked into the bathroom.
“What...on earth?” he asked.
Crowley had stripped down to his boxers and was now sitting in the water. James was quite excited about it as he swam in fast circles around him.
“See?” the demon said. “He’s just lonely.” He looked up to find Aziraphale gone. “Angel?”
He shrugged when he got no reply. “Who needs him, eh?” he asked James, who was still circling him. “You’re a fast one!”
“Oh, Crowley.”
He looked up to find that Aziraphale was back in the door and had his mobile aimed at him. The camera shutter sound effect was going off over and over again.
“Hey, wait a minute!” Crowley yelled.
“This is the most adorable thing ever,” Aziraphale said through his giggles.
“I am not adorable! I’m a demon!”
James suddenly swam up to him and hopped onto his shoulder.
Aziraphale couldn’t stop the noise that came from him. “Ohhhhhh, now that is too precious!!”
“Stop taking pictures!”
“Fix your hair a bit, dear.”
“Bloody heavens, I never should have taught you how to use that bloody camera feature!”
“This is going to The Gram.”
“Don’t you dare, and stop calling it ‘The Gram!’“
Later that night, lying in Aziraphale’s bed, Crowley was reading the many text messages he received from The Them, Madame Tracy, and Anathema. He shook his head at every last snarky one of them.
“I want a divorce,” he muttered.
Aziraphale tutted. “We’re not even married yet.”
“Fine, I’ll marry you and then we’ll get a divorce.”
“What if I don’t agree?”
Crowley was silent as he pursed his lips. He put down his phone and looked at him. “Then I’ll run off and I’ll get full custody of James.”
Aziraphale giggled softly.
He took off his reading glasses and looked down at the tiny yellow duckling that had settled between them.
“You know he has to go back to the park tomorrow.”
Crowley slumped onto his pillow and looked up at the ceiling.
“Yeah...” he mumbled. “What if we can’t find his mother?”
“Well,” Aziraphale said as he laid down. “Maybe we can stick him with another duck family.”
Crowley sighed and turned of his lamp. “Yeah,” he said again.
“Darling.”
“Good night, angel.”
--------------------
“Where are they?” Crowley asked.
They were at the pond and scanning the banks for duck families, but no such luck.
He held James close to him as they walked.
“Surely, they haven’t migrated.”
“Oh, dear,” Aziraphale said. “They’re too young to fly right now. Let’s just keep walking.”
They did so until they reached their usual bench again and sat down.
James settled in Crowley’s lap and Aziraphale looked down at him and stroked his head.
“Are you cross with me?” he asked Crowley.
He shook his head. “Nah, angel. He doesn’t belong in a flat. Or in a book shop.”
“You always had a soft spot for young ones, my love,” Aziraphale told him. “I know that’s something you may not want to hear, but--”
“No, you’re right.” He gave James light scratches on his back. “I just hope we--”
He was interrupted by a loud quack and they looked down to see a white duck with seven other yellow ducklings.
The duck quacked again and James jumped in Crowley’s lap and flapped his tiny wings.
“Is this your mummy, then?” he asked, with small grin. “Off you go, James.”
He gently set him on the ground and James eagerly ran to his family. The other ducklings peeped loudly as they walked away.
The two watched as they trotted to the bank of the pond and jumped into the water.
Aziraphale felt Crowley’s hand grasp his and he smiled as he squeezed it.
“We did a good thing, dear,” he said.
“I know...” Crowley replied, his voice tight.
They sat for another moment to watch them swim until Crowley rose from the bench, gently tugging Aziraphale’s hand.
“Lunch?”
“Yes, that’s a good idea.”
They walked hand in hand back to the Bentley and Crowley took one last look back at the pond before saying, “I spotted a new curry place on the way here.”
“Oh, marvelous! Let’s try it.”

He’s looking more contemplative than usual, less confident in his approach, what with the sad-hangdog look setting on top of his cane. Wilson’s mouth pressed into an equally contemplative line.
“They saw the sepsis, and a collection of dead cells, as an infection and they tried to stop it from spreading…” James slid his fingers over his mouth, thinking. “And you knew it wasn’t an infection but wouldn’t tell them, or were they deliberately playing devil’s advocate from you? From where I’m sitting, this sounds like…they don’t trust your judgement.” And House wanted Wilson’s help in making that worse. He started to shake his head.

Tag game!
@notenufcaffeine, like you it’s taken me a while to decide on my list. Thanks for tagging me!
rules: list your 10 favourite female characters, one per fandom, then tag 10 people
In no particular order:
Doctor Who - Thirteenth Doctor
I adore 13. She’s clever and awkward and lonely and full of life. She has a streak of darkness that we’ve only occasionally glimpsed, and that intrigues me. I love that she has three companions, and how they show up not only her strengths but her character flaws -- like the way she trusts them to be competent right up until her terror of losing them kicks in. Casting Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor was a stroke of genius.
Dante’s Peak - Mayor Rachel Wando
You may be wondering why I picked a one-off movie character. I unabashedly love this movie, and could watch a whole series about Rachel, her kids, and Dr. Harry Dalton. I love how matter-of-fact Rachel is, getting shit done and juggling small-town politics, work, kids, and a stymied desire for companionship and support. I really like the team she makes with Harry, and how well they work together. She’s one of my all-time favourite disaster movie heroines.
Twelfth Night - Viola/Cesario
This is my favourite Shakespeare play. As I get older, I have less time for angst in general (or Orsino, tbh), but Viola’s angst is so often undercut by humour, and I adore her all the more for it. That duel. Hahaha, omg. Also, the crossdressing and genderfluidity floats my boat (so to speak ha ha).
Pride and Prejudice - Elizabeth Bennet
Lizzie!!!! So witty and flawed and clever. I love her.
Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears - Phryne Fisher
I don’t really watch TV anymore. I tend to wait and see it all on DVD or streaming or whatever, so I didn’t see all that much of Miss Fisher when it was screening on TV -- just enough to know it was a lot of fun. I went to see the movie, though, and fell in love with Phryne so much. She’s kind of awful, because she’s so wrapped up in living her best life, and that can mean she’s not always kind, and can be terribly manipulative. But that is such a breath of fresh air and I loved her for it. I think I need to go watch the whole series now; and how delightful that it’s there for me to discover. Also, her clothes!!! And her men!!!
Aliens - Ellen Ripley
I mean.
Torchwood - Dr Martha Jones
I didn’t see the later David Tennant seasons of Doctor Who, because that was around when I stopped watching TV. I’ve seen random eps, but not the whole arc. So I missed Martha Jones for the most part. I first discovered her in Torchwood, and loved her so much -- her cheekiness and spunk and the way she was just as delighted with Jack as he was with her -- that I was tempted to go back and watch her in Doctor Who. And then a friend of mine said they hated Martha, and I was like, “What?!? But why? She’s so great!” and they said her arc in Doctor Who sucked, and so I’m stuck in limbo, hesitant to watch it in case it really does suck, but still yearning for more Martha. I think that might be why she’s stuck with me so much as a character.
James Bond - M, Olivia Mansfield
Judi Dench’s M pleases me enormously. She’s such a great character. Tough as guts, from that era just before feminism really opened management career doors, and so just as much of a dinosaur as Bond is, in her own way. I’ve known women like her in real life -- the ones who had to carve themselves into something diamond-like, in order to fight their way through the ranks of all the men around them. I love the way Dench brings all of that to the screen, even when the films’writers sometimes don’t quite know how to write a woman in that role. Dench still carries it off -- complete with emotional armour, warts, war-wounds, and cleverness. She’s damaged and complex and glorious.
Princess Tutu - Duck/Tutu
An ugly duckling ballerina. My jam.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffy Summers
One of the best action heroines ever. Buffy was shrewd rather than clever, and full of grit even when struggling with depression. I tend to like characters with book-smarts because I love books myself, but I really like the way Buffy is allowed to be able and competent in different ways. She struggles not only with academics and money and her role as the Slayer, but with mental health issues (especially in season 6), and that’s what makes her so complex and interesting. Over the course of the series she comes into her own sense of self and emotional strength, and that is a journey I admire very much.
-
I’m terrible at on-tagging people. I’d love to read the top 10 female characters any of you would like to post. So consider yourself tagged if that’s something you’d like to share. Just pop my handle in tags or whatnot so I can find the post.

Haha, I’m glad! :) ~James Bond movies are okay if you like lots of action, but personally I just watch them for Q, who is hilarious and the most adorable little fluffy duckling (and brilliant computer genius) ever. And the ~banter~ omg it’s so good. (If you ever want to try them, Skyfall is the best.)

Too Many P’s by eidheann
In which there are penguins, potential Hydra bases, and pebble piles. And also Steve and Bucky.
Moosebumps by rohkeutta
Steve feels like he’s in some wild fever dream as he walks closer and says, “Hey, you all right?”
107 looks up. He looks even prettier up close, even (or especially, Steve’s mind supplies unhelpfully) with his cheeks flushed with the exercise and sweat beading on his forehead. He does look a little crazy, though.
“Huh,” 107 says, looks down Steve’s body, then up again. “I know we just met, but your dick looks like it’s getting strangled.”
Three, and Not Just Two by CoraRochester
Bucky “liberates” a Chow Chow and brings it home. This means, in no particular order: special shampoo, dog hair, googling “can dogs eat apples??”, more dog hair, and learning to share your boyfriend with the dog.
Steve’s none too quick on the uptake that it’s his dog, too.
