Eintracht Frankfurt: 2021-22 UEFA Europa League Champions
Frankfurt have won their first European trophy for 42 years after overcoming Rangers 5-4 on penalties following a pulsating 1-1 draw in the UEFA Europa League final in Seville.
The first period was a half of two halves with both sides eager to seize the upper hand. The 40-year-old Allan McGregor repelled an early effort from Daichi Kamada and made a fine fingertip save to deny Ansgar Knauff as the Eagles had the better of the opening 20 minutes, before Joe Aribo curled just wide and John Lundstram's header was tipped over by Kevin Trapp as Rangers rallied.
Frankfurt started the second half on the offensive but were rocked when Tuta lost his footing trying to react to Djibril Sow's header and Aribo raced away to calmly slide Rangers in front. Oliver Glasner's men refused to panic – a sign of confidence from a team yet to taste defeat in the competition this season – and duly equalised when Filip Kostić's low cross was prodded past McGregor by Rafael Borré.
Trapp's brilliant extra-time save Both sides continued to press for a winner in normal then extra time, but neither summoned the necessary guile or composure to break through and spare their fervent supporters the spectacle of a penalty shoot-out, Ryan Kent coming closest in the dying moments only for Trapp to produce the save of the match via an outstretched leg.
The Frankfurt goalkeeper would have the final say in the shoot-out too, saving from Aaron Ramsey to allow Borré the chance to seal the trophy for the German club and book them a first ever berth in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Hankook Player of the Match: Kevin Trapp (Frankfurt) Player of the Match: Kevin Trapp A good performance over the 90 minutes, a great save at the end of extra time to keep Frankfurt in the game and a decisive penalty save in the shoot-out. UEFA Technical Observer Panel
James Thorogood, Frankfurt reporter A historic night for Frankfurt as they pick up their first major European trophy in 42 years to become the first German side to win this competition in the Europa League era. In an emotionally charged encounter that had all the hallmarks of a nervy final between two relatively inexperienced sides, it ultimately came down to who could hold their nerve in the shoot-out.
And what better way for Frankfurt to redeem themselves for their painful semi-final loss in 2018/19 as they triumphed on spot kicks to join Chelsea and Villarreal in winning the tournament with an unbeaten record. It is a night that will live long in the memories of both fans and players.
Alex O'Henley, Rangers reporter The final brought heartbreak for Aaron Ramsey and Rangers The final brought heartbreak for Aaron Ramsey and Rangers Getty Images The cruelty and joy of penalty kicks. It wasn't to be for Rangers and ended in particular disappointment for Ramsey, whose miss proved decisive in the shoot-out. It's a case of so near, so far for the Light Blues, but they can be proud of a remarkable rollercoaster ride in which they beat two Bundesliga sides on the road to Seville.
Unfortunately, they couldn't do it a third time in the final and must now regroup for a Scottish Cup showpiece and the Champions League qualifiers next season.
Reaction Oliver Glasner, Frankfurt coach: "Unbelievable! It was the 13th game in Europe and we didn't lose one. What the guys have done today and this season, I don't have the words and I am not often lost for words."
'Proud' Glasner on Frankfurt glory Kevin Trapp, Frankfurt goalkeeper: "We believed that we could do it, but you saw we had to dig deep for this win. We never gave up, we always believed. It was the most intense experience of our lives. This is not my night. It's everyone's night. It doesn't come down to one player; it comes down to a whole team."
Djibril Sow, Frankfurt midfielder: "We beat some of the biggest teams in the world on the way to this success. We knew today was going to come down to passion and commitment. We never gave up and now we're over the moon."
Van Bronckhorst reflects on final defeat Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Rangers coach: "The players gave everything, but in the end it was a very tight game. It's a big disappointment; we were really so close to winning a trophy. When you win, you have memories that last forever – when you lose, it hurts."
James Tavernier, Rangers captain: "It's never nice to lose a game like that. I am proud of every single one of those lads in the dressing room and the journey we've been on. We just couldn't finish it off and we are all devastated."
Kenny Miller, BT Sport
"McGregor couldn't get near any of the penalties. It was an incredible standard, under severe pressure, for them to step up and execute as they did. The Rangers players have been excellent throughout their journey; they just fell short at the end. Trapp's had a big say in this game."
South American Europa League final goalscorers Key stats Frankfurt and Rangers became the 17th and 18th clubs to take part in the Europa League final. They were also the first finalists from Germany and Scotland respectively. This is the first time the Europa League has been won by a team outside of Spain or England since 2010/11, when Porto defeated Braga. Frankfurt are the first Bundesliga team to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League since 1997, when Schalke beat Inter on penalties. Aribo is the only player to have appeared on all 15 Europa League matchdays this season (13 starts, two substitute appearances). Frankfurt have scored at least one goal in each of their 13 Europa League matches this season. This was the ninth UEFA Cup/Europa League final to go to extra time since the final was changed to a one-off fixture in 1998. Five of them have now gone to penalties. Frankfurt will play in the Champions League for the first time next season – their only season in UEFA's premier club competition previous was in 1959/60, when they made it to the European Cup final. The Eagles finished unbeaten in this season's competition (W7 D6) and became only the third team to go through the campaign without a defeat – after Chelsea in 2018/19 and Villarreal last season. Line-ups Frankfurt: Trapp; Tuta (Hasebe 58), Touré, N'Dicka (Lenz 100); Knauff, Sow (Hrustic 106), Rode (Jakić 90), Kostić; Lindstrøm (Hauge 70), Kamada; Borré
Rangers: McGregor; Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey, Barišić (Roofe 117); Jack (Davis 74), Lundstram; Kent, Wright (Sakala 74, Ramsey 117), Kamara (Arfield 90); Aribo (Sands 101)

REPORT: RANGERS 5-0 HEARTS
RANGERS roared back from Wednesday’s disappointment with a terrific 5-0 defeat of Hearts at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon.
In a performance of boundless energy, determination and some real, top-class play, Alfredo Morelos netted twice and there were counters from Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield and Fashion Jr in the crushing win.
Boss Van Bronckhorst named four changes to his side for this afternoon’s Scottish Premiership match - from the team which lined-up on Wednesday, Leon Balogun, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos all came into the XI in place of Borna Barisic, Glen Kamara, Amad and Kemar Roofe.
That meant it was a back five today of Allan McGregor in goal with captain James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Balogun and Calvin Bassey in front of him.
Jack and Lundstram were joined in midfield by Joe Aribo, with Scott Arfield and Ryan Kent providing support to Morelos.
All nine players named on the bench by van Bronckhorst this afternoon are full internationals – there for him were Jon McLaughlin, Barisic, Steven Davis, Kamara, James Sands, Amad, Roofe, Fashion Jr, and for the first time, Aaron Ramsey.
Rangers were after a fast start in this one, and they had Hearts under pressure in the opening minutes with a succession of corners and lots of positive play in the visitors’ half in the opening minutes.
Kent had an effort slide just wide of the far post when he cut in from the left on the end of a fine Gers counter, while Craig Gordon showed good hands to gather from a Morelos drive from just inside the area when Jack set him up.
The Light Blues really were playing at a ferocious pace, and they hit the front on just 12 minutes with a phenomenal opener.
From the left, Calvin Bassey picked a 50-yard, curling pass into the path of Ryan Kent that took out Nathaniel Atkinson and Taylor Moore from the equation.
Kent still had work to do, however, and he delivered wonderfully to the back post for Alfredo Morelos to turn home expertly on the stretch for his 14th of the campaign.
It was just what was required for Rangers, and they kept up their high-energy showing – Aribo sending a strike wide as blue jerseys flooded forward once more.
Kent then released Morelos from halfway to scamper into space down that left again, before Morelos found Kent in the area after he made up the yards to turn Toby Sibbick inside out, but he could only fire wide of the far post with Gordon beaten.
Tavernier had a 25-yard free kick only just clear the crossbar, while Gordon gathered a Jack snapshot from the edge of the area.
Gordon then made a super save from Morelos from 18-yards to ensure it was only a single goal lead at the break – but their play certainly deserved more.
Hearts then threatened for the first time in the match within a minute of the restart. Stephen Kingsley delivered to the back post for Atkinson to volley across goal.
Bassey was then short with a header back to McGregor that Cammy Devlin nipped onto to send wide of the target, while Jack had a volley at the other end that dipped just over.
Then on 64 minutes, Gers got their richly deserved second through that man Morelos. After initially trying to thread one through for Arfield, the ball cannoned off Kingsley and back into the Colombian’s path, and from the 18-yard line, he curled a beautiful finish beyond Gordon and into the top-left corner of the net.
Morelos then could have had a hat-trick when Aribo released him to go one-on-one with Gordon, but a combination of Moore and the goalkeeper denied him.
Where Morelos couldn’t finish, sub Glen Kamara could. It was Morelos who released him through, and he sold Alex Cochrane a dummy before sitting Gordon down and finishing past him for 3-0 on 72 minutes for his second of the season.
Three minutes later, it was four, as Gers again broke the Hearts offside trap. Scott Arfield was denied initially by Gordon, but the ball ricocheted back into his path for a close-range finish for his fifth of the campaign.
That was to be his final action of the game, with Aaron Ramsey coming on for his debut to huge acclaim in his place just afterwards.
A fine block from Sibbick again denied Morelos his hat-trick, before number five arrived on 85 minutes. This time is was Kent racing into space down the right to cut the ball back for Fashion Jr’s seventh Rangers goal – albeit Ramsey was queuing up just behind too. Gordon denied Morelos in injury-time, and five is how it finished. It’s on now to Hibs back here on Wednesday night.

15 Wedding Font Pairings Made For Each Other
Between the place cards, invitations, save-the-dates and more, we realize that a lot of typography goes in to tying the knot!
We know how overwhelming it could be to plan the tiniest details of your big day, and while we cannot be much help when it coming to picking the right dress or wine tasting, we can help you avoid stress for all things font-related. When it comes to designing your own wedding stationary, sorting and sifting through tons of free fonts when you are already pressed on time, can prove to be a hassle.
Here’s a rule of thumb to narrow down your research; font pairing is all about balance. The biggest caveat of font pairing is to marry a decorative, fancy font with another decorative font. Nobody ever said “like attracts”! It prevents the eye from being directed to one focal point and makes the design appear busy. Every time you use a swirly or calligraphic font, let that be the star of the show. Choose the second font to be something innocuous that draws attention towards the main decorative font and supports it.
1. Montserrat + Great Vibes
This wedding invite font combination is a classic; a san-serif paired with a cursive font. When it comes to cursive fonts, Great Vibes affords the most viable readability, which is an indispensable feature of any good design. Its x-height, medium weight, and subtle slant allows great accessibility by employing sophisticated, elegant letterforms.
Montserrat perfectly balances out the round features of the header with its straight, uniform lines. You can tip the angle a notch with its slanted letter forms as well. This imbues an element of interest to your design, without wreaking havoc on the readability of your text.
2. Gravura + Perpetua
Penned by the British designer Phill Grimshaw, Gravura incorporates unmatched letter proportions and the perfect stroke thickness. This gorgeous font features innumerable elegant glyphs and countless ornamental end pieces to craft the perfect sentiment.
Perpetua, on the other hand, is the brain child of Eric Gill, first appearing in a limited edition of “The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity”. Though the roman typeface was created in 1925, it’s timeless and classic feel is hardly likely to go out of style anytime soon. Perpetua is said to render a “sparkle” to any block of text, making it the perfect companion to the spectacular nature of Gravura.
3. Castellar + Chopin Script
Chopin Script, Originally penned by Typographer Mediengestaltung in 2002, is one of the most contemporary fonts on our list. It’s widely recognized by its ornate and bold disposition. Castellan, on the other hand is deemed a display font, most apt for large script and headlines, due to the shaded and incised look of each letter.
Inspired by the classic Roman letters, Castellar is a sweeping love letter to classic royalty, beautifully complementing the bold audacity of Chopin Script. The font combination is perfect if Renaissance and classic is what you are seeking to bind your holy matrimony with.
4. Montserrat Light + Playfair Display
The eternal appeal of Serif fonts can be infused in your wedding invite if you opt for this mesmerizing font pairing. Playfair Display, a classic-type serif font, is recognized by the subtle transitions between its thin and thick lines.
Montserrat Light beautifully accentuates it in your wedding card design, with its uniform linearity playing off nicely and subtly with the erect structure of Playfair, without overwhelming the design. The italicized lines serve as a subheading and nuance the main font pairs, alleviating the need for a third font.
5. Montserrat + Hammersmith One
In the previous designs, we have used Montserrat in supporting roles, but remember that it fares just as perfectly in the lead. In this combination, Hammersmith takes on a bold physique, and so does its contender font; Montserrat! Inspired by the Johnston UK lettering tradition, Hammersmith One depicts the quirks of a somewhat handmade, naïve, brush written letters, in addition to dark joins between strokes.
Any other font might have competed in hierarchy or appeared overpowering, but the weight of the Hammersmith One pulls off the pairing to perfection. Together, two strong fonts stand out and appear rather classy.
6. Flaemische Kanzleischrift + Copperplate
Flaemische Kanzleischrift tips its hat off to being designed by a skillful penmen. Initially derived from hundred-year-old manuscripts and later transformed into digital form, it incorporates a sense of hand lettered traditions that infuse a feeling of prestige and elegance to any design. Copperplate Gothic on the other hand was designed in 1901 by Frederic W. Goudy. The term “Gothic” classifies the font as a sans serif. However, glyphic serifs are employed to adorn its subtle strokes.
The font has an air of Victorian display meets stone carving, making it an elegant and timeless choice for wedding invites and monograms. The subtle richness and extravagance in design of Copperplate, beautifully go well with the delicate and ornate curves of Flaemische Kanzleischrift, making for a fanciful and rich look.
7. Baskerville + Lavenderia
To herald your fairytale wedding, this font combination spells classy and contemporary in the same breath. Lavenderia is the darling of the dance here; more than a little retro and perfectly swashed. To steer clear of the outmoded “wedding invitation” style of script, the designer of Lavenderia, James Edmondson, has altered the fundamental traits of the font; the width, the x-height, and the slant of the letters.
Libre Baskerville, on the other hand, may be mostly wall flower, but it’s Clark Kent qualities don’t sabotage its good looks. Its firmness and stability is just what is needed to anchor this flighty design.
8. Nevis Bold + Parisienne
Inspired by the Bra advertisements of the 60’s, Parisienne is a casual connecting script. Its intentional irregularity and slight bounce steers it clear of becoming a more formal script font. Free spirited yet classic, its romantic swashes are tempered by the steadfast characters of Nevis Bold in this design. Nevis is an angular, strong typeface. It’s bold and assertive, but manages to preserve a friendly tone.
Nevis is strongest in all caps, while Parisienne shines in title case. When additional spacing is incorporated between letters of Nevis Bold, it is rendered almost indistinguishable from its more pricey contenders like Gotham. Give this gorgeous wedding font pairing duo a whirl if you are looking for a wedding invitation set to wow!
9. Josefin Sans + Bodoni
Bodoni is a rather modern font, characterized by completely flat serifs and a high contrast between the thin and thick strokes. The Bodoni font embodies the rational thinking of the Enlightenment, and the strength of its characters renders it easily distinguishable.
On the other hand, Josefin Sans is a vintage inspired, geometric font. The geometric styling and the unbracketed serifs has made this font popular in most kinds of typesetting situations. The duo is a vintage contemporary pair that is great for designs that are impactful and memorable, yet simple.
10. Bickham Script Pro + Dante
Released in 1997, Bickham Script is a timeless font, penned down by Richard Lipton. The font has its roots all the way back in the 18th century English handwriting, but now each letter has been given a humanist touch. Bickham has an air of affluence and elegance that would make your wedding stationary appear to have been designed by a professional scribe.
Dante, on the other hand, was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig after World War II. Since then, it has been adapted to a more digital format, apt for periodicals and magazines. The rounded elegance of Bickham provides a sharp contrast to the mechanical perfection of Dante. The breathtaking combination marries modern taste with sheer grace.
11. Josefin Sans + Josefin Slab
This font pairing is the perfect testament to the fact that you don’t need to look for love; it might be right under your nose. In this case, the perfect font pair might be right next to each other in the font menu, and we are bound to let it slip.
Josefin Slab and Josefin Sans may be from the same family, but with the right formatting of text, spacing, and ratio of sizes, the two types can nuance each other as if they’re from different font families. Incorporating typewriter style attributes, Josefin Slab is a Scandinavian style font that complements the more vintage like feel of Josefin Sans in any wedding related stationary.
12. Masterics + Caviar Dreams
Masterics is a contemporary calligraphy, imbued with a vintage feel due to its elegant touch and moving baseline. Caviar dreams, on the other hand, is characterized by the unconventional shapes of its letters; shapes that stay clear of those classic renditions, allowing Caviar Dreams a unique identity altogether.
Its congruent letter spacing is a blessing for the eye, and seems to be binding the design together.
13. Feel Script + Modern No. 20
Feel Script is based off an older font which was created originally for Intertype. Most of the letters in the font were sampled originally from the vintage American magazine ads and later translated in to the digital form needed today. Feel Script comes with potent features and a more feminine legacy.
Modern No. 20, on the other hand is deemed a title face, apt for magazine covers and headlines. This modern serif, designed by Stephenson Blake, is a commendable typographical shorthand for refinement and quality. The digital version works impeccably in body copy, showering each word with equal importance without shouting. No other font can be a better masculine counterpart to our delicate Feel Script; a match made in heaven!
14. Anonymous Pro + Mr. Dafoe
Distinct calligraphic fonts like Mr. Dafoe should prudently be used across short lines, so that they don’t make the design appear cluttered and busy. By blowing up the headline size, it was used as the central design element in the wedding invite shown above.
The secondary font, Anonymous Pro has been given the role of a contrasting font; it grabs attention and complements the bold and swift strokes of the main font while sitting in the background.
15. Lato + Vidaloka
Akin to Bodoni, Vidaloka is a modern-type serif font, only a bit wider and thicker set than the former, and characterized by sloped terminals and curlified drops. If your design incorporates bold illustrative elements, it must be complemented with a strong headline font, otherwise the text would be lost somewhere in the invite.
Due to its high contrast, Vidaloka works best for short blocks of text. The simplicity and lightness of the complementary warm-feeling font, Lato, softens the design. Lato, Polish for “summer”, feels very unassuming and modest when set at small sizes in body copy.

Rangers out Europa League after Leverkusen loss
Moussa Diaby raced obvious of James Tavernier to manufacture with aplomb on the initiate of the 2d half of
Bayer Leverkusen ended Rangers’ 13-month Europa League hasten from the first qualifying spherical to the last 16 with a simple preserve halt in Germany.
Main 3-1 from the first leg at Ibrox on 12 March, Peter Bosz’s aspect had been frequently ever timid in an empty BayArena.
Kai Havertz hit the bar, slid a shot extensive, and had an effort saved however it used to be Moussa Diaby’s alert flee and manufacture that broke the deadlock.
The Germans now face Inter Milan in Monday’s quarter-closing in Dusseldorf.
Response & because it came about
Rangers – with Brandon Barker initiating sooner than Ianis Hagi – regarded to danger the crew that executed fifth in the Bundesliga on the break. Nevertheless alternatives had been scarce.
A heavy contact by Alfredo Morelos spurned an early opening, and it used to be 21-year-broken-down German world Havertz who went closest in the first half of, clipping Allan McGregor’s crossbar with an angled snapshot and sliding a shot narrowly extensive when one on one with the Rangers goalkeeper.
Leverkusen, playing their first match since shedding the German Cup closing to Bayern Munich on 4 July, had been tidy in possession and threatened with balls thru Rangers’ central defence.
Had it not been for a Filip Helander block from Florian Wirtz’s shot after a four-on-three attack, Rangers would have trailed on the break.
Diaby broke the stalemate in 51 minutes when he scampered obvious of James Tavernier and on to Charles Aranguiz ball sooner than finishing high previous McGregor.
The old goalkeeper weak his left foot to save beautifully from Havertz soon after sooner than Rangers’ easiest likelihood – Connor Goldson having a header cleared off the road by Edmond Tapsoba.
That used to be as genuine because it bought for Gerrard’s aspect, though, as a campaign that started with a preserve halt over St Joseph’s in Gibraltar on 9 July last year fizzled out.
Man of the match – Charles Aranguiz
The Chile midfielder (number 20) scored in the first leg at Ibrox and prompted Rangers additional distress alongside with his energy, tricky tackling and his ideal pass for Diaby’s impartial. He also stung McGregor’s fingers with a bulleted header from eight yards, though any impartial don’t have stood owing to an earlier defective
What did we be taught?
The two-impartial deficit meant development to the last eight used to be continuously going to be a colossal reveal. Gerrard had hoped the streak of Brandon Barker and Ryan Kent could danger Leverkusen, however the Germans’ passing used to be too slick and no Rangers participant could impose himself ample to change the course of the tie.
In-ask striker Morelos might have performed his last game for Rangers. He scored six of his crew’s 13 targets in the marathon campaign, however in Germany he supplied few glimpses of his earlier hazard. Gerrard will list new strikers Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten in his 2020/21 Europa League squad, however funds raised from a sale of Morelos might perhaps be properly spent on including thrust and creativity to the midfield.
Alfredo Morelos’s performances in the Europa League have helped to attract interest in him however he had a forgettable evening in Leverkusen
Rangers competed admirably in the match in opposition to groups from Poland, Holland and Portugal however came unstuck in opposition to the crew that executed fifth in the Bundesliga, exhibiting the energy of one amongst Europe’s top leagues.
What did they recount?
Rangers supervisor Steven Gerrard (talking to BT Sport): “We’re upset with the final result. I manufacture not mediate we stumbled on our level or efficiency to give it a genuine proceed tonight. Primarily most likely the greatest aspect won the game and the most simple aspect struggle thru. There’s plenty we are in a position to toughen on and plenty we are in a position to work on transferring ahead and now we have stumbled on a level tonight to strive for. Confidently in the future we are in a position to salvage to that level.”
Match stats

Leverkusen have won four consecutive Europa League games – their easiest flee in the competition since February 1995. It is the first time have reached the last eight since 2007-08.

MATCH REPORT: RANGERS 1-0 LIVINGSTON
RANGERS overcame a wild night of Glaswegian weather and a stuffy Livingston side to record a very hard-earned three points in the Scottish Premiership tonight.
Substitute Scott Arfield’s goal 15 minutes from time was the difference for Gers on a night where they had to dig deep to take the victory.
From the side which faced Aberdeen at Pittodrie eight days ago, tonight’s Rangers starting XI boasted three changes.
Fashion Jr, Cedric Itten and Alex Lowry for a first start all came into the side in place of the injured Ianis Hagi, Alfredo Morelos, who is on international duty with Colombia and the suspended Ryan Kent.
That meant it was a back five of Allan McGregor in goal with captain James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic in front of him. Glen Kamara and James Sands, who wins a first Ibrox appearance, were joined in the middle of the park by Lowry while Fashion Jr and Scott Wright provided support to Itten.
It was Lowry who was to have the first effort after just three minutes. Fashion Jr made a fine run with the ball across the 18-yard line before laying off for the 18 year-old whose low shot was well held by Stryjek.
Livi were proving to be typically tough to break down, however, despite the Light Blues enjoying a huge amount of possession in and around the visitors’ box.
Itten came close to turning home a drilled Lowry cross across the 18-yard box, before Jack Fitzwater made an excellent block on the line to prevent Wright netting from 20-yards when Gers opened Livi up on the 25-minute mark.
Itten again came close to netting another Lowry cross, this time after he showed outstanding skill to work the angle for the cross from the left, and just after, Goldson headed a Tavernier corner over the bar.
Strykek made a fine save from Fashion Jr at the end of a fluent move from Gers, while Goldson volleyed over this time on the end of a Barisic corner.
Gers began the second half on top once again, and Itten headed an inviting Tavernier cross from the right just over the bar, while Fashion Jr could only find the arms of Stryjek when he was picked out by Tavernier.
Tavernier himself had a header wide from a Barisic cross, while sub Kemar Roofe couldn’t bury a Fashion Jr ball as the home side continued to push.
Strykek was to make a fine save from Fashion Jr when he hit one at the end of a brilliant run from midfield before finally, on 75 minutes, the breakthrough arrived.
It looked like it was going to take something special tonight, and sub Scott Arfield provided it. He made his trademark late run into the area to meet a brilliant Barisic cutback, but with Stryjek right in front of him, he was forced into a quite brilliant finish, flicking it over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The Historic Sports Car Club will organise one of the UK’s most prominent historic racing festivals of the season at this weekend’s Oulton Park Gold Cup (29-31 August).
From a very full 21-race weekend, stand-outs will include two races for Formula Junior to mark 60 years of the category at Oulton Park. To celebrate this landmark, the famous Gold Cup trophy will be presented to the aggregate winner of the Formula Junior races.
The man to beat in the double-header for the FJHRA/HSCC Silverline Historic Formula Junior Championship is undoubtedly Cam Jackson in his superb Brabham BT2 after a double win at Brands Hatch. In fact, prolific winner Jackson will be bidding for a clean sweep of six wins in three cars this weekend. His chief rival, as at Brands, will be former Formula 3000 racer Mark Shaw in his Brabham BT6.
From the capacity grid, a strong front-engined field will deliver a race within a race and leading contenders will include Justin Fleming and Iain Rowley in Lola Mk2s and Mallory Park winner Jonathon Hughes (Terrier Mk4).
In the HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship Jackson will continue his bid to win a third straight title in three different cars: this year is the unfashionable March 709. At Brands, Linton Stutley took the fight to Jackson in his Royale RP3 and two more mighty contests are likely. Joining the fray is rapid youngster Horatio Fitz-Simon who joins fellow front-runner Pierre Livingstone in the Speedsport squad, while Matt Wrigley, Rob Wainwright and Danny Stanzl all have podium ambitions.
The HSCC’s Dunlop Saloon Car Cup builds on the former Super Touring Trophy to broaden the range of eligible cars. New on the grid will be experienced historic touring car racer Simon Garrad in his newly-prepared Nissan Skyline R32. After selling his Super Touring Renault Laguna to Germany, Garrad commissioned local engineering ace Ric Wood to build him a Skyline for use in the DSCC and this will be the car’s first race weekend.
Mark Wright is an established front-runner in his Ford Sierra RS500, BMW M3s are entered for Mark Smith and Nicholas Bartlett, while former BTCC racer Jason Hughes will be a pacesetter in his Super Touring Vauxhall Vectra.
Some of the most spectacular single-seaters of a generation will deliver the glory in two races for the HSCC’s Aurora Series, with a good contingent of Formula 2 cars. Matt Wrigley will be the benchmark in his March 782 and up against him will be another March 782 in the hands of F2 newcomer Brian Morris. This is the ex-Ghinzani car coming back to racing after a long lay-off.
Running within the Formula Atlantic class will be Bolton’s Callum Grant on his debut race weekend with his March 79B and his pace should be good despite the power disadvantage to the 2-litre F2 cars.
The Historic Road Sports Championship is typified by sporting competition from large and varied grids. Setting the recent pace has been current champion Kevin Kivlochan in his stunning AC Cobra. Kivlochan hoped to carry on where he left off at Brands last month but knew that the return to the grid of the Lotus Elan of John Davison was going to present a real challenge. Sure enough, Davison won narrowly at Brands and now that battle will be rejoined at Oulton Park.
No less than six Morgan Plus 8s will be aiming to get into the action and it is Richard Plant who could head this squadron of Malvern’s finest. From the smaller-engined cars, look out for the Ginetta of Mark Godfrey and the Elan of Jonathan Rose, while Nigel Griffiths brings another AC Cobra to the mix.
The HSCC 70s Road Sports Championship is one of the club’s core championships and has been delivering great value racing for competitors for more than 25 years. The man they have to beat is double champion Jeremy Clark who made his intentions of completing a hat-trick clear by winning the belated season-opener at Brands Hatch in mid-July.
Heading the challengers to Clark is Kevin Kivlochan, who switches to his Morgan Plus 8 for the 70s race, and he will be tough to contain at Oulton Park. Meanwhile, Dave Karaskas, another driver with wide-ranging experience, was a major threat to Clark at Brands Hatch in his TVR 3000M.
The HSCC Guards Trophy is one of the weekend’s longer racer with a 40-munute enduro featuring mandatory pit-stops and optional driver changes. At least seven cars from the Chevron B6 and B8 range are due on the grid and several of them are potential race winners.
Last time out, a mid-race safety car set up a storming finish as father and son Westie and Sam Mitchell scored a memorable debut win in their B8. Elder son Ben is due to share with dad at Oulton but they have plenty of rivals including two of the cars that were hunting them down in the closing stages at Brands Hatch.
The hard-charging Andy Newall now has the B6 that scored many wins over three decades with Michael Schryver, while single-seater and GT ace Michael Lyons again teams up with former BTCC star Anthony Reid in a rare Lenham. John Spiers (TVR Griffiths) and John Davison (Lotus Elan 26R) head the GT pack, while the field is graced by a rare outing for the stunning Lotus 47 of James Claridge.
More single-seaters from the 1970s and early 1980s will contest two races for the HSCC Classic Formula 3 Championship and URS Classic Formula Ford 2000 Series.
Topping the F3 entry will be Brands winners Andrew Smith (March 783) and young Benn Tilley (March 743). Each took a win at Brands Hatch and Smith had the edge on pace in Kent. Ranged against the Marches will be a gaggle of Ralts, notably the RT3 of former champion Gaius Ghinn and the RT1 of Keith White.
Topping the URS FF2000 pack is another young ace, Ben Stiles in his Van Diemen RF82. Leading the chase of Stiles will be Benn Simms, Anthony Hancock and Andrew Smith, not to be confused with the other Andrew Smith on the grid!
Monday is a busy day for contenders in the HSCC Historic Touring Car Championship with a qualifying session and two races. Peter Hallford flies the stars and stripes in his Mustang but will face a ferocious challenge from a gaggle of potent Lotus Cortinas. Notably, local ace and leading modern GT racer Jon Minshaw joins the fray in a Lotus Cortina and will surely be a major contender.
Joining Minshaw in the Cortina pack are Mike Gardiner, Richard Belcher and Roger Stanford and this quartet of cars is sure to give the rumbling Mustang a hard time. Mixing it with the Cortinas should be reigning champion Bob Bullen in one of five Ford Anglias in the field. From the ranks of the smaller-engined cars will come Mini racers Roger Godfrey and Barry Sime, while heading the Imp pack will be the Singer Chamois of Steve Platts.
For sheer spectacle in historic racing, the HSCC Thundersports series takes some beating and the weekend will deliver a wonderfully varied field of sports-racing and GT cars for a pair of races.
Two cars stand out at the head of the entry and both are sensational crowd pleasers from the days of the mighty Can-Am sports-racing cars. Winner of the first race at Brands Hatch was the awesome McLaren M8F of Dean Forward and the 850bhp monster will be tough to beat at Oulton Park. Meanwhile, the driver of Richard Dodkins’ equally huge March 717 is yet to be finally confirmed but a year ago Calum Lockie made it fly.
From the ranks of the 2-litre cars come a gaggle of rapid contenders, topped by the racing return of the famous Chevron B26 ‘chocolate drop’ now in the hands of John Emberson. The B23 of James Claridge and the Osella PA3 of John Spiers are other podium contenders while Mike Fry (Lola T86/90) tops the Sports 2000 division.
Monday’s action includes four Formula Ford races and two of them are for the Classic Formula 1600 Championship. The shortened season kicked off at the Brands Hatch last month and now an excellent grid will gather for rounds three and four at Oulton Park.
Just as he did in Formula Junior, Cam Jackson started his season with a perfect double in his Van Diemen RF80 and he heads to Oulton Park in pursuit of a total of six wins in three different cars.
Out to stop the Jackson steamroller is Formula Ford veteran Rick Morris (Royale RP29), along with rising stars Jordan Harrison (Royale RP21), Samuel Harrison (Royale RP29) and Henry Chart (Van Diemen RF81). Meanwhile, pacesetter Mike Gardiner (Crossle 32F) should be a major threat to Jackson.
The Dunlop Historic Trophy for Pre ’66 Jaguars will be a special one-hour race during the Gold Cup weekend, with mandatory pit stops and the option of two drivers.
Inevitably, the faster E-types will set the overall pace at the head of the field and an intriguing contest is in prospect as Jon Minshaw and his son Jack race against each other. They have previously shared E-types in longer racer and Jack has shown tremendous form given his modest experience. Now he will go head-to-head with dad (in two of dad’s cars) as the third generation of racing Minshaw starts to make its mark.
Other leading E-types include those of John Spiers, Martin Melling and Jason (brother of Jon) Minshaw, Jamie Boot and Jonathan Hughes. Away from the E-type ranks, Richard and Tom Butterfield and Glenn Pearson/Peter Dorlin will battle in Mk1 Saloons and Rick Willmott represents the XK

Plastering kent
The term Louis refers to the name of 18 French Monarchs who reigned from 1300 to the French Revolution. The Louis Mantelpiece should more rightly be called a Louis revival mantelpiece as it was the product of the 19th century when French architects and interior decorators sought to produce styles, which mimicked the type of fireplace which was popular during the reigns of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI. In reality the fireplaces of this era were a lot more elaborate than the revival designs, which were made in France and England during the Victorian era. A typical Louis revival projected around 9 inches from the wall. The front was flat and box like with a wide rectangular opening. The designs were more graceful than the British marble fireplace of the era and were often made by Italian craftsmen with extra detail and finishing undertaken by French artisans.
The revival Louis XV surrounds have graceful curves and the designs which are popular today are much more likely to be from this origin. Louis XVI fireplaces are square and much more masculine and could be mistaken for many traditional English designs which have been popular for 200 years or more. The small and feminine Louis XV Pompadour has probably been the most successful of all the Louis designs.
Georgian
The Georgian era spanned the years 1714 to 1820, although the latter period is more correctly called Regency. It was during this time that many of today's stately homes were Looking for a cheap plasterer in Kent? being built or remodelled as the landed aristocracy flourished. Inigo Jones, an architect during the previous century, was the inspiration for the early Georgian period up to 1760. His pattern books were available to landed gentry throughout the country and, filled with designs incorporating elements from Greek mythology, they inspired designer's like William Kent to provide fireplaces which formed a voluptuous centrepiece to grace grand rooms.
The history of the fireplace now falls conveniently into two halves. Immense, ornate designs characterised the earlier part, while the latter half saw mantelpieces with a more subtle, classical influence.
In middle class households designs were altogether simpler - faux imitations of marble or expensive hardwoods replaced the real thing. More reserved, and cheaper, fireplaces would also be seen in the less important rooms of stately homes indicating that the pockets of even the richest landowners were not limitless! These designs did not percolate down at all to the farmers and yeomen who made up the majority of house owners. Their fireplaces were often the inglenook designs with large wooden lintel that we see in thatched cottages today.
The second half of the century is, without doubt the age of Robert Adam and the fireplaces that bear his name. With his brother James, Robert Adam produced pattern books covering all aspects of architecture but it is probably for the fireplace that he is best known. Adam was a master of detail - his designs, although smaller and less extravagant than were common in the previous fifty years, included beautifully finished detail, almost all taken from classical mythology. This could include a gold-leaf Etruscan motif or even a Wedgwood ceramic plaque.
Important rooms featured designs in fine white statuary marble embellished with swags, ribbons, lyres and urns, whilst less important rooms, and the vast emerging middle class, would be supplied by scaled down copies of these designs in a variety of imitation designs and materials. In the never-ending change that is furnishing fashion, the designs became more classical and less ornate in the dying years of the Georgian period and influences, such as the Chinoiserie (Chinese influenced design) favoured by the Prince Regent, George IV, became more evident. In many ways this period was the heyday of the fireplace, the design dimensions and features still copied in a myriad of imitations for today's market.
Regency
Like every décor trend over the last four hundred years the Regency period cannot be seen in isolation. In fact, it is incorporates elements and inter relates with trends, social differences and politics both before and after the period. Regency fireplaces tended to be much less elaborate than those of designers such of Robert Adam. Gone were the small inset pastoral scenes so beloved of the mid 18th century aristocracy. In their place came very rectilinear designs with the typical reeded leg. The leg itself might be flat with the reeding as an inset or even in the form of single or double Greek columns apparently supporting the fireplace header. The reeded panel might be taken across the header but other designs included twin parallel lines, Acanthus leaves or other Greek images - Medusa's head or Roman triumph images were also popular.
Marble was a popular material for fireplaces although, at times, supplies from Italy, Spain and Portugal were blockaded by the Napoleonic wars. Statuary marble (the variety used for sculpting statues) was preferred, although its cost tended to limit its use to the main, public rooms. Other 'reception' and 'retiring' might have fireplaces in faux marble, manufactured in wood or toughened plaster and painted, by highly skilled but low paid artisans, to resemble marble.
In France fireplace style had developed separately from that of Britain. During the French Revolution, many of the extravagant chimneypieces installed throughout the reigns of Louis XIV, XV and XVI were ripped out and shipped abroad. In their place came fireplaces, still influenced by the empires of antiquity but with less decoration and grander mantelshelves than examples within the UK. With France's close relationship with the fledgling USA this influence can also be seen in New England homes of the period including the White House (which is only white because the Brits burnt it in 1812 and it had to be repainted - white!).
Regency influence has remained popular to this day. Many town houses from this era survive in London although the largest houses were demolished for their land during the late Victorian housing boom. Where Regency houses had been stripped of their original fireplaces by subsequent generations keen to modernise their homes, modern reproductions have been used to fill the gaps and recreate at least some of the splendour of that period. Indeed, the simpler design of Regency fireplaces has proved easier to reproduce than the elaborate splendour of its predecessors which are regarded as 'over the top' by the present generations.
