Evony isn’t a Marie Sue ok she isn’t perfect SHES A SATANITS! n she has problemz she’s depressed 4 godz sake!
“YOU ARE NOT FIT TO BE THE PRINCIPAL ANY LONGER!” yelled Rumbridge. “YOU ARE TOO OLD AND YOUR ALZHEIMERS IS DANGEROUS! YOU MUST RETRY OR VOLDEMORT WILL KILL YOUR STUDENTS!” “Very well.” Dumbledore said angrily. “Butt we cannot do this. We can’t close the school. There is only one person who is capable of killing Voldemort and she is in the school. And her name is..........................Enony Darkness Dementia Raven Way.”
“Okay you can go now, see ya cunt” said Proffesor Sinister. “Bye bitch.” I said waving.
“Oh fuck it!” Vampire shouted angrily. He4 started to cry sadly. “What fucking dick did that!” “Sire are dads have been shot!” Draco said while we wipped some tears from his white face. “Enoby had a vision in a dreem.”
Suddenly dumblydore flew in on his broomstuck and started shredding at us angrily. “NO TALKING IN THE HALLS!” he had short blonde hair and was wearing a polo shirt from Amrikan ogle outfitters. “STUPID GOFFS!” satan rolled his eyes “his so mean to us goffs and punks just becos we’re in slytherine and we’re not preps.” I turned around angrily. “actually i fink mebe its becos ur da barke lord.”

I Had the Craziest Dream ~ Arthur Fleck x Reader
summary: arthur has a hard time convincing himself that you are real and not just in his head. a date with you proves otherwise
warnings: none? brief mentions of nudity
word count: 1,358
notes: finally finished this piece. the summary is really crappy, but I wasn’t quite sure what else to put. The ending is meh. I was inspired by the song “I Had the Craziest Dream” by Harry James and his Orchestra and vocals by Helen Forrest. Here’s the song if you want to listen to it. This is written with a female love interest in mind. I hope you enjoy :)
Tumblr media
Arthur was convinced you weren’t real. He had visions of angels resembling you before you had even met. And yet, here you were.
Your hair was spread on your pillow like the sun’s rays. Your mouth slightly agape as you snoozed. Arthur found you most beautiful at your most vulnerable. You were reminiscent of a Renaissance marble sculpture: delicate and exquisite. A goddess, in simple terms. He had to resist the urge to kiss you. He didn’t want to wake you. Arthur grabbed his journal off the nightstand next to him. Perhaps he would sketch your soft, bare body bathing in the sunlight that shined through the curtains.
Flipping through his journal, Arthur glanced at his past entries and sketches. Dark words filled the majority of pages. Disturbing pornographic images, whether drawn by him or pasted from nudie magazines, were glued randomly throughout. The occasional black holes, made by repetitive anger-filled pen strokes, were found scribbled over top journal entries or a porn model’s face. As he got closer to a blank page, he spotted an entry titled ‘Beutiful Girl’. He smiled to himself. This was his first entry about you.
You had met in the lobby downstairs months ago. You had just gotten off work, Arthur had guessed, and were standing in front of the elevator. Your arms were crossed in frustration, rightfully so. The building was dilapidated, built in ancient times it seemed. The elevator was taking longer than usual. You were tapping your foot impatiently. Your hair was tousled from the wind. Arthur waited alongside you.
You looked to him and shook your head. “Can you believe this place?” you said in disbelief. “I may have to start taking the stairs.”
Arthur couldn’t say much. He was struck by your beauty. Your limpid eyes were the first feature he noticed. Bright and clear, sparkling like daylights’ reflection on a calm body of water. Your lips looked plush, alluring. Arthur snapped himself out of his daydream and managed to croak out, “Yeah, it’s awful.”
Your heavenly lips formed a soft smile and Arthur’s heart skipped a beat. The ding of the elevator interrupted his thoughts. You both get on together, standing on opposite sides. “Which floor?” you asked, pressing the number 8.
“8,” Arthur said shyly.
“Hey, me too!” you grinned. “We’re practically neighbors.”
Arthur thought his heart would burst out of his chest. Someone was being polite to him, interacting with him positively. To Arthur, it didn’t seem like you were doing it just to be nice either. Your smile was unlike any other he had received in his life. The only word he could describe it was “warm”.
The doors opened to the 8th floor and you stepped out. You looked over your shoulder and made eye contact with Arthur. “See ya around, stranger,” you softly spoke with a wink.
“Bye,” Arthur spoke softly. You made a right down the hallway, and he made a left. He raced to his apartment with a pounding in his chest. He rushed to his journal after slamming the door shut. He flipped it open to the first empty page and began to write.
Beutiful Girl
I just met the most beutiful girl. I don’t no her name. All I no is that she is very nice and prety. She is the nicest person I hav met in a long time. She smild at me! And we liv on the same floor. I hope she is reel.
He saw you again, and again, and again. He found out what your name was. It was the prettiest name he had ever heard. You laughed at his jokes. You showed that you cared about his personal life. He didn’t know if his mind was playing tricks on him or if you were truly real. Someone as gorgeous and kind as you just didn’t exist, right?
He had his first dream about you. He barely slept, let alone had dreams. When he awoke, he rolled out of bed and scribbled in his journal.
I Had the Crazyest Dreem
Y/N was in my dreem. My first dream I’ve had in a long time. We wer dancing to Harry James and Glenn Miller. She smild at me. She playd with my hair. She was in love with me. I kissd her and she kissd me back. I want to kiss her so bad. I want to dance with her so bad. I still do not no if she is reel or not. If she is reel, I want to touch her and hold her and kiss her. How long must I wate until I no if she is reel? I hope my dreem comes tru.
Arthur’s dream did indeed come true. He gained some much needed confidence and invited you to one of his gigs at Pogo’s. You accepted. You thought his jokes were sweet, mostly cheesy. Afterwards, he took you out to a diner. It was late, after midnight. You were one of the few couples still out and about on a Tuesday night. Arthur made you laugh some more with a few jokes he had hidden from his routine.
You stared intensely at him, your eyes peering from above your cup of tea that touched your lips. He sucked on the end of his cigarette, his cheeks hollowing. His eyes met yours, a cloud of smoke leaving his lips. You reached your hand out and caressed his wrist that rested on the table. Arthur tensed up slightly, but eased when you stroked small circles into his worn skin.
“Arthur, thank you for a great night. I’ve really enjoyed myself,” you smiled.
Arthur grinned, holding back the tears that almost brimmed his eyes. “I have too, Y/N.”
Walking back home, you held hands and shared sweet side glances. You made it back to your building on Anderson Avenue. You squeezed his hand as you rode the elevator together. His cheeks flushed pink and you smiled cheekily. Arthur walked you to your room first. You put his arms around him, resting your head on his shoulder. You could feel Arthur was hesitant on what to do. No one had ever hugged him before besides his mother on occasion. He rested his arms around your waist and pulled your chest flush against his. His cheek laid on the top of your head.
He had been waiting for this moment. He could feel your body heat radiating, your heart beating softly. You breathed in the fresh scent of your hair. How wonderful it felt to finally hold you.
“Arthur?” he heard you murmur from his shoulder.
“Yes?” he asked softly.
He felt your head move so he lifted his cheek. You gazed at him, your hands tracing his spine. “Can I… kiss you?” you asked him.
Arthur was speechless. You wanted to kiss him. To kiss you would make his day, his week, his year, his whole life. This would be his first kiss. That was something you hadn’t discovered yet. He was too embarrassed to tell you yet.
Arthur stammered. “Y-yeah. Y/N, y-you can kiss me whenever you want.”
You giggled, pursing your lips and planting them on his. His first instinct was to hold your face in his hands. His thumbs stroked your cheekbones as he kissed back. You hummed into the kiss, clearly enjoying yourself. Your fingers danced up his back and tangled into his hair. Arthur smiled as his lips brushed against yours. You broke away for air, your eyes still shut. You bit your bottom lip as you found his eyes. They were large and puppy-dog like, almost pleading with you to kiss him again. You granted his wish.
A soft touch halted his memory. You were upright in bed now, brushing his hair away from the nape of his neck. “Good morning, darling,” you whispered, your hot breath giving him goosebumps. You peppered his neck in kisses. “What are you up to?”
Arthur closed the journal with a chuckle. “Just reading some old dreams I had.”
“Oh, yeah?” you enthused. “Do you have a favorite dream?”
Arthur’s gaze locked with yours. “You.”

Athlitech Ballon Soldes
Un bain 14 mile run le lundi m’a rappelé que j’ai besoin de commencer à prendre au sérieux l’hydratation plus maintenant que le temps se réchauffe
Ballons De Basket
. Concepts jordan 6 og instapump fury og sold out.

Note
hi so I didn't know who to ask but in my psych class we're learning about adolescent psychology, & there was this unit on developing interest in relationships. It went way into detail on how the brain changes during that time, which was interesting, but ofc my gay ass couldn't relate. at the end all it said was 'it's different for homosexuals.' I guess I'm wondering if you know of any way to learn about psychology relating to LGBT people? srsly im thirsty for anything in academia I can relate to
(same psych anon) that was a pretty specific question so I guess like do you have any info or know of any links/ websites/places to learn about lgbt history and lives and stuff like that in an academic way? bc I love school & learning but I’ve always wanted to learn more about myself and people like me, but they never teach that in schools.
Oh my gosh SO MANY THINGS! Okay, so, the psych stuff is pretty outside of my knowledge but I asked my gf (she does the science in this relationship while my gay ass just reads a whole lot of books), and she recommends Helen Fisher and looking at the researchers at the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality or the Kinsey Institute, as well as The Sage Encyclopedia of LGBTQ Studies (it’s an online resource a lot of universities subscribe to). But I’d also say that as far as thinking about developmental narratives, LGBTQ memoirs are a great place to start, especially since so many of them go through their own experiences of having to confront this heteronormative, cis-centric narrative that just doesn’t fit them and their lives.
So some good queer history authors are: John D’Emilio (comprehensive, if a bit male-centric), Lillian Faderman (writing all about lesbian history, including more recent history; very well-respected; she’s got some issues in her scholarship that by no means discount it as a whole, but I’m happy to talk more about if you want), Michael Bronski (his Queer History of the United States is really accessible), George Chauncey (it’s just of NYC, but still fun), Estelle B. Freedman, Foucault (though it’s not quite “history,” it’s a kind of history meets theory of regimes of power and how sexuality got tied up in that), Martha Vicinus (I adore her), Valerie Traub (goes all the way back to the early modern period), and so many others who really focus more on niche history, so I won’t list them here. There are some web resources, but I know a lot of them are databases that are subscription-based. I’ll see what I can’t dig up in the next couple of days as far as free websites. I know they exist; it’s just a matter of having the time to look…
Okay, you didn’t specifically say you were interested in literature but bc I taught literature and think it’s a great way to learn about the history of a group, I’m gonna list some anyway and you can feel free to disregard!
Patricia Highsmith, The Price of Salt (or Carol, depends on the year it was printed) – you can also check out the movie! I find the two to be complementary (the book gives you Therese’s POV almost exclusively, whereas the movie shows much more of Carol’s story)
Alison Bechdel, Fun Home is her graphic novel/memoir that’s really excellent, but the comic strip that sort of launched her as a public persona (at least within the lesbian community) was Dykes to Watch Out For, quite a bit of which is available for free online
Henry James, The Bostonians – one of the first recognizable depictions of a queer female character in literature (not really…I’d trouble that as a professor, but that’s how it gets taught in general, and it was one of the first books where even contemporary reviewers were quick to note that there was something “wrong” or “morbid,” which was 19th C. code for what would come to be understood as lesbian sexuality, about Olive Chancellor) – free online, though it’s James at his most….Jamesian, which means it’s not that accessible
The poetry of Emily Dickinson! It’s all free online. There’s a ton of it, though much of it isn’t obviously queer
James Baldwin, Giovanni’s Room – gets into bisexual identity in a way a lot of works don’t do; on the sadder side…fair warning
Virginia Woolf! Especially Orlando or Mrs. Dalloway – the former has been called “the longest and most charming love-letter in literature” (to Woolf’s longtime friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West) and deals with the fluidity of gender and time; the latter has quite a few flashbacks to the brief childhood romance of the protagonist and her friend. Both of them are great, but Woolf, as a modernist, can have a writing style that’s difficult to get into at first (for instance, time really isn’t stable or linear, which is something I adore about her, but definitely takes some getting used to). They’re both available free online through Project Gutenberg
Radclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness – it’s a classic, in the sense that it’s one of those books people sort of expect you to have read if you do lesbian literature. It’s certainly an interesting story and told well, but it’s not even close to a happy ending and is rather conciliatory to prevailing norms (though even still it was taken to the courts under the  obscenity laws) - free online, though!
Sarah Waters – a contemporary novelist who writes almost all historical fiction about queer women! Some of her stories are better known (e.g. Tipping the Velvet), but they’re pretty much all great. Varying degrees of angst, but definitely an accessible read
Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts – sort of experimental in form (it’s fiction with footnotes!); it deals with a lesbian woman coming to terms with her partner’s transition and her own identity during the process
E.M. Forster, Maurice – even though it was first drafted in the 1910s, Forster edited it throughout his life, and, given the subject matter, which was also autobiographical, and the prevailing attitudes at the time, the book was only published posthumously in the 70s
Colette’s Claudine series – it’s long (multi-volume) but sort of a classic – they’re all old enough to be free online, though the English translation is harder to come by
Eileen Myles – lesbian poet and novelist – I’d recommend Inferno but some of her poetry is free online
Rita Mae Brown – Rubyfruit Jungle and Oranges Are not the Only Fruit are both quite good, though, especially the latter deals with religiously-motivated homophobia, so I know at least my girlfriend, who dealt with a lot of that from her family, opted not to read it for her own mental health.
Tony Kushner, Angels in America – this two-part play deals with the AIDS crisis in America – it’s been turned into a TV miniseries, a Broadway play, and a movie, some of which are available online
Really anything by David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs – both are gay authors who deal a lot with short stories (a ton of memoir/autobiographical stuff) – the former is a bit funnier, but they both have enough sarcasm and dry wit even in dark situations to make them fast reads
Alan Ginsburg’s poetry
Walt Whitman’s poetry (though it can be really fucking racist)
Binyavanga Wainaina, One Day I Will Write About This Place – does deal with issues of sexual abuse as a warning
Anything by Amber Hollibaugh (she writes a lot about class and butch/femme dynamics – quite a bit of her stuff has been scanned and uploaded online)
Michelle Tea – was a slam poet; recovering alcoholic; fantastically funny and talented author and delightful human being if you ever get the chance to meet her or go to one of her readings
Randy Shilts, And the Band Played On – more a work of investigative journalism than anything, the work is a stunning indictment of the indifference of the US government during some of the worst years of the AIDS crisis, but it also provides a good bit of gay history
Terry Galloway Mean Little Deaf Queer – deals with one woman’s experience of losing her hearing and navigating the world and the Deaf and deaf communities as a once-hearing person – she’s sort of acerbic and always funny;
Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex – grapples with intersex identity in a way that’s still far too rare in literature
Theodore Winthrop, Cecil Dreem – just rediscovered about two years ago, this is one of the few pretty happy gay novels from the nineteenth century! Free online!
Leslie Feinberg, Stone Butch Blues – pretty clear from the title, but deals with a butch character’s struggles with gender identity (takes T to pass for a while, but then gets alienated from the lesbian community; eventually stops taking T, but still struggles with what that means for her) – Feinberg’s wife made it free online for everyone after Feinberg’s death (the book had a limited print run, which made finding copies both hard and expensive)
Harvey Fierstein, Torch Song Trilogy – trilogy later adapted for film about an effeminate gay man (who also performs as a drag queen) and his life and family
Oscar Wilde – his novels aren’t explicitly gay, but they often dance around it thematically, at least; his heartbreaking letter, De Profundis, which he wrote to his lover while imprisoned for “gross indecency,” is available online
Anything by Dorothy Alison
Audre Lorde, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name - great as a memoir and a cultural history
There’s so many more but this is so my jam I suspect I’ve already rambled too long
If you’re interested in film, here are a few:
Paris Is Burning (a film about drag ball culture in NYC)
Fire – Deepa Mehta (it’s on YouTube in the US)
Boys Don’t Cry – there is a lot of homophobia and transphobia in the film, so it’s definitely one you’ll want to be in the right mindset to watch (I, for one, have only watched it once)
But I’m a Cheerleader – over-the-top mockumentary-esque film that satirizes conversion therapy and the Christian “documentaries” that claimed to showcase their successes (RuPaul is in it as well)
Desert Hearts – one of the earliest films to leave open the possibility of a happy ending for the lesbian couple
Hedwig and the Angry Itch – deals with gender identity and feelings of not belonging (also a fabulous musical)
Philadelphia – about one man’s experience of discrimination while dying of AIDS
There are plenty of lighter films, but I figure these tend to also talk more seriously about some issues as well
I don’t know if anyone but me made it to the end of this post, but there’s also so much fun queer theory out there that I won’t get into here, but I’m always up for giving more recommendations!

Tumblr media
Keyboard legend Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch) returns to the show as Beatles Month rolls on.
Benmont unpacks the multi-layered genius of Beatles for Sale opening track 'No Reply', explores why the Beatles R'n'B roots are at the heart of their greatness, recalls how his first exposure to the band scared him as a kid, why the Heartbreakers avoided playing Beatles covers, wonders about his friend Ryan Adams' recent discovery of the Beatles albums and talks about his relationship with Ringo Starr across 20+ years of playing on each other's records.

Sleep Is the New Status Symbol
Tumblr media
Once we would brag of not needing very much of it. Now deep slumber is a coveted state achieved with gadgets, apps, gizmos and classes.
“Sleep today is a measure of success, a skill to be cultivated and nourished.” TIM ROBBINS
by PENELOPE GREEN, April 8 2017
At M.I.T.’s Media Lab, the digital futurist playground, David Rose is investigating swaddling, bedtime stories and hammocks, as well as lavender oil and cocoons. Mr. Rose, a researcher, an inventor-entrepreneur and the author of “Enchanted Objects: Design, Human Desire and the Internet of Things,” and his colleagues have been road-testing weighted blankets to induce a swaddling sensation and listening to recordings of Icelandic fairy tales — all research into an ideal sleep environment that may culminate in a nap pod, or, as he said, “some new furniture form.”
“For me, it’s a swinging bed on a screened porch in northwestern Wisconsin,” he said. “You can hear the loons and the wind through the fir trees, and there’s the weight of 10 blankets on top of me because it’s a cold night. We’re trying a bunch of interventions.”
Meanwhile, at the University of California, Berkeley, Matthew P. Walker, a professor of neuroscience and psychology and the director of the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory there, is working on direct current stimulation as a cure for sleeplessness in the aging brain. Dr. Walker is also sifting through the millions of hours of human sleep data he has received from Sense, a delicately lovely polycarbonate globe designed to look like the National Stadium in Beijing that measures air quality and other intangibles in your bedroom, then suggests tweaks to help you sleep better.
“I’ve got a mission,” he said. “I want to reunite humanity with the sleep it is so bereft of.” Sense is the first product made by Hello Inc., a technology company started by James Proud, a British entrepreneur, for which Dr. Walker is the chief scientist.
In Paris, Hugo Mercier, a computer science engineer, has invested in sound waves. He has raised over $10 million to create a headband that uses them to induce sleep. The product, called Dreem, has been beta-tested on 500 people (out of a pool of 6,500 applicants, Mr. Mercier said) and will be ready for sale this summer.
That is when Ben Olsen, an Australian entrepreneur, hopes to introduce Thim, a gadget you wear on your finger that uses sound to startle you awake every three minutes for an hour, just before you go to sleep. Sleep disruptions, apparently, can cure sleep disruption (and Mr. Olsen, like all good sleep entrepreneurs, has the research to prove it). It is his second sleep contraption. His first, the Re-Timer, a pair of goggles fitted with tiny green-blue lights that shine back into your eyes, aims to reset your body’s clock. He said that since 2012, he had sold 30,000 pairs in 40 countries.
For years, studies upon studies have shown how bad sleep weakens the immune system, impairs learning and memory, contributes to depression and other mood and mental disorders, as well as obesity, diabetes, cancer and an early death. (Sedated sleep — hello Ambien — has been shown to be as deleterious as poor sleep.)
Tumblr media
A Deep Rest “class” at Inscape, a meditation studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. ALEX WELSH FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls sleeplessness a public health concern. Good sleep helps brain plasticity, studies in mice have shown; poor sleep will make you fat and sad, and then will kill you. It is also expensive: Last year, the RAND Corporation published a study that calculated the business loss of poor sleep in the United States at $411 billion — a gross domestic product loss of 2.28 percent.
Companies now fight “presenteeism,” a neologism that describes the lackluster performance of foggy-brained, sleep-deprived employees, with sleep programs like Sleepio, an online sleep coach, and sleep fairs, like the one hosted last month in Manhattan by Nancy H. Rothstein, director of Circadian Corporate Sleep Programs and otherwise known as the Sleep Ambassador, for LinkedIn. For the last few years, Ms. Rothstein has been designing sleep education and training programs for a number of Fortune 500 companies. At the LinkedIn sleep fair, she taught attendees how to make a bed (use hospital corners, please) and gave out analog alarm clocks. (It was her former husband’s snoring, she said, that led her to a career as a sleep evangelist.)
If sleep used to be the new sex, as Marian Salzman, a trend spotter and chief executive of Havas PR North America, proclaimed 10 years ago, today it is a measure of success — a skill to be cultivated and nourished — as a “human potential enhancer,” as one West Coast entrepreneur told me, and life extender.
“Sleep is the single most effective thing you can do to reset your brain and body,” Dr. Walker of U.C. Berkeley said. “We have a saying in medicine: What gets measured, gets managed.”
Sleep entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley and beyond have poured into the sleep space, as branders like to say — a $32 billion market in 2012 — formerly inhabited by old-style mattress and pharmaceutical companies.
“I can see sleep being another weapon in competitive parenting and career-building,” Ms. Salzman said. “If you want your child to succeed, do you have to buy them these sleep devices? Sleep is personal, it’s class, not mass, and now the sleep industry is based on technical services, customized for me. It’s a bizarre marriage of high tech and low tech. Chamomile tea is going to have a resurgence, as the antithesis to the whole pharma thing.”
The familiar paradigm of success used to center on the narrative of the short sleeper: Corporate titans and world leaders — like Martha Stewart and our last two presidents — counted abbreviated rest as proof of their prowess. It turns out that short sleepers, as they are known, may have a genetic mutation, as Arianna Huffington pointed out in her 2016 book, “The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night at a Time.”
Tumblr media
Sense, a delicately lovely polycarbonate globe designed to look like the National Stadium in Beijing that measures air quality and other intangibles in your bedroom, and then suggests tweaks to help you sleep better.
(It’s worth noting that George W. Bush, formerly a sleep outlier among his presidential peers for clocking in around nine hours of nightly shut-eye, along with a daily nap, is newly popular.)
The Army has proclaimed sleep a pillar of peak soldier performance. Jeff Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon, who used to take a sleeping bag to work when he was a lowly computer programmer, has said that his eight hours of sleep each night were good for his stockholders. Ms. Huffington’s new company, Thrive Global, whose first-round investors include the internet entrepreneur Sean Parker and the venture capital firm Greycroft Partners, is working with Accenture, JP Morgan Chase and Uber, among other companies, on antiburnout programming, which educates their employees on the importance of sleep. Aetna, the health care company, is paying its workers up to $500 a year if they can prove they have slept for seven hours or more for 20 days in a row.
But the growing pile of apps, gizmos and gurus — some from unlikely corners — has led to “pandemonium in the bedroom,” Ms. Rothstein said.
In 2015, the actor Jeff Bridges made a spoken-word album, “Dreaming With Jeff,” a project for Squarespace, that reached No. 2 on Billboard’s New Age chart and raised $280,000 for the No Kid Hungry campaign, for which he is the national spokesman. He collaborated with Keefus Ciancia, the composer and music producer, on a truly weird collection of quasi-bedtime stories, musings about death and also a humming song, with Mr. Bridges’s familiar gruff voice and all manner of ambient sounds that many listeners found more alarming than sleep-inducing.
“I don’t know where this is leading,” Mr. Bridges said the other day, “but I’m steeping myself in the subject. We’re working on something called Sleep Club, which will be sort of a hub for all things sleep related.”
“Dreaming With Jeff” made me anxious, as did “Sleep With Me,” a podcast by Drew Ackerman, a gravelly voiced librarian in San Francisco, whose “boring bedtime stories” are designed to cure insomnia and are downloaded at a rate of 1.3 million a month, as The New Yorker reported last year. I’m more drawn to the thousands of “songs” in Spotify’s Sleep Sound Library, particularly “full gutters” and “office air-conditioners,” and I have a white noise machine. But recently, desperately, I craved a more substantial intervention, perhaps a cure for the 3 a.m. fretting that has plagued me for years.
Mr. Mercier sent me his Dreem headset, a weighty crown of rubber and wire that he warned would be a tad uncomfortable. The finished product, about $400, he said, will be much lighter and slimmer. But it wasn’t the heft of the thing that had me pulling it off each night. It skeeved me out that it was reading — and interfering with — my brain waves, a process I would rather not outsource.
Tumblr media
The Re-Timer, a pair of goggles fitted with tiny green-blue lights that shine back into your eyes, and aims to reset your body’s clock.
I was just as wary of the Re-Timer goggles, $299, which make for a goofy/spooky selfie in a darkened room. My eye sockets glowed a deep fluorescent green, and terrified the cat.
The Ghost Pillow, $85, has “patent-pending thermo-sensitivity technology” designed to keep your head cool. It is wildly comfy, but when I read what it is made from, a polyurethane foam, I lost sleep. I bought a Good Night Light LED Sleep bulb, $28, which comes with its own “patented technology” to support your body’s melatonin production. I can’t tell if that’s what happened, but since the bulb is too dim for my middle-aged eyes, I struggled to read my go-to sleep aid, a worn copy of “The Pursuit of Love,” by Nancy Mitford, and knocked off a good half-hour earlier than usual. I was up again at 3 a.m., however, as my new Sense pod alerted me the next day, through an app on my phone. And again at 5 a.m., when the cat swatted the pod off the night stand and it glowed red in protest. “There was a noise disturbance,” the app explained.
My so-called sleep summary, as provided by Sense, was both compelling and off-putting. Why is my air quality “not ideal”? And how comfortable am I sharing my sleep habits with a Silicon Valley start-up?
Ms. Rothstein, the sleep ambassador, is less bothered by privacy concerns than by the temptation to wakefulness that phone interfaces pose. And nearly every gizmo seemed to have one.
“I’d like to have a survey done to show how many people are also reading their texts while they’re tracking their sleep,” Ms. Rothstein said. “If you want to improve your sleep, you have to make some changes. Your Fitbit and your Apple Watch are not going to do it for you. We’ve lost the simplicity of sleep. All this writing, all these websites, all this stuff. I’m thinking, Just sleep. I want to say: ‘Shh. Make it dark, quiet and cool. Take a bath.’”
Ms. Rothstein taught me her relaxation recipe, a practice that mixed gratitude with body awareness and breathing. Start with your toes, she said, and thank your body parts for their hard work. (My favorite: “Knees, I know it’s not always easy for you. You can rest now.”)
Still, the best sleep I’ve had in weeks cost $22, and lasted 33 minutes. It was a Deep Rest “class” at Inscape, a meditation studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan designed by Winka Dubbeldam, the sought-after Dutch architect, to evoke the temple at Burning Man, and other esoteric spaces, and created by Khajak Keledjian, a founder, with his brother, Haro, of Intermix, which they sold to the Gap for $130 million in 2013.
Mr. Keledjian, a meditator, aims to make the practice both secular and modern: a “mindful luxury,” he said. Though there are human “facilitators” in each class, who gently touch the feet of snoring attendees if they get too loud, the practice is guided by a recording made by an Australian female member of Mr. Keledjian’s company. “We call her ‘Skye,’” he said. It was lunchtime on a rainy Tuesday, and I settled onto a soft mat outfitted with a bolster, a pillow and a cozy fleece blanket. “Skye” urged me to stay awake, and then delivered a script like Ms. Rothstein’s, in mellifluous antipodean tones. I drifted once or twice, and from the muffled snorts of the other attendees, they did too. That night, I slept until dawn.
