Games
closed starter for: @cursedvessels
based on: “don’t play games with me. don’t ever think you’re capable of that.” - cursedvessels, from james for whosoever your heart desires :p
...
"And what will happen if I am capable?" Where resentment may have blossomed, instead there was mere pondering. As if she had yet to discern whether she herself was capable of such a feat and what it might bring. "Would you cut me loose?" A flash reflects in her gaze then, a silent challenge, so at odds with the idle thrumming of nails against the table's edge.
Trust. A sentiment seldom shared in depth, least of all with the man in her company. While many took offense once finding a lack of trust, in her eyes it seemed to be his preference. A preference for distance in ways she couldn't quite place much in the same way she couldn't deny- to herself at least, curiosity. Whether for better or worse, however, this nosiness came muddled with unyielding frustrations.
Combing her fingers through dark tresses she managed a sigh, "Is there something I'm accused of doing, at least? Or is this merely a courtesy warning?"

I discuss Patti Labelle's solo career and I continue to be highly scathing about her works despite some of them being, well, quite great. Still, I might reserve most of my criticism for Patti Labelle's 90's opus but I think the reason for that might be that her 80's could've been hard to top during the time I mentioned, so she settled into a pattern in the latter period. She made many records in the vein of Flame, which are nice, i.e. there's nothing wrong with them, yet this is also a problem. She and her collaborators are professional on them, which could be another issue. I agree, should she pull of something else instead? A good question to add here would be – would she be even allowed to do that? If not, why so?

Comfortability. A concept synonymous with partnership thus lending predictability. Both of which Françoise had begun to see progress in only to have it start anew at the sight of a tourniquet. Swallowing softly, she observes how he applies the tourniquet with practiced grace, unable to discern whether any lettering marks the vial's contents. Are the tremors...truly withdrawals? A past consideration although she had found it unkind to make such an immediate assumption in lieu of a medical condition.
Water off a duck's back. Mind your manners and let the clouds roll overhead. Water off a duck's back. Mind your manners and let the clouds roll overhead... A mantra replayed in the fringes of thought amidst his biting response. A seldom used tool as of late, yet paranoia whispers it may see a revival in Mister Wright's presence. Thankfully, it had yet to fail her- until he spoke of not needing her help. Had it not been for her decision to wait him out, she would have scoffed. Have you gone mental? You were struggling to find a secretary before I ever walked in. What I offer is the willingness to work with you at all. You condescending, arrogant...If only she could step out and scream or give her bag a swift kick. Or even better, his bag.
Hazel hues flicker from the wad of cash sitting precariously within reach to meet his gaze, a series of inquiries and concerns flitting through her mind. Why are you harboring sizable amounts of cash in your office? Where did these funds come from? With this much at your disposal it begs the question of why you haven't been able to retain your employees. Well- in theory. Narrowing her eyes she couldn't help the inkling this was a gamble of sorts, wherein the house had invariably raised the hand in hopes of snuffing out her bluff. Unfortunately for Mister Wright, however, Françoise was not particularly well versed in bluffing. "Deal." If it becomes unbearable I can simply leave. A rather cruel thought though it's sentiment was quickly snuffed out in knowing it simply wasn't her nature. No. For better or worse, she was bound by principles her colleagues often referred to as 'antiquated'.
Sliding the pile of bills to the far end of the desk, she put a pin in her monetary questions to instead focus on a far more pressing issue at hand. "Now as your partner," Her palms came to rest on the tabletop, Françoise leaning down to better study his expressions, "what is in the syringe?" If one were to have come upon them at that very moment they likely would have thought little of her question, her tone was calm and even- no different from if she had asked about vials of paint. Upon close inspection, however, they may have noticed the stern, unyielding stare fixed on him. The notion of substance use, whether medicinal or recreational, was not a foreign concept in her world- in fact it was quite common, BUT she was quite firm in her desire to know what her company was using for precautions sake.
A little smirk quirks up James' lips when she finally replies, insists she won't be his secretary anymore. A roll of his eyes and he shrugs, starting to move to wave his hand at her dismissively. If she had nothing to offer him, then she could just leave. One less interesting case to deal with, but maybe that was a good thing since clearly his body was crying out for rest.
Instead, I will be your partner.
Eyes flash up to view her again, the smirk dissipating once again and a brow quirking at her as if to ask come again? like maybe he'd misheard her. Partner. An insane word for anyone to ever use when likening themselves to James. Their partner, she thought would be easier than secretary? They had a partner once...Once. Never again. Of course, by the sound of it she wanted to keep the secretary job with added tasks and a couple of mild benefits he could stand to uphold if he really had to. They eye her for a moment curiously as she opens the box and finally settles it on their desk. They stand there for a moment, unyielding, arms folded over their chest in stubborn defiance.
Finally, he's giving a small hum and reaching to snatch the box off the desk, trailing his way around to the other side and flopping down in his chair like his body weighed 100 tons. More silence as they pull out a syringe from the box, a strip of rubber, and a sealed hypodermic needle. The box is tossed onto the desk as shaking hands roll up his sleeve, wrap the tourniquet just above the bend of their elbow. A small vial removed from the box and set on the desk. Their gaze lifts to view Françoise again finally, void of emotion.
"And for that you want me to solve this case of yours?" Jaw shifts. "You came to me, remember. Without payment." A beat, letting that sink in. "But. If you'd...rather be my partner than my secretary, you'd have more than just off hours to worry about." A quirked brow. "What you offer me is based on some kind of ridiculous assumption that I need your help, which is not the case. I've managed thus far on my own, albeit a bit poorly organized, so what makes you think you bring something new to the table that I can't get from anyone else?" There's a sparkle of challenge in his eyes, like he's back to testing her again. He licks his lips.
"If you want to be my partner, fine. Be my full-time partner and accept full-time pay..." A hand slinks under the desk and he leans down slightly. A soft click and then he pulls out a stack of cash and tosses it onto the desk like it's nothing. "But none of this wishy-washy here-when-you-please nonsense." They look to her expectantly, though it's hard to say if they truly expect her to take that sort of deal, but the cash is far more than any regular job would pay in even a week's worth of time. Where it came from is a mystery best left alone. A glance shot down toward the unlabelled vial and the syringe on his desk.
"Deal?"

im stubborn and i like talking here's the reasons i put every character i did in side a into the tourney. I'll do side b later cause i gotta go to bed soon
important first note, quite a few of my decisions were because i was trying to get women in here and it was getting desperate because i had to cut out a lot of women for only being "just some guy" because they were written by a misogynist that made her sit on the sidelines and cheer for the male leads. The Woman Situation Is Always So Fucking Dire.
anyways on to the actual contestants im gonna start with the characters that have been causing the most people to start up shit about them not being just some guy
barry bluejeans (taz balance): 2 submissions, personal bias. i think a lot of people are misunderstanding what this tournament is tbh. this isnt about the "normal" characters, tho normalcy does play a factor in it. this is about dudes who are just some guy. there is a difference. barry is a dnd npc who wears blue jeans in a fantasy world and he loves his wife. yes he is a lich. yes he is involved in the main plot. he's also just chillin. like if the plot didn't happen the way it did barry would be playing sudoku or crosswords. he'd be an average man in a very fantasy world. he is so average and human its funny. he is just some guy
tommy (hlvrai): 1 submission, personal bias. his just some guy energy is so there. he gets a propeller hat that does nothing when all of his crew is getting cool guns and upgrades. his life goal is to go home and take his dog for a walk. he gets a chuck e cheese birthday party. he sounds like he's going to burst into tears at any moment. compared to the rest of the crew, tommy is comedically just some guy
ulala (persona 2): 1 submission, description swayed me. it described the list of characters in persona 2 and ulala was just "your roommate that wanted to go to a party". that's hilarious. also i was getting fucking desperate for women that didn't suck ass as i stated above
apollo (ace attorney): 2 submissions, personal bias, descriptions swayed me. yall the submissions for him were so fucking funny. he's just a lawyer. he just wants to do his job but he lives in the ace attorney universe so everything is fucked all the time. he would've been a normal lawyer if he hadn't met phoenix wright. he's just chillin.
ok now here's every other character
sasha james (tma): 1 submission, friend bias, good description. i asked r if i should put her in because they know tma and they said yes. submission described her as loving to organize and avoided many monsters by being just some guy.
reigen arataka (mp100): 2 submissions. i thought it'd be funny and i was right. he is also just a normal man pretending he's not and he refuses to give up the bit he 100% deserves to be here
joy (underworld office): 1 submission, friend bias. the mc is going through wild ghost related problems and she's just going . hey man. you good??? r's sister submitted her and im not letting her down dude she's awesome
junpei (zero escape): 3 submissions, personal bias. he is literally the only character who has no connection to the larger mystery he's just there because he loves 1 girl. he's PAINFULLY and VITALLY just a dude. i need him
horse (centaurworld): 1 submission. i thought it'd be really funny to include just a horse. her name is horse. thats fucking awesome dude
phone guy (fnaf): 2 submissions. he was the only character from fnaf that got more than 1 submission and there were like 9 fnaf submissions i kinda felt bad tbh. he was also the best example of just some guy out of all the fnaf submissions
gordon freeman (hlvrai): 1 submission. he is a guy playing a video game. he is the straight man to the rest of the crews antics and by god he plays his role well
joshua gillespie (tma): 4 submissions, friend bias, hilarious descriptions. he avoids getting killed because he's so good at following instructions despite him clearly supposed to be dying here. they said don't open the coffin so he didn't. simply don't tuesday
namari (dungeon meshi): 1 submission, personal bias. i like her c: she's pretty level headed compared to like. everyone else in laios's crew. she seems like somebody i could just be friends with and hang out with
shez (fire emblem): 3 submissions, hilarious descriptions. i might try getting into fire emblem because of this. ok so they got murdered in a previous game off screen and now they're the playable character of a new game in a new timeline and they're fucking everything up because they're just supposed to be some guy? thats so fucking funny holy shit i want to know more
henry stickmin (henry stickmin): 1 submission. henry stickmin. like idk i dont feel like i gotta explain this one he's a stickman
stanley (tsp): guaranteed entry
whole (chonny jash): 1 submission, friend bias. tbh i saw him and went oh fuck yeah thats the thing my friends like and then i put him in there. i dont actually know enough about chonny jash to say anything on this but i fully trust the submitter knew what they were doing
larry (pokemon): guaranteed entry
luke carder (inscryption): 1 submission, friend bias, good description. he is just a normal youtuber in the lore of the game. he fucking love card game. good for him man good for him
leorio (hxh): 3 submissions, friend bias, good descriptions. idk a lot about hxh but the descriptions of him compared to the other main characters was pretty convincing
barry the quokka (sonic): guaranteed entry
april o'neil (tmnt): 1 submission, friend bias. absolutely normal girl that just happens to be the one that found the turtles and become their friend
tsuzuru (a3!): 3 submissions, friend bias. descriptions definitely made him feel like a good fit. he's so good at being just some guy i actually thought he was a different character and was shocked when i went to grab images for the tourney and he wasnt the guy i thought he was. which is really funny. like who the fuck is he then. this didn't change my opinion or anything it was just so good
matt (woe.begone): 1 submission. woe.begone fans have ALWAYS been kind to me so they got some mod bias sprinkled in. i dont know what this guys deal is but in the dbtn tourney the guy who got in there had a giant fucking list of things that are happening to him all the time and apparently thats just what woe.begone is like so i believe it when told matt is normal in comparison. everything else is so batshit wild I Just Believe You
gilear (fantasy high): 2 submissions. he seems to be just a dad. wasn't going to get in at first tbh just for personal reasons but i was running out of characters that i felt actually fit the tournament well so ultimately he got in
emmet (lego movie): 4 submissions. honestly with the number of submissions we got, 4 submissions was basically a guaranteed entry. and emmet's whole story is about being just some guy
stahl (fire emblem): 1 submission, hilarious description. fire emblem fans are so funny. what do you mean he can only be perfectly average because everyone else improves/gets worse with him to keep him perfectly average. what the fuck. thats so good
doug (wolf359): 2 entries. i dont know jack shit about wolf359 and honestly the submissions didn't tell me a lot but it was enough to figure he qualifies and i was running out of characters that felt good for the tourney. i trust you wolf359 fans
jack townsend (tales from the gas station): 1 submission, good description. he works at an evil gas station and the description gave me no follow up on what an evil gas station is which is awesome. apparently the horrors are constantly happening and he's just kinda staring at them. he's not paid enough for this
frisk (undertale): guaranteed entry
brian pasternack (yuppie psycho): 1 submission. im gonna be super honest with you here. i dont remember. i know he qualifies but i have 0 thoughts about him. maybe thats a good thing in this tourney. he's an average office worker who has now been tasked with killing The Witch.
trevor (american arcadia): 4 submissions, personal bias, good descriptions. dude i fucking love american arcadia it's so fucking good what a nightmare. he's so normal they were going to kill him for not being entertaining enough

The story of the U-2 that took off from USS Ranger aircraft carrier and spied over French Polynesian nuclear test site at Mururoa atoll
Project Whale Tale and the U-2G
In the 1960s, U-2s could not reach certain remote targets because political difficulties prevented basing the aircraft in some foreign nations. The CIA and US Navy, therefore, studied the idea of launching U-2s from aircraft carriers.
Project Whale Tale fitted a few U-2s with arresting hooks at the rear of the fuselage. The hooks would snag cables strung across aircraft carrier decks and “capture” aircraft, bringing them to a quick stop.
To withstand rough carrier landings, Project Whale Tale U-2s were given stronger landing gear, and also wing spoilers to overcome the U-2’s tendency to glide instead of landing on the carrier deck. Aircraft thus modified were designated U-2G.
The first U-2 takeoff from a carrier took place on Aug. 5, 1963, from the USS Kitty Hawk, off San Diego, Calif. The first U-2 carrier landing occurred on March 2, 1964, aboard the USS Ranger.
The only operational use of the U-2 aircraft carrier operation concept
As told by Kevin Wright in his book We Were Never There Volume 2: CIA U-2 Asia and Worldwide Operations 1957-1974, little more than two months later in May 1964, the US Navy and the CIA conducted the only operational use of the U-2 carrier operation concept under the unclassified code name Fish Hawk.
U-2
Det H commander Colonel William Gregory, was on board USS Ranger for the voyage, having selected personnel and much of the required equipment for the mission. The U-2s had quietly flown to Hickham AFB, Hawaii. Then the two U-2Gs (Art 348 and 362) flew out to join USS Ranger, piloted by Jim Barnes and Buster Edens. Arriving from Hawaii the two flew approaches and trapped landings onto USS Ranger to renew their carrier qualification. Their aircraft were equipped with the newly delivered 112B/Delta II and B cameras.
The aircraft had made radio silent arrival onto USS Ranger in an attempt to hide the operation. Even on the carrier, the two U-2s were kept in a secure area protected by Marines. Representatives from Eastman Kodak and NPIC were on board Ranger to process and assess the tracker camera imagery. The main mission film was to be returned to San Diego by A-3B Skywarrior as soon practicable.
The French Polynesian nuclear test site at Mururoa atoll
Their target was the newly constructed Polynesian nuclear test facility at Mururoa atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago. The French switched to the south Pacific after abandoning their original nuclear test site in Algeria.
The unknown story of the U-2 aircraft that took off from USS Ranger carrier and spied over French Polynesian nuclear test site at Mururoa atoll
U-2G N808X Carrier touchdown on Feb. 29, 1964. Modifications included fitting tail hook and nose bumper in case the aircraft nosed down on the deck after catching a wire.
US intelligence development agencies monitored the development of the French weapons programme. Following an announcement that Prime Minister Georges Pompidou would visit the site in July 1964, the CIA seized the opportunity to photograph the new facilities in the period before nuclear tests began.
The mission plan called for a single sortie, with the new 112B camera, and a small ELINT payload, with two backup flights in case of weather or technical issues. As USS Ranger approached 800 miles from the archipelago the aircraft was readied for the first flight. Two missions were planned. W224A flown by James Barnes on May 19, 1964 with Colonel Gregory recording W224A’s departure at precisely 0700L.
U-2 missions over French Polynesian nuclear test site
Ranger’s radar soon lost contact with him as Barnes climbed to 68,000ft. His task was to cover the primary objective on Mururoa, and several secondary targets, mostly other atolls including Hoa which became an advanced support base. No opposition was expected as Barnes broke the usual cardinal rule of aerial opposition photo-reconnaissance and passed over the main target area twice. He flew over other atolls before imaging the settlement at Papeete, then turned north-eastwards to rendezvous with USS Ranger. He began his let down 100 miles before reaching the carrier and landed straight on.

The second mission, W234A, a repeat of the first, was flown on May 22 by Buster Edens. There had been significant cloud over some of the first mission’s target areas, but by combining both days imagery coverage of all the primary and secondary target areas was achieved.
After the completion of operations, USS Ranger headed to San Francisco. The U-2s departed as they arrived within range of land to touch down at NAS Almeda, then flying on to Edwards AFB.
U-2 crash during aircraft carrier landing practice
On Apr. 26, 1965 veteran CIA pilot Buster Edens died when his U-2G crashed at Edwards AFB. He was due to carry out carrier landing practice on the simulated deck constructed there. On his first approach, he was told to cut power and extend spoilers by the LSO. On touchdown, his left wing touched the runway and dragged along it for some 50ft. Edens applied power and got airborne again and was told to gain altitude and check his aircraft. Just two miles from the control tower he appeared to enter a low-level spin and hit the ground.
