Part 1: "Gravity" - Sara Bareilles

Under a cut because of spoilers if you're waiting for the story to be finished before reading!

I have loved this song since I was in high school. I heard it on a fanvid on Youtube (as everyone did bc it was a popular edit song) and it's been in my writing rotation ever since. Sara is just so talented and her voice is raw and aching in this one. The song in general is about loving someone so much, but also knowing the relationship is toxic and not being able to get away from that person. For Sara, it was about an on-again/off-again relationship, and while Jack and Alex are not in a relationship (technically), the passion between them is very on-again/off-again. Alex knows Jack is taken and he should stay away from him, but he loves him so desperately he can't stay away. These lines are my favorite for Jalex in the story:

Oh, you loved me 'cause I'm fragile When I thought that I was strong But you touch me for a little while And all my fragile strength is gone

That's right on the nose. Alex thinks he can deny Jack, even get over him, until they're alone. Then, he's right back to square one.

I think the title in general is pretty fitting, too. Gravity is the force that pulls everything down on Earth, and Jack is Alex's gravity. No matter what, no matter how hard he tries, Jack's always going to pull him back in. On the flip side, Alex is also starting to be Jack's gravity. Ever since their tryst, Jack has been drawn to Alex in a way he never has before, and despite his marriage, he can't keep Alex off of his mind. 🖤
