@maniculum The first Swiss source of the story is from 16th century author and city councellor of Lucerne Renward Cysat who repeats the story in his "Collectanea Chronica und denkwürdiger Sachen pro Chronica Lucernensis et Helvetiae". Not sure if he read the Gesta Romanorum or heard it from local folklore, because he reports it like it has happened near Lucerne, but also that hundreds of years passed before the man returned from the cave.
Later author Caspar Schott added specific data like that the man was missing from November 1565 to April 1566 and that the story was written on a priests robe that's stored in the Church of St. Leodegar in Lucerne. Athanasius Kircher later added the name of the man, Victor, and the brothers Grimm date it to 1420, but they specifically cite earlier texts like the Gesta and Johann Jacob Scheuchzer, who quoted a lot from Cysat.
20th century folklorist Josef Müller collected a bunch of versions from the Canton of Uri in his 1926 book "Sagen aus Uri". Those are available online in the German original here and here. Also Jakob Kuoni documented one from St. Gallen, found here. These are the ones I could find online, I have no doubt that there might be others out there somewhere. I'm not sure if the Gesta Romanorum inspired the folklore or it was the other way round. I collected all I could find here (also in German).
As far as I could see, most versions differ from the Gesta in that the cave doesn't contain a lot of snakes and one dragon but always two dragons. In most versions the man dies shortly after because he can't eat normal food anymore, similar to some fairy stories.
I just found your podcast and saw that you covered the Gesta Romanorum in a lot of episodes. Since they are pretty long, can you please tell me if the Episode about the man in the snake cave (Charles Swan translated the title as "Of Deliverance from Hell") is in one of them?
It isn't yet. I just checked, and it's one of the ones I have tagged to include in a future episode. If you like, I can make a note to do it the next time we revisit the Gesta Romanorum -- though that won't be for a while, as we have the next few months already planned out and Gesta Romanorum isn't on the schedule.

16+ Of The Funniest Entries For The Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards 2018 So Far
The Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards are fast becoming one of our favorite annual events, combining two of the things we hold so dear here at Bored Panda, cute animals and hilarious situations. Now in its fourth year, entries for the 2018 prize are already flooding in so we decided to give you a sneak peek!
Behind the laughter is a serious message from founders of the awards, Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam. “Remember, we are all about conservation,” they write on their website. “We want you to take up our banner of wildlife conservation, bang the drum, beat the cymbal and make some noise, we need to spread the word – wildlife, as we know it, is in danger, all over the world and we need to do something to help save it. You can start by going and having a look at what the Born Free Foundation are doing at www.bornfree.org.uk”
