HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the amazing and prolific musician, actor, and radio documentarian Jakko Jakszyk. The more one learns about Jakko, the more fascinating he becomes. Born 1958 in London and abandoned as a child, he was adopted by two European refugees who had settled in England after World War 2: Polish Norbert Jakszyk and his French wife, Camille. Jakko would later describe his childhood as unhappy; his adoptive parents' nationalities led to an unsettled home life. He explained, "There was a lot of confusion – English was [a] second language for both of them...they often couldn't understand each other – it led to all sorts of daft misunderstandings and rows." Jakko was frequently in conflict with Norbert, though the two would reconcile later in life.
He would later reconstruct his complex family history in an extended radio piece, THE ROAD TO BALLINA, which aired on BBC Radio 3 in 1996. It’s a mixed music-and-spoken word project that explores his family history and his bittersweet search for his birth mother, an Irish woman who had settled in Arkansas. In addition to Jakko’s own account of growing up as an adoptee, the work included extensive contributions from both of his adoptive parents relating to their often-harrowing wartime experience in Europe as refugees and conscripts and as people under occupation. Several of the recordings were conceptually arranged, including specially made recordings of Norbert that Jakszyk recorded In Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Music-wise, Jakko’s star rose up through the trial and error of the British art rock scene, traversing equal interest in Britpop, funk, jazz fusion, progressive rock, and soundtracks. He became a member of Level 42 and his career went on to intersect with Pandit Danesh, The Kinks, Porcupine Tree, Dave Stewart (Hatfield & The North), Danny Thompson, and several King Crimson spin-offs—and he’s been lead singer for King Crimson since 2013, part of KC’s longest and most stable line-up.
“Judy Get Down” is a Jakko solo single with Davy Jones (Monkees) on blazing harmony vocals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdJgIkNRLLw One day I was working on a deep archiving-remix project for Davy and I tripped across this battered cassette with his handwritten “Judy Get Down” scribbled on the plastic. I popped the tape in and, despite hiss and distortion, out came this rough take of total ear candy with Davy’s vocal counterpoint high in the mix. When I asked him about it, he shrugged and said, “Sometime in the 80s I was in London in a studio. Down the hall was this guy Jacko or Jocko or something. He asked me to sing parts, and this is a rough mix they gave me. I lost touch with it after that.” “Judy Get Down” (written by Anthony Moore of Henry Cow) is a brilliant example of Jakko’s solo work, combining a catchy hook with fretless bass, huge drums, funky guitars, and razor-sharp production. Released in 1986, the song was a modestly successful single in the UK and has since been covered by other artists.
Meanwhile, thank you Jakko for your example of creative drive and heart.

My typewriter says: latest solo effort of King Crimson's voice of the three drummer lineup. Of course some songs sound like nowadays Crimson specially when Fripp is playing on them. The slower pieces this time are better, specially the instrumental piece with his daughter Amber and the song Trouble With Angels. The 5.1 mix on DVD sounds great once again. King Crimson - Indiscipline 2018 🎼🎼🎼🎼 Meltdown marked the first release to feature recordings of the band's extended lineup playing "Breathless", "Discipline", "Moonchild" and the cadenzas of Tony Levin and Jeremy Stacey. These recordings are taken from concerts during the band's June-July 2018 European tour, and are featured at the end of the third disc as the 2018 Official Bootleg. In his road diary, Levin surmised that the series of concerts would impact how the band played in the future 🎼🎼🎼🎼 @kingcrimsonofficial @tonylevin @pmastelotto @gavinharrisonpage @jeremystaceymusic @jakkojakszyk #kingcrimson #robertfripp #tonylevin #gavinharrison #jakkojakszyk #melcollins #jeremystacey #patmastelotto #indiscipline #houtanuk_musicandlife #disciplineglobalmobile #billrieflin #mexicocity #legends #progressiverock #teatrometropolitan #metropolitantheater #artrock #mexico #englishmusician #icons #meltdown #liveinmexicocity #music #livealbum #gods #kingcrimsonlive #kingcrimson2018 #guitarplayer #2018 (at Teatro Metropólitan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA2ws7gjc94/?igshid=hdzq24as3vxi

#vinyloftheday today is a pensive, mostly mellow, mostly instrumental jazz fusion outing from #Dizrythmia. their debut record, came out in the late '80s on the Antilles label, and I remember first finding it as a cassette at the Warehouse in Santa Clara. A super group of sorts, involving @jakkojakszyk, pandit dinesh, danny thompson, and #gavinharrison. It's a lush, understated record that evokes a kind of spacious vibe not unlike pat metheny meets shakti. They only made one other record, several decades later with a slightly different lineup (adding Richard Barbieri), but it's also worth seeking out. #vinyl #quarantunes (at SoFA District) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMhuox7DygQ/?igshid=1pvlmukfolhu3

Saturday morning music with Jakko Jakszyk's fantastic "Bruised Romantic Glee Club" from 2006. In retrospect, this is the first hint of what later would become the latest incarnation of King Crimson. The album features Mel Collins, Robert Fripp, Gavin Harrison and many more excellent musicians such as Mark King, Nick Beggs, Hugh Hopper, Dave Stewart and the Crimson alumni Ian McDonald and Ian Wallace. The mood is perfect for a rainy, melancholic day (such as today). #Prog #JakkoJakszyk #Panegyric #CD #2CD #ProgUnicorn http://bit.ly/2ZHEofI

#quarantunes Thursday...it's the latest solo outing from @jakkojakszyk (featuring guest spots from various members of his past and current projects: Robert Fripp, Gavin Harrison, Mark King, Mel Collins, Peter Hammil). It's sophisticated art-rock/pop that should appeal to a nominally open ear). #vinyl (at SoFA District) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIWn9X0D6yY/?igshid=buoil1x0a4l1
