what's the line between a word changing meaning and being misused? do you suppose it is mostly a matter of it being used differently among a majority than a few speaker?

i learned some linguistics in spanish class last semester, saussure says that languages change only by collective consensus i.e. by majority even if it's wrong. so by definition anything that is the most misused is not misused anymore. it's really pretentious to complain about it really.
