Triangle, my beloved

This drama was a DUMPSTER FIRE that, in my opinion, crossed the line between just awful into some secret tier of amazing. It's the Sharknado of Kdramas. I have to tell you about this show.

First, the premise was amazing. A better writer could've made it the buzziest show of its season. You see glimmers of greatness all through it. However...

The story was NOT written in advance. It was written episode by episode according to input from online fans. And BOY, the results were INSANE. He loves her! He hates her! We need a love triangle! We're going to forget it happened! We can't figure out how to get him out of jail...so the next episode opens with a 2-year time skip and we move on!!

It was COMPLETELY unpredictable, with flat out continuity errors--I'm talking day/night errors, totally forgetting where characters were, cutting to people in the wrong places, people getting stabbed and left for dead and walking around the next day, the whole shebang. One character even completely forgot that he had very emotionally beaten another unconscious and been charged with "finishing him off" in front of a ring of watching gangsters that afternoon--IT CUT TO HIM STANDING IN HIS KITCHEN PEACEFULLY MAKING DINNER AT NIGHT IN DIFFERENT CLOTHES AND THE OTHER GUY WAS INEXPLICABLY FINE!

At that point, to me, it veered completely into comedy and I couldn't stop watching. The characters were a special highlight to me. Have you ever wanted to see a gangster played by Kim Jaejoong whose lipstick occasionally and unevenly turns distractingly pink or orange in-between takes? Now's your chance.

For Im Siwan's character in particular, it seems they were trying to go for a nuanced villain/anti-hero, but couldn't figure out what they wanted and so swung WILDLY between wanting to learn his family's business from the employee-level up, to wanting to escape, to being just some guy, to wanting to return as a mustache-twirling overlord...it was like a parody, and somehow it hit just the right wavelength of being hilarious. He saved it by apparently approaching each episode as a stand-alone concept and putting his whole heart into each week's iteration of the character. It was like, I don't know exactly what this guy is feeling because he's changed his entire motivation and MO like 3 times in 4 episodes, but boy is he feeling something!

(Also, nobody looked ANYTHING like their promo images. Wardrobe, hairstyles all totally different, it was hilarious.)

Towards the end, flashbacks grew longer and longer as the executives apparently quarreled over what material to include. As the actors started to have other encroaching deadlines because they were going over time, they couldn't execute even the plans they wanted, and the ending was completely in the air even as the final episodes were being filmed. Finally, at the end,

A main character died in the first 10 minutes of the finale, from a tiny knife wound and in the arms of a trained emergency responder over an excruciatingly long period of time in which said responder did not do any kind of medical treatment or call an ambulance. Both of the other main characters had taken 5 times the damage of that tiny lil wound and bounced back without a scratch.

I mean for the first three episodes our main man was getting beaten to the point of death, stabbed multiple times and left for dead like every 15 minutes and then walking it off the next day:

so watching this other guy keel over from a tiny little cut was jarring and random to the point that it would've been comedic if all three actors hadn't also been acting with their whole hearts to make you forget the abysmal context and silliness of all that preceded.

Come to find out--that particular decision WAS random!! They had gone so far over time that the actor literally had to fly to France to film another show and so they just killed his character and changed the entire end of the story! Which is honestly just very on-brand for the rest of the show.

If you watch it as each scene by itself, each scene is awesome. If you watch it together? Reverse Gestalt theory!! It's somehow less than the sum of its parts!!! But still? Glorious. Also everyone is gorgeous which is definitely a perk.

To summarize, the process was basically a budgeted improv club on steroids in which everyone did their absolute best to keep pace with the bizarre new twists and act surprised each time the repetitive ones repeated. Vibes: Improv - The Office US - YouTube.

I didn't actually finish it; I think I watched the first 15 minutes of the last episode and then just recapped the end. But honestly? No regrets with the show, it's my favorite worst thing and my go-to for "bad" examples of writing and continuity when I'm tutoring. If you want to see some gorgeous faces and kill brain cells, you must watch Triangle, it's a riot.

Yunho drums his long fingers on the top of the wooden kitchen table, reclining in the matching chair with his other arm thrown over the back of it. It's early morning. The sun isn't even up. Most of the world is still sleeping. But not him. And not Minnie or Jaejoong. They're the very reason he's up, in fact. Their relentless banging around in the kitchen made sure of that.

"Are you two done yet?" Yunho is grumpy when he asks.

"Hm?" Minnie turns her gaze away from the mixing bowl full of homemade whipped cream to look at Yunho with big doe eyes. "Oppa, you can just go back to bed."

"No. No, I can't."

"Why?"

Yunho narrows his eyes. "Is this a joke? He doesn't even live here anymore. We aren't part of the same group or even the same company anymore and you just want me to go back to bed?"

Minnie pouts. "It's still Jaejoong."

Jaejoong, to his credit, stays silent. His protective grip on Minnie's waist sets Yunho's blood to boiling though. How dare the little bastard...

When no one speaks, Minnie dips her finger in the bowl with a shrug and offers up the cream covered digit to Jaejoong. Yunho watches his lips wrap around Minnie's finger as he sucks off the cream and swallows.

"Well?" Minnie's voice is a little lower and her cheeks a deep pink.

"It's good," Jaejoong says.

"Only good?"

Jaejoong leans in closer, pulling her against his chest. His hands fall to her ass and Yunho can see a hint of white lace when Jaejoong's fingers dig into her soft flesh, pulling up her nightgown just a bit.

"Enough!" Yunho bolts out of his seat in a sudden fit of rage. He takes a deep, calming breath and points at Jaejoong. "You better be gone by the time I get out of the bathroom."

Strawberry Cupcakes x Taemin (F)

Summary: After baking strawberry cupcakes for his children, Taemin notices one has gone missing and decides to turn the incident into a teaching moment.

Word Count: 900+

The aroma of freshly baked strawberry cupcakes fills the house as the sun’s rays beam through the windows, painting the walls in warm hues. On almost every face from the walls to the fridge are pictures of you and Taemin’s children, twins Jaehyun and Jaejoong, and Minah, the youngest who is adored by her older brothers.

The thought of becoming a father terrified Taemin when you told him you were pregnant, and that feeling intensified when the ultrasound revealed you were carrying twins. Many nights he would call his parents for advice and sucked his teeth when their advice was more like a riddle rather than an answer. But it wasn’t until the twins turned a few months old that he finally understood what his parents meant by parenthood is a learning experience that you become better at as time goes on. Raising a child, Taemin had a greater sense of responsibility as he made it his responsibility to teach his children in love, show them love and compassion, and help them develop morals.

Taemin walks towards the sound of his children’s laughter with the plate of cupcakes in his hands. A smile grows on his face when he reaches the back door and sees his children running around the yard with ribbons and cardboard swords, letting their imagination take them on a magical adventure. In moments like this, no photograph or video can truly capture the beautiful innocence playing before him.

“I made cupcakes,” he yells while using his hip to open the door. He softly laughs at his children throwing their props to the ground and racing towards him as he sets the plate on the picnic table.

Eating their father’s homemade cupcakes is always a treat considering his busy schedule always got in the way for him to make them from scratch. The children eagerly sit at the table and pout at their father as he holds his hand up for them not to eat yet.

“Before we eat,” Taemin says while looking closely at the children’s eager faces. “We have a thief on our hands.”

“No!” Jaejoong exclaims while covering his mouth, his wide eyes staring at his father who nods.

“While I was in the shower, I left the cupcakes out to cool and one of them went missing.”

Jaehyun joins his brother and covers his mouth with wide eyes. The boys share a look before looking back towards Taemin. “Do you guys know where it went?” The children shake their heads and mumble ‘no’. Taemin carefully examines his children’s faces but focuses on Minah, who has pink crumbs on the corner of her mouth. He softly smiles and nods.

“We all know it’s not good to take things without permission and lie, don’t we?” He gently asks. The children nod their heads, making Taemin put his hand down and push the plate towards the middle of the table. “Okay, you can eat now.”

The twins eagerly grab a cupcake and stuff their mouths, melting at the fruity taste while Minah watches Taemin disappear back into the house. A small frown appears on her face as she gets up from the picnic table and enters the house, following her father to the kitchen.

The sound of tiny footsteps makes Taemin stop and turn around to face Minah. The look of sadness on her face feels like a punch to the stomach as he kneels until he’s eye-to-eye with her, his hand gently holding hers.

“What’s wrong with my princess?” He softly asks. He gently rubs the back of her hand when he notices her eyes begin to tear up.

“I…” Minah begins but is unable to finish her sentence as a string of sniffles take over her low voice.

“Hey, hey, hey,” Taemin coos as he scoops her in his arms and stands. Her arms wrap around his neck and hide her face in the crook of his neck. “You know you can tell me anything, right?”

Minah nods, her face still hidden as she takes a shaky breath. “I...I ate the cupcake, daddy. I’m sorry for taking it and not telling you.”

The young girl’s arms tighten around Taemin’s neck as he holds her close, gently rocking her as he rubs soothing circles on her back. Suddenly, he wiggles his fingers in Minah’s side, making her pull away and loudly laugh. He can’t help but laugh at his daughter’s innocence as he sets her on the counter and tilts her head up so she looks at him.

“I forgive you,” he says with a reassuring smile. “Just try not to do it again, okay? Ask permission first before taking something that doesn’t belong to you.”

“I promise!” Minah exclaims with a burst of energy. She brightly smiles and leans forward with puckered lips. Taemin turns his cheek to her and leans in enough for Minah to place a kiss on his cheek before he sets her on the ground.

“Now go play,” Taemin encourages and watches her disappear around the corner.

It’s in moments like this that Taemin better understands what his parents meant when they said parenthood was a learning experience - no two children are the same and you must be ready to guide them to know right from wrong and help them develop good morals. Although taking a cupcake was a minor offense, He knows that the way he responded helps build the trust and relationship he will have with his children - it can either build them or break them. And if there is one thing Taemin takes seriously, it’s being a father.
