4, 7, 11 for your Baavira kids?
4. Having this/these character/s as their parents, how did it affect them?
Some of Tai's earliest memories were of sitting on Kuvira's lap as a toddler while she drafted legislation in Ba Sing Se and read each document to him in a voice so steady it was calming, so pursuing a career in law and politics felt as natural as breathing for him.
As Kuvira and Baatar's eldest daughter, Avani felt the pressure of the Beifong legacy and wanted to become the greatest metalbender there was. She also saw the way her mother dedicated the whole of herself to her work and internalized the same priorities. This is partly why she ultimately decided to prioritize her position as an Earth Kingdom general over relationships with both of her great loves.
Priya (ever the middle child) had a rebellious streak that often clashed with her mother's military discipline. She ended up leaving home at a relatively young age to pursue a career as a professional dancer and going no-contact with her parents for a while.
As the first nonbender of the siblings and a young engineer, Jae felt stifled growing up in a city that Baatar had rebuilt. He felt like his father's legacy was everywhere and there was no room for him to make a name for himself in Ba Sing Se. So he decided to go to university in Republic City and took a job at Varrick's company as soon as he graduated.
Shreya often felt like Kuvira infantilized her because she was the youngest and a nonbender, so she was always closer to Baatar. She grew up learning from her father in his workshop and watching him lecture at Ba Sing Se University, and he was the one who inspired her to become a civil engineer.
7. Which parent do they most resemble look-wise?
Tai and Shreya look more like Baatar (they also both wear glasses), while Avani and Jae look more like Kuvira. People say Priya looks more like Suyin than either of them.
11. How are their relationships with other relatives (grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles etc.)?
Tai is closest to Opal and Baatar Sr. He shares his aunt's love of reading, and they were always able to connect over old books and their shared project of preserving the family's history. He also enjoyed looking through his grandfather's sketchbooks.
Avani is closest to Wei and Wing. They always spoiled her and played with her as a child, and they were the ones who got her involved in youth earthbending tournaments. She also has an affinity for her Great Aunt Lin, whose style of metalbending she preferred to her grandmother's.
Priya is Suyin's darling. Growing up, she spent most of her summers in Zaofu, dancing in her grandmother's troupe and training in the meteorite garden. It was no surprise to anyone that Priya was the one who ultimately inherited the title of Metal Clan Matriarch from Suyin. She also adores her Uncle Huan and often joined him on his travels around the world.
Jae and Bolin always had a good relationship, and it got even stronger after he moved to Republic City for college. It was even Bolin who recommended he apply for the internship at Varrick Global Industries.
Shreya is also really close to Opal. As a non-metalbending Beifong woman, she sometimes felt like Aunt Opal was the only one who understood her.
Ask me about my next gen ocs!

How many (possibly important) details were left out of Zuko's story at the Western Air Temple? Even if he trusts the Wings it's been established that he's terrible at talking about himself, and I feel like they would have reacted to hearing that Yue knows the whole truth. Not to mention how the wildflowers' song fits right in with Jae's planning. Jae seems to be focusing on how his travels influenced Zuko, missing how he's already been making connections and influencing other people in turn. Understandable since he has a habit of undervaluing his own actions, but might lead to some amusing introductions down the line. (And on the topic of unexpected but valuable allies, how influential are the Beifong family on a global scale?)
Finally getting around to answering your asksss!!
Zuko did a pretty good job not leaving much out. He took a chance and revealed everything to them, all surviving dual benders and possible new airbenders and all. So they know all about Yue! Wasn't too big of a surprise since they already knew he was friends with her and she's also a Yangchen era fan. After finding out he's had a lóng egg on him for two years, learning Yue has narwolves and knows all about zuko was easy to swallow haha
I wouldn't say Jae's missed how Zuko's been making connections and influencing others, so much as she needed to take in all of zuko's hijinks before thinking about the bigger picture lol. Through their travels she'll be asking more pointed questions to learn more about people zuko wrote off as irrelevant but could be vital to their goals (music nomads, water tribe spies, etc)
I'd say the Beifong are big players in the mercantile field and a well known name in the business, but politically only significant in the EK. They probably could make it to an international standing, but I imagine Lao isn't much of a risk taker

Soooo... I need to know more about Jae Shin!! What is her personality like, who is she closest to, her likes/dislikes... Tell me everything😁😁
Thank you so much for asking about this babe.💙 I love her so much and have so many thoughts/plans about her. Answer is under a read more because I started ranting and it’s hella long
Jae Shin upon first glance is the stereotypical airbender in personality: calm, wise, stoic. But this is very much a facade, she emphasizes these traits because she feels as if that is what is expected of her, especially by Tenzin. He was her main caretaker as Lin was rising in the ranks of the police department when Jae Shin was young. Jae Shin is about 12 years older than Jinora, so she was an only child for a while, meaning all of Tenzin’s hopes and expectations about the future of the Air Nation was singularly put on Jae Shin. She was born before Aang died and has quite a few memories of him, of hearing the stories about the events of atla. Which makes her even more determined to carry on the legacies.
Except she isn’t an airbender like everyone (really Tenzin) hoped for. But she still tries her best to be a great daughter and uphold all the teachings of the air nomads. She’s incredibly intelligent, diligent, and ambitious. Since Tenzin gave up on training her to airbend after the rest of his children were born, Jae Shin found her own way to honor Aang. She helped found, build, and continues to manage the Avatar Historical Museum on Aang Memorial Island.
Her relationship with her father is complex. She knows he loves her, but she has buried bitterness and jealousy about the attention he gives the airbender kids. She loves her other siblings, she truly does and tries to help Pema keep an eye on them. She is really close to her mother. She will bring take out to the station in order to have dinner with Lin and spend time with her. Jae Shin can read her mother very well, and knows how much Lin does care deep down, but respects her strength so much. They have the same kind of dry, blunt humor. Jae Shin can also be a bit reckless with her own life and suppresses so much. But she likes to be direct, confronts problems (unless they involve her relationship with her father) head-on, but in a gentle way. She tries to be diplomatic like Aang was, but is incredibly stubborn, and it takes a lot for herself to be swayed. When it comes to her core values and her beliefs and her thoughts on other people, she knows she's right (which could either be true or a false depending). She can be self-deprecating and insecure.
Honestly, Lin is probably the person in Republic City Jae Shin is closet to. Lin has found the balance of freedom yet supportive and present in her parenting style Toph struggled with. But they both tend to hold things back sometimes with each other because they think that is what’s best. Jae Shin has an unexpected friend of sorts that she has the most honest conversations with. But that’s a spoiler that I won’t reveal in public.
She used to be really close to Sokka. Her favorite food is seaweed noodles from Narook’s because Sokka would take her there all the time. He knew what it was like to be related to great benders and kept telling her she could accomplish so many amazing things as a nonbender (like him). His and Aang’s deaths hit Jae Shin really hard. Her Uncle Bumi kinda filled a bit of the space Sokka left as fun Uncle who tells her its okay to be a nonbender.
Likes include: creeping crystal candy, jasmine tea, plays (especially Love Amongst the Dragons). Dislikes: probending, Tarrlok, sand.

omg i love atla's universe and i love beyond evil! can we have your list of the characters' hc as benders? pretty please💕 i love going through people's hc~
RIGHT anon, so i had to take a second to write this out bc OHOHOOO
so i headcanon'd joo won as a firebender, in part because of his attitude, but also how i feel like he just has that duality in him, what with fire being able to destroy something but also bring something to life, which is exactly how i see joo won and how he goes about his whole life. (also, a nod to iroh's whole speech on the elements: those of the fire nation have desire and will to achieve exactly what they want, which i think sums han joo won up nicely. sometimes that's a good thing, other times it's a bad thing, just depending on what the goal is.)
i see dong sik as a waterbender, in part because i love the fire/water duality, but also because something about how waterbenders always seem to prioritize community (think the water tribes, the swamp people). i think dong sik is someone who was always at the heart of his community, whether he necessarily wanted to be or not--but more than that, he also is someone who's had to adapt to so many of the changes in his life. there's something to be said about how he really had no choice when it came to adapting, but i see him as a waterbender just because of how he looks at a problem and works his way to getting what he wants, rather than crumbling apart. (needing to be fluid, needing to move with the tides of change, even if he hates it . . . very waterbender of him.)
i see jae yi and ji hoon as airbenders--jae yi, because she's someone who strives after freedom first and foremost. that's not to say that she's completely detached from her home, but we see that she looks outward, and she takes breaks when she needs to. she'll always find her way back home, but that desire to break herself free has always struck me as airbender of her. i kind of see ji hoon in the similar boat, just because of that one time he'd sounded so resentful about having to be stuck in manyang. like jae yi, i think he does crave a bit of freedom or movement outside of the town (which is made more interesting when we look at the script book, which notes that ji hoon had, at one point, actually been .. . . a part of a failed kpop group).
ji hwa strikes me as a an earthbender, just because something something about how she has that same attitude that's so reminiscent of lin beifong, ngl--but also, just the fact that ji hwa is just so no-nonsense. she definitely has her own secrets, but she still faces confrontation as head-on as she can: batting away lee chang jin, straight up asking han joo won if he has a problem with her, etc. all the signs of an earthbender.
the only character who i'm not totally sure of is probably park jeong je. he strikes me as an airbender in some ways (although that might just be because of his speech pattern, and how he too craves freedom), and also because i like the image of him holding a tiny tornado in his hand.
but as for other headcanons . . . god, i have this image in my head of dong sik bending the raindrops around him and joo won so that it doesn't hit their heads . . . . or joo won holding a little flame in a power outage, the flame only barely lighting dong sik and his own face (y'know, like that scene in the secret tunnel episode between katara and aang) . . . oh, and i can see ji hoon and jae yi racing each other on gliders in the skies, and ji hwa just stomping her foot to create a little earthquake if she's pissed.

From "Enemy Lines"
“Would you look at that skyline?” Baatar said as the airship flew toward the nascent Si Wong City. “The way the sunset reflects off the glass skyscrapers. It’s a marvel.”
“A marvel,” Kuvira repeated as she sidled up beside him, a wry smile in her voice. “That’s high praise. Now will our son actually get to hear it this time?”
“He only cares when Varrick says it.”
“That isn’t true,” Kuvira said, taking his hand. “Varrick has become a mentor to him these past few years, but you’re Jae’s father.”
“A fact he only wishes to live down,” Baatar said with a sigh. “Where did I go wrong with him?”
“You didn’t,” Kuvira said. “We didn’t. He’s just on his own path, like we were.”
Baatar gave her a look. “You mean the path that put us on trial for war crimes?”
“By comparison our kids are doing great,” she replied. “Now, remember, no matter how Varrick and Zhu Li act, we have to be civil. Lily’s important to him.”
Baatar raised an eyebrow. “Love, am I really the one of us who needs reminding? If I recall correctly, you’re the one with a record of attempted murder.”
“Details.” Kuvira waved him off. “Anyway, we’re landing.”
“I can already tell this is going to be an ordeal.”
“It’s not like it'll be our first time behind enemy lines.”

BEIFONGS! Please, tell me more about jae shin!!!
LoK (season 1 specifically) holds a special place in my heart. When I rewatched it a few years ago, I saw the dysfunction of the second generation (Tenzin and Lin specifically) and thought “why not explore that more? Also I thought of the question: “what would it be like to be a nonbender when your family legacy is built upon bending?” Thus Jae Shin Beifong was created. Jae Shin is very dear to me; her character has undergone a few changes, but I’m obsessed with her and her complex relationships with her family and the greater cast of lok.
Backstory: Jae Shin is the daughter of Tenzin and Lin Beifong, making her the granddaughter of Aang, Katara, and Toph. Jae Shin is about 13 years than Jinora, meaning that for most of Jae Shin’s childhood, she was only child and all of Tenzin’s hopes and expectations about the future of the Air Nation were singularly put on Jae Shin. She was born before Aang died and has quite a few memories of him and his stories about the events of atla, which makes her even more determined to carry on the legacies of her grandparents.
A mostly happy childhood shifted once Aang died. Tenzin and Lin’s relationship started to fall apart, and the differences in what they wanted in life finally reached a tipping point. Tenzin felt the weight of legacy all the more now as the last airbender and he worked harder to try to train Jae Shin and force her airbending. Then Tenzin married Pema, and the birth of Jinora soon followed. There was another shift in Jae Shin’s relationship with Tenzin when Jinora airbent for the first time at an extremely young age. His attention then focused solely on Jinora, and eventually the rest of the airbending kids. It hurt Jae Shin but she internalized it all and didn’t let anyone see any glimpse of her pain. She really wanted to be an airbender, and it took her a long while to accept that she would never be one. She struggled with this throughout her teen years, but when she was 17, she was literally visited by the spirit of Yue.
After that, Jae Shin decided she needed a break from Air Temple Island, so she moved to the South Pole to live with her Aunt Kya and attend the local university. Jae Shin made frequent visits to the compound to visit her grandmother Katara and Avatar Korra (Jae Shin is a great big sister, and treats Korra like one of her siblings). Jae Shin’s studies focused on Avatar Kyoshi and the Kyoshia warriors. During this time away, Jae Shin was able to heal, her nonbending become more of a scar than a wound.
When Jae Shin returned to Republic City, she initially started working at the city’s museum but then became a secretary at City Hall in order to help her father with his position as Councilman. Not long after, she was approached by Amon who tried to recruit her to the Equalist movement as she was the nonbender granddaughter of Avatar Aang. Jae Shin refused to join but she was curious about Amon, so while she made it clear that she wasn’t signing up, she invited him into further conversation. This resulted in secret, weekly talks. Jae Shin was attempting to live up to Aang’s example, who befriended his enemy, most notably Zuko. She believed in some aspects of the Equalists (very aware of there being tension between benders and non) and wanted to see if she can find some kind of ground to negotiate a more peaceful movement. Meanwhile, Amon still thought she could become a powerful voice in the movement and wanted to sway her to the Equalists. However, these talks slowly stopped becoming about their own agenda and created an unexpected kind of friendship, even though they shouldn’t be so fond of the other. By the time season one starts, they have been speaking to each other for over a year, and Korra’s arrival in Republic City changes everything.
(Here is where I admit I have and always will be a villain fucker. A complex backstory, intense personality/charisma, and a deep voice are weaknesses. Also, there is so much potential nuance in the equalist storyline that was just never dived into in the show, especially when all of the canonical issues between benders and non were completely dropped after s1….so Jae Shin’s story is a way of exploring all of that. And also just this idea of forbidden secret friendship (where they are both suppressing any deeper feelings because even just friendship is dangerous sets my brain on fire. It’s alll about pining for what you know you shouldn’t want and divided loyalty.)
Personality: When people meet Jae Shin, they expect either another version of her father (stoic, wise Airbender) or of her mother (blunt, uncompromising metalbender). Instead, Jae Shin is very charming with a good sense of humor and sweet-tempered nature. Katara remarks on how much Jae Shin reminds her of Aang and Jae Shin tries to best to emulate her grandfather. She’s highly intelligent, diligent, ambitious, and observant. But Jae Shin wears her geniality like a mask to hide the remnants of bitterness and insecurity from growing up as a nonbender when her father (and really the world) wanted her to be an airbender. She has this sense of perfectionism when it comes to her appearance, always wanting to stay composed and friendly, even if it means she is suppressing her own anger or pain. She has a loving and soft heart, but a spine of steel. She is incredibly stubborn, but in subtle ways, because she is stubborn about internal things.
#jae shin asks#jae shin beifong#fic: faultlines#thank you so much for asking about her!#i could rant endlessly about her and the complexities of her relationships

Only one meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.
One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
Please Note: If you are removed during two consecutive activity checks, you will not be allowed to re-apply as that character for two calendar months.
Additionally, anyone removed during the activity check will have a 12-hour window from the time of posting to re-claim their character. Any character not reclaimed during that period will be open to the community at large.

Other Powers
For Baatar Jr. Week (Day 6: Power) @baatarjrweek
When Tai was born, Toph had planted her feet in his general direction and declared him an earthbender, though his powers didn’t manifest until four years later. When Avani learned to crawl, she bore labyrinthine tunnels through the gardens and it took Kuvira’s seismic sense to find her in them, always caked in dirt and with moonflowers enmeshed in her hair. And when Priya’s peals of laughter split the air, his wife’s steel bracelets rattled like wind chimes, the metal singing in response to their infant daughter’s jubilation.
When Baatar’s mother called them thrice blessed with prodigies, Kuvira’s face glowed with pride—while Baatar suppressed an eye roll—and when she fell pregnant again, the matriarch made no secret of her wish for a fourth earthbending grandchild.
But Jae’s infancy came and went without any sign of a capacity for bending revealing itself. “Wait and see,” Kuvira had said, and “Give it time,” his mother advised, but years passed, and despite the family’s unceasing interventions, Jae was never able to make so much as a pebble move.
“He’s at it again,” Baatar said as he glanced out a window, watching his six-year-old son run through a sequence of earthbending stances his older sisters had drilled into him.
Kuvira drifted to his side and gazed out at the training field. “His form is flawless,” she said, shaking her head slightly. Baatar tried not to chafe at the hint of regret in her voice. “Maybe we can find him a master in the nonbending martial arts.”
“I don’t know if that helps.” Baatar sighed. “He doesn’t want to fight; he wants to earthbend. Anything short of that just winds up disappointing. Trust me, I would know.”
“Maybe you’re right,” Kuvira said. “I’ll try talking to him again.”
Baatar rested a hand on her shoulder, stopping her. “Let me go this time.”
She nodded and he slipped out the back door to make his way to the training field. He watched his son go through the stances again, his face set in hard determination—much like Kuvira’s when she was focused on a task— before intervening.
“Jae, would you like to come up to the workshop with me?” he asked. “I’ve been working on some new designs, and I could use your help.”
“Maybe later, dad,” he said. “I need to keep working on these moves so I’m ready when my earthbending comes in.”
Baatar took a deep breath, preparing himself to give a variation of the talk his father once had with him. To be a Beifong born without the power of earthbending felt in many ways like being a bird without a song. That had been Baatar’s reality for years, decades, before he came to terms with his own skills and limitations. But it would not be his son’s if he had any say in the matter.
“It’s true, you could develop earthbending in a few months or a few years.” He took a seat on a pile of earth discs. “But you could also be a nonbender, like me.”
“But probably not, though, right? Tai and Avani and Priya can all earthbend, so why would I be the only one who can’t?”
Baatar forced himself not to look away from the pleading look in his son’s green eyes. “No one can really say why some people have bending abilities and others don’t. There are geneticists who’ve dedicated their entire careers to the question.”
“Dad, what’s a geneticist?”
“A scientist who studies heredity and the variation of organisms and…and that isn’t really important now,” he said. “The point is, bender or nonbender, your mother and I love you and will always be proud of you.”
“Does being a nonbender mean I’ll have to become an engineer?”
“Of course not,” Baatar said, “but I’m here if you ever want to learn.”
Jae seemed to think this over for a moment. “Can we design a super fast car?”
Baatar smiled. “The fastest.”
“Really? Then let’s go!”
As he jogged to match his son’s pace back to the house, up to his workshop, he hoped the powers he could offer—of innovation and design—would be enough to fill an earth-shaped void.
