Jacques Offenbach

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) was a composer of German birth who took French citizenship and became famous in Paris for his comic operettas, a genre he created, and for the more serious opera, The Tales of Hoffmann. A virtuoso cellist, conductor, and prolific composer of stage works, Offenbach was hugely popular across Europe through the 1860s.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) était un compositeur d'origine allemande qui prit la nationalité française et devint célèbre à Paris pour ses opérettes comiques, un genre qu'il créa, et pour l'opéra plus sérieux Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Violoncelliste virtuose, chef d'orchestre et compositeur prolifique d'œuvres scéniques, Offenbach connut une immense popularité dans toute l'Europe au cours des années 1860.

"The week before I saw Joan Sutherland in recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington, I brought my 'La Traviata' score for her to autograph and she did. She asked 'You are a singer?' I told her no one calls themself a singer in the presence of the great Joan Sutherland and she laughed. She then told me she was doing a concert with Pavarotti next week and she was very nervous because she had a dreadful cold. I told her 'You are going to be great as always. Who am I to tell you this, but you know, you can sing over a cold. You could not sing badly if you wanted to!' She said 'You have no idea how much what you just said to me matters. Will you come backstage and see me after the performance? I feel so much better after talking to you.” Warren Scarboro (fan) about the Lincoln Center concert with Pavarotti in 1979.

••• (((💗))) ••• ➡️ Repost from @delectoarte • Ópera: ✍🏻|Jacques Offenbach 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 (1819-1880) & Jules Barbier 🇫🇷 (1825-1901) 🎹|Los cuentos de Hoffmann (1881) El gran compositor alemán-francés Jacques Offenbach había visto en 1851 una obra escrita por Jules Barbier y Michel Carré titulada «Los cuentos fantásticos de Hoffmann». La obra se basaba en algunas historias del famoso escritor E. T. A. Hoffmann, en la cuál, el mismo escritor era un personaje importante. Offenbach, emocionado, compuso la música para crear una ópera sobre esta pieza teatral y el mismo Jules Barbier adaptó el libreto en francés para apoyar dicha música.
