“Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.” — Pablo Picasso It was here, at Villa Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougins, in the hills above Cannes, where Picasso lived out the last days of his life, with his passing in 1973. Prior to his ownership of the 15-bedroom, three-hectare estate, which he purchased in 1961, it had for decades belonged to the Anglo-Irish Guinness brewing family. Fast forward to 2008, a Dutch real estate tycoon purchased the villa and invested twice the purchase price in renovations and decoration, in the hands of antiquarian Axel Vervoordt. Sadly, the house went to auction (divorce is such fun) and the villa is now owned by a New Zealand real estate businessman. The elegant curving staircase, evocative of a nautilus shell, ascends toward the light, casting ever-changing shadows along walls and onto the floors. Jacques Couëlle Straight lines are at a minimum in this grotto-style Jacques Couëlle home, which sits surrounded by palm trees in Provence’s Mouans-Sartoux. Following Couëlle’s architecture-sculpture style, featuring white walls that seem to have been roughly hewn from stone, it’s one of five ‘landscape houses’ designed by Couëlle all of which used rounded forms designed to resemble natural shapes, often resembling grottoes or traditional cave houses. The architect believed that harsh lines and right angles ‘provoked human anxiety’. Inside, curved ceilings, arches and an open fireplace have been left purposefully irregular, and are contrasted by details also designed by the self-taught architect – including a bronze mural that conceals doors to the kitchen and cellar. A deep-set porthole-style window offers views across the nearby bay, while other windows are set behind clefts in the house’s exterior, or feature decorative geometric steel coverings. White walls are contrasted by wooden doors, a terracotta staircase, and a brightly coloured harlequin-style tiled floor in one of the bedrooms. The Provence property – which was designed in 1962 and is labeled as Heritage of the 20th Century – also features a swimming pool and outdoor covered terrace. Jacques Couëlle This 1960s Jacques Couelle designed property in Mouans-Sartoux, south-east France was the house that Jacques lived in. It’s all about organic shapes - a house designed to fit in with nature and its natural surroundings - intended as a contrast to the angular modernism that was popular in the day. The house can be found in a private and secure area above Cannes offering amazing views to match the architecture. Once inside, you’ll find 231 sq. metres of living space and a variety of finishes including, stone, terracotta for floors, ceramics iron and glass for the walls, wood and glass for the doors plus copper for the detailing. The house is mostly single level with a living room dominated by a central and rounded fireplace as well as a mural sculpture by Constantine Andreou that hides two doors – one leading to the kitchen and the cellar, the other being a suite with bathroom and a ‘sun room’ with harlequin colours on the floor. A curved staircase also leads to two bedrooms, an office and two bathrooms, while a basement hosts a garage a cellar and a wine cellar (hubba hubby!) The outside space has various terraces and open spaces along with a pool surrounded by a terrace which in turn offers views of Cannes in the distance.
