Three people were killed by a gunman inside a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Fla., in what the mayor said was a “hate-filled crime.”
The gunman died after shooting himself, Sheriff T.K. Waters of Jacksonville said at a news conference on Saturday evening.
As news of the shooting filtered through the community, people formed prayer circles outside the scene, which was cordoned off by the police.

The television station Action News Jax reported earlier that there had been a standoff at a Dollar General store with a barricaded gunman.
The sheriff confirmed that the man who killed numerous people in a mass shooting with an AK-15 and Glock was seen on Edward Waters University’s campus on Edward Waters University’s (EWU) campus moments before gunfire erupted.
The shooter, who has not been identified, lives in Clay County with his parents, Waters said. He was involved in a domestic call with no arrests in 2016 and was also Baker Act in 2017, according to the sheriff.
According to Waters, two Black men and a Black woman were killed. No one else was injured, the sheriff said.
Just after 11:30 p.m., Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook told the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office that the shooter left the Clay County area and was headed to Jacksonville.
By 1:18 p.m., the shooter sent a text to his father, telling him to check his computer, Waters said. That’s when the shooter’s parents called the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and told deputies they found a manifesto.
Waters said detectives found three manifestos in an Oakleaf home that expressed a “disturbing ideology of hate” were found and written to the media, his parents, and federal agents.
“To plainly put it, this shooting was racially motivated and he hated Black people,” Waters said. “This is a dark day in Jacksonville. Any loss of life is tragic, but the hate that motivated the shooter’s killing spree adds an additional layer of heartbreak.”

I know I'm way late, but I just have to say that I fucking love that the black community in Jacksonville impacted by the Dollar Store shooting booed DeSantis when he came to make a mandatory appearance. They had every right to. This man and the ideology he represents are directly responsible for the demonization of POC (especially BIPOC), queer people, women, and other marginalized groups.
Is it any surprise when someone is radicalized by that hatred and decides to "do something about it"? We've seen it happen time and time again.
I'm so proud of the Jacksonville community for making such a visible stance against the piece of shit DeSantis and making it clear he wasn't welcome.

fucking livid that desantis thinks he can just turn around and put on his fucking human suit and condemn the jacksonville gunman after signing legislation that fosters the very environment that kind of hate grows in. their blood is on his hands just as much as palmeter’s.

Angela Michelle Carr, 52
Carr, an Uber driver, was dropping off a passenger at the Dollar General on Saturday when the gunman opened fire, killing her inside her vehicle, according to her daughter.
Tumblr media
Ashley Carr, who spoke by phone with NBC News on Monday, sobbed as she remembered her mother as a "hard-working" and "dedicated" woman. "She was a great woman, and she’s been taken," Carr said. "I hope her spirit is at rest." Ashley Carr said she knows that the family of the gunman, who killed himself at the scene, feels "grief as well." She said she is praying for them.
Anolt Joseph “A.J.” Laguerre Jr., 19
Anolt Laguerre Sr., who spoke to NBC News via Zoom, remembered his son as a "very bright" young man who had recently graduated from high school.
Tumblr media
Laguerre Sr. said his son had started working at the Dollar General to make some "change in his pocket." "The only thing ... he likes in life is to work," Laguerre Sr. said. "He doesn't ask nobody for nothing." Laguerre Sr. expressed dismay over the brutal realities of racism in the United States, saying "Florida seems like it’s worse than anywhere else." "I should not have to bury my son," he said. "He's too young for that. He's just trying to live."
Jerrald De’Shaun Gallion, 29
Tyesha Jones, the mother of Gallion's daughter, described him as a devoted father and co-parent. Gallion and Jones were no longer romantic partners, but they remained close. "He was my best friend," Jones told NBC News at a vigil on Sunday. "He was my daughter's best friend. He got her every weekend. He was the best daddy ever."
Tumblr media
"From the time my daughter got pregnant 'til yesterday, Jerrald never missed a beat," Rozier said at the vigil. She said that Gallion had planned to spend Saturday with his daughter. "We're still trying to find the words to tell her that her daddy is gone. I don't have the words to tell her, to break her heart. ... This man saw fit to break my granddaughter's heart and take her daddy away," Rozier said, referring to the gunman. Rozier added that she was already close with Gallion's family before the fatal shooting, "but this is just going to bring us closer."

Welcome to Florida: where your children will be forced to carry their rapists’ babies but are forbidden to learn why white supremacists with AR-15s commit mass shootings that target black people. It’s on you ron desantis you will never be our president in 2024. Fuck. You!
