Idk if I already answered this… but I love this topic so I’m gonna speak my truth.

I don’t think Jack is deranged or completely out of his mind. If anything maybe maybe Roger leans more that way. Even then I’m not sure. But with Jack I’m definitely like no.

I think Jack feels a lot of emotions throughout the book and pushes those down by doing what he does. For example, he is embarrassed/ashamed that he let the fire go out and upset Ralph, but doesn’t want to feel that way, and when Piggy calls him out again, he snaps at Piggy and hits him.

It’s like toxic masculinity basically, while at the same time I think it’s like he’s young and doesn’t know how to deal with his feelings. Of course that’s not an excuse but an explanation.

Also, I think at least some of the time Jack is aware of what he’s doing. Like I don’t buy that he really believes Simon was the beast, but the beast is still out there. Like what is he even talking about? He’s just trying to continue the fight against Ralph’s tribe.

I think he knows Piggy just died, is shocked, but then covers it up by turning his attention back to Ralph.

And, most importantly, I think at the end of the book Jack is totally aware that he did the wrong things, because he doesn’t admit that he was in charge. He lets Ralph take the fall, even though Ralph would get to say he was the leader. That’s something Jack didn’t like from the beginning, but now when it carries the weight of 2+ deaths he goes quiet.

I’m sure the island and the circumstances did play a part for sure. Idk how big of a role… Because I think Jack is just an insecure person who needs to be number 1 (or the best or the leader whatever) so when things weren’t going his way even slightly he retaliated. And I don’t know if he wouldn’t be that way if say Simon was made head chorister. It’s just that in normal society he couldn’t like fight someone with a stick.

So I think my answer is that he’s sane, but very insecure, and maybe the island had a small impact on him. But I don’t think he totally went out of his mind, maybe just a tiny bit.

genuine question because i’ve been thinking about it for a while. do you guys think jack is genuinely deranged and completely out of his mind, or do you think that he is sane and the island did horrible things to him?
