Grammy-winning gospel singer Kirk Franklin says he is boycotting the Christian music Dove Awards, the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), and the Gospel Music Association "until tangible plans are put in place to protect and champion diversity," after part of his acceptance speech addressing police brutality was edited out.
After calling for prayers for a Fort Worth, Texas woman was killed by a police officer the weekend of the awards show, the "Love Theory" singer said history is repeating itself. A similar incident happened when he won the award in 2016 and was told he would not be censored again.
On Monday night he said he was "heartbroken" and felt like quitting after what happened on TBN.
"During that [2016] awards speech, I felt the responsibility as a Christian and a man of color, to address the civil unrest at that time that was plaguing our country with the killings of Philando Castile and Walter Scott, just to name a few, by white police officers, and at the same time the horrific killing of five Dallas police officers by an African-American," Franklin said in a video on Instagram.
"I called upon the audience to join me in remembering that as Christians when we say nothing, we're saying something," he recalled. "After a standing ovation, we prayed, stood in unity for all the families affected by those tragedies." That moment, Franklin said felt like a "shift in the climate of our separate worlds." But it was a moment that was edited out of the 2016 Dove Awards show.
Franklin feels an unfortunate sense of déjà vu in 2019 and is not standing for it. He said the goal of his boycott is "reconciliation as well as accountability," adding that he wants to hold those in leadership accountable for issues that have been in this country from "colonialism to Jim Crow."
While he said he isn't calling on anyone to join him, he has garnered support from Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King, as well as fellow artists Rapper Lecrae, Marvin Sapp, contemporary Christian artist Natalie Grant and an avalanche of other gospel and secular artists, Christian Post reported.
The Gospel Music Association said in a statement it's working toward addressing Franklin's concerns.
"We would like to publicly acknowledge that we are deeply apologetic for the missteps that happened relating to the editing of Kirk Franklin’s Dove Awards acceptance speech," said Jackie Patillo, president and executive director of the Gospel Music Association. "We accept the responsibility of our error. Although completely unintentional, we understand it caused great harm and deeply wounded many in the African American and Gospel community."

Kirk Franklin Says He’s Boycotting The Dove Awards For Editing His Speech (Again), Lecrae Stands With Him
Gospel musician Kirk Franklin says he’s boycotting the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards because they edited out parts of his speech that addressed police brutality. Fellow gospel singer Lecrae says he’s standing with him. More inside…
Kirk Franklin is fed up with the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. The reason? Well, the association edited not one, but two of his acceptance speeches on different occasions, taking out very important issues he wanted to address before the masses.
So since they keep editing out his speeches, he’s done with them. For good. The "Lean On Me" musician discovered his acceptance speech was heavily edited for television, omitting key points from his message. Kirk won the Gospel Artist of the Year Award at the 50th Annual GMA Dove Awards held October 15th in Nashville. The awards show aired on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) on October 20th.
Apparently, they took out his remarks about police brutality, specifically what he said about Atatiana Jefferson, the 28-year-old black woman who was shot and killed inside her home by a Fort Worth, TX police officer.
Kirk then decided to post a video on Instagram to air out his frustrations with the Dove Awards committee and TBN reps. The thing is, this isn’t the first time the GMA & TBN edited his speech. In 2016, he won Best Gospel Artist at the Dove Awards and they edited his acceptance speech where he addressed the shooting of both police officers and black men (like Philando Castile) in general.
"I asked everyone in the audience and those viewing to join me in prayer for not only Atatiana's family, including her 8-year-old nephew who witnessed the killing, but also for the family of the police officer. Last week, during the airing of the awards on the same network, again, that part of my speech was edited out."
He said he made the decision to not attend any events that are affiliated with the Dove Awards, GMA or TBN until tangible plans are put in place.
He continued, “Not only did they edit my speech, they edited the African American experience."
The 49-year-old musician said he isn’t asking anyone to join him in the boycott. He said this is his personal choice to take a stand "and hold responsible those in positions of power to acknowledge the issues in our separate communities that have existed from colonialism to Jim Crow."
Peep his announcement below:

A post shared by Kirk Franklin (@kirkfranklin) on Oct 28, 2019 at 7:27am PDT
Several celebs responded to his video in the comments section, saying they were standing with him in the boycott.
"I only came (to the Doves) cause you came," gospel rapper Lecrae posted in his comments. "You know I’m out."
"I support you!," former Destiny's Child singer/gospel singer Michelle Williams said.
"Thank you Kirk. Standing with you," journalist Shaun King wrote.
Following Kirk's video being posted, the Gospel Music Association issued an apology.
"We would like to publicly acknowledge that we are deeply apologetic for the missteps that happened relating to the editing of Kirk Franklin's Dove Awards acceptance speech," said Jackie Patillo, the association president, in an official statement.
"It left a general perception that we are not concerned with key social issues that affect people of color. It is not our intent to disregard or silence any of our artists, and we are deeply saddened by this perception and are committed to change this."
Hmm...we def get they have to edit down speeches to make sure the show fits in the time slot, but it's very telling how both times, him addressing police brutality was edited it out. Thoughts?

How Christian Music Can Help Heal the Racial Divide
[caption id="attachment_422315" align="aligncenter" width="550"] (SCREENSHOT: YOUTUBE) TobyMac, Mandisa and Kirk Franklin team up for new video, "Bleed The Same," Jan 2018.[/caption] It's been nearly two years since Kirk Franklin's Gospel Artist of the Year acceptance speech at the 47th annual GMA Dove Awards challenged fellow Christian music artists to help promote racial healing. With recent studies proving that Americans view racism as a "big problem" in the nation, can Christian music help heal racial divides? The number of Americans who view racism as an issue in the country has doubled since 2011, according to the Pew Research Center. In findings released last August, Pew revealed that 58 percent of Americans now view racism as a problem, up from 28 percent six years ago. In 2016, Franklin, the recording artist, composer and head of the Fo Yo Soul Recordings gospel music label, received a standing ovation at one of the biggest award shows in Christian music when he prayed that industry peers would come together as believers to "control the narrative" concerning racism. "When police are killed, we need to say something. When black boys are killed, we need to say something, and when we don't say something, we are saying something," Franklin said at the Dove Awards in 2016. "I beseech you brothers in a spirit of humility, at our concerts, in our churches, I beg of you, let's ask the people that we are accountable and stand in front of — let's do it like Nineveh — and ask the people to pray with us for racial healing. Let's don't stay silent on it." Jackie Patillo, president and executive director of the Gospel Music Association who puts the Dove Awards together, remembers the moment well. "I couldn't have scripted that. It was a powerful moment," she told The Christian Post. "I was grateful that he was willing to address his music community and the world in such a bold, significant way. We are the light of the world, we are supposed to not be afraid to address any issue." The message proved to resonate with the Christian music community in instances like contemporary Christian music singer Mandisa using a portion of Franklin's speech in her song "Bleed the Same." "We all bleed the same, we're more beautiful when we come together," she sings on the track featuring TobyMac. "We all bleed the same, so tell me why, tell me why we're divided." While Franklin boldy prayed that the Christian music industry would do its part to end racism, a 2015 study published in the Journal of Communication and Religion revealed that collaboration between industry artists could help. "An implication of this study is that collaborative efforts of artists from both contemporary Christian music and gospel could de-racialize and therefore de-stigmatize each genre," the study, conducted by University of Cincinnati assistant professor of communication Omotayo Banjo and Kesha Morant Williams, assistant professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Berks, revealed. In recent months, a number of artists from different racial backgrounds and genres have come together to collaborate, including Matt Redman and Tasha Cobbs Leonard in the song "Gracefully Broken," released last year. In February, Elevation Worship also showcased collaborative efforts when the CCM worship group teamed up with Israel Houghton and gospel music artists Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Travis Greene, Tye Tribbett, Kierra Sheard, and The Walls Group to reimagine songs for an album called Elevation Collective. Jason Crabb is no stranger to collaborating with artists who do not look or sound like him musically. He previously joined Pastor Donnie McClurkin and the Clark family with his southern gospel singing group, The Crabb Family, to perform a gospel medley on TBN. Crabb explained the importance of Christian musicians coming together to help mend divides that exist. "If we are carriers of the Gospel and Christian music, the Good News, how could we not fight anything that divides us? It's a love issue — it has nothing to do with color, but media, politics have driven a divide in us," he told CP. "If we say we have the love of Christ in us, we are called to love everyone. Coming together with artists of all colors, genres, and styles is important as we show unity in the body of Christ and I think that's important." Across the country, most churches are segregated with eight-in-10 American congregants attending services at a place of worship represented by a single race, according to a 2014 Pew report. While a number of artists might be willing to collaborate, gospel singer Todd Dulaney believes the motivation for this type of collaboration begins in the church. "It has to start on Sunday mornings," said Dulaney, the singer whose album Your Great Name topped the Billboard Gospel Album Charts earlier this year. "If we just started by actually getting to know each other on Sunday mornings and not running from each other because it's not your own." Click here to read more.
