Jack

Bioshock AU

Thanks to Tenenbaum and the Adam in his veins Jack survived the explosion in Fontaines futuristics and gets away without even scars.

He barely remembers anything except how he woke up days later with Tenenbaum, Reggie and Atlas in a small apartment far away from the company. He doesnt know what they did to him before or who's son he must be just that he must have lived in the city before and through a traumatic accident lost all his memories.

However his body seems to still remember which makes it difficult for him to trust Tenenbaum and Atlas even though they seem like they mean no harm and are the only people he has. It frustrates him a lot which often results in an outburst of anger towards whoever is the unlucky one who is there. Thankfully he finds later on a parental figure also in Lonnie, Bill and his wife.

In the beginning, as they escape the building, he is barely 5 years old but through the Adam that still was in his system he quickly grows to a 10 year old in few months (first picture). It terrifies the boy and they start measuring his height on a wall with chalk lines to give some reassurance that it stopped.

Besides his small outbursts Jacks usually is a very cheerful and energetic child who always runs from one person to another in hope that he might be able to help them. He is nearly as strong as an avarage man and has a huge appetite since he needs the energy for his modified cells. Sometimes he also fights a certain craving for Adam even though he doesnt know thats what he wants but finds then often something to distract himself with.

He struggles to find his place in the group since there arnt many children and the adults often have no time for him. Later he becomes friends with Sophie as well as Eleanor once she is saved.

His first birthday gift was a little octopus plushie Tenenbaum sewed for him with special herbs that calm him down and he loves the plush animal dearly.

so, ryan KNEW jasmine had sold their baby to fontaine. he knew it was fontaine. he knew this. thats why he killed her

and he did NOTHING about it at the time,

and he has the fucking AUDACITY to victim-blame JACK for being BRAINWASHED

I KNOW RIGHT, I HATE HIM- I was actually going to make a post on this but we're doing it now anon.

I mean okay, if you look at the """"official"""" timeline Jasmine didn't die until an undefined date in 1959

So at that point, the riots had already happened, the war is going strong, Tenenbaum had already gone into hiding and Suchong had died in January so he's most likely dead by this point so it's not like Ryan had many outlets to actually go searching for information on the egg Jasmine sold. And he was pretty occupied with society crumbling beneath them all so granted it wouldn't be the highest priority.

This gets gunked up a bit in BioShock 2 where we have the audio log right after Ryan kills Jasmine and Sinclair was like "you should book a meeting with Lamb" as a sick burn- which implies Lamb wasn't in prison yet, but according to the timeline she got incarcerated in 1955- which was before Jack was even conceived so sdjfklsdfjsf

I feel like you could get away with pushing Jasmine's death back from '59 to 1957-58 and Ryan had the intention of following up the information to figure out exactly what happened but had to put it on the back burner with all the tragedies and problems stirring up and by the time the dust settles Tenebaum's already boogied and she was his main lead as being the one who handled the exchange with Jasmine.

(also not entirely relevant, but I go with the OG lore that Jasmine was bribed to get pregnant instead of it being an accidental pregnancy that Fontaine takes advantage of- the latter makes her feel more passive to me and I want her to be more active in her own life, though there are decent concepts you can pull out with either or. I also feel like the former makes more sense with the line of "promised it wasn't going to be a real pregnancy" because if it was an accident... then it was already a real pregnancy and "they'd just take the egg out once Mr. Ryan and I had" sound like it was more intentional).

SO you could argue he didn't really have the time or resource to actually launch a full investigation on the topic.

But let's put all of that to the side now because the audacity of this man I actually can NOT.

By the start of Hephaestus, Ryan knows who Jack is and he spends that time constantly belittling Jack and talking down to him for Jack not realizing he's a genetically modified 4-year old bastard son- Like that was your first guess, Mr. Ryan-

Like sir SHUT UP- I am going to strangle him with my own hands. He clearly has more than enough of an understanding of Jack's situation than Jack does, but uses that knowledge to lash out at Jack and put him down while still trying to kill him by proxy- and then followed up with Ryan telling Jack that he, his human trafficked abused and manipulated son, is his greatest disappointment when Ryan ran a city to the ground and pushed everyone who cared about him away??? That he hates a child that was taken and abused more than any of his mistakes??? He doesn't see Jack as an individual who's been insanely abused at the hands of his enemy- no instead he treats Jack as an unnatural feeble freak of a disappointment who spit in the face of his ideals- and is mad that an extension of himself could be so weak to be controlled so intensely by Fontaine.

It's really not surprising how poorly Ryan treats Jack- given how he either killed the people who were close to him (Jasmine, Bill) or ghosted them (Diane). Why would the way he treats people change just because him and Jack share blood.

The reveal feels very brutal and cold to me as it completely feels like Ryan is blaming Jack for what was done to him- I've seen people interpret the reveal seen as Ryan giving Jack a chance to break his conditioning- and I can see that. But that doesn't change that Ryan set it up as an ultimatum. It’s Ryan saying “you need to overcome this right now or I’m giving up on you”. There’s no help or assistance, he tells Jack to not be mind-controlled and set it up so that if it fails Ryan walks out of Jack’s life permanently- Giving Jack just one chance to “prove” his worth to Ryan.

And I feel like when talking about the reveal people often just gloss over the fact Ryan set the place to self-destruct beforehand??? Ryan's speech was half to have the last laugh- but it was also him stalling. His plan was: that if Jack killed him then the city would've self-destructed and killed everyone else- taking out Jack with him and making sure he never lost his city to anyone else. (And Ryan consciously turned off the vita chamber in his office, and since they were out of range of another he was making sure his and Jack's deaths would be permanent).

Ryan's ideal goal was a version of filicide-suicide. He just didn't monologue long enough.

(what he does in the reveal doesn't even help Jack- Fontaine did not care at all about Ryan's speech and makes no comment on it meaning he was always planning to drop Jack once he got Rapture. So what Ryan did, didn't make a difference, at that moment he had the power to actually help Jack and instead took that moment to spit in Jack's face and walk out of his life forever- the only person who helps Jack is Tenenbaum, by freeing him from what mind control she can regardless of where he is morally because she sees him as a person, not a tool and gives him the chance that they took from him)

Ryan never stopped trying to kill Jack. Even if he was too prideful to kill his biological kin with his own hands he never stopped trying to do it by proxy. He didn’t see Jack as a person, as his child that was bought, manipulated, and brainwashed- Just a tool he couldn’t stop, so Ryan adjusted things so he could have the last laugh and pretend he was still in control by giving the order for his own death.

I THINK ITS EDEN BUT IVE ALSO HEARD COLUMBIA SO JUST ILL USE THEM INTERCHANGEABLY. EDEN COLUMBIA IS RAN BY THIS RELIGIOUS NUT NAMED COMSTOCK

THE CITY BOOKER IS IN IS VERY RACIST AND NOT GOOD, COMSTOCK IS THE BAD KIND OF RELIGIOUS NUT. HE BELIEVES IN CHRISTIANITY BUT LIKE THE NOT GOOD KIND YKNOW THE ONE THAT SAYS GAYS ARENT HUMAN AND POC ARENT HUMAN AND JUST. THE SHITTY BIBLE BASICALLY. THERES A GROUP CALLED THE VOX POPULI THATS MADE UP OF OPPRESSED PEOPLE AND THEYRE LIKE A REBELLION BASICALLY. THERES A THING WHERE COMSTOCK DOESNT WANT BOOKER TO FIND ELIZABETH/ANNE FOR REASONS I HAVE NO IDEA, I ACTUALLY KNOW THE LEAST ABOUT BIOSHOCK INFINITE, THIS GAME, OUT OF ALL OF THEM SO TAKE BITS OF THIS INFO WITH GRAINS OF SALT. This is Big Mama and Swamp Mama, they're lesbian grandmas. Ive had Big Mama for some time now, and a lot of people on fr tend to love her too just for her silly name.

Phoenix and Edgeworth are longtime favorites of mine both in their flight rising lore given to them and in the fact that Edgeworth is so massive next to Phoenix its ridiculous.

Plasmid, Vigor, and Rapture are all Bioshock based dragons. Plasmid and Vigors names are actually backwards and I just never fixed them because I thought it was funny. Plasmid has been with me for six years thus far because my heart couldn't take seeing the ugly little baby in the auction house named Disappointment sold for fodder. Vigor was given to me by someone leaving fr and Rapture was just an impulse buy they are a polycule <3

Barney and Benrey are brothers Ive had them nearly as long as Ive had Plasmid I mean look at them they're perfect mostly Barney actually desperately needs clothes. I think my Benrey is the oldest Benrey currently on flight rising last I checked too, I just think thats neat.

And ofc theres Jack of Walten fame, this is one of two possible outfit plans I have for him. Hes a super basic dragon in terms of genes and color but I love him a lot <3 he needs a Rosemary.

well it could be a lot of things but ieee like to focus on the themes of family, choice, and self. especially with family not always being blood 0]. so in the first game you play as jack wynand, resident 4 year old man. throughout the game, he has no choices, and neither does the player. the Only choice you and he have is whether or not to save the little sisters (genetically modified little girls who are functionally immortal, but you can kill them by removinf the slugs that have been implanted in their bellies). you never really think much of this being the only choice though be cause well ur playing viddy game!!! but after the twist (which is rly good to experience the first time, unfortunately i wasnt able to experience it fully 😔 played most of the game when i was like 8 and i already knew when i for real played it fully last year) its just kind of like an Oh. and then you have the thing of well!! now that i know what has been done to me and what is happening here do i really want to continue/start (depending on how u played the game from the start) being nice? and if you do save every little sister you encounter you get this really nice and satisfying ending of jack adopting 5 of the little sisters he saved and then dying of old age, surrounded by his loved ones and having a real family who loves him and he loves them.

and then for the second game you know from the start what you are (a big daddy, one of the first), what happened to you (your assigned little sister was stolen fron you, her mother forced you to commit suicide in front of her) and why youre alive again (eleanor, your little sister (not little anymore) has revived you. she made sure nothing like what happened before could happen again, and she needs your help). as you go through rapture you have more choices (not many, but they're still important) and more people whose fates are in your hands. gracie, who hates you and blames you for eleanor for being made into a little sister (gracie, who loved eleanor as a daughter, who was destroyed by eleanors disappearance, and who was fed lies by lamb, eleanors mother abd resident cult leader, lies about it being your fault), stanley, who is the real person at fault for why you are a big daddy, and why eleanor is a little sister (thats really it. hes weasel-y and pathetic), and gil, who was the one who made you and eleanor into what you are (gil, who regrets it deeply and worked the rest of his life to try to help eleanor as much as possible, to try to fix what he did to her). you can choose the path of revenge, killing those who wronged you and your daughter, or you can forgive and leave them be. depending on how you choose, eleanor will be the one to carry out the deeds. if you harvest her sisters, she will do the same, if you kill those who wronged you, she will kill her mother. if you save her sisters, she will do the same, and if you let (at least two of three) those who wronged you live, she will give her mother another chance to change as well. blah blah blah im rambling too much. morality and choices abd family etc etc

Some (un)popular bioshock opinions real quick (SPOILERS):

- Andrew Ryan and Fontaine are equally bad

- Fontaine and Atlas are canonically the same person and thats that

- Atlas is a terrible person who did terrible things with NO good reason

- Jack should be protected at all costs

- Jack is probably ace, at least for now, he is 4 after all (this is mostly a headcanon)

- Atlas and Jack should not be shipped, he’s basically his dad

- Tenenbaum and Jack should not be shipped, she’s basically his mom

- Booker is a trash father, but leave him alone for now guys, he sacrificed himself and whatnot - go ham on Comstock tho

- Eleanor is AMAZING and super badass

- Sinclair didn't deserve any of that

- Fontaine and Ryan were such trash fathers that Jack went and became his own dad

hi im gonna get mad about an 11 year old game called Bioshock for a sec

had to put it under a cut cuz it got real long

i recently watch my sister sam play through bioshock for the first time and i know this has probably been talked about to death but GOD the final boss is horrible for So Many Reasons

1) its a big dumb generic monster which is exactly what u wanted after going thru an amazing story about human pride and fallacy and corruption

2) its out of character imo for fontaine to just start splicing himself while he’s waiting for u to come get him like what did he get bored or something?? he knew or i thought he knew that splicing was gonna mess u up! like he says shit like “ur too spliced up to think” and calls splicers freaks throughout the game

3) i love when boss battles have annoying grunt enemies and screaming drones thrown in there to take ur health down aheh

4) fontaine again like seriously dude what was ur plan?? did u think u could undo the damage done to ur genes?? did u think u were gonna start a business and become a tycoon on the surface looking like this hunka mess trying to be a statue?? did u think.....did u think?? eh??

5) i feel like i would have preferred a battle of wits with fontaine in some form because he may act like some meat head but hes not stupid! hes the mastermind behind the events leading into the player character coming to rapture, he’s the one who made suchong make a jacked up baby that ages rapidly and sent him away only to made him crash a plane into the ocean with some activation words! 

its a nonsense convoluted plan thats really kinda insane actually, but it worked didnt it?? i guess u could say “well suchong made the baby and the mental conditioning” yeah well who told suchong to do it? fontaine did!

side note i dont get how in the saving little sisters ending it shows them all grown up and holding jack’s old man hand even though by the previous logic of suchong’s experiment (”at age 2 he has the physique of a 19 year old”) he should have been old and dead like maybe 6 years after bringing the girls up to the surface that makes no sense

back to fontaine, not only did he have this crazy scheme that worked HE’S A CON MAN! that’s his big thing! he was conning people as fontaine years before rapture and he was conning YOU as ATLAS the WHOLE GAME! it doesnt make any sense that he would just run away and splice himself the second he dropped the con. its possible he was full of himself and thought u didnt pose much of a threat but the splicing is still just, out there for him. i want an antagonist that knows how to play the game and doesnt just go for brawn as his first option (he couldve probably beat u up without the adam anyway)

throw in like, a puzzle or a mind game or something! i get introducing a new gameplay would kinda break the flow of the game but theres also only two gameplay types, Combat and Hacking, so it could use something less repetitive

i love this game a lot its one of my favorites but goooooooooooood.

who’s your fav character? mines a cross between tenenbaum and Atlas (idk y I like him bc he broke my heart in Burial at Sea, maybe bc his accent is cute). also who is the hardest character to draw?

agh thats a tough one! I love them all for different reasons so it’s hard to pick a fave….But i’d probably go with Jack, on the basis that thinking about him warms my heart and also i’m just very attached to him which is inevitable when you actually play as a character, I think. Also, he just ticks all the boxes for everything i’m interested in, god I have such a field day with Jack!  his story is so heartbreaking and there’s so much you can just,, sink your teeth into about him! I can’t believe it took me this long to get into bioshock because everything in it is exactly my cup of tea 

But then there’s Tenenbaum who is just…. so refreshing. I’ve never come across a character like her before, her story and redemption are so good. I’m in love with her personality, she’s weird and awkward but in a non quirky/cutesy way like you’d usually get with most female characters in games, and I can’t stress enough what a breath of fresh air that is. She’s just an objectively cool character and I love her to bits.And I do like Atlas/Fontaine too, not as in, i’d like to hang out with him or I think he’s a good guy lol, but as a character he’s very good (it’s like, I enjoy him in a different sense to how I do Jack and Tenenbaum). My answer is already very long (sorry i always do this) so I won’t get into talking about him, but one reason I can enjoy his character is because he is without a doubt, my absolute fav to make fun of. He’s so easy to make the target of any joke because he’s ridiculous. So yeah, he’s my fav to pick on.  Aaaaand the hardest character to draw is definitely Ryan, his hair is hell and I’m very bad at drawing moustaches and suits, I just can’t have fun drawing him he’s a ball ache. But also, I struggle to draw Jack in a sense that i’m never happy with how I draw him, he always turns out more younger/boyish than intended.. but thats something I can work on.

Yo welcome! I am so late for this fandom but i am happy that someone is still doing content for it (and i have no one to talk to about this thing lul). Also have you ever drawn like evil and badass looking Jack?Like the sweet boi is cool and all but what about the bad ending Jack (i got the worst ending the first time i played lmao)?Btw I was wondering why Jack has brown hair in the first game and in the dlc he is like blond wtf.

I got into bioshock a few months back and was really surprised at how many people were still making content for it!!! There’s a handful of people I have to blame for pushing me over into being casually into it to being Big into it haha. This fandom is honestly so great I love everyone in it to bits 

aaand I haven’t drawn evil Jack BUT I do have a comic planned that involves him that I can’t wait to work on >:) I used to not like bad end Jack because to me Jack is Good … but then I realised that bad end Jack is kinda hilarious because he’s so over the top evil, shoves slugs up his butt (at least thats what it looks like from what ive seen), probably eats people, and has nukes (????) the contrast between him in the good ending and in the bad ending is so extreme I love it :’’D Also, I can’t decide which is better- Fontaine being disappointed in Jack for being this loving heroic being, or Fontaine being like “oh no.. I have created a monster that’s somehow even worse than me” :’) also, yh there’s loads of inconsistencies with character models and whatnot. I can’t really tell Jack’s colours, he’s just so… beige lol. So I guess that means we’re open to pick and choose? I’ve always imagined him as having mousy blonde-ish hair bordering on brown…beige (I imagine him to have the same hair colour as his mum but a little bit darker/duller) and lovely brown eyes
