December 2016 popped off with a fierce and unapologetic bang as US performance artist /activist /poet Alok Vaid-Menon joined forces with some of South Africa’s trans and gender-non- conforming artists in a creative collaboration titled “Femme in Public”.
“Femme in Public” saw the Vaid-Menon team up with Cape Town stylists, designers, photographers, musicians, writers, activists and performance artists to document a live fashion protest across the streets of Cape Town. Superbalist fashion maven Gavin Mikey Collins co-ordinated and directed the shoot that saw the likes of Umlilo, Kieron Jina, Sandiso Ngubane, Githan Coopoo, Vuyisani Bisholo, Quaid “Queezy” Heneke and Joshua Allen disrupt the heteronormative and colonial gaze with their unwavering celebration of femininity.
“With the recent advent of the ‘transgender tipping point,’ representation of trans people in the media continues to be of people who are binary (identifying as a ‘man’ or a ‘woman,’), white, and conventionally attractive,” said Vaid-Menon “My work is about creating more representations of gender non- conforming people of color who have been and continue to be at the front of the movement for gender liberation.”
Photographers and videographers Jabu Newman, Alexis ‘Shakalulu’ Strimenos, Charles Mackenzie, Alex Hopkins (Loure Group) and Miguel Vanas who are from all over the world but currently based in Cape Town helped bring this celebration to life visually.
This resulted in a photo shoot for the gawds, workshops and a performance event by Alok Vaid-Menon featuring Umlilo, Kieron Jina, Sandi Blouse and Shaheed Martin at Cape Town’s Deuce Bar. ‘Femme in Public II’ took place at Industry in Johannesburg featuring Umlilo, Fela Gucci, Kieron Jina and Tazme Pillay.

#FilmFriday #ZA - Jabu Nadia Newman
Photo: Chris Kets
Feminism, sexuality and politics are the three topics most discussed and presented in Jabu’s work, from her photography to her films and web series, The Foxy Five, an intersectional feminist show from a black South African perspective through the voices of five women. Jabu started writing The Foxy Five in 2015 during Fees Must Fall, a protest in response to the proposed rise of education fees in South Africa, with the show later developing into an archive where the topics black women in South Africa are talking about today can be accessed: “I wanted to show how the political was personal and how the youth of South Africa were far from apathetic. I wanted to give black women an understanding of feminism from their perspective and try to create truthful and sincere representations of us.” Born out of sense of despair and hopelessness towards political and social injustices, the process of writing the show allowed Jabu to replace those disparate feelings with ones of love and strength in sharing the stories of herself and others as they discuss concepts and ideas surrounding sexuality, gender, race, class and politics.

Meet the filmmaker bringing intersectional feminism to South Africa: Jabu Nadia Newman
Jabu Nadia Newman found her critical voice as a writer, filmmaker and photographer during South Africa’s student uprising of 2015 and 2016 when she became involved in University of Cape Town’s #FeesMustFall protest. Drawing from the women she met through the protest, Jabu, who was studying film and politics at UCT at the time, decided to put her degree on pause. In it’s place the filmmaker struck upon the idea of defining and representing intersectional feminism in South Africa’s post-apartheid landscape through a semi-autobiographical web series The Foxy Five.
