How do you handle making mistakes during races?

"So making mistakes during races is something that I've learned over the years to try and get better once it happened. Well, first you need to try and do no mistakes. That's the first thing. But if one mistake happened, the most important is not to judge yourself, not think about the mistake again, because what has happened has happened. You can't change what has happened. You need to straightaway move forward and try and do the best to recover that mistake and straightaway think about this and not come back on it, judge yourself and do another mistake, because this is what leads you to do a worse performance than what you are supposed to be doing if you are not thinking about that mistake. So there's a lot of small exercises that you can do. For example, if you play games, if you do a mistake and then rage in a way, this is when you are judging yourself for the mistake and you're not focused on what's coming up."

How do you mentally prepare for a race?

"To prepare mentally for a race. What is very important to me is the routine is how I go into all the certain details, the preparation, it's very important for me to feel good arriving to a race, to know I have done everything that I had to do in terms of physical preparation, in terms of mental preparation, in terms of preparation with the car, with engineers. There is a very important balance to have between my work on myself that I'm doing at my training centre every day when we are in between races and the work that I do at the factory like we are in today, that's a very difficult mix to have because when I'm doing the work with the engineers, I can't do the work on myself, but I have a very important schedule that I put on myself and I say, okay, this day I'm doing this, this, that, and then I can prepare with the engineers for the car and everything else. And yeah, I think we found a happy balance. And I think for everyone it's important to find a happy balance in where you put the effort and when you find that happy balance, which is hard to do, then you feel good."

What motivates you?

"What motivates me every day to push, to wake up and go to work every single day and to be the best. I would say that's what motivates me. It's always been my dream to compete at the highest level, and now that I'm at the highest level, I want to be the best at it. And yeah, I'm a competitor as nature. I think my family have told me that pretty well, and in the family there is a bit of a sense of you need to do your best to win. Competition is priority. When I play table tennis or bowling with my dad, he's going to try everything to be winning and every single trick, every single time. And there is that very high intensity pressure that goes into it. And yeah, if you don't win, I don't know. I got this sense of shame inside me that I didn't manage to be the best and that has to be a priority thing for me. And yeah, I think this is what has led me to compete in Formula One."
