Balfour Beatty wins design for major M58 link road
Balfour Beatty has secured the job to provide key designs for a major link road in Wigan Borough.
Wigan Council has selected Balfour Beatty to help shape the borough’s M58 link road, which will connect J26 M6 with Wigan town centre via the A49 link road.
This will open up new opportunities for housing and development.
Balfour Beatty will work with the council to offer design and construction advice and develop more efficient proposals, which will aim to minimise disruption and provide a scheme that is value for money.
Following the design process, the council will appoint a construction contractor with a view to start on site in 2021.
Leader of Wigan Council, Coun David Molyneux said: “In order to ensure we can deliver a successful scheme, we have appointed Balfour Beatty early in the process. ”
Balfour Beatty project director, Will Singleton, said: “This scheme will help to alleviate traffic on Ormskirk Road – one of Wigan borough’s busiest routes – while vastly improving connectivity for the travelling public.”
The council has already started some advanced works to prepare for the link road including protecting and diverting utility services and re-locating a local rugby pitch, which has resulted in the creation of two additional full-sized pitches and a smaller training pitch.

What a fun day with J-pod spent on the west side of San Juan! The day started with dense fog in Rosario Strait, making for an eerily beautiful setting. Before sailing into the thick of it, we were able to skirt the coastlines of Washington Park and Burrows Island where we found several mature bald eagles and the Burrow’s Island Lighthouse. We cut across Rosario and cleared the fog at south Lopez where we found many pigeon guillemots, a lone bald eagle, and ample bull kelp! We continued the slow cruise past Swirl Rock where we found a great blue heron and several harbor seals taking advantage of the exposed intertidal. Onwards towards Salmon Bank we went, with a brief glimpse of a traveling minke whale near the navigational buoy. While the minke may have been illusive, J pod was not! The pod was spread out along the western coast of San Juan Island, in active forage mode. We spent some time with Cookie (J38) as he actively fished at the surface, and Mike (J26) as he showed off with some impressive pec-slaps before coming to give us all a closer look. Following him was baby Tofino (J56) and crew! This little one was spunky, showing off with back flops, tail slaps, and splashes at the surface. In total, we got to visit with many members of J pod with snow capped mount baker making for a stunning backdrop. On the way home, we stopped at Goose Island to visit with nesting double-crested cormorants and glaucous-winged gulls. We even spotted some fuzzy little glaucous-winged gull chicks! As we rounded the northern coastline of Lopez Island, we arrived in time to witness the Samish ferry assist with a flipped kayak near the ferry dock. They looked to have the situation under control, a good save by the hard-working crew. We continued on thorough Peavine Pass, and stopped at seal rocks to find two bald eagles, a mom-pup harbor seal pair, and a few more mature seals. As we rounded the rocks, it became clear that one of the eagles had scored a meal, blood streaked in gruesome fashion across the rocks. Upon closer inspection of the photos taken, it looked to be the afterbirth of a recent harbor seal birth! Gnarly! With a thin band of lingering fog in Rosario Strait, we opted to take Bellingham Channel home, soaking in some final views of Mount Baker looming over the islands.
Port Angeles
The warm days brought in a change in the straits ushering in some morning fog. We delayed departure for an hour to give the fog some time to dissipate. We started out with a clearing but soon had no choice but to head into the fog.We passed a few rhinoceros auklets and glaucous winged gulls. Checking out an underwater feature called the rockpile, we searched very carefully for any signs of whales. With nothing seeming to be happening there we ventured out to the northwest.Traveling in the fog was like being in a different place and time but we continued on. Our search took us still further west where we found humpback whales all over. It helped that the fog had suddenly lifted and we could see for miles. We had to keep running from one side of the boat to the other to keep up with all the whales popping up around us. We had one definite id of a beautiful white fluked humpback whale with a number of MMZ0041. We got to see lots of fluking and had some really close passes to the boat where we could hear them exhaling. They were traveling east with the tide and as our journey had taken us quite a ways we stayed with the whales as long as we coud which was extra nice as they were heading in the direction of home anyway. We had one last bird sighting of a whirligig of phalaropes. With blue skies and following seas it was time to head for home.
