the way you talk about food feels like nara smith

This ask made me laugh, but seriously, I don’t have the luxury of time enough to make all of my food absolutely, 100%, from scratch, and I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation for the majority of people living in today’s world. I saw a post a while ago that tried to make the point that people like Nara Smith aren’t special for making food from scratch, that it’s been the main way of cooking for the history of humanity, and yes, this is very true, but Nara’s content is notable (and popular) because she goes to such extreme lengths to create food products from scratch. I think that if I sent a video from an influencer like Nara to my grandmother, she’d ask me why this girl didn’t have better things to do than to make bubblegum from scratch, and I’d have to admit that she had a point. I think that it’s important to remember that Nara is privileged enough to have the time in her day to do this sort of unnecessarily performative (and yes, often fun) food preparation, and that the lifestyle she’s displaying isn’t realistic, accurate, or even really aspirational. I’m assuming that this ask was intended as a compliment, and I’m flattered, but I just want to point out that I’m not ever going to be making yoghurt or preparing a sandwich in a dress from J’Amemme—I’m usually still in my pyjamas, hastily throwing ingredients together, whilst simultaneously talking through Joy’s essay on the phone with her, and trying to finish off the last of my reading list. It’s not a glamorous look, but it’s the look that I’d like you to keep in mind when you read my recipes and think of me, because it’s the reality for a busy student who desperately wants to still eat at least reasonably healthily.

The challenge for me while shooting this fashion editorial was to keep the images consistent in terms of one look to another yet create them in a way they become captivating. I chose a high key lighting setup consisted of my key light on large @elinchrom_ltd beauty dish with silver reflector and white socks with f11 A fill from bottom right on a 20 degree honey comb grid . At 1 stop below my key. I placed 2 backlights at full power hitting into the @vflatworld white side and placed the black side in either side of the model to create that contrast and detail . My white backdrop was about a stop over my key. This setup also created a nice edge light effect on my model… for more tips on lighting #followme on Instagram.
