Hmm! This is difficult, because I still remember most of my snippets in Finnish, but I'll try to get three in English and in Finnish. I have pretty good memory, though, but the grammar might be off. We'll see.
English:
1. "I had forgotten how much light there is in the world, till you gave it back to me."
(Ursula K. Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea)
2. Stories may well be lies, but they are good lies that say true things, and can sometimes pay the rent.
(Neil Gaiman)
3. "someone, I say
someone will remember us
even in another time"
(Sapfo, I guess - not sure about the exact wording though)
Finnish:
1. graniitin kovaan kylkeen / kovin harva tarttua tohtii / joku jäkälä vain / jokin kirpeä yrtti
ja sipulin silmät itkee / meren suolaista vettä
vaan auringon valossa graniitti on lämmin / ja hoivaa lempeämmin
(lasten kuvakirjasta Maijan aakkoset, josta opin lukemaan)
(Alki Zei, kirjasta Villikissa katsoo lasin takaa)
3. "Älä sano mitään.
Jos sanot sanankin,
en enää tiedä mitä ajattelet."
(Kai Nieminen, kokoelmasta Kiireettä)
list 3-5 snippets of literature/media that live in your head rent free to the point where you have them memorized. write them down from memory! (try not to cheat!)
@black-lodge-gatekeeper tagged me in this! oh boy i havent been tumblr-tagged in years. I’m embarrassed by my answers already and I’m not even sure what I’m about to write at this point. Let’s see…
1. it goes like “Why beautiful, if lame… why lame, if beautiful” as one of Machado de Assis’ asshole characters wonders about some girl. I want to say it’s from Bras Cubas’ Posthumous Memories. Which also has one of the greatest first lines of any book.. something like “I dedicate this book the the worm that first feasted on my cold flesh”
2. not sure about the english translation but “it wasn’t before you that i bowed, but before all of human suffering” from Crime and Punishment
3. from a book about the first emperor of Brazil, a snippet about how he kept his dead, mummified stillborn son inside an armoire, i don’t know the exact words (and i would have to translate them so they wouldn’t be exact anyway) but that fact lives with me, because every now and then i need to shock people with random knowledge
4. “im going away to Pasargada, for there I am friends with the King. There I’ll have the women I want, in the bed of my choosing” from Manuel Bandeira’s Pasargada, also a rough translation
5. “No one witnessed the burial of your last chimera” Augusto dos Anjos’ “intimate verses”
6. Ill just say I have a separate cortex just for Simpsons quotes, like “No one ever said ‘Italy’ ” from Scorpio and “my diagnosis is.. a BAD BABYSITTER” (also translations so maybe not exactly the english original)
This was kind of a revelation. I have a much better memory for texts in portuguese. For english texts I don’t have a quot-y memory, I can remember the stories but not so much the exact words, which is weird. Except for stuff like “so long, and thanks for all the fish” which they turned into a song so thats cheating. So I’m sorry for all the portuguese quotes. All in all my memory for exact quotes is pretty bad
I’m tagging @drjohnweston @katbelleinthedark and @schaudwen if they’re up to it!

Halutessasi selvittää alueesi ilmanpuhtauden ovat jäkälät oiva keino siihen. Alueen männyissä kasvavat bioindikaattorit kertovat ilmanlaadusta ja mahdollisesta laskeumasta alueella. Tutkiessasi rungossa eläviä jäkäliä, voit unohtaa puolen metrin alapuolella olevan alueen (esimerkiksi koirien pissit vaikuttavat kyseisen korkeuden tuloksiin).
