Johsnavi and pumpkin spice latte adventures
“This is stupid.” Teeth chattered together against thebreeze that delicately dipped the city’s temperature to just under Usnavi’scomfort level. With his hat fastened tight against his head and his puffed coatsipped over his mouth one would think the tropical man could retain some heat. No, he was as transparent as paper when it came to body warmth. Only fiveminutes after stepping out of his house, Usnavi was mentally checking off allthe reasons why he regretted going outside in the middle of a chilly Octoberday.
Just as he thought about reaching for his apartment keys ahand gently scooped his and laced his larger fingers between Usnavi’s tired andslightly calloused ones. Johan was dressed fairly lightly, a recycled greensort of jacket and red scarf he had knit himself which would explain itsunnaturally long size even for a scarf. It looked as though he was going forLenny Kravitz’s look of over sized scarf. “You said we weren’t going to spendall day indoors, we need to get that good ol’ vitamin D.”
“Its New York, the only vitamin out here is iron and smog.”He grumbled, his face turning a bit red as Johan started pulling him a long gently.“Only reason I’m doing this is because I wanted to pick up some pumpkin spicefor the café.”
Johan shook his head almost disapprovingly, his lips turneddown into a small frown. “Falling into the basic trend of pumpkin spiced thing, its all just a ploy by—“
“Big business, commercialism, unobtainable popularity andsingularity that is killing the individual originality of people” his Dominicanboyfriend recited coolly. It was everything he had heard before. He eyed Johanwho’s frown turned into a small open smile, he looked as though he was going totear up all of the sudden.
“Babe” He pulled Usnavi a bit closer and squeaked with asmall delightful chuckle. “You know me so well.”
Given, they had been dating for nearly a year. Usnavi wouldlike to think he knew Johan as well as anyone would. Without much morecomplaints about weather and the killer known as Capitalism they walked downthe street. They took a couple of back avenues around Haven down to 181ststreet. In the mid 80s to early 2000s 181st was an insane placefilled with stores that were three to four floors high. Busy shops used to linethe blocks now? It was pretty empty aside from the McDonalds on one side of thestreet and the Banana Republic on the other.
It was sad at first, to Usnavi, that the place had changedto much. The crowds of families running into places like Lola K and J&J,affordable places for the low income to middle families where entire outfitscould be made for just dollars. Then strolls to the nearby cinema that wasclosed down for good… Instead there were big businesses moving in, moreexpensive stores pushing out the mom and pop shops.
There was a shared sadness between the men when Johan spokeup, breaking Usnavi from his internal dialogue. “So where are you picking upthis overly consumed seasonal spice?”
“There is a place just up the block.” He looked up at Johanwho was already eyeing something else. Usnavi found his line of sight andsighed, of course. A juice bar.
“And why again are we getting this? Your coffee is amazingas is.”
“Well …I was thinking I could amp up the coffee a little, you know appeal to the youthful tastes.” Said the corner store owner (not acoffee shop owner).
Johan arched a brow and have him a small, almost knowingsmirk. “So this has nothing to do with Sonny walking in with a pumpkin spicelatte from Starbucks?”
A hot pang of competitiveness washed over Usnavi. “If I makepumpkin spice, Sonny will never spend money at Four-bucks again.” He startedquickly marching towards a bulk shop, tugging his tall giggling boyfriendalong. Of course Johan saw the hilarity of it, Usnavi didn’t solely sell coffeebut his pride for his store being a gem of his neighborhood was a wicked thrall.
Johan went along with Usnavi’s little pride trip. He boughta ten dollars’ worth of pumpkin spice and walked out almost giddy to try andwin over his cousin, who’s opinion yes was valued, wasn’t exactly the bestopinion of coffee around. As they were walking back, hand in hand, the cold wasreally getting to Usnavi now. His teeth clicked together, his fingers that werewoven around Johan’s trembled loosely. Johan paused for a second and looked himover, then came to a stop. “You know if you want to best the competition youcould figure them out.”
Usnavi turned and noticed Johan and paused in front of aStarbucks. Pain shined through his face, “You too, Johan?”
“Tone down the face Caesar, I’m just saying you’re cold andlooking to outdo your cousin’s and 90% of millennial America’s favorite coffeechain.”
“—and you want to feel hip with the kids, what happened toall that bullshit about consumerism, hm?”
Johan shrugged a bit, “Starbucks is great, they work with veterans, have great benefits, great place for college students. I put my beliefs asidefor the greater good” He leaned over and pulled the door open, and held it forhis man.
With a small huff, Usnavi walked into the danger zone of hiscompetition mumbling under his breath. “…lo sincero que piensa que es…” Usnavilooked around sideeyeing every teen with their Macbook pro opened, headphoneson, fingers skimming iPhones as they absently consumed their drinks without asecond thought. He didn’t even realized Johan had ordered a drink and held itout to him. “What you want me to drink this shit?”
“It’s a nice hot drink, mm steaming and warm.” He took a sipand made a face.
“What?” Usnavi wondered if the coffee was good? Oh god, whatif he actually couldn’t compete. He ripped the coffee from Johan’s hand andtook a shaky sip waiting to be crippled by the flavor and… “huh…you know…itkinda tastes like shit.”
“I can’t believe you think you need to compete with this, babe.”
“Fuck it.” Usnavi started marching out, “I’ve got myreceipt, I’m getting my ten bucks back.”
( @lilldov I know this was you)
