Just about everyone is giving smouldering looks in this cast photo, except for David Blue and Elyse Levesque are in full "Sears Portrait Studio" mode.

309 - Jeffrey (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
We're back again with another episode chosen by one of our sponsor-tier subscribers from Patreon, this time with a bit of 1990s gay cinema! Thank you Lance for bringing us all to 1995's Jeffrey! Adapted from Paul Rudnick's Off-Broadway smash play, the concept of an "AIDS comedy" made it difficult to get produced, but ultimately unique once it reached theatre audiences. Despite playing to a limited audience on film and taking a broad comedic approach to the culture surrounding gay life in the 1990s, Patrick Stewart's performance as an interior designer diagnosed with AIDS earned some bit of buzz.
This episode, we talk about the career of Paul Rudnick and the types of gay cinema that emerged in this moment of American independent filmmaking. We also talk about Stewart's surprising lack of awards history, Bryan Batt's performance as Stewart's lover, and Christine Baranski hosting a "hoedown for AIDS."
Topics also include TikTok smash videos, "start my orange for me," and Debra Monk talking gay stuff.

If Robert Oppenheimer was at university in 2023, just as an ordinary student, he would definitely wear Doc Martens and listen to the Smiths.

Parasite (1982)
"That thing on your stomach..."
"A new strain of parasite. I deserve it, in a way. I created it."
"For the Merchants? Why?"
"I thought for the government. They're so mixed up with the Merchants now, they work for one another. This 'thing', as you call it, is growing. It's dormant now but it will soon grow larger... and kill me."

Alright, so I've almost finished watching all of Mike Flanagan's Netflix series (only The Midnight Club to go) and I got to thinking which of the Stargate alum would I most like to see join the ensemble of actors he uses repeatedly.
I think the first choice is undoubtedly David Hewlett. He's got an impressive horror resume and has worked multiple times with Vincenzo Natalti as well as Guillermo Del Toro. He's a fantastic character actor who I think would be a fabulous fit.
My next choice would be David Nykl. I've seen him play drama and light comedy, and I've seen him convincingly play the heavy. He's got a chameleon-like quality where he looks and sounds like a different person in his various roles.
For SG-1 I've torn between Corin Nemec and Christopher Judge. I've seen Corin in lots of different kinds of projects and I've loved him in everything I've seen. Chris Judge just has this presence you know? His voice work over the years has been outstanding but I just miss seeing his beautiful self.
SGU is a cheat because either Robert Carlyle or Lou Diamond Philips would be the bees knees. I'd love to see Brian J. Smith though. He can do the hero stuff, but he's also got this oddly sweet/innocent quality about him. I'd love to see him stretch with a quality director and script to see what he could really do.
What about you guys? What do you think?
