This was supposed to just be a rough sketch, but then I started getting really invested in it.
I hadn't initially intended to include so many picture book characters, but the nostalgia was overwhelming. Does anyone remember the animated short films produced by Weston Woods? My local library used to have a bunch of them on the Scholastic VHS tapes from the late 90s. (I know some shorts were released on the Children's Circle VHS tapes back in the 80s (🎶 Come on along! Come on along! Join the caravan!), and some were packaged in Sammy's Story Shop in 2008.)
Characters:
Max, from Where the Wild Things Are, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak
Peter, from The Snowy Day, written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats
Brother Bear and Sister Bear, from The Berenstain Bears series, written and illustrated by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Pooh and Piglet, from the Winnie-the-Pooh books, by A. A. Milne, illustrated by E. H. Shepard
Owen, from Owen, written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes.
Mouse, from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Joffe Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond
Louis, from The Trumpet of the Swan, by E. B. White
Mr. Toad, from The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame, based on the illustrations by E. H. Shepard
Mr. Tumnus, from The Chronicles of Narnia series, by C. S. Lewis
Pippi and Mr. Nilsson, from the Pippi Longstocking books, by Astrid Lindgren
Willy Wonka, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl, based on the illustrations by Quentin Blake
Matilda, from Matilda, by Roald Dahl, based on the illustrations by Quentin Blake (with an homage to the Mara Wilson movie)
Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, from Peter Pan, by J. M. Barrie
Merlin and Archimedes, from The Sword in the Stone, by T. H. White, based on the illustrations by Dennis Nolan
Pinocchio, from Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi, based on the illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti
Alice, White Rabbit, and Cheshire Cat, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by John Tenniel
Rupert Bear, from the Rupert stories, created by Mary Tourtel and continued by Alfred Bestall, John Harrold, Stuart Trotter, and others.
Arthur Read, from the Arthur series, written and illustrated by Marc Brown
Tin Woodman and Scarecrow, from the Land of Oz series, by L. Frank Baum, based on the illustrations by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill
The Cat in the Hat, from The Cat in the Hat, written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss
a frog on a flying lily pad, from Tuesday, written and illustrated by David Wiesner
Charlotte, from Charlotte's Web, by E. B. White

Hello! I adore your page. Can I ask just where you've learned so much about the age of sail and in such fine detail? I dream of reaching a similar level of expertise, but have struggled to pin down a really good book/site/archive for such references. Thank you!
Hi, thanks for the compliment. There really isn't much of a secret, apart from reading and going to the relevant museums. Museums often have archives where you can get lots of books to read. But many people don't know exactly where to start. So I've put together a little list here to make it easier.
 B. Lavery, Nelson’s Navy. The Ships, Men and Organisation. 1793-1815 New Edition    (London 2012)    B. Ireland, Naval Warfare in the Age of Sail. War at Sea 1756-1815 ( London 2000)    N. Tracy, Nelson’s Battles. The Art of Victory in the Age of Sail (London 1996)    D.Davies, A brief history of Figthing Ships (London 1996)    A. Lambert, War at Sea in the Age of Sail 1650- 1850 (London 2000)    G. Wells, Naval Customs and traditions (London 1930)    P. Goodwin, HMS Victory, Pocket Manuel 1805 (London 2015)    J. Eastland a. I. Ballantyne, HMS Victory. First Rate 1765 (London 2011)    J. Bennett, Sailing into the Past. Learning from replica Ships (London 2009)    M. P. Smith, Terror at Sea. True Tales of shipwrecks, cannibalism, pirates, fire at sea & otherdire disasters in the 18th& 19th centuries (Maine, 1995)    J. Lowry, Fiddlers and whores. the candid memoirs of a surgeon in Nelson’s fleet, James Lowry, 1798 (London 2006)    B. Lavery, Royal Tars. The lower deck of the royal navy, 875-1850 (London 2010)    R. and L. Adkins, Jack Tar. Life in Nelson’s Navy (London 2008)   A. Bruce, Encyclopedia of Naval History (London 1998)   J. Black, Naval Power: A History of Warfare and the Sea from 1500 (London 2009)   N.A. M Rodger, The Safeguard of the Sea: A Naval History of Britain 660-1649 (London 1997) C. L. Symonds, The U.S. Navy: A Concise History (New York 2015)

Admiral W. E. Smith, The Sailor's Word-Book: An Alphabetical Digest of Nautical Terms (England 1867)
And believe me, the more you read, the more little things you notice and the deeper you dig and compile lists and other notes that will help you a lot later on.

a) Francesca Woodman - Space 2 (“You cannot see me from where I look at myself”)
b) John Berger - Ways of Seeing
c) Jenny Holzer - Lustmord
d) Clarissa Pinkola Estés - Women who Run with the Wolves
e) Zanele Muholi’s Isilumo siyaluma series depict the notion of ‘painful periods’ in a decorative pattern using her own menstrual blood.  As representations of flowers, these images symbolise a de-flowering of women, and a brutalisation of their sexual rights. This idea of de-flowering continues through as what Muholi refers to as South African men intending to ‘cure’ lesbian women by means of rape. (@muholizanele)

National Portrait Gallery and Stills Gallery . . . Not Finished!
Edinburgh Exhibition Trip!
On Wednesday 25th September we travelled by bus to Edinburgh to vistit the National Portrait Gallery and the Stills Gallery. We visited the exhibition titled ‘Artist Rooms: Self Evidence/Woodman,Arbus,Mapplethorpe.
Tumblr media
When entering the gallery, the first photographer I encountered at the exhibition is one I have researched before; Francesca Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) an American photographer. I have long since admired her work. Below is the first ever image I researched of Francesca Woodman, however, due to Tumblr rules, I cannot show it in its entirety.
Tumblr media
(AWARE Women artists / Femmes artistes, 2019) (Image above)
I was always particularly interested in the image above. Francesca is sitting in a chair, nude, her hands between her knees. She is far away from the camera. White paper has been nailed up behind her, possibly to prevent prying eyes from viewing her nakedness, or it could be to help diffuse the light, which I believe is most probable. A shadow image of a body is burned into the floor. Is it meant to be her? Some have deduced that she is portending her demise - that the image on the floor is her ‘chalk outline’ like would be seen at the scene of a crime. When I first saw this image, I found the burnt image in the floor distracting. Was this her intention? I believe so. Morbidity outweighs the nude woman in the corner. Death and darkness interest us more that the beautiful woman aglow in the diffuse light from the window. This is how I read this image.
Francesca Woodman was April 3rd 1958 in Denver, Colorado and took her own life, passing away on 19th January, 1981 in New York.
I fell in love with Woodman’s work, before I ever heard her story. And her story, broke my heart. As I write these words, and let’s get this over with, you are all thinking the words that seem to have meaning for everyone who views her images, “But didn’t she kill herself jumping from a window?” I find I am struck with anger each time someone has to mention this fact when speaking of her work. I can speak of Van Gogh’s paintings without first saying, ‘oh, but did you know he cut off his ear?’ Somehow in this crazy screwed up world, someone deems that her work is more viable by mentioning her death, instead of her life. Sad really. There are many, and by many I mean hundreds of amateur and professional psychologists that have analysed her life and death through her works. I prefer to take the link between her death and her work out of the equation.
It was on her 13th birthday when her father, a painter, and mother, a potter, gave Francesca her very first camera; it was a Yashica 24. She used this medium format camera until her passing. Woodman attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. It is said that she was influenced heavily by fashion photography and Surrealism. I really do believe that her imagery is more centered on self-discovery and identity as I have discovered through my research of her work. Her ethereal and ghost-like depictions are intriguing.
Below is Woodman’s first self-portrait taken at the age of 13 and also one of her first with her new camera.
Is she feeling connected, or tethered. Is she saying she has no identity by turning her head away? Or is the connection of the rope an extension of her cable knit sweater, as it appears to unravel? I love all the questions this image elicits.

(Victoria Miro, 2019)
Another favourite image of mine was this one below, again depicting Woodman herself. Sadly, I felt compelled to cover her exposed skin due to Tumblr rules. She had travelled to Italy to study. While she was there she printed several different poses with eels. Her body is nude as she cups her body around the bowl of eels.I find it striking that the colour of her skin is tied with the colour of the eels. This reduces her and the eels to shape and form. It’s absolutely beautiful. The lighting is perfection.

The second Photographer I encountered when turning the next corner was American photographer, Diane Arbus (14 March 1923, New York, New York - 26 July 1971, Artist Housing, New York). I have seen these images before, but it was fantastic to see them again up close and personal. The first image that I have always loved was ‘A Jewish Giant at Home with his Parents in the Bronx, N.Y. 1970′.
Tumblr media
It was Allan Arbus who gifted her first camera to her. They worked together, husband and wife, he a photographer and she an art director and stylist. She spent her life focusing her lens on the people who populated the fringe of society, including transgender, circus people and the mentally ill. This interests me greatly, as I too have a strong affinity for people on the ‘outside-looking-in’. My own artwork has depicted the mentally ill and dementia. It has long since been thought that Diane was bipolar, I think this is why her photography interests me, as I am too. It is important to not just take a pretty picture. Her images invoke viewers to build stories in their minds of the people whose essences she has captured. (Searle, 2019)

As an artist I wanted to take in the ‘Long Look’ - The making of a Portrait which explores the relationship that blooms between the artist and his sitter.

Stills Gallery - Cindy Sherman
Last, but NEVER least . . . The Great Cindy Sherman . . .
Cindy Sherman’s work has always centered around identity. She has spent her career trying on the ‘clothes’ of other personalities and photographing herself in different settings. Her untitled film stills are world famous.
After attending the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, the group I was with, walked to the Stills Gallery after we had lunch. It was about a 10-15 minute walk.

Increasing vegetable intake is universally promoted as part of a healthy diet. There are several nutrients in vegetables, like nitrate and vitamin K, that maintain the health and integrity of bone. Leafy green vegetables represent a rich source of these beneficial nutrients. A recent study* was conducted to test whether extra consumption of leafy green vegetables for four weeks would reduce the risk of fractures. This study highlighted the importance of obtaining optimal levels of vitamin K, found predominantly in leafy green vegetables and fermented foods. Vitamin K is required to build proteins for blood clots and bone tissue. Vitamin K supplementation was associated with a 25% reduction in clinical fracture risk in postmenopausal and osteoporotic patients. More studies to understand the relationship between leafy green vegetables and bone health are sure to come in the future. *Sim, M., Lewis, J. R., Prince, R. L., Levinger, I., Brennan-Speranza, T. 10 Great Classic Chapter Books to Read with 5-8 Year Olds
Tumblr media
Even though we promote outdoor play here at RiiRoo, we also encourage parents to spend more quality time with their kids. Whether it is indoors or outdoors.
The titles I am about to share with you in this collection have stood the test of time. They include a variety of different novels and a few story collections that children of this age group should enjoy and get a lot out of.
These publications were all published prior to 1980 and are books we all loved when we were that age and are really great for reading out loud to your kids. However, even if you have older children, I’m sure they will enjoy them too.
Now, before you base your opinions on some of the titles, please take a step back and remember that these are older books that don’t conform to all of the modern social values we hold today.
It is recommended that you read the reviews and also the age recommendations of the titles you haven’t heard of before (just to be on the safe side).
Note: All of these books will have a link to Amazon (we do not have any affiliation with them), but you could probably find them at various other retailers online or in the high street. These may be affiliate links.
You should also be able to find these books in your local library. This would mean you could spend time with your kids at the library and even read to them while you are there.
I hope that these stories help reconnect you to your childhood. You may even have forgotten the pleasure of reading these great books. Now you get the chance of reading them together with your children :)

 1. The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne. First published in 1926.

It tells the story of a poor house painter called Mr. Popper who lives in the small town of Stillwater in the 1930s. He is sent a Penguin (yes, random) that quickly expands to 12 Penguins and life is never the same again. The adventures are both exciting and hilarious for children and it lets their imagination run wild.

10. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (and other stories in the series) by Beatrix Potter. First published in 1902.
