OFMD/book!Howl’s Moving Castle thing where Ed is Howl and Izzy is calcifer — they’re bound in this contract that extended their power but now is just hurting both of them — and Stede comes in as Grandma Sophie all cleaning the Queen Anne and throwing aesthetic shawls everywhere and reminding Ed that joy exists. Imagine Stede!Sophie going “I am ADEQUATE (even though I’m the oldest of three)” before stomping up to the palace to blacken Ed!Howl’s name for the second time. Imagine Izzy!Calcifer singing a te reo Māori Allblacks cheer instead of Sosban Fach. There’s no point to this I just think it’s cute.

Not disagreeing with this but the one thing overlooked by a lot of people before and after this match - Izzy is not a good counter striker. At least not a particularly deep one.

For whatever reason Israel, his team, and fans think of him as a really slick out fighter but that’s not his game. He’s at his best when he’s overloading opponents with feints and different angles of attack. Forcing them to disengage, reset or freeze up (shouts to Costa). But for whatever reason (fear of TD, calcification of “champion” style, the mental block that Pereira put on him with that first KO loss, etc) he falls back on trying to counter

Man’s entire counter game is throwing himself wildly out of position on his opponent’s jab and waiting to counter the big swinging rear hand. Turn to the inside hip, lean back out the way and hope you don’t get hit and your opponent is still there for the counter. You could hear Bareman telling Izzy between rounds to wait on the wild swinging shot from Strickland (a thing he never does). It’s all he has to open up his opponent a lot of the time when he goes into this out fighter mode. He doesn’t draw out responses to counter with his own jab. He doesn’t cross counter his opponent’s jab or try to jab with them. He’s not much of a hooker (Whittaker KO notwithstanding), in part cause he’s leaning so off balance 75% of the time that a counter from that position is just not a good response. And he’s not going to counter kick opponents when they kick with him (in part cause he’s moving backwards so much). And to top it all off, he moves backwards a lot. He puts himself on the fence. For as much as Strickland walked forward to pressure, there were a number of times Izzy just went to the fence willingly.

To Izzy’s credit, it works. Leg kick defense and jabbing are in short supply in MMA. He doesn’t have to be aggressive because he can skate by outpointing folks with his kicks and the occasional right hand or jab. But he’s not building off it. Strickland’s square stance took away the only scoring weapon Izzy really has (leg kicks), and he was forced into these exchanges where the thing he was waiting on never came.

I also don’t agree with the notion that this was an off version of Izzy. That was the same Izzy that fought Whittaker. Same one that fought Jan. Same one that fought Costa. Same strengths and same flaws. And those flaws got put under a magnifying glass by a guy with the perfect style to exploit them.

I too could see it both ways but I am absolutely enamored with the idea of prim and proper stede running into a weirdly sexy leatherclad demon from the deepest pits of hell blackbeard out of nowhere, and then getting cursed, thus gaining a perfect excuse to leave his old life behind, and setting out for the hills to find a strange, miserable wreck of a man living in a weird ship-shaped moving castle.

cleaning up. bringing light back into his life. into his own life while he's at it. ed wailing over his hair going grey. I don't think it would follow the original story beats very well, but I do think it would be absolutely amazing

blackstede howl’s moving castle au (the book version because while the miyazaki adaptation is gorgeous it doesnt actually have any concrete plot that ive been able to glean lmao. also i grew up with the book and im biased.) where stede isnt actually cursed by the wicked witch of the waste hes actually old in this one and he just runs away because he fucking hates his life. izzy is calcifer and lucius is michael just coz i like him and i want him involved lol

i guess that would make black pete stedes brother which is funny. idk if that would be true tho maybe lucius never finds love in this one (rip)

ofmd but it’s just howls moving castle. stede makes a mess in his village because he’s Stede Bonnet and is always making messes, so he gets tasked with tracking down the great wizard Blackbeard and making him fight in the Big War Thing. He walks out of his village and finds Ed’s giant floating pirate ship and then hijinks happen and oh no now he’s cleaning for a random cursed wizard pirate guy and he’s kind of falling in love with him even though Ed can be kind of a dick sometimes. Ed is exactly like Howl, down to the emotional turmoil and issues and all that jazz, but instead of turning into a giant bird he turns into a giant kraken. don’t worry he can still fly and helps save stede when they first meet. also they still do the thing where they walk across the air during the festival. izzy is calcifer. i got nothing else.
