Here's a thing I did years ago where I screenshotted the 10 Ixupi from the 1995 PC horror game "Shivers" by Sierra Online/Entertainment.
Looking back on it, some of these buggers weren't exactly all THAT scary. But you know, these were the jumpscares I was used to long before FNAF was a thing.
But yeah, hopefully there's people on this site who remember this game that'll enjoy this.
And if not, there's still always the killer soundtrack. Pun intended.

"Charles, do you hear that? That... sort of crackling sound?"
"Edwin, mate. We gotta run. NOW!"
Edwin definitely is not a fan of the upper floor with its winding corridors. And why is Charles no longer behind him?
Still separated from Charles, Edwin winds up in the Funeral Rites room and finds Merrick's diary. The last sentence made him open the sarcophagus and yeah... letting that one sink in for a bit.
He's reunited with Charles not too long after (who'd been frantically searching for him after one of the Ixupi had thrown him down some floors after discovering it could not nom on his life essence).
This museum has a serious case of haunting going on!
The Curious Case of Professor's Windlenot's Museum of the Strange and Unusual
Dead Boy Detectives x Shivers (1995 Sierra game)
What if… Shivers had been set in the UK?
We have: one nutty Professor taking forever to build his museum - Sir Hubert Windlenot.
And we have Beth, who wanted to explore…
… with the boy she was head over heels for - Merrick.
And then they took off the lids of those vessels and… oops, turns out those were enchanted talismans trapping the children of the Mayan snake god (and they love to nom on life-essence). * So what if the story gets tweaked a bit?
Let's say, Charles and Edwin are exploring a village and hear some teenagers talking about 'crazy Windlenut's Museum'.
They're daring one of their friends to spend the night on museum grounds because 'We think you are kind of, well, obsessed, thinking you were hearing voices and stuff coming from the museum and all…' before chattering on about all the theories. Two missing kids, and no one knows what happened to them even after all these years! 'Maybe they're the voices of those kids who disappeared.' 'Rumours has it that Windlenut went insane and viciously murdered them, and then buried their bodies in the basement of the museum.' More and more intriguing. And apparently the whereabouts of this Professor they're speaking of is unknown as well? Hiding out in the museum perhaps? Huh… * Curious, the boys find the museum moments before sunset and yup, those rumours are true because there - barely audible over the wind, is a voice hissing at them to 'get out' and that 'they are evil' before ending with whimpering cries of 'nooo'. So, the game is afoot! Charles and Edwin enter through the front door (after listening to the message playing after they pressed the door buzzer) and find a museum pamphlet containing a map of the place. They're in awe at the exhibits and lookie-here - this pamphlet says there are puzzles scattered all about! First they go to Windlenot's office and learn that something has been going on here. The place is a mess - furniture tipped over, books thrown from their shelves. A rolled-up newspaper is stuffed in one of the pockets of a coat hanging off a rack, and right there on the front page:
As Edwin is reading the article out loud to Edwin he shuffles in front of the fireplace and stops all of a sudden, head tilted to the side and a frown marring his brow. "Charles, what's that rustling sound?"
A moment later Charles yanks on Edwin's coat sleeve and pulls his friend closer towards him, just in time for both of them to see a dark entity rising from a pile of ashes brandishing slashy claws that now only find air. The entity screams and seems to swirl off as dust on the wind and then there is silence in the office. The boys move on to searching Windlenot's desk. There's a phone on it with its cord cut. There's also a tape recorder and ooh - now that's an intriguing message. Also, very disconcerting :s With their keen eyes they're able to find all the secrets in the office, including the elevator taking them down towards some creepy tunnels which lead…
... to an underground lake?
Charles notices a clay pot sitting near the tunnel exit and picks it up. "Oh how cute, it looks a bit like a duck, doesn't it? Well hello there, mate." He coos, patting the clay head.
Then the head comes off and…
Charles and Edwin meet Sir Hubert Windlenot, Professor in Archeology. Even as the Professor laments the ruination of his museum, a blue light approaches, causing the boys to quickly flee the other way. There's an Egyptian looking boat that they manage to get moving and - oh… that's what happened to the Professor's body. Charles picks up the book the Professor had been holding on to and, after recognising it as the book mentioned on the recording, stuffs it in his backpack. The blue light is gone and there are still two missing persons to find, so the boys turn back the way they came. They explore…
"Edwin, mate... Perhaps we should turn around, yeah?" Solve puzzles...
And find out more about these so-called Ixupi and how they are now roaming the museum.
They find Beth's ghost in the Clock Tower.
And she's determined to stick around until she finds out what happened to Merrick. Nope, she's not leaving and she did those puzzles before they all reset - she can help! She also tells them that the markings on the pots are important - so they can capture the Ixupi again! In the Funeral Rites Room they find what's left of Merrick, apparently he'd tried to hide away in the Sarcophagus of Ghana but it was no use. As they find out later in a little storage room where Beth had been in awe of the fortune telling machine before, the Jade Ixupi had gotten to him and stuffed his ghost into its vessel before fleeing into the world. Merrick's found! Well, his ghost this time...
Reunited, Beth and Merrick apparently have no unfinished business anymore, because the sound of wings approaches together with a blue light - they're ready to move on. Edwin and Charles rush off. Nosirreee not today! Not ever! But they still haven't found out what happened to Beth's body.
So on to investigating the rest of the museum; until all the puzzles are solved and all the rooms are explored, except for one...
They deal with the final Ixupi and accidentally cause an explosion that takes down half the wall... Well, job well jobbed and all of that... And that's The Curious Case of Professor's Windlenot's Museum of the Strange and Unusual - solved.
* (I bet the boys would love being able to explore the museum - see the exhibits and solve all the puzzles. There are all sorts of goodies there to explore and somehow afterwards their bookshelves at home are filled to the brim).

i know at one point before replaying shivers after i got my jewel case copy i had said that the game wasn’t actually scary because the only things that can hurt you are stationary, but i was wrong, when you can’t tell if you’re one screen away or two screens away from the ixupi that is currently in your way it is very scary.
#switch speaks#id still overall say shivers is more Anxiety than Horror#if there's one adventure game i'd call 'Anxiety: The Adventure Game' it's shivers#when that happens i just fuck off until it spawns somewhere else so i can get by i hate it#also when i replayed it i completely misremembered which 3 elements aren't active so i thought stuff would be safe when it wasnt

Some additional scenes from before things got tense.
Edwin is debating the whole idea of Atlantis and its whereabouts. The Professor may claim one thing, but Edwin has read several books on the topic and is convinced Atlantis used to be in the area of Santorini in Greece...
Now this is a nice display area (Edwin is appreciating a rack of clay jars organised neatly along the wall, meanwhile Charles is staring down a Moai statue that seems to be watching over the room).
"Oi, Edwin. Quite a cutesy little tune, innit?" "Anansi the spider certainly revealed its secret, Charles. Well done on that particular puzzle!"
Charles isn't sure what to think of this particular room... * And two more scenes from when the Ixupi had started to become a serious bother to them...
Once Charles found Edwin again after having been thrown down some floors by one of the Ixupi, he's determined to (1) not be separated from Edwin again and (2) cheer up his best friend, who seems to be stuck ruminating on Merrick's fate. Goofing around with their spyglass and trying to see the Ixupi making that rustling, fabric-y sound from the alcove in front of them could work, right? Safe distance, that's for sure!
The answer to another puzzle is on that film strip, but perhaps they'd better come back later... much later, when those creaking and clanging sounds have stopped.
