IXIA — SHYNESS

"With the season of love, some fairies may discover the true nature of love. The heart beating, the blushing cheeks ... Everything up until nobody knows how to hide such a strong feeling. Thus, sometimes, hidden in the flowers, one may be the witness of a lovely yet shy in-love fairy."

Katya is the whole embodiment of shyness and delicacy. She is mostly seen with Mick and she is deeply in love with him, but still ... She is a princess who takes her time and who respects the good manners. No one wants to rush their true lovestory, so does Katya.

AMARYLLIS — PRIDE

"Even in a so-called fairy world, it is not always easy, and pink, and beautiful. No sometimes, fairies can be proud and ultimately they can feel superior to the other ones. Well. It is not their fault: they do are superior on some aspects. But not all."

Haibara is one of my queens. Really. Why queen? Because she sure acts as she is one. She is supposed to be "perfect" and thus seeks only for such perfection. Sometimes being alone with such expectations can also be a burden. Fortunately, she got Aaron for that!

ANEMONE — REJECTION

"Lonelyness and isolation are lethal for a fairy. As it has been said, sometimes fairies are crual against one another, especially when it comes to differencies. Can you imagine who cannot fly? What a shame! They can never be a real fairy!"

Andy is my soft cinnamon roll. He is absolutely one of my favorite character. Most of the time, I tend to give him a shy spot and a nervous personnality, but in reality, he is a little sunshine. He loves jumping around and spending time with his boyfriend, Etoile! But, he also suffered from rejection from his mother, even though he never really hold a grudge against her for that.

CYCLAMEN — JEALOUSY

"Waiting and longing for someone is an awful feeling. Especially when the fairy is known for fooling around, or ... not being so serious about the others, or ... being too perfect. Affection turns into paranoia, love turns into hatred ... Jealousy is now blooming in the heart of a small fairy."

I'm feeling so sorry for Eleonor: each time she is in a challenge, she always represents jealousy because of her boyfriend, Raymond, but she is more than just a jealous girlfriend! She is smart, talktative, attractive ... She actually knows how to fool someone, and she loves listening to the lovestory of the people around her. Really not a bad girl.

POPPY — FRAGILITY

"A fairy is a being which is small and fragil. You have to be very careful with them. Their wings are thin, but powerful. Sometimes, human confuse them with butterfly. And juste like butterfly, their wings tend to be easy to break."

Louise is a little cutie. She is calm but shy. Though, I really love to draw her, even if it's not really often. From time to time, it feels right to give her some attention!

Evening Primrose: Does your world contain any shapeshifters, shapeshifting magic, or any methods of magical transformation?

BUCKLE IN KIDS IT'S TIME TO TALK ABOUT *SHAPESHIFTING*

(I really fucking love disguises and shapeshifting)

So the main shapeshifting/transformation that comes up is the cloaking spell--it's a powerful bit of magic that takes some time for a sorcerer to learn, and usually only holds for a day or two. When Nova does it for Cloelia and Glauco, she's able to use the bronze bracelet Martino gave them to make the spell hold for as long as its on, so he can impersonate her long-term. (Do I know what happens to him after they escape and he's left there? Not at all)

Once a sorcerer has learned how to cast the spell properly, though, it's incredibly hard to detect until it wears off. I've got a whole snippet in the works with Basilio getting a mage to do the spell on him for spying purposes, and it's really just a huge excuse to poke fun at Basilio.

There's also the seduction monsters (species name pending) who can shift between human forms to ensnare their prey and eat their hearts, and the race of nymphs who are born with the ability to shapeshift

Passionflower: What stories, cultures, myths, folklore, legends, sciences, etc. inspired parts of your world?

The world in general is heavily drawn from the Ancient World--Circi's Rome, Bellamagna's Sparta, Vinoseta's Athens, and Candemero's Gaul.

I also have a lot of allusions to Greek myth--like Adrasteia's whole family being named for tragic Greek figures, while she's named for the goddess of revenge. Ixia's name is a reference to Ixion, Cloelia is named for a Roman legend about a maiden being sold to Etruscan invaders, etc. A lot of the myths I have are reworked versions of stories/themes that already exist.

There's also some draws from actual history--Basilio's estate is in Cannae, the site of the bloodiest Roman defeat, and Cloelia is given to Veii, early Rome's greatest enemy.

This was an OC question prompt I filled out for fun in the discord

01. Oldest OC: My oldest OC is a black wolf named Galar. She has purple boot markings and usually stained with blood. She was actually a side character to a larger story that has long since been scrapped.

02. Newest OC: My newest oc is an unnamed witch from a story I have about magic, fantastical creatures and the scientific world coexisting in one place.

03. Favorite OC: My favorite original character answer at some point easily would have been either Sharu or Lamis, with Fifi coming close behind, but at any given moment I usually have one or two ocs I'm particularly infatuated with and couldn't be for sure.

04. Favorite OC Design: My favorite design I've done that I still own is Scarlet, a "foxpixie"(original species). His design is simple and pleasing to me without being unnatural.

05. Main Reason For Making OCs: Self expression, connecting with others by creating characters that harbor relatable aspects of myself, and just the challenge of it.

06. Character Creation Process: World > Vague Archetype > Vague Appearance > Refining Character Traits > Refining Appearance > Complete Character

07. Do You Ship Your OCs W/ Someone Else's: Romantically, not at the moment, but I wouldn't be opposed to it if I thought the characters would make a good match beyond just their aesthetics

08. Fav OC Ship?: Sharu x Chotsea favorite. Runnerups Taka x Scarlet, and Dusty x Fifi though those two make the best friends already.

09. Weirdest OC: Currently I believe Adek would have to be weirdest. They're a nervous wreck who just as easily switches and finds unwavering confidence as they take different forms while shapeshifting.

10. Villain OCs: Pelona the plant. He is redeemable to a point but his self hatred governs all his actions and he commits terrible acts against those around him in order to isolate himself. Then he turns into an uncontrollable mass of hatred. So yeah, him.

11. Would You Consider Yourself Nice To Your OCs: My older ones, yes. My newer ones, not so much. They go through much more pain.

12. An OC You've Killed (If You Haven't Killed Anyone, Who Would You Kill?): Pelona dies at the end of their story and comes back as a sad, small plant with no semblance of consciousness so I guess that counts. I have multiple alternate endings to Scarlet's story, where the character Muldoon can die in one of them, his loyal knight Ettore along with him.

13. Are Any Of Your OCs Parents: Yes, a few of my cantin OCs are parents (Ixias, Nelif and Paraiba). Sharu and Chotsea were once going to be parents but I undid that.

14. Are There Any OCs You Find Yourself Neglecting: Absolutely. I have neglected all the humanoid OCs in my "solarwitch" world for years. I also neglect most of my OCs made from 2014-2018. I still love them though.

15. An OC That's Difficult To Write/Draw/RP: Dorothy the skunk/cow hybrid has been unnaturally difficult for me to write any backstory for, let alone draw. I don't RP.

16. Tallest And Shortest OCs: Going by relative height to other developed (fully grown) characters in their worlds; CG, Yuuma. Fairy Queen, Periwinkle. As for OCs with no specific universe, Chotsea or Under might be the tallest, Fudgey is the smallest.

17. Oldest and Youngest OCS: Tellstruths and an unnamed dragonfly are ancient in age, while Clauze is the youngest developed OC I have. All are from the Redgrass world

18. Do You Dislike Any Of Your OCs: Dolores is an OC I made my sona as a joke as he is very unlike me. He's high strung and doesn't get along with my other sonas. Therefore he is the closest to disliked, though even then I can't really dislike any of my characters since I made them.

19. Have You Ever Made A Self Insert: I assume this is referring specifically to making a fancharacter for a piece of media that is supposed to represent myself if I were in said world. None come to mind.

20. An OC Regret: I don't give enough love to my OCs and that is regrettable. A design I regret making maybe? I don't have one...

21. An OC You Didn't Expect To Be Popular: Speagle. I knew kidcore stuff was popular but I didn't think people would like him enough to be downloading his pics to put in moodboards and adding him to their kin tags. As for a more recent example, Marbol was more well received than I thought he would be for a little green gremlin thing, so that was nice.

22. An OC You Didn't Expect To Love: I expect to love any OC I design to keep, but Adek in particular was just so silly to begin with I didn't think I'd be so attached to him. His name literally used to be obscenities bc of how much of a joke he was. He's stupid and a scaredy cat and I have a special soft spot for him now.

Japanese-coded Fantasy Villain and Her People:

Hi! The current story I’m working on is a high fantasy one/not on earth/ [with regions inspired by real world cultures], and I’ve been incorporating mythological creatures or humanoids from folklore. I try to research as much as I can about them, and try to do something kind of different (ex. modify something like a selkie or a gnome). I’m careful to avoid doing creatures that may have significant cultural meaning.

The problem I came into was with my villain. She is partly inspired by Japanese mythology, so I thought it might be appropriate to give her traditional Japanese clothing/hair. It then quickly stuck out to me that I’ve just coded the villain and her people to be Japanese, and I definitely do not want to single out and vilify the culture. I’ve read over the section on east Asian women stereotypes, and I don’t believe she falls into any of the categories. 

I have other good guy characters in the story who are also inspired by Japanese folklore, so it is not her and her people alone. What should I change? Thank you! :)

I want you to look into each individual part of Japanese mythology you’re “inspired by.” You don’t naturally have the cultural context to do what you’re trying to do, or to “be creative!” with someone else’s culture—at least, not without research and consultation. Look up Japanese folktales and read multiple translated versions of them. Read fantasy books written by modern Japanese authors. Study how Japanese literature and the use of Japanese mythology has evolved over time. And even if you do all of that, understand and respect the fact that some things in certain cultures are off-limits to outsiders on principle.

But the thing that gets me is that you say, “[the villain] and her people alone”. I might be reading too much into this, but to me, this wording implies that her people, an entire group of Japanese coded people, are just as bad as she is, or that they help her with her Evil Plan. It also implies that the Japanese coded “good guys” are the only ones who don’t fall into this, because they’re separated from the culture of the “evil” Japanese coded people. If this is the case, I’d strongly suggest that you go back to the drawing board. If your “evil” fantasy race is based on a group of real life people, that has many, many unfortunate implications, and… there's really no way to make it work. So just don’t do it. Even if they’re not inherently “evil” and your villain just manipulated them, that’s still… not a thing you should do.

Re: “her people:” what Ixia said. Keep in mind that a major part of racist xenophobia against the Japanese (both mainland and Japanese-Americans) during WWII was spurred on by a specific form of propaganda by American government and society. It portrayed Japanese people as what might as well be a hive-mind in their support of the Emperor, and as aggressors complicit in the actions of the Axis as opposed to, say, a diverse people held hostage by a government. If you research old political cartoons you’ll notice that how they define the enemy usually boils down to: Hitler plus Mussolini plus Some Japanese Dude. Not the Showa Emperor or a more equivalent Japanese political/military leader, just some guy, in full yellowface caricature. 

This idea of “the civilians are in on it” was a significant driver behind both Japanese internment and public support for the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So needless to say, there’s harmful historical precedent for generalizing Japanese people as a nation of evil as opposed to pointing to an oppressive political structure that’s in power. 

Re: mythology and creative tweaks: also what Ixia said, but unfortunately, your question is far too vague as to what these mythological elements are, which give me more reason to say: err on the side of caution, and 100% get more consultation than just this. This is non-negotiable.

Much of what I think about this villain as you describe her will depend on what mythological sources you are pulling from, your villain’s actions and their motivations. In absence of that information, I don’t have any helpful advice. In general, I think it’s better to consult us after you have a more specific idea about the kind of story you’d like to tell. It’s true that part of our role is to counsel how to avoid egregious depictions of people of color, but questions like yours are really asking for how to better convey appropriate cultural nuance for a culture with which you are not familiar. I suggest you reach out to us once you have developed your villainess in greater detail.

Please enjoy these sentences while I try to find something imposing to hide behind!

Derek hopes that he can make it so that Stiles does not feel so overwhelmed by praise, that there comes a day when he can accept it without wanted to hide or question if Derek is being truthful. Given how Stiles has reacted to his words so far, as well as the way he had smelled when his father spoke, makes it seem like that might take some time…

The clearing of a throat pulls Derek’s attention away from his Intended, the sliver of his father’s grin there and then gone in an instant as he draws everyone’s attention. ��Were there any other questions you had for us? Or should we instead move on to how we intend to arrange everything? The New Moon is a given for our side, but is there any Gods or rituals the Stilinskis need to honor in the joining of our Clans?”

Stiles turns an endearing shade of red when he realizes that the question is directed at him, gazing quickly at Derek like there is some way the older man can take over for him. Derek gives a minute shrug, unsure how he can help his soon-to-be husband when he has no knowledge of how the Stilinskis honor weddings or what Gods they call upon when asking for blessings.

Another quick dart of his eyes turns his gaze to his father, but Jon misses Stiles’ silent plea because he is too busy trying not to draw attention to himself by filling up his tankard and downing the contents as fast as he can.

A quiet huff of air slips past Stiles’ lips before he meets Ixias’ gaze head on, cheeks still a rosy hue as he explains, “The beginning of spring was always an important time for us, as it was the time when all things began again, that the harsh winters had not killed all growing things. We gave tribute to Gefjun, that our fields bare fruit and our lands stay green, in the hopes that the Generous One bless us with enough to feed our families.”

It is Talia that nods at this, pausing with her head inclined just so. “Does this mean that you would be more comfortable waiting until the spring to wed? So that you may give proper tithes to the Goddess you serve?”

“We can still honor Her.” Derek interjects, not at all keen to wait another three months before making Stiles his husband-

-three months for Stiles to decide he’s better off without you, an insidious voice whispers in his mind-

“-I am sure that we have some saplings we can plant in tribute, or a decent plant that can grace our home.” Derek rushes on, pushing the voice to the back of his thoughts to focus on the people around him. “Is that not why we gathered here? So that our Clans could be joined as soon as possible, so that we could lend one another our strengths and bolster each other’s weaknesses?”

His mother is frowning slightly at the end of his words and even Stiles’ gaze is more focused on the grains of the table under his hands. It is Derek’s father that breaks the silence by softly stating, “While that is true, it would not do to rush this wedding simply because we believe we need to. We want the Gods to look favorably upon this joining, not frown upon it, and if that means waiting, then that is what we must do.”

Derek is just opening his mouth to perhaps try once more time at moving up the date when there is a slight laugh coming from the other end of the table, reminding him that Stiles’ father is also sitting in on this meeting. Jón’s voice is slightly slurred when he speaks, earning him a few looks of disdain from Derek’s side of the table.

“Don’t worry, Halesson. I’m sure that Stiles will be able to keep you intrigued in the coming months. Did you not just say that you enjoyed his talk and the subjects that he comes up with? My wife, may Odin keep her safe, once said that he could charm the very birds from the sky, so I am sure he will be able keep your interest!”

Derek lets loose a low growl at the tone the older man takes, the implication that Stiles is going to be doing everything but talk to keep Derek’s ‘attention’ in every word. It is his own fault, with how he reacted earlier in the halls and what Laura implied when they had entered the chamber, but Stiles is once more curled in on himself and moving so there is more space twixt the two of them. It is only the steadying presence of his mother behind him, her hand a heavy warning on the back of his neck, that keeps Derek from tearing into the older man.
