Dear *Best Magician Who Ever Walked The Face Of Earth*
Dear Best Magician Who Ever Walked the Face of the Earth,
That’s quite the title, Love. Perhaps we should just stick with, ‘My Dear Zachary’.
I love you. As hard as that may be to comprehend… I love you. You’re like my son, Zach. I think of you as my son, I love you like my son, and I will protect you as my son. That doesn’t mean you have to see me as your mother. Absolutely not. I know you have parents, parents who you’re sure will come around one day. And for your sake, I pray that happens.I want you to find happiness, Zach. Even if that means I don’t share in it with you.
You have a good head on your shoulders, Zach. You’re smart, caring, and you do the right thing. I need to say this, because I don’t think you believe it. And I’m also going to say something you won’t like. You cannot make everyone like you in the world, Zachary. There will always be those audiences that sit there in silence when you’re expecting applause. Do not let those people stifle you, or stop you from performing. You’re a natural on stage, my Love. Continue with that passion, and you’ll be on top of the world before you know it. But don’t forget that you don’t have to be everyone’s favorite to be successful. All you have to do is be proud of yourself.
I’m proud of you. I love you. And I’m still here for you.
With Love,Peggy
Ps. Steve and I have tickets for your show on Friday night; I think it’s time you meet him.

Dear person I had a crush on,
You really tried, but I guess I’m just too much to be tamed.
Much love,

Dear past me,
You were happy, and I know that I fucked all that up, and I’m sorry. I promise I’m going to do everything I can to fix it.

✎ : what Kate’s best subject in school was:
Kate wasn’t the most school-oriented person around - she was a lonely rich kid until she joined up with the Young Avengers. It’s a big reason she hadn’t applied to college directly after high school - she takes superhero-ing very seriously. (She’s thinking about doing it now, though.) That being said, it doesn’t mean she’s not smart. Kate thinks a mile a minute and she’s always, always talking - she’s rarely quiet. Being well-spoken and clever results in her being a pretty good writer, so she got pretty good grades in English.
❤ : what Kate looks for in a person she likes:
Kate has a tendency to go for two types - partiers and people who she has kind of a competitive relationship with. (Whether either of these are good choices in partners is another story.) She probably also has a thing for guys her age with white hair, but that’s almost definitely a coincidence. (That’s what she tells herself, anyway.)

“You’re a terrible cook.”
“And you’re a terrible diner!” M’gann stuck out her tongue and laughed at the appalled look on Zachary’s face before taking another bite of her peanut butter sandwich.
Her one-room studio apartment was barely large enough for a refrigerator and small counter area with a microwave and sink. With proper equipment M’gann was an excellent cook, and she knew it, but given that her measly allowance was barely keeping a roof over her head such luxuries would simply have to wait.
However, cramped quarters aside, M’gann liked having an apartment that didn’t rely on her being a part of a team. She appreciated coming home after an exhausting day and not having to be a superhero for a few hours. And she liked eating sandwiches for dinner sitting cross-legged on her couch-bed beside Zachary.
But, seeing Zachary’s grimace as he reluctantly bit into his own sandwich, M’gann decided to make a small concession. “I’m going to phone for a pizza.”

Have you hugged someone within the last week?
“Yeah. I hug people all the time. That isn’t strange for me.” Not even when the last person she had hugged was a billionaire in a vigilante’s suit, holding her close as they used his high-tech gear to jump directly off a roof to street level.

How is your heart lately?
“How is my heart lately? What kind of fucking question is that?” An entirely valid one, a voice in his head told him but Jason chose to ignore that voice. He pulled the bloodstained helmet from his features. He didn’t want to talk about his heart, and he was half inclined to squeeze off a couple rounds and pretend that the question hadn’t been asked of him.
But it had been, and that meant that he should at least try to answer it. It would have been easier to come up with a coherent answer if he could make sense of his feelings most days, but unfortunately, it seemed that Jason was doomed to forever be the one who was fighting against his own mind to keep control.
“How is my heart lately? Fucking—” He trailed off slightly before he finished he thought tersely. “Peachy.”

“I’m gonna need something to wear.”
[ batman: under the red hood sentence meme ]
Selina rolled her eyes. “It’s a goddamn heist, Zach, not your coming out party.” She folded her arms over her chest, already starting to regret asking Zach for help on this one. She had learned not to trust magicians a while ago, but here she was, asking one for help, and she wasn’t quite sure that it was the right idea.
It didn’t matter that much, however, as it was just a small score, nothing serious. He would play a minor role for a a small payoff, just something to keep Selina comfortable until the next big thing came along, but she was already considering calling the whole thing off at that comment.

“Awwww, so you DO think about me.”
[ batman: under the red hood sentence meme ]
Jason snorted. “Yeah, sure, you keep thinking that.”
So what if he had shown up at this stupid magic show? It wasn’t because he necessarily wanted to see the magic, but instead because it was only a block away from where he had slept the night before and because he had been looking for something to do that wouldn’t drain his bank account. He had gotten these tickets for free, and while he certainly didn’t have anyone he had wanted to bring to this affair, he didn’t mind coming here on his own.
Of course, Jason would never admit it was because he had been intrigued by the magician, god, no. He would never admit that, not ever. Or, even worse—he could never admit that he might have actually liked magic. Just a little bit.
“Aren’t you supposed to be up there pulling tigers out of your ass or something, anyway?”

“I’ve been living a lonely life.”
She closed her eyes tight, her teeth biting into her lower lip until the copper in her mouth finally forced her to release her hold. Without waiting, Peggy stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her boy. “You don’t have to keep living it, Zach.” She muttered, barely a thought given to the strength of her grip.
“Stay in my life. Please. I’ll be here for you every day. Your highs, your lows- the days you want to disappear I’ll be there. I promise, Zachary. I’ll stay here for you, and I’ll fight for you. You don’t have to be alone, not anymore.” She felt tears slip past her lashes, gathering on her cheeks. But it didn’t matter. Her feelings and tears, hell, even the hug didn’t really matter. He did. He was the most important person right now, and it was about damn time he realized that.
“I promise, Zach. I will never turn my back on you. You never have to be alone again. I promise.” She brought her head up and kissed his temple, feeling herself gently rock him back and forth. He was almost a head taller than she was, but that was of little consequence. She simply rocked him, tightened her hold on his chest, and hummed quietly.

∞ if Kate believes in ghosts/aliens etc.:
Yes, definitely! One of her best friends is a Kree/Skrull hybrid, so she definitely knows aliens are out there, and she also has experience with magic users and alternate timelines now. She’s pretty much open and more awakened to anything supernatural at this point.
✈ where Kate would go if she could move anywhere:
Honestly, NYC is where she calls home. A big point of contention, though, is still technically being listed as living at her parents’ address. She spends more time with Clint at his place now than she does at theirs, but whenever she goes home to her family house there’s an argument between her and her father about her future as an heiress to a big company. So right now the short answer would be ‘out of her parents’ house’.
✧ what Kate’s Netflix queue looks like:
She watches a LOT of crime shows & procedurals. Law & Order, CSI, NCIS and the like. She’s definitely out of the demographic but she finds them super interesting. Kate also really likes buddy cop comedies and those cooking competition shows like Chopped & MasterChef.

“So… why do you keep your closet locked?
“Because children have been known to try and open it up, and then they try to wrap my scarves around them, and then they find my guns.” Carter explained while looking down, reading over the recipe she had just found from an old cookbook.
“Why were you trying to open my closet, Zachary? I doubt you’d fit into any of the dresses I have in there.” At her light jab, Peggy lifted her eyes and smiled to him, her nail stopping at the line she had last read. There was no logical reason for Zach to look through her things, though it wasn’t a surprise that he tried. Of the handful of times he had stayed with her, Peggy was surprised the question wasn’t asked sooner.
Tapping her nail against the page, she finally gave up and moved towards Zach. As she passed him, she nabbed his hand and started to drag him back with her. “I have no qualms with guns, of course. But I believe that it’s better to teach gun control before leaving things out for curious grandchildren or magicians. C’mon, it’s time for a crash course.”
After unlocking the closet and revealing the few guns to Zach, Peggy eased into a conversation about guns and the methods of safety she had been taught. He tried to whine a few times during the demonstration, but ultimately he was quiet. By the end of the hour Peggy had managed to not only teach him the basics of firearm care and safety, but also see him handle her trusted pistol with the proper precautions.
“Perfect job, Zachary. I’d say that’s enough of that for today. Why don’t we go back out to the kitchen and I’ll start baking us some muffins? I’ll make enough for you to take back with you… and feed a few to your friends.” She promised, giving his arm a happy squeeze as she locked the closet back up.

“I can’t trust you.”
“Zachary.” Peggy stepped back, a hand up to her middle like she was trying to staunch a wound.
It shouldn’t matter. Why would it? He was a boy raised with little affection, he didn’t know what he was saying, didn’t know how much it would hurt someone who felt like a parent.
She straightened up almost immediately, her hand falling to capture the other one. Peggy took a moment to close her eyes, gather herself one more time before looking up and staring at him.
“Zach, you know you can. I’ve never told anyone about your powers. Never even gave you a file. I’m not tracking you, not watching you, not trying to give anyone a reason to come after you.” She spoke evenly, despite the fact that her hand was shaking.
She wanted nothing more than to hear him apologize, or see him reach out to her in some way. But nothing, he just looked down and stepped back.
“Zachary?”
Instead of letting herself start to cry, Carter forced a cough out and clasped her upper arms. She wanted him to need her… to look at her like her children had looked at her. She loved him like she loved her own kids, so why couldn’t he trust her? There was nothing Peggy had done, no act that would break their trust.
Without looking at her, Zach walked away. It left Carter with tears in her eyes, her front door wide open, and her heart breaking.
