intermission • iv | eclipse
→ summary: When the love letter you wrote and submitted as an assignment is leaked to the entirety of your university, it becomes a race against time to dispel rumours and convince the seven suspected muses of the poem that they aren’t the subject before anyone realises that you are the author. Easy, right? Well… maybe not as easy as you think.
→ pairing: bts x reader (feat. sera) → genre: college!au, crack, fluff, angst → warnings: sfw other than some ugly jealousy c/o a snake → words: 4.9K → a/n: sera didn’t always use to be a shitty person. well, that’s a lie. she was always a shitty person. she just used to be able to hide it well.
— • masterlist | prev | intermission iv | next • —
–– the first day of freshman year ––
The line for the free freshman orientation merchandise is longer than Sera had anticipated, even though she had arrived almost an entire hour early. Though most people would have dismissed the lengthy queue, Sera is Asian as Asian could get, her genes forbidding her from skipping over free shit when free shit can be received. She is sure her ancestors would never forgive her if she allowed this opportunity to slip through her fingers. And so, Sera waits with the rest of the cattle as the line shortens slowly, the heat of the early sun reminiscent of the summer months that should have already passed.
After sweating her body’s weight worth of sweat, she finally finds herself near the front of the line, foot tapping impatiently as the rowdy bunch of newly hatched boylings before her fought amongst themselves for the canvas knapsacks over the pink water bottles. Fragile masculinity at its finest, Sera thinks, as she watches with something akin to pity as the runt of the litter ends up with the “girlier” merchandise in the end.
At this point, all the better free items have mostly run out, though Sera wouldn’t mind getting the university emblem encrusted notepad and pen set. It is only a matter of moral principle when she gets the water bottle after seeing the boy from before shooting her with a desperate look, probably hoping to trade items with her if she had gotten something else. Sadistic pleasure courses through her veins when she sees the light fade from his eyes, the inevitability of his pink water bottle fate permanently sealed.
Puny boy. Drink your nasty energy drinks from your pink tinted bottle for all she cares. She’ll be doing the same, at least.
Free from that slow torture, Sera now has to subject herself to more agonizing torment by waiting for the rest of her orientation group members to arrive, most of whom should have gotten to the intended meeting location by now. She observes as her harried orientation leader tries unsuccessfully to get your small group to interact with one another, his fake cheery smile looking more strained as the apathetic faces of sleep-deprived freshmen fail to respond to his forced banter.
Her orientation leader, whose name she cannot recall for the life of her but will call “Mike” from now on, coughs awkwardly into his spotted handkerchief before dabbing his sweating forehead. Sera grimaces when she notices that a small glob of snot remains stuck to his skin where he had touched, though no one seems obliged to alert him of this fact. He glances at his watch, jumping from one foot to the other, as he does another headcount for the third time in the last ten minutes.
“7… 8… 9…” His finger hovers when it reaches the last person, his brow turned downwards in worry. The glob of snot dangles ever precariously from its perch. “Umm… Does anyone know where the last person is? We’re supposed to be ten, and the first part of our agenda is starting soon.”
Sera wonders why on earth he’s asking that as if they were supposed to be friends with one another. The university had forced everyone to make a group chat with their orientation groupmates a week ago, which was honestly a lost cause considering that everyone was randomly sorted into groups. Sera’s group chat only has two messages so far, with both being from the orientation leader himself. Out of ten people, only two of them have seen the messages, with Sera being one of them.
If that’s an indicator of how today is going to be, then Sera should have poured some shots into her kombucha like a sane person would have.
“Maybe you should try calling her?” One of the girls in her group says, her gaze never leaving her phone as she types rapidly, her dexterity astonishing despite her inch-long acrylic nails. Mike, on the other hand, stares forlornly at the black screen of his phone.
“No can do. My phone died a few minutes ago when I was in the middle of calling my mom. I guess I was too excited when I was telling her about today’s orientation day.” He laughs half-heartedly at that, and Sera might’ve felt a little bad for the guy if his phone didn’t have a keychain of an anime girl with big ol’ dobonhokeros. The only thing missing from his outfit is a big backdrop of his mom’s basement behind him to complete his look.
Mike looks around the group expectantly, obviously trying to catch the eye of one of you. Everyone’s heads bow down immediately, sensing that some effort and participation are about to be required from one of them. Nothing gets tired teens to disappear into the ground quicker than being asked to volunteer for anything that needed 0.01% of their brainpower. Unluckily for Sera, she is a bit too slow in her response, immediately locking gazes with Mike as a grin stretches on his face.
“Sera! You must know Y/N, right? I saw that you and Y/N had opened the group chat the other day. Why don’t you try calling her?” He says brightly, no signs of his depression from earlier. Two boys in Supreme hoodies snicker loudly at Sera’s dismayed face, and she vows to “accidentally” stomp on their pristine white sneakers later with her muddied old trainers.
“Um. Alright,” she agrees through gritted teeth, pulling out her phone with a heavy hand. Sera wonders if you’ll even take the call, possibly wary of answering an unknown number. Her pondering only lasts a second when you answer the call on the first ring, your heavy breaths being the first sound that greets Sera’s ears.
“I’m lost! I can’t find the soccer field! I’m running as fast as I can,” is your jumbled reply, followed by a screech on your end and what sounds like a honking car in the distance. “Sorry!” you call out immediately afterwards, and Sera hazards a guess that you were only two inches away from being roadkill.
“Yeah, this is Sera, one of your orientation groupmates. Mik–I mean, our orientation leader is wondering where you are.”
“I’m–” There is a pause, and Sera thinks for a moment that you might have dropped the call by accident or something. Then, you reply shakily, sniffling slightly. “I… I don’t know??? Help???”
What is it with today? Sera is meeting more people than she would like, and all of them seem to be the human equivalent of a cry for help. Surely, this is a test from above? However, there is something endearingly pitiful about your quiet sobs that makes her want to help you a little bit. She is never one to offer her services so freely to any stranger, but then again… She could become friends with you if you weren’t such a crybaby all the time.
“Describe where you are. I’ll try to come get you,” she says, not missing the way you gasp at her generosity. A feeling of pride settles into her chest, not disliking the way you must be so grateful for her benevolence. She should do this more often.
“Will you really? Oh my god, thank you!” you say giddily. You are quick to describe your surroundings, and luckily, Sera knows exactly where you are. The good thing about being a perfectionist is that Sera loves to over-prepare, so she already did her own tour of the campus before orientation day. In hindsight, she wonders why she even bothered to attend when she could handle herself perfectly. Oh right, the free stuff.
“Okay, hold tight. Be there in a bit,” she says before hanging up the phone. Sera turns back to Mike, who looks awfully smug for being as inept as he is. He begins to gather the rest of the group together, addressing all of them loudly.
“Thanks to the lovely Sera, our last member will join us shortly. In the meantime, we’ll head to the auditorium for the first event of the day while Sera finds Y/N!”
Wait– “You’re leaving me?” Sera shouts, jaw agape. Isn’t he supposed to be in charge? Whatever happened to teamwork and all that shit he was spouting literally ten minutes ago? Yet, here he was. All Mike the Mighty Ass does is shrug his shoulders, patting her impetuously on the back.
“We’re not leaving you! The auditorium is just over there,” Mike points to the imposing domed stadium just across the field. “And we’ll be seated right at the front, so just look for us there!”
“That stadium has a 7000 person capacity. How the hell am I supposed to–”
Sera doesn’t get to finish her sentiment as Mike raises his gaudy orange flag high up into the sky, signaling the rest of the group to follow his lead. None of the little shits even bat an eye as they quickly leave Sera in the dust to look for you.
As Sera gawks at the rapidly emptying field, she surmises that no number of free water bottle could ever amount to the trauma that the past few hours have inflicted on her. You better kiss the ground that she walks on when she finds you, or else there will be consequences to pay.
Finding you is easier said than done. Sera is sure she knew where you were from your descriptions, though there is a possibility that she might have overestimated herself. Either that or your explanation had been vague at best.
“‘In front of the weird blue houses,' she said,” Sera mutters to herself, looking up at the only blue-painted buildings in sight. She supposes that “weird” is subjective, as the houses appear quaint as can be, though maybe you had found the little garden gnomes at the front to be a bit disconcerting. Regardless, there seems to be no other person in sight, unless the crotchety old man in the wheelchair might be you.
She is just about to call you again when a person with twigs in their hair comes running down the sidewalk, their backpack thumping harshly against their back with every step they take. They are waving their hands wildly in the air, a large grin on their face as they struggle to slow down their momentum before inevitably tumbling into Sera’s slight body.
She found you.
“Ooph!” Sera groans, barely holding onto her senses as she tries her best to keep both of you upright. “What the fuck? Where were you?”
“Sorry, sorry!” You apologize repeatedly, swatting away bits of leaves from your hair that consequently fall onto Sera’s sweater. “I got a bit distracted by this dude at a hair salon and I had to make a run for it–”
“Whatever,” Sera interrupts, tugging you by the elbow and back to where the orientation is being held. “Let’s just get out of here before we miss out on the stupid orientation.”
You stumble a bit as you follow after her quick strides, having to hobble a little to catch up. You tilt your head curiously at your surroundings, not recognizing any of the landmarks at all. “Uh. You sure we’re going the right way? All these buildings look weird…”
“Says the chick who couldn’t even find the soccer field.” Sera snorts, continuing to walk with determination. “If you’re going to ogle at every ‘weird’ building we pass, then it’ll take us years to get there. Hurry up!”
After taking a few wrong turns and reaching two deadends, it is only then Sera admits that she might have forgotten the way back. It’s not her fault; she’s only been on campus for a few hours before. To your credit, you don’t seem all that disheartened as she had expected, unlike how distressed you had sounded on the phone earlier. In fact, you are skipping happily along beside her, pausing every often to take a few pictures of the dormitories and lecture buildings like a tourist.
“It’s like this is the first time that you’ve ever seen a building,” Sera jokes, taking a seat on a bench as she watches you frolic around a water fountain. You strike a weird post at her, smiling radiantly with your teeth showing.
“It’s because I only just moved here! I was late because I was busy unpacking my stuff in my dorm room,” you explain, straightening up into a more dignified posture before going to sit beside her.
Sera looks at you curiously. “Oh? You’re living on res? Are you from out of town?”
You shake your head. “Nah. My mom and I live pretty far off though, and I’d prefer not to take a commute in the morning. It’s chill though; I’m sharing a room with this dude I used to go to high school with.”
“They have co-gendered dorm rooms here?” Sera’s interest is piqued, and you are quick to notice it. You laugh, shrugging your shoulders.
“Uh, kind of? We’re like childhood friends and his mom is really close with the residence dean, so she asked if we could room together, just for the first year. She doesn’t really trust him with strangers. He’s really shy, so he’s uncomfortable rooming with someone he doesn’t know.”
“So, you guys aren’t, like, dating or..?”
“Me? Dating Jungkook? Oh God, that’s funny!” You laugh, slapping your knee. The more you think about it, the more ridiculous the idea is. “He’s like a bro to me! I would never date him.”
Sera smiles, a seed of an idea being planted in her brain. She stores it for later, but for now, she asks “Oh? So you’d be fine with introducing him to me sometime? I’d love to meet new people.”
“Sure, dude. He’s really introverted, so I doubt you’ll get too much out of him,” you hum. You close your eyes, enjoying the way the breeze gently caresses your face as Sera observes you from the sidelines.
Interesting, she thinks. She’ll definitely hang around you more. You are not as annoying as she had originally thought, and maybe it would be nice to have a friend to hang out with in between classes. Unassuming, overly excitable, naive… You’re just an innocent puppy, who will follow anyone who pets it. Easy enough; Sera can afford to accommodate you.
Sera smirks, allowing herself to enjoy the breeze as well. University might not be so bad after all.
A few months pass, and being friends with you isn’t as tedious as Sera had feared. In fact, you are a pretty chill person, someone whom Sera never needs to pretend to save face around. To you, her little mean streaks are nothing but little “quirks,” and you often wave them off as silly parts of her personality. Most of the time, the things Sera says are just that: jokes. More often than not, however, Sera has just grown comfortable around you to let her filter run a little loose, letting her goofier and bitchier side come out more easily.
Call it naivety or stupidity, but Sera is thankful to have you around.
Nevertheless, there are still some small moments when that thankfulness falls a little short. Take, for example:
“That TA is totally a bitch! She gave me an 80 on that essay only because her ex-boyfriend hit me up on Instagram. It’s not my fault that her boobs sag all the way to her hips!” Sera exclaims a little too loudly, and you have to silence her through stilted giggles as the two of you pass by the aforementioned TA.
“Marina isn’t that petty,” you say, though your defense is a little too lackluster to be effective. In fact, you’ve been a bit spacey all afternoon, not really present in most of your conversations together. You exit the lecture hall, walking to the cafeteria to grab some lunch. Sera has to pull you out of the way of two speeding bicycles before she thinks to ask you what’s up.
“Huh?” You mumble back, still smiling dopily at nothing. You’ve always been the type to get lost in your head, which is hilarious to Sera, given that your current debilitating crush is on none other than the most air-headed boy on campus. She supposes there is a certain appeal for opposite personalities, though it is funny that out of all the men on campus, you had to choose the heart-on for none other than–
“I was asking you what’s up with you,” Sera repeats, tutting as the two of you arrive at the cafeteria with no further casualties. “Seriously, it’s like your head is in your ass. Don’t tell me you finally got dicked down in the janitor’s closet and you’re basking in the afterglow.”
Sera’s crude comment is what finally gets you to snap out of it. “Hell no, you sex fiend!” You hiss, cheeks reddening at the jab. “Are you ever going to let that go? I told you that fantasy in confidence!”
“My lips are as loose as my pussy, my dude. You should know by now.” Sera says plainly, directing the two of you to one of the sushi joints. You don’t even protest Sera’s choice like you ordinarily would, as you have previously gotten intense food poisoning from one of their sashimi platters a week back. You must really be overthinking something then.
“I know. I’m just saying shit right now,” you say, pulling up a chair and plopping down. You fiddle with the soy sauce bottle contemplatively. “I’m spacing out because I’ve been thinking about the essay we just got back.”
“Oh?” Sera says, eyebrows lifting at that. She pulls out the menu, taking charge for the two of you as you have never quite mastered the art of choosing what food to get. Also, you’re scared of flagging down waiters, for whatever reason. “Did you also get saggy tits as your TA? I’m still mad about that B+, by the way.”
“That’s the thing,” you pause, accidentally flipping open the soy sauce bottle’s cap and spraying yourself with drops of the dark liquid. Neither of you even flinch when it happens, so used to catastrophes happening when it comes to you. You’re like a walking disaster magnet, and Sera has no idea why karma hates you so much. It’s a miracle that you’re alive, sometimes.
So it does come as a huge surprise to her when you follow up by saying, “She gave me an A+.”
The menu drops out of Sera’s hand. “What?” she nearly screeches, scaring the waiter who had been idly standing by your table. You point an apologetic glance at him as he scurries as far away from the two of you as possible, but Sera is undeterred. The words that had come out of your mouth makes no sense whatsoever.
“But… Marina literally gives no one higher than an A! I’ve got sources from upper years saying that she’s a beast when she grades – there must have been a mistake!” Sera says, not bothering to be polite.
You shrug, looking just as confused. “I thought so too. I was going to talk to her after class a while ago, but thought better of it and decided to not look a gift horse in the mouth… Better to accept it than question it, right?”
Sera hums, not wanting to admit that it was irking her that you didn’t ask the TA about it. Her annoyance is unwarranted, however, because she would’ve done the same. Why argue over a blessing? Still, it pains her to know that you got a higher grade than she did, even though you are taking the writing course as an elective, while Sera is a writing major herself.
The two of you enjoy your meal as if nothing had happened, and that is the first time in a long while since Sera has needed to put a façade around you.
In the next coming sessions, Sera and you begin to realize that the A+ had not been a fluke as you consistently continue to ace the quizzes and assignments for your creative writing course. Your professor has been badgering you to consider switching courses for a week now, and you’ve politely declined each and every time.
“Music is just more my thing, you see,” you explain to him, bowing quickly as you exit out of the room to escape another ten minutes of his incessant pleading.
It’s really starting to grate Sera’s gears a little bit.
The thing is, Sera knows she is being petty. It’s not even a new occurrence for her, as she has been known to ditch people once they start being better at her in anything.
Gymnastics in 4th grade had been a bust when star athlete Jinyoung Choi discovered her flexibility during PE. Mathematics had gone down the drain once Abegail Sun had won the Mathlete Competition for the third time in a row. Writing should have been Sera’s only crowning achievement, as she had always grown up with people around her praising her ability to weave universes with her words.
She can’t share that spotlight, not when she’s been pushed into the shadows numerous times already. This time, she’s not going down without a fight.
The worst part about the whole situation isn’t even that you were like a baby waiting for their candy to be stolen. With Sera’s connections and sly tendencies, it wouldn’t be hard to crush you where you stood. She’s only done it once back in high school, stripped someone of their confidence so savagely that they were forced to move to another school. She is sure she could do it again, but for whatever reason, it feels like it would be too easy of a win.
The worst part is that you didn’t even want the limelight, the success. Creative writing is just a hobby for you, and you certainly don’t deserve the recognition at all. Effort should be awarded its due, and you have certainly never exerted more than a pinky finger’s worth in your entire writing career.
The final straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back, which pushed Sera past the point of reason, comes much later than anyone might have guessed. Sera’s patience is like plastic, sometimes durable and heat resistant, but oftentimes flimsy and tearable. It does not take a genius to figure out that all plastic must melt, one way or another.
Second-year comes, and Sera has all but allowed her simmering hatred to remain as just that: simmering. She is careful never to let it boil over, fearful of letting you see her break in the event that you would retaliate. Her problem is that she had allowed you to grow, forgetting to stomp on your confidence every so often so that you would be forced to depend on her. Now, you have amassed a sizeable following for your writing online, and Sera knows that you could use that power against her if you pleased. Cancel culture can be like the plague, and Sera knows the ins and outs of it better than anyone else.
Sera knows logically that you would never do that to her, as much as you would like to. Your morals restrain you from doing so, which saves Sera from some anxiety of backlash at least. Still, she has to remain careful anyway.
The two of you do not see each other as often as you once did during your first year. As sophomores, your majors require you to take more courses specialized towards your degree, meaning the general education courses that you shared were no longer required. The only time you ever saw Sera is during Creative Writing and the occasional lunch out in between classes.
Despite that, Sera just can’t get away from you, no matter how hard she tries. Your presence is everywhere: on the university newspaper, on the university forums, on club recruitment posters – hell, she thinks she sees some dude wearing a t-shirt with your face and Jungkook’s face printed on the front or something. Worst of all, she hears about you all the time, from her stupid professors who can’t stop waxing poetic about you. Case in point:
“Professor, may I speak to you?” Sera approaches Professor Puth at the front of his podium once class ends, whiffs of musky marijuana hovering around him like a cloud. You give Sera a confused look, about to ask what she wants to ask before she waves you off, urging you to go ahead.
“I’ll see you next Thursday. I got a tutorial right after this,” Sera lies smoothly, poised grin in place. Not really one to question her, you shrug your shoulders, waving both her and your professor goodbye.
“So,” Professor Puth says, peering at Sera. “Sera, right?”
Sera beams at him. “Yes, Professor. Glad you remember me.”
He hums thoughtfully, tongue jutting out as he appraises her with eyes sharper than any stoned person would have. “Yes, of course. What did you want to talk about?”
“You see, I got my assessment draft back this morning, and it says I got a C+ on it, but I’m sure I followed the rubric very carefully. Are you sure there wasn’t a mistake?” Sera says, not a hitch in her voice despite her outrage slowly starting boil over the edge. She’s never felt so humiliated in her life, having to beg like a dog for a regrade like some sort of pitiful loser.
“You might want to ask the TAs about regrading, in that case. I only graded a few of the works. Which one was yours about?”
“The poem about the withering tree, Professor.”
“Oh, yes. I remember that one. I was the one who graded it,” Professor Puth says, rubbing his chin. He tilts his head. “What did you want to ask about it?”
Sera stares at him, disbelief coloring every inch of her face. “Um, I just said… I wanted to ask – I followed the rubric and everything, so how come my grade was…” she trails off, embarrassed.
Professor Puth tuts, swiveling away to approach his desk. Sera follows, unsure for the first time in her life, as he starts rearranging his things to pack up. “Sera, I can e-mail the rubric to you again, if you want. I assure you, there is one essential part of the grading scheme that you forgot, and I’m afraid that is what cost your grade.”
Sera thinks. “Was it… the formatting?”
He barks out a laugh, slamming his papers down as if what she had just said was the funniest thing he’s heard since a Yo Mama joke. “No, of course not. It was the content! The emotion! You cannot just string highfalutin words together and expect the reader to feel moved.”
Sera flinches, offended. “I think those aspects of poetry are very subjective, Professor. Surely, you could ask for a second opinion–”
“I always ask for second opinions when grading assignments,” he says, wagging a finger. “We all agreed that your work was at least a C+, though I had originally graded it a C- at best.”
Once again, for the first time in her life, Sera is at a loss for words. Never has she been so casually humiliated before, especially after all the time she has put in to being nothing but a stellar student for all her professors. This must be some sort of bad dream.
“On the other hand,” he continues, pausing in his packing to stare at Sera. She does not feel like he is truly looking at her; rather, he looks to be lost in thought about something else entirely. “That friend of yours… Miss Y/N, right? I’ve always heard about her from my colleagues.”
The mention of your name causes the hairs on the back of her neck to bristle, and Sera goes defensive immediately. “What about her?” she cautions.
“Oh, just that she’s a wonderful writer. Very moving stories with lots of depth. I was a bit skeptical at first because Professor Whitney has always been a bit of a softie with freshmen… but she was right,” he nods to himself, a small smirk on his face. “That girl… I don’t doubt in the slightest that she could make someone fall in love with her just by writing them a piece.”
The comparison might have hurt less if he had used a different example, anyone else really. Some unknown sap that Sera could tear piece by piece without a shred of remorse, made easier by the fact that she did not have to know and care for them. You, on the other hand…
It has always been you. She rues the day she met you, when she had thought you were nothing but a meek little puppy to play with, not knowing that you had a hidden dagger behind your back. How foolish of her to let her guard down, and it makes her even angrier to think that you had no idea of the pain you have inadvertently caused her. No, she will make you understand her pain, her struggle. It is only right and just.
All she had to do was wait for an opportunity to strike and until then… It should be easy to keep up this charade. She has done it for more than a year, and she can do it for another ten. She has been doing it all her life, in fact.
When that day comes, she’ll be ready, and there’s nothing you can do but watch as she burns your whole world to the ground.

April 7th, 1988.
“Jane Sato, date of Biological Alteration and Repair test run, April 7th, 1988. Time, 1:07 Pm. Subject 1010; 20 years of age, male, 129 lb, 5′9. Biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, DNA-Polymerase, chromosomal translocation, and genetic isolates are among the primary research conducted for the operation. The patient’s condition of severe cell degeneration, Sickle-cell disease, and genetic malformations —” She paused, the recorders red light still on, “— compatible with all inquiries of biogenetic mutation and enhancement. Surgery will commence accompanied by surgeons, Jackson Blanchard, Stephanie Liu, Hanz Fai, and surgical nurse Joyce Brown. Surgery will now begin.”
The scientists and doctors in the facility watched from the viewing room, standing right at the glass so they wouldn’t miss a thing. Her personal favorite, clair de lune, was the last song on the playlist in the background. After roughly 7 hours, the operation was complete.
“Alright,” She inspected with work they had done over several hours. The surgical mask, gown, and gloves were beginning to become a part of her from how long she had them on, “stitch him up.”
She went to the sink in the back where she had left the recorder and thrown her gloves away.
“7:40 PM. The operation was successful. All vital signs are normal and patient 1010-FS is expected to recover well.”
She washed up before greeting the group of eager professionals who came to witness history. She clears her throat. “Alright, questions?”
‘I have a question doctor. Last month, you discussed the possibility of a program dedicated to your research, can you tell us more about that?’
She nods. “Yes. I‘ve served the Medical Science Advisory for three years now and since the opening of the SRMA Facility, I’ve come far with my research. Starting next year, my program will start.”
“What does the program entail exactly?”
“First, 120 volunteers from all over the country will take part in the experimentation. I won’t reveal everything but I will say this, the participants will undergo extreme DNA modifications and molecular mutation on a supernatural level.”
***
October 19th, 1992. 4 years post-program.
The program commenced in 1989 and experimentations took place at the Science-Medical Facility. Just as she planned, 120 participants were under intensive study and experimentation. More volunteers came from all over, ranging from ages 10 to 30, per Dr. Sato’s request. Recently, Sato had begun to categorize the most and least successful cross-studies. The 4% of experiments with the M2-gene were separated to undergo intensive modification.
“Jane.”
“Yes?” She measured the potent liquid, one drop more and it would kill the receiver.
“Patient 1072.” Her assistant, Diana, placed the clipboard in on the doctor’s work table. “She’s been showing a lot of physical and behavioral progress.”
“1072, she’s in the lower level group, yeah? That’s good” Sato flipped through a book, her gaze softening. “Look at this, in 1973 in the United Kingdom, this poor thing was born with Tay-Sachs disease. She had seizures, vision and hearing loss, intellectual disability, and paralysis and she died at the age of 3.” She sighed. “I could have saved that girl and given her a life without pain and suffering. Those doctors didn’t know what they were doing...that’s why she died.”
Diana cleared her throat, nodding as she waits for the doctor to notice that she came here for something else.
“I’m sorry, what about 1072?”
“Oh, she’s receiving the DNA modification well, I think she can join the 4%.”
“Let me have a look-”
The facility speakers blared.
Dr. Sato to room B012.
“I guess I’ll have to wait.” Sato slipped her reading glasses off and made her way to the elevator so she could get to the 9th floor.
“Doctor, thank God.” Blanchard was standing in front of the patient's room with a few of their colleagues.
“What’s going on?”
“The experiment, he’s developed his first sign of mutation. His body is still weak but he has physical changes, you’d be amazed.” Her eyes brightened, this was her favorite part of the program, witnessing the changes. “We’ve watched him for 4 hours straight and well- You have to see him yourself.”
“Show me.”
He opened the door and let her walk in by herself, the boy sat up on the bed, seemingly normal aside from his extreme lack of pigment in his eyes, they looked translucent, almost pale. That was new. She approached him.
“Touch my hand.” She spoke, waiting for him to do it. “Go on, it’s okay.” He slowly reached his hand to place it on hers. Warm, his hand was warm and she felt a pang of heat in her chest, he winced, retreating his hand immediately.
“You’re coming along great.” She insisted. “Get some rest and you’ll get your medicine shortly.” She left the boy to sit in the room.
“Did you see it, doctor?”
“Yes. Continue testing and make a date for his procedure.” She instructed and he nodded. She was about to walk down the hall but she paused. “Oh, and move him up to the 4%.”
“Stupid earrings!” You kick the side of your vanity, instantly regretting it when a surge of pain went up to your leg.
The only pair of diamond earrings you owned were missing and you had 10 minutes to get to the subway or bus for the North Heights. Half of your hair was okay while the other side looked like a mangled up tumbleweed. You got the sleeve of your blouse caught in the bleach water for dishes so you had to change for the third time. This morning was starting off pretty rough.
Margaret never specified a time until 6 o’clock this morning. She said Mr. Kim has appointments all day after 9 so, ‘Be here by 7:30.’ You live a half-hour away, and that’s when the bus isn’t late or if you catch a taxi on a good day. It was currently 6:47 and you were vigorously passing a comb through your hair. At this point, it doesn’t even matter if you look like Synthia from the Rugrats, you had to get out of here. You grabbed a ponytail holder and tied it up, at least you had somewhat of a presentable style now. Your little skirt and top would have to work with a pair of flats because there is no way you’re running around this city in heels today.
“How is it 7 already!?” You glanced at the microwave clock and cursed it for mocking you. The yogurt you attempted to eat would have to wait until you come back. You threw your bag onto your shoulder and bolted out of the door.
You ran down the few flights of stairs, stopping in front of the complex and holding your cell phone in your hand to search the bus and subway schedule. “Off of Miller and Maine- Departed?!- That’s it, the world has it out for me.”
The subway was too far of a walk and the 7 o'clock bus just left, there is no way you’re gonna get there before 7:45. “Why...” You looked around, about to wave down a taxi when a man in a tapped your shoulder. “Taxi!-”
“Excuse me, Miss?”
“Yes?” You furrowed your brows, wondering what this older fellow might want that apparently can’t wait.
“Are you Y/f/n?” You noticed the gentlemen wore a black chauffeur hat and uniform.
“Yes, can I help you, sir?- Wait, how do you know my name?” You gave him a suspicious expression.
“I am your driver for this morning ma’am, Bernard Shelton. Mr. Kim sent a car for you. I knocked on your apartment door but you must not have heard me. He requested that I apologize on is behalf for the short notice.” You looked past him to see a black luxury vehicle with tents that might as well have been a black hole. “Are you ready to go?”
“Um,” You didn’t know if you could trust this guy, despite his convincing attire and professional mannerisms. “I’m sorry but how do I know Mr. Kim sent you? I mean, wouldn’t he have his secretary tell me this?”
“Would you like to contact Ms. Gough for verification? We’re already running late and Mr. Kim has appointments all day after 9 o’clock. We really must be going, ma’am.” You glanced at your watch, it was 7:09, this is your best bet.
“Alright...” With hopes that you weren’t getting kidnapped, you followed him in the car and sat anxiously in the backseat. Your fingers grazed the flawless interior, making you wonder why a car of this prowess came to pick you up. Upon request of the CEO at that.
“We’re here ma’am, with one minute to spare.” He smiled, stopping you in front of the huge skyscraper in the middle of the fine part of the city.
“Thank you.” You hopped out of the car and made your way inside. The lobby was far more beautiful than the one at your office. There were sparkling light fixtures, expensive paintings gracing to tall walls and you found your self-walking towards the front desk slower than you should have.
“Hello, I have an appointment with Mr. Kim at 7:30.”
The woman looked through her computer and she couldn’t hide the judgments glint in her eye when she looked at you. “Your name?”
“Y/n.”
She picked up the black corded phone. “Margeret, I have a Y/n here to see Mr. Kim, would you like me to send her up?” A few seconds went by and she nodded. “Alright, I'll send her up.” She put the phone back on the hook. “You can go ahead. Top floor, directly in front of you when you exit the elevator, his secretary is to the right of his office.”
“Thank you.” Quickly, you went to the elevator and took it straight up to the top floor. A light ‘ding’ noise and you were let out on the quiet floor, not a single soul making a sound on the pristine floor.
“Excuse me,” You walked up to the desk that said ‘Margeret Gough.’ “Ms. Gough?”
“You’re here.” She had a kind smile. “He’s waiting for you, he just got off of his first-morning call. One moment,” She pressed a red button on the phone hook, “you’re 7:30 is here sir, should I send her in now?” She was talking to Taehyung.
“Yes, you can send her in.”
Your courage started to falter when you heard his voice, now you were really, really nervous. But now is not the time to be timid—you have to hold your head high and walk in there with confidence.
“Okay, sir.” A beep signaled that he turned off the phone. “Go on ahead.” She gestured to the door, a kind simper beckoning you to go in. “No need to be nervous, Mr. Kim is in a very good mood this morning.” She giggled, a grin tugging at the corner of her mouth.
“Just breathe...” You mumbled, slowly pushing open one of the two tall double doors at the end of the hall.
Your eyes met him instantly as he stood in front of the window the covered the entire wall. The view was ridiculous.
His eyes widened upon your entrance. “Good morning.” He smiled a bit, one hand on a coffee mug while the other rested in his pocket. The dainty necklace with a tiny diamond on the end of it brought his attention to the v neck of your camel-colored blouse.
“Good morning, Mr. Kim.” You brought a had to the side of your neck briefly and that small movement prompted his eyes to find the soft indent of your collarbones.
He cleared his throat. “I apologize for this being so short notice, I hope it’s not too much of an inconvenience for you.” By the time he walked over to the gesture that you sit, you had already made yourself comfortable in the small leather chair in front of his desk.
“Don’t worry about it. Thank you for sending the car, by the way, you really didn’t have to do that.” It was a kind gesture but you didn’t feel it was necessary.
“No, it was the least I could do. Last night, I remembered I had these meetings to do and I couldn’t help but want to do one with you since we talked last night.” He sipped his coffee. “So, I asked Margeret to contact you.” He swiveled his chair a bit. “I guess we should get right into it then, yeah?”
“What is it, exactly?”
“Just reviewing company regulations, how you think your locations management is, things like that...” He laid a sheet of paper with a bunch of questions and long black lines, right in front of you. “Would you fill that out? It’s like a survey, a business owner seminar suggested I get to know the business and this was one way to do it.”
“Alright...” You did what you had to do, writing simple answers to questions like, ‘how does your management treat you? Do you feel like an important part of the team?’ Important? Eh, sure, you thought, trying to compile meaningful sentences. After five minutes or so, you were on the very last question and before your pen touched the paper, you froze. “D-did you say something?”
The confusion on his face probably meant no. “No.”
“Oh, sorry, I thought I heard something...” You bashfully went back to the paper, quickly scribbling down an answer before setting the pen back in the pen holder. “I’m done.”
“Great. So, how did you feel about the survey? Margeret made the questions with her assistant, she said this would be a good way to see how the employees feel about the company. It wasn’t too boring I hope.”
“It was fine,” It was a generic survey.
“Let me ask you, do you feel like a valued employee?” The question was pretty simple, but you found yourself scrambling for a response that clearly expressed how you felt.
“Valued? Um...” This was going to sound pessimistic but oh well. “Well, if I quit today and someone gets hired to take my job tomorrow, does that change your profits in any way?” He assumed it was a rhetorical question. “No, I don’t think it does. So how important could I be to you? Sure, I think I’m valued but I see it this way, there’s a job that needs to be done and I’m just the person who does it, no one too special...” He had never heard such an unenthusiastic statement from an employee before, he always viewed his father's company as one big family but based on what you were saying, it wasn’t as family-oriented as he believed.
“I’m sorry, that sounds kind of negative, doesn’t it?” His silence made you realize that what you said was probably the last thing a boss wanted to hear. “I don’t hate my job, I just don’t see the point in fabricating anything, Mr. Kim. Your company is great and all, but for me, it’s just a job that helps support me...”
“Well,” Your eyes followed him as he walked to the cute little coffee maker to fill up his mug again, “is there anything I can do to make your job more enjoyable? I don’t want you to feel like you’re a machine in a factory, you are an important member of this company. I mean that.”
“Look,” You sighed, standing up from your chair to walk near the window, taking this opportunity to appreciate the cities beauty from a bird's eye view, “I chose to work for you because it’s a reputable company and your cameras are nice.” When you glanced at him, he saw your real smile for the first time, your teeth showing and everything. Sadly, you shielded it from his sight as he approached you. “If it’s worth anything, I think you’re doing a good job with this whole CEO thing, in my professional opinion at least.” You smiled, he deserved some type of praise for reaching out to his people like this.
“Thank you, that means a lot.” The urge to walk up to you and tangle his finger in the stray strand of hair in your ponytail but he resisted. “You know, because of you, we discontinued Model 0XHS-5D.”
He was standing beside you now. “Really?”
“Yes, and it has impacted sales positively. We cut off the manufacture and it shows in the stock market, all because of you Y/n.”
“Oh, that’s good, I’m glad I could be of some assistance...” When you sensed him trying to stand a bit too close for comfort, you walked back to your seat. The lack of sleep was kicking in because you found yourself leaning against the side of the chair with your forearm—and the coffee in his hand smelled like heaven. He followed you, taking his previous position in his chair.
“I like the idea of...I don’t know, talking to someone I already know, it’s refreshing.”
“With all due respect sir, you don’t really know me.” The coo in your voice wasn’t intentional but you were just being honest. “Sure, we talked at the party and last night, but other than that...We’re strangers.” You trailed off, not really sure how you were supposed to end that statement.
“Y/n.” He breathed, thinking he may as well just outright say it—it would happen eventually. “Would you join me for lunch? My lunch appointment canceled before you came, so I have a reservation that I don’t have to cancel if you join me.”
Lunch? That was the last thing you were expecting to hear this morning. His eyes seemed to latch onto you and refuse to let you go until you answered his question.
“L-lunch? I appreciate the offer but...” You swallowed, for a split second, you considered taking him up on the offer but you quickly dismissed the preposterous idea. I can’t do that, he’s my boss. “But I can’t, I have to get back to work, it’s already past 8 and I- I don’t think that’s the best idea given I kinda work for you...”
“Work’s not a problem, I gave all survey participants the day off anyway. A 12:30 lunch is more than appropriate for our relationship I think...” Eager, that’s what he probably looked like, but the desperation to get near you was hard to ignore. That same way you looked on the terrace at the party, you still looked that way and he couldn’t just disregard it.
You locked eyes with him—tempting, very much so, but no. Absolutely not.
“I’m sorry,” You stood to your feet and he followed suit, standing much taller than you, especially without your trusty high heels on. “but I can’t.”
Any hopes of a day accompanied by you came crashing down as you politely rejected him. The only person he wanted to dine with at that restaurant didn’t want anything to do with him. The way you nibbled on your bottom lip implied that you were starting to feel uncomfortable. He took a small step back, you were dying to get out of here and he was perplexed onto why.
A beep interrupted you, it was Margeret.
“Your 8:30 is here, should I send them in?”
He was quiet, still peering at you as if it would change your final answer. Sadly for him, it did nothing for his cause...
He pressed the button on the phone base. “Give me one moment.”
“Well, I guess I’ll be going now-” You tried to gather your purse and get out of dodge but he stopped you.
“No wait, take this.” He grabbed a business card and wrote a string of numbers and words on it. “This is my personal cell.” He handed it to you. “With this number, I’m Taehyung, not Mr. Kim. So, if you feel more comfortable going to lunch with him,” He smiled halfheartedly. “he’ll be there.”
“Alright...” You tucked it into your purse and bowed respectfully before turning your back to leave.
“Do you like jazz or classical music?”
You paused, you weren’t expecting such a question. “Um, I enjoy both. Why?”
There was an itch at the back of his neck and he satisfied the nuisance with the tip of his index finger. “I thought maybe that was why we ended up at that cafe last night, a common interest.”
“Yeah, maybe...” You mumbled, turning around to continue your path out the door.
Meeting with Taehyung wasn’t so bad after all, you scored a day off. You took it upon yourself to get a few things done and spend a little time with one of your only friends. He was being currently studying medicine, technology, science - things like that. He offered to come to your favorite cafe to study with you and a few minutes ago, his lab partner joined you two. The bug seemed to have gotten to them too...
The cafe had the news on in the background and they were playing the same news bit from last night which led Hoseok to strike up a conversation with the lab girl he’s always with.
“What do you think about the 1989 Project? Does your supervising physician ever talk about it? Especially since the media won’t shut up about it.” Hoseok, your good friend for a few years now met you at the cafe so you could catch up on your language studies.
“She’s mentioned it a few times but I try not to ask about it.” Wendy decided to join you two as well, she and Hoseok were going to school for the same thing so they often studied together.
“What do you think about it Y/n?” Hoseok looked to you. Given you were really into that whole medical and technology thing, you wondered why he had to ask.
“Um,” You took out one earbud, “I don’t know, it’s interesting I guess.” Assuming he was going to continue talking, you kept the earbud out.
“I used to think that the Zoe Hawn case was always so freaky, it’s one of the reasons I’m studying at the SRMA Facility, I want to be a part of something that’ll do some good. Crossbreeds, crosses, hybrids- Whatever they're called, I know for a fact that there are experiments still at the laboratory.”
Wendy crooked a brow. “How would you know that?”
“I’m an intern at the facility, I listen in on the scientists and doctors sometimes. There’s a floor that you have to have level five clearance to be on and I’ve peeked in a few times.” You remembered you had a medical and scientific savvy best friends who would never drop the conversation.
Wendy chimed in. “Yeah, I’ve never seen the patients in there, they say some of them look like everyday people, others -- not so much. I wonder if there are even patients in there, it might just be something else.”
“Interesting...” It had been some time since you left Taehyungs office and you rubbed the business card between your fingers, staring down at the numbers and restaurant name. “Pain Grillé...” You whispered the name to yourself, you had seen that place before, your co-workers often mentioned the fancy place—maybe going wouldn’t be so bad...
“What was that?” Wendy tilted her head, her honey blonde hair shifting on her shoulders.
“Oh, nothing...” Nothing you wanted to discuss with them.
Hoseok smirked. “What’s that in your hand? You’ve been staring at it every few minutes now, is it a love note from an admirer or something?” He teases, the blush on your cheeks and the knitting of your brows only made your reaction all the more amusing
“No, dummy.” You kicked his foot. “It’s not a love note. I was asked to lunch and the name of the restaurant is on this card.”
“So, why are you here?”
“Because I’m not going.” That card was dropped back into your purse, you regretted taking it out in the first place.
“Why not? Lunch at Pain Grille sounds great -- and expensive.” He wondered, what special person wanted to take you there?
“I just rather not, that’s all.” It’s time for a subject change, “I have to go, I’m dog walking all evening so...” You grabbed your notebook and put the rest of your things in your tote. “Bye guys.”
Mr. and Mrs. Lafonso asked you to walk and feed their Pomeranian while they’re out and that’s what you were doing. Dog walking on the side is way underrated, it was what you did when you first moved out here to earn some extra cash. It was sort of a depressing time in your life, you lived in a tiny hotel and worked in a diner until you could save enough to find your own place. Living on your own wasn’t easy at first—a young 18-year-old that was struggling to get by in the big city with a few hundred dollars or so and a heavy suitcase. You got offers from guys to be their sugar-babies and if you were honest, you considered it a few times, the check from your part-time jobs looked like chump change in comparison to the money those guys were offering you. You didn’t have much but you had dignity and morality, no amount of money could take that away. And that’s what kept you going, you knew you could to make it and you did, all by yourself.
“Ugh...” It was beginning to drizzle and you were about to walk down to get to the subway station but you stopped, Pain Grillé. Kim Taehyung could be seen through the window, sitting at the table alone as the swoon waiter brought him a glass of wine.
The grumble of your stomach indicated that it was a marvelous idea—darn your appetite. You turned around and strolled across the street to get to the restaurant, your actually about to do this. When you walked inside, the lump in your throat was stopping you from speaking to the hostess at the desk.
“Good afternoon ma’am, can I help you?” She was a sweet lady, beckoning you to come to her.
“Oh,” Clearing your throat, you smiled, “I’m meeting Kim Tae-”
“Oh, you’re her!” She sounded a bit flustered like she knew you were coming but forgot. “I’m so sorry ma’am, I’ll get you seated, right this way.” She grabbed a menu and urged you to follow.
Her?
“Mr. Kim said he was expecting a special guest, he told me to make sure I bring you over myself. I’m the owner, Audrey. He loves this place, comes here for all of his special lunch appointments.” Her jaw-length bob bounced as she walked you through the busy restaurant. When he looked up from his phone and saw you, one would think you two were pretty close because of his childishly wide smile. I knew she would come...
“Here you are! Your waiter will be over shortly. Enjoy!” With that, she was gone, and you both stood there.
“You came...” He beamed, still in awe that you took him up on his offer. You were about to speak as you reached to pull out your chair. “Yeah, I-”
“Wait, let me get that for you.” He rushed to the chair to pull it out for you.
“Thank you...” You shuffled the chair forward, now you were a few inches away from the pristine white tablecloth.
“No, thank you for joining me, for a moment there I thought you wouldn’t show up.” He took his wine glass, sipping it briefly. Unbeknownst to him, it was sheer coincidence that led you here.
“Oh? Well, here I am...” You scanned the menu slightly as you glanced up at him.
You don’t mind a little wine with your lunch, do you? They have wines that pair beautifully with every meal, I’ve tried the whole menu. I went with a Muscadet today, easy-drinking in my opinion.” He would have a knowledgeable understanding of wines, why wouldn’t he?
“I don’t mind, I enjoy a glass every so often.” Maybe a few times a month -- week.
The corner of his lips “So-”
“Good afternoon ma’am, can I get you started with something to drink?” The waiter asked and Taehyung glanced at him with an impatient glint, he was interrupting something.
“I’ll have a Mascoto please.” You thanked the waiter as he went off to get your sweet bubbly beverage. Day-drinking—I guess, when in Rome do as the Romans, you thought to yourself.
“Good choice.” He bit his lip, his tongue peeking out to run over his lips in a tantalizing way. Out of habit, he tapped his fingers on the table. “I admit that I’m probably coming on a bit strong, yeah?” You nodded. “I don’t mean to come after you, I genuinely just want to get to know you...”
He’s still on that. “Sir-”
“Taehyung...” He reminded you. “Call me Taehyung, please.” That smirk—God, why is he smirking at me like that?
“Taehyung,” You emphasized the call of his name, “I’m flattered but I’m no different from anybody else...” Thank goodness the waiter brought your wine to you, you needed it right about now. “I’m sure there are plenty of women who have extravagant lives they can tell you about over lunch, why me?” You scoffed bitterly. “It doesn’t add up to me-”
“I don’t want to know just any of those women, I want to know you.” He countered. “That whole ‘there’s nothing to know about me’ act, I just don’t believe it, everybody has a story.”
“I don’t.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you almost look believable when you lie?”
You choked mid-sip. “Excuse me?-”
“Are you two ready to order?”
He was starting to spite this waiter. “Uh, yes, I’ll have my usual, what about you, love?” He was looking at you.
Still taken aback by his statement, you ordered. “I’ll have the chicken marsala with a side salad, please.” He nodded, taking the menus away to leave you two alone. You glared at him. “Lie? What makes you think-” He cut you off.
“If you don’t mind me asking, are you close with your family?” That was a personal question that you weren’t expecting to have to answer today.
“You expect me to answer your questions after you called me a liar?” You scoffed. “I don’t think so...”
He sighed, not breaking eye contact in the slightest as he sipped his wine. “Is there anyone, anyone at all, a mother, sister, friend, anyone you’re really close with? Anyone you can share your heart with, talk about difficult things with. You seem like the loner type...”
“It doesn’t matter.” You quipped rather defensively. “I don’t really need anyone to talk to, I’m doing fine on my own. As far as my family goes, well, I’m not a representation of my family, I’m just me...”
“So you’re not close to your parents?” He tilted his head curiously. You gazed down at your silver fork, solemnly—you never talk about stuff like this.
“No...” You uttered lowly, not liking where he was going with the invasive questions. “They died when I was a newborn, I was adopted by my uncles family...”
“Oh...” He felt bad for asking now. “I’m sorry to hear that,” You flinched, he cupped the top of your hand with his own large one, a softness in his eyes, “I’m sure growing up was hard for you, yeah?...”
“I mean, you could say that...” Oddly, you let him keep his hand on your own but it didn’t last long. “Can we drop this subject, please? I really don’t like talking about it.” You slid your hand back, an awkward grin showing your discomfort.
“Of course, sorry,” He sounded flustered, “I didn’t mean to pry.” The waiter had come back and sat the food in front of you two, you both thanked him. It smelled divine and Taehyung had already dug into his meal. You stabbed the nicely sliced tomato, sticking it in your mouth slowly as you eyed him intently.
“Y’know...” He began.
You forgot that people actually talk to one another when they go out to eat, it’s been so long it seemed weird. You were just about ready to tape his mouth shut because of all of these questions weren’t allowing you to eat. The chicken on your fork would have to wait. “What?”
“I know this may be a little awkward since I’m your boss and all, but we’re both adults.” Awkward? That was an oversimplification.
He lowered his voice. “This morning, when you said you heard something,” He bit his lip, “I whispered something to myself...I said it so low, I could barely hear myself say it, but you did.” His gaze focused on you intensely. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it, how could you have heard something that was as quiet as a thought?”
Fear. A blanket of utter terror wrapped around you as you struggled to gulp the lump in your throat. “I- I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You choked, hands beginning to tremble when you pushed them in your lap.
“Are you sure? Because I think you do.” He was starting to rub you the wrong way.
You are eating lunch in a restaurant with a man that you work for and he sees no problem with it. Not only that, but you saw a few employees from the Heights office and they wouldn’t stop staring and whispering when they saw you. Free lunch at the expense of your antisocial way of life. Those workers knew your face now, what if this went bad? It would look bad on a new boss was seen with a lower level employee like you, what would they think? This is why you didn’t want to do this, this was a bad idea. Thoughts raced through your mind but the only one that you could grasp was the thought of him knowing—you wanted to throw up.
“Are you okay? Your face is flushed.” His eyes widened in concern.
“I- I’m fine, it’s just a little hot in here.” You fanned yourself lightly, reaching for the glass of wine and finishing it off but still feeling parched. Suddenly, a dull ache throbbed in your temples and your brows furrowed in discomfort.
“Excuse me,” he stopped a waiter, “can you bring me a glass of water please?”
“No, no, thank you for everything but I really have to go.” You were pushing yourself away from the table and in a matter of seconds, you were making your way through the restaurant and flying out the door. When you walked out of that place you felt like you could breathe. The gears were turning in your head, anxiety began to eat away at your bones and you couldn’t contain it anymore. Panting, you stood in the busy street, trying to gather yourself. You shook your head, your ears aching as if someone had set a firework off right next to you. Eager to get home, you got on the subway and held on to the safety bar. You felt hot, it as if everything was burning inside you. It scared you to death, people would try to get close, ask too many questions—
it made you sick to your stomach.
Home, that was your goal. When you got off the subway, you made your dog walking stops. Starting from the farthest apartment complex to your own. A pit bull, two chihuahua’s and a brown lab, it took about 2 hours. The Lafonso’s canceled last minute so you were thankful because nature decided that you deserved to suffer this evening. The rain was relentless. It was pouring down, your clothes were drenched, sticking to you in the worst way as you walked down the street, desperate to get home. No one offered to walk you under their umbrella, not that you would accept the offer anyway. A nice hot shower was all you wanted.
“Huh...” You sigh, dragging your soaked frame up the stairs. You closed your eyes, taking in a deep breath. You dug into your pocket to take out you’re house key. “Where is that thing?-...”
Notice from the city — Sorry we missed you!
We missed you! You were not available when we came to introduce the new monthly policy. Do not be alarmed, as a government, we want to ensure the health and safety of our people through all necessary methods. If you have any questions, contact us at 747-”
B.S.—You rip the bright orange paper off the door, crumbling it up into a ball, and throw it in the trash bin as you entered your home. It’s disgusting. The government has their sneaky ways of getting what they want, one way or another. Just as you do every night, you flipped the light switch to get some light in your dark little living room. You flicked it twice but there was no light—just your luck. The light bulbs are out. You toss your purse on the couch to go search for some extra light bulbs.
For some reason the light bulbs refused to be found, you checked under the kitchen sink, then the supply closet—I know I bought some.
“There we go.” On the very top shelf, the new pack of bulbs sat in the far corner. You had no clue why you put it there but you reached up on your tippy-toes and grabbed the pack.
Sighing, you untwisted the dead bulb from under lampshade and sat it on the coffee table. As you were about to screw in the new bulb, suddenly, you heard low footsteps in the hall and you tensed as the unknown person passed your door.
You absentmindedly screwed in the bulb. “Who in the- Agh!” A sharp burst of glass and light happened in your hands and scared the life out of you. The light bulb previously in your hand now exploded, the shards of glass missing your finger so by less than an inch.
You rush to your kitchen to get a broom and dustpan. “Cheap bulbs, what can you expect...” You cleared your throat, shuffling over to clean up the mess. When you glanced at your buzzing cellphone, you had easily predicted who it was on the other end. You picked it up and held it between your shoulder and ear. “Hi, Hoseok.”
“Hey, I was just calling to check on you. I saw you weren’t answering your texts so I got worried.”
Always so concerned for you, you were lucky to have at least one friend like him.
“Oh, I was really busy today, I didn’t even see your texts. Sorry about that.” You walked into the kitchen as Hoseok explained that he was just making sure you got home safely. He was also pretty curious about who went to lunch with today, you wouldn’t say. “Don’t worry about it Hoseok, it was just lunch and it’s not happening again. Now, I wish I didn’t have to run but I got caught in the rain and I need a shower-”
Footsteps. You heard footsteps in the hall again, and this time, they stopped right in front of your door.
“Y/n?”
“Wait one second...” You whispered, trying to stealthily tiptoe to the door but there was a knock. This time, you were sure it was probably Jan, it had to be...
“Hello?”
No, that’s a man's voice.
“Anyone home?”
Just as you were about to peek through the peep-hole, a paper began to slip through the crack of the door and fall to the floor in front of you. The person had quickly walked away after that and you bent down to inspect the paper.
“Y/n, is everything okay?”
You forgot Hoseok was still on the phone.
“Yeah...I’m good. Hey, I’ll talk to you later, okay?”
“Okay, goodnight.”
“Night...” You hung up the phone, staring down at the paper.
You have failed to submit your birth records to the SRMA for the 4th year in a row. 5 years with unsubmitted records is considered a felony as of 2 months ago. You have one year to submit your records before you are put under high suspicion of the state. At the bottom of the paper, a printed signature was signed. Ordered by Senator Nelson Green.
“Ugh, not again...” You were about to crumble up the paper, but you paused. You don’t even know if your birth certificate is legitimate. You were adopted and for all you knew, your parents had altered the thing, it’s unlikely, but it’s still a possibility. You had never turned them in for the mere fact that it wasn’t against the law, it was just a strong and annoying suggestion. Until now.
“I’ve never met anyone like her before and I don’t want to let her slip through my fingers...” He was at his penthouse and his best friend, Jimin, was day house-sitting for him. Taehyung sat on the couch with his matching pajama set on and pillow snug in his grasp as the television served to fill in the silence gap.
“She must be gorgeous for you to be this messed up about her.” Jimin sat on the recliner with a bowl of ramen.
“I went to lunch with her today.”
“Oh? So you’ve already gone on a date?”
“Not exactly, my lunch appointment canceled so I asked her if she wanted to join me. She came but I really don’t think she wanted to be there. It may have to do with the fact that I’m kind of her boss...”
“She works for you?!” Jimin couldn’t hide his shock.
Taehyung sighs. “Don’t sound so surprised, she works in the customer service department downtown.”
“Woah, what does your dad think about you getting involved with an employee?”
“Who said anything about getting involved? I don’t think she likes me all that much, she’s kind of a closed book, doesn’t like to talk much. I just asked her to lunch, nothing more nothing less.” He knew it was far much more than that.
“But you want this to turn into something more, don’t you?” Jimin knew the answer. And so did Taehyung. But the thought of verbalizing his want for you made it less real, less tangible.
“Yes- No, I don’t know, I just want to get to know her, that’s all.” Taehyung laid on the arm of the couch, lost in his thoughts. There was no denying that you were hiding something from him, he knew that for a fact. But getting you to open up and be comfortable with him seemed to be the hardest part of all. Why was he so drawn to you? And why did you hide that you felt the same?
A few days later.
It’s a few days since your meeting with Taehyung and you were back to your normal life. Unfortunately, the news that you had gone out with the CEO for lunch was the subject of conversation for the cubicles not too far from you. None of them have dared to ask you about it, for reason that you weren’t quite sure of. You just knew that the only way you were going to get those girls to stop gossiping was to ignore them completely.
You had quite a few calls this morning, no more than usual on a busy day but they came in back to back. Most of them were calling in regards to the new camera that just came out. Some were complaints, others were genuinely curious questions. Your supervisor came out of his office and you watched him survey the room until his eyes landed on you.
“Y/n, come to my office please.” He walks back to his office, urging you to follow.
You swallowed, putting the phone back on the hook and walking to his office. Honestly, you couldn’t imagine what he wanted.
“Yes?”
“You’ve been doing a great job, so don’t think I called you in here because you’re in trouble.” Those words soothed your weary expression. “I was asked by Mr. Kim, to give you this envelope this morning.” He reached into his desk to pull out a white envelope. “Here you go.”
“Oh, thank you.” You took the envelope and walked back to your cubicle. In the solitude of your little space, you opened up the envelope.
__, You’re probably wondering why I didn’t just call or text you. I wanted to know if you could meet me at the club we talked at the other night, I have something really important to talk to you about, please come.
Love, Kim Taehyung.
“Huh...”
“What’s that?” Your coworker in the cubicle across from you noticed the envelope in your hands.
“Oh, nothing, just some notice from HQ or something...” You opened up your desk and shoved it in your drawer. She didn’t look too convinced but she left the subject alone for the most part.
You laid on your bed, pen in your hand, notebook in your lap, and earbuds snug in your ears. Excessive studying had begun to bore you. You decided to set the book down and scroll through your phone absentmindedly.
I had a great time Suzette
You froze, eyes widening in suspicion. You sat up, seeing if someone had opened your room door or something. Where did that come from? It sounded oddly like her uncle's voice.
The kids are home, my mom and niece are taking care of them, but my wife doesn’t get off until 7 today
You were sure that was him now. You weren’t sure where it was coming from especially since you had your music on full blast. But when you took the earphones, you could hear the conversation amplified. Quietly, you sneaked up to your window on your hands and knees, pushing hair away from your face. To your distaste, you saw your uncle, leaning into the window of some woman's car—for your aunt's sake, you hoped that woman was just a friend.
I’ll see you on Friday, bring your swimsuit
He kissed her cheek—ok so they’re definitely more than friends. To ensure that he didn’t see you, you scurried away from the window and ran downstairs to help your grandma with dinner. After you washed up, you began to cut the vegetables for the salad as Daisy, the toddler of the bunch, played in the living room with her older brother.
“Hey guys, I’m home.”
The little kids, all 4 of them ran up to greet their dad, you merely waved. Little did they know, their daddy wasn’t the superhero of a man he portrayed himself to be.
“Food smells good mom.” He walked into the kitchen to search the fridge for something to drink as he always did.
“Thanks, son, it’s your favorite, stewed chicken and rice.” She smiled as he pecked her cheek. Now it was time to greet the only teenager in the house.
“How was school, __?”
“It was school, nothing special.” You mumbled, cutting the tomato with one of your earbuds still in.
“Oh, well, just so you all know, I have to go out of town on-”
“Friday?” You suddenly blurted out, earning you an odd look from him.
“Yeah, how did you know?” He furrowed his brow in suspicion.
Save yourself Y/n. “Um, just a guess.” He looked like he thought nothing of it and went back to the conversation. It took everything in you not to say what you saw, what you heard. It burned at the tip of your tongue.
After dinner.
You stood in front of the sink, washing dishes like you always did after dinner. Even though you all had a dishwasher, grandma always insisted that you wash them by hand. It was annoying but you did it.
“Hey, your aunt wanted to know if you’ll take Josie to elementary school tomorrow, she’s gotta go in early.” Uncle walked into the kitchen, a bowl of cereal in hand.
“Sure, I guess I’ll skip class.” You muttered, a hint of sarcasm in your voice.
“Well, you shouldn’t skip class-”
“It’s not a big deal, I was gonna skip anyway.” You cut him off. You two had always had this tense relationship. He would say something, you’d saying something back, he’d get offended, the usual argument followed suit. You remember his rage when he saw you got a nose piercing, it was fake and so you felt no need not to wear it. It’s your nose after all.
“Oh.” He stood there for a little while, reading over some bills and such.
“So, you’re going out of town...” You thought you’d be the one to bring it up.
“Yep.”
“Somewhere sunny, I’m guessing?”
You furrowed his brows, wondering why you’d say that. “Um, sure, I guess.”
“Why don’t you bring your wife with you? She hasn’t had a vacation in a while.”
“Because it’s work.”
“Or is it because Suzette will be there?” You had stopped washing dishes now.
“Suzette?” His brows knitted further. “How do you know Suzette? I’ve never mentioned her before.” Now he was suspicious.
You sighed, biting your lip anxiously. “You’re making a mistake, ok. You have a wife and kids, your family is worth more than some lady.”
“__, are you hearing yourself? Suzette is a co-worker and we happen to work in the same city this weekend.”
“And you guys plan to do some fucking swimming while you’re there?” You spat, raising your voice a bit through clenched teeth. “Yeah, that sounds like tiresome, boring work.”
He tensed—there is no way you should have heard him, that wasn’t possible
“You need to think before you speak __, you could get yourself in a lot of trouble. How the hell did you even hear that? Did you wire my bag or something? Where are you getting all of this?-”
“Look, I know what I heard.” You stormed away, trying to get away from him but he grabbed your wrist. “What.” You hissed.
“What are you up to, little girl? Do you think this is funny or something? You storm around me like some ungrateful bitch and I put up with it since the day you got here. I won’t be disrespected in my own home.”
“Let go of my arm.” You tried to pull away but he was relentless.
He gripped you harder. “I’m only gonna say this once, stay out of my business __, I mean it.”
The threat only made you spite him more. You felt anger and fear begin to bubble in your chest as he eyed you like a hawk. How dare he even insinuate that you were ridiculous when you saw with your own eyes what he was doing. You stared at him with a blank expression, your knuckles turning white as you clenched your fists impossibly tight. “L-let go.”
“Did you hear what I just-” He paused. A white heat began to incase his entire body, his hands trembled as a high-pitched ringing started to torture his senses, he stepped back. “What the hell?”
You got away and ran upstairs.
“__! I’m not done talking to you young lady-”
“Leave me alone!”
You gritted your teeth, trying to conceal your voice. You closed your door, locking it and jumping to lay on your bed. It was hard not to hate his guts sometimes, he was so annoying sometimes. You wondered what your real dad would have been like...
You heard a knock on the door but you willed yourself to ignore the sounds.
The door creaked as he opened it. “Hi, can I help you?”
“Hello there, I know it’s late but my name is agent Susan Black, I’m with the Scientific Research and Medical Advancements recovery efforts. I’m here to get records for the people living in your home for safety, it’s protocol. We’ve been made aware that you’ve been avoiding our calls and emails for you to turn in all the residents of this home's birth records.” She smiled, he knew this would catch up with him. “You’re making us really suspicious Mr. Kang.”
He scratched the back of his neck thoughtfully. “I’ll make sure that happens in the next week, but now isn’t the best time.”
“Oh, you don’t have to do it now sir, just before the end of the year. Goodnight sir- Oh, and don't forget, it’s for the safety of society.”
“Dr. Kim, what do you think about The 1989 Project, I know you used to work here back then?”
One of the resident doctors stopped by Dr. Kim’s office to hand off some papers. “I know a lot of the rumors are true, and that even you worked with Zoe Akasma Hawn to get her back to health.”
The older man sighed, thinking of the horrible state of that girl. “I don’t have a lot to say about it.”
“Oh, come on Doctor, I know you must think something of it.” He pried.
“I just hope the surviving participants get the help that they need, that’s all.” His answer is wholesome, not one you can really argue.
“You can’t possibly think that those experiments have a chance of molding into society, do you?”
“You never know.” That’s all he had to say before resuming his papers. His phone rang suddenly.
“Hello?”
“Hey dad, I can’t come by this evening, I have a thing.” Taehyung never missed coming to see his dad, so whatever it was, it must be important. “Sorry.”
“This thing must be important, huh?” He smiled through the phone.
“Yeah, I’ll see you. Love you, dad.”
“I love you too, son.”
Taehyung tucked his phone into his pocket and got out of the car, hoping he wouldn’t be waiting here all night. It was sunset, he entered the club and found a seat near the band and waited, anxiously. The tingling in his chest reminded him how nervous he was, what if you decided not to show up? That wouldn’t be a surprise given the feelings you have towards him—if you could call those feelings. When you ran out of the restaurant the other day, he had never felt so out of place in his life. He did put you on the spot when he asked about your family and you did not react well. But in his defense, he didn’t know it was a touchy subject.
“Can I get you anything?” A young waitress, who looked rather swoon by his appearance walked up to him.
“Not now, I’m waiting for someone.” Her expression saddened when she connected the dots. He wasn’t alone this evening and she could forget about hitting it big with a guy like him.
Thirty minutes turned into an hour, and an hour turned into an hour and a half. He had finally settled for ordering tea and leaving, but then you were walking in through the front door—you were wearing a black t-shirt, sneakers, and jeans. Your hair laid close on your shoulders as your eyes scanned the room for him. Before he could beckon you over, your eyes found him and you were walking towards him. With a breathless huff, you sat in the chair across from him, the air around you immediately took effect on him. His chest started to tingle but he managed to push the excitement down.
“So,” You exhaled, “what’s so important?” Your voice was soft, low, kind despite its cutting edges in tone.
“I...” He scrambled for his reasoning for calling you. “I called the office for you yesterday, but they said you weren’t there.”
“I had a few things I had to take care of, is that why you called me here?...” If that was the reason, you were sure he was taking this interest in you too far. “To see why I wasn’t at work? I asked my manager if it was ok-”
“No, that’s not why. I-...” He tapped absentmindedly on his ceramic cup, attempting to compile a coherent sentence. “Um...”
“Taehyung,” You cut him off, your patience running thin. “I really don’t have all night, I walked here from the subway station 15 minutes from here and I need to get back home...”
“The government contacted the company. They’ve been looking to see if any of my employees are affiliated with Jane Sato or know anything about The 1989 Project. I’ve heard that you’re one of the few people that haven’t been officially cleared by the SRMA recently.” He cleared his throat. “Do you know anything about it?”
“No, not a thing...” You deadpanned, eyes going between your hands and the live band in the background. You were starting to get that feeling again, the same feeling you felt the night you saw him, the icy burn at the tip of your fingers, and the pit of your stomach.
“And honestly, I don’t believe in that stuff. The whole Zoe Hawn case seemed like the government had too much to do with it. Put a feral looking failed experiment on the TV and everyone wants to get tested, it’s a hoax. Those hybrids, experiments- Whatever they're called, they have nothing to do with me. I don’t want to have anything to do with them either.”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a folded piece of paper. “So, does this not look familiar to you?” You reached for it, fingers grazing it lightly before you gradually opened it up. A photo—a photo of a bunch of doctors and scientists, you weren’t sure. Your eyes scanned the individuals in the picture and you frowned.
Your gaze turned cold. “Where did you get this...”
“These are the doctors and scientist involved in the 1989 project, I got it from a physician I know. He thought I should show it to some of my employees. Do any of them look familiar?” He tilted his head, doe eyes too round and distracting for you at the moment.
You gulped. “No.”
He moved to grasp the photo. “I just thought you might’ve-...”
“I don’t know who any of those people are.”
A spark ignited from the tip of your fingers.
When your hands touched, it was as if a white light engulfed his vision and an achingly loud thump reverberated in your ears, you yanked your hand away instantly. There was no denying that you felt something and you didn’t like it. He stared up at you, lips parted in shock as you mirrored his expression but in a rigid manner. Your teeth dug into your bottom lip, probably drawing blood, and for the second time around him, your anxiety decided to devour you from the inside out.
“I-...I’m leaving.” You abruptly pushed away from the table and stormed out of the club, photo in hand.
“Hey! Wait!” He ran behind you, trying not to lose you since you were already halfway down the sidewalk. You retained a steady pace of running but you could tell he was hot on your trail, you could run down to the subway and try to lose him there but you hated getting on the subway at this hour.
You swiftly shoved the photo in your pocket and bolted down the alleyway. For a moment, you paused so you could catch your breath, leaning back against the rough brick walls and letting your eyelids flutter closed. Why is this happening to me and why now? You managed to calm yourself from the constant pound of your heartbeat. When you heard panting, you slowly opened your eyes.
He caged you, his eyes boring into your soul.
Your eyes widened, jumping back to run away but he seized your wrists. “Leave me alone!”
“Why did you run?!” He seethed, trying to stay calm. “Calm down, shh!” The words leaving his throat like a suppressed cough. You pushed at his chest, trying not to look him in the eye. “Stop trying to run away! Listen to me, please.” It was a firm plea, one you had never heard from anyone before. “If you’d just let me explain-”
You weren’t having it.
“Why won’t you just leave me alone?!” You jerked away, getting away from the wall so you could make a run for it but you felt a sharp pain in your head. You hunched over, clutching your forehead in your hands. “Ah...” You winced, your breathing unsteady and your stance shaky. The throbbing had increased and your vision was beginning to get blurry.
Taehyung reached out to you, his hand gripping your arms. “Y/n, stop fighting it...”
“Get the hell away from me!-“ You were pulling away, hitting, clawing at his arms and everything to get him to let you go. Despite your resistance, he wrapped his arms around you, his body being so close had made your pulse skyrocket. This was too much, it physically, emotionally, mentally, pained you the more you tried to getaway.
“Please, don’t fight me-” He tried to speak calmly but it was hard when you insisted on thrashing about. “S-stop fighting me, I’m not gonna hurt you, you can trust me,” His heart sank when he saw that look in your eyes, the look of an innocent creature in pain—you were scared. “We’re the same.”
“N-no, leave me alone,” Your stance wavered and you fell silent, tears building at your eyes. You were on the verge of sobbing. “Just leave me alone, I can’t be around you...”
There was so much energy emanating around you, through your bones. You could feel everything—you could hear everything. The buzz of street lights, bickering old couples on the top floor of this old apartment, honking horns of impatient drivers, a sobbing teen curled up on a cold tile floor. It was as if all living things were coursing through you—a razor-sharp current of light and darkness stabbing you from the inside out.
The sound of something cracking, the sound so unbearably familiar that he found it difficult to physically control himself.
“Y/n, don’t fight it...it’s okay...” His hands clung to your lower back and the back of your neck, keeping you anchored against him, your hands still pushing him away. His lips parted, a shaky breath leaving his mouth when you tensed.
“I know...I feel it too.”
Absolute darkness, dull obscurations ravaged your sight and you fell limp—you blacked out.

may i please request a mileven fic where el gets very hurt physically and has to go to the hospital while mike is freaking out and crying (maybe a car crash or she gets shot?) 🌻🌻
“Mike, Mike!”
Mike opens one eye, groans loudly and rolls over. He wants to hibernate for a year until he’s allowed to see Eleven again. He’s been told that isn’t an option but not for lack of trying on his part. He’s still shocked though when Nancy turns on the lamp next to his bed and rips the blankets off of him. He’s outraged too. He’s about to give some kind of excuse when he looks over at the clock.
“It’s four am,” he says.
“No shit, sherlock,” Nancy says rolling her eyes, “Chief Hopper called, he says you have to be downstairs in five minutes or he’s not stopping.”
Mike blinks at her in surprise. If she knows more, Nancy isn’t saying. She just gives him a look and he remembers the five minutes thing. He scrambles to his feet and throws on whatever he can find, shoving sneakers on too. Nancy chucks his coat at him and then drags him past the stairs into her room.
“It’s four am, do you want mom and dad to stop you?”
“Right,” he says rubbing the sleep from his eyes, “I didn’t want to go through the perv portal.”
“I can wake mom and dad if you want,” she offers instead and he shakes his head, trying to touch as little of the window as possible before he gets out.
He’s terrified that he took longer than five minutes, but the moment he’s on the lawn he sees the blazer come. There aren’t any sirens but that doesn’t make him feel better as he runs across the lawn. The car stops just long enough for him to yank open the door and scramble inside. It starts going before he even has it closed. He’s ready for any number of snide remarks from Hopper about his participation but he just glances at the rearview mirror and floors it.
“Mike.”
His name is half a sob as Eleven drags herself over and puts her head in his lap. She’s curled tightly around herself, half wrapped in an old quilt. Her cheeks are wet but she seems to be fighting the tears. She shudders and presses her face into his corduroys. He can feel how hot she is. When he tries to move her, she whimpers and shakes her head, curling tighter around herself. He watches in horror as she bites into her lip and blood trickles down her chin.
“You can let it out, kid,” Hopper says gruffly, “we’re almost there. But you don’t have to hold it in.”
She looks up at him and Mike feels his heart break when he realizes she’s looking for permission. He nods.
“Yeah, let it out,” he says, wrapping his arm around her and finding her hand where it’s gripping her shirt, “you can squeeze my hand as hard as you want.”
She sobs loudly and grips his hand, blindly reaching for the other one which he gives. He winds up half on top of her but that doesn’t seem to matter so long as she can stay curled up. He looks in the mirror at Hopper. The police chief wipes a hand over his face before returning it to the wheel.
“I think it’s her appendix,” he says, then swallows, “I thought it’d be better if you were—“ he trails off so he can turn before Mike sees the big red emergency sign, “we’re here,” he says and puts the car in park. He looks ashen as he turns around, “kid we’re at the hospital, okay? It’s just the hospital, they’re going to help you.”
It takes Mike until they’re entering the doors to realize why he’s here. And why Hopper sets her down instead of carrying her all the way. The moment the hospital smell hits, Eleven gasps loudly and staggers back, shaking her head. Mike is just close enough to stop her and she twists around, trying to look at him. It’s not easy since she’s still doubled over and he immediately lowers himself down.
“I promise it’s okay,” he says, “they’re going to help you.”
“How—“ she begins and he shakes his head.
“Promise,” he repeats.
He’s not sure if it’s the pain that wins out or if she’s listening to him, but she nods anyway and grips his hand as they hobble into the waiting room. Hopper immediately walks up and starts talking to the nurse. There are more people there but Eleven refuses to let go of his hand, even when she goes on the gurney and they head into the back. She looks up at Hopper who smiles reassuringly before she buries her face in the pillow, keeping her death grip on his hand.
Hopper goes out to talk to them as he helps Eleven change into the hospital gown. It’s a testament to how much she’s in pain that she puts it on at all, but they have to stop a few times for her to cry because she hates it so much. When she’s in it, he tucks the blankets around her. He knows they won’t let her keep the quilt, but he fishes in his pocket and finds the hat he stuffed in there and forgot about, tugging it over her head.
“It’s different, see?” he says and she nods.
“Mike I’m scared,” she whispers.
“It’s gonna be okay,” he says, “I got my tonsils out. You just listen to the doctor, they might have you count backwards, and then you wake up in a different room. Hopper will be there. You suck on ice chips and then eventually they bring you to a different room and you go home.”
“Will you be there?” She asks.
“They only let family back there,” he says and feels awful when her expression falls, “if I’m not there I’ll see you really soon.”
“Promise?”
“Yeah, promise,” he says.
They both turn as the curtain opens. Mike was never a huge fan of Dr. Owens but he’s thrilled to see him this time. Mostly because Hopper looks fractionally more relaxed than he was when he left them alone.
“Okay,” he says with a smile, “so, I hear it’s your appendix?” Eleven looks at them both for confirmation and Mike nods, “does this hurt?” He asks, touching her stomach. Eleven gasps and then bites her lip again, “okay we’ll go with yes on that,” he says, “how do we feel about needles?”
“I don’t like them,” Eleven says.
“Me neither,” he agrees and looks at Mike, “what about you? You a fan?”
“No,” Mike says, biting back the urge to say he’s not a fan of watching the people he cares about screaming in hospital beds either, “I can keep holding your hand though.”
Eleven manages to look horrified at the implication he was going to do anything else. Dr. Owens comes over and swabs the inside of her elbow. Mike shifts how he’s holding her hand so they can work, but when she bites her lip again at the band they tie around her bicep he almost wants to stop them. Instead he shifts so that she’s got both her hands on his, reaching up and brushing away her tears. When she goes to bite her lip again, he catches it out with his thumb. She yelps and buries her face in the pillow.
“You can make sounds,” he says, “you don’t have to be scared.”
“It still hurts,” she whispers.
“It’s not gonna hurt for long,” he promises as they draw blood and then hook her up to an IV.
She relaxes fractionally when they take off the band and her hand grabs his again, locking both of their fingers. She’s exhausted and Mike wishes that he could make the pain go away. This just seems unfair, but he battles back his own emotions to try and be brave for her. It’s not long before the doctor comes back but every second she’s in pain is too long in his opinion.
“Okay,” he says, “they gotta come out.”
“Can Mike come?” Eleven asks. Dr. Owens looks doubtful. Mike looks at Eleven’s ashen face and looks back at him.
“You let me stay with Will,” he argues.
“Doc,” Hopper says and Dr. Owens sighs, loudly, like he knows where this is going. Then he shoves a clipboard at Hopper.
“Parental consent,” he says and looks at them both, “he can stay until you fall asleep,” he says pulling things out of cupboards, “put these on. You two can have matching hats.”
He doesn’t think as he goes into the bathroom and changes, barely remembering to grab his clothes when he’s done. There are booties for his shoes and he puts them on, coming back inside to see Eleven in the same position, curled tight in a ball. He comes over and shakes her shoulder, waking her up.
“We gotta put these on,” he says, trying to sound like its normal.
She trades his hat for the cap, picking at it before wrinkling her nose. He realizes that she’s got hair now and it has to be covered.
“See? It’s different,” he says.
“You look like the man on the pasta can,” she says to him.
He walks with them into the operating room and helps her as they put her on the bed. He tries to be as brave as possible, knowing that he’s not supposed to be here. He keeps his hands on hers as they inject something into her IV before laying her back. She looks up at him and he smiles.
“Promise,” he says firmly, hooking their pinkies together.
She nods as they put the mask over her face.
“Okay, count back from 100 for me,” the doctor says.
“Ninety nine, ninety eight, ninety seven—“ she trails off and her eyes close.
Her hand going limp in his feels like a sucker punch. He feels like he can’t breathe. He wants to run away but he can’t move because if he lets go, her hand will just be limp. Carefully he places it next to her, fighting back the urge to tell the doctors that they should leave the blanket on. She might get cold. He stands up as a kind nurse puts a hand on his back and steered him out into the hallway.
He opens his mouth in outrage to tell Jim Hopper he’s out of his mind if he thinks he’s going home, but the police chief just settles the jacket on his shoulders.
“You’re gonna get cold in a minute, kid,” he says.
“I’m not leaving!” He objects before he hears what the man said, “what?”
“Yeah, you’re gonna get cold. Probably in shock, you’re definitely exhausted,” he looks at his watch, “shit,” he mutters, “you got school tomorrow?”
“Today,” he says, “I’m not leaving,” he repeats.
“Fuck,” Hopper says again, “what time does it start?”
“What?”
“School! What time does school start?”
“Eight,” he says.
Hopper looks at his watch again and swears a few more times. Mike wonders if they have a swear jar and thinks they should get one if they don’t want Eleven to spend all her time in detention because she thinks that cursing is allowed. Hopper scrubs his face and then gets up in his. Mike glares right back at him.
“This isn’t routine, okay?” The police chief says, “you don’t cut school, you keep those grades up or you’ll be in a holding cell so fast your head’ll spin. Got it?”
“I’m only cutting school because you came and got me,” Mike points out, knowing he’s developed a reputation that’s kind of unjustified. Hopper gives him a look that makes Mike think he’s about to get arrested right now, “for which I’m really grateful for—“
“I just didn’t want her blowing up the hospital,” Hopper says, “she also wouldn’t agree to come here until I got you.”
Mike goes pink around the ears at that.
“You’re lucky my cuffs are still in the car,” Hopper mutters, steering him into the waiting room.
The surgery is over quickly and Dr. Owens comes out, smiling like it’s an accomplishment. Hopper reacts like it’s one too, jumping to his feet in a way that’s oddly enthusiastic. Mike gets up slower, rubbing his eyes. He’s not worried, not really. Eleven can do anything after all.
“She’s appendix-less but fine,” he says, “they’re taking her into recovery,” he looks at Mike, “we’ll put a chair for you.”
“Thanks,” Mike mumbles.
They go up to recovery. She’s tucked into the bed, flat on her back and oddly still. But she’s not really asleep. He has to remind himself of that. He drags the chair closer and sits in it, finding the best way to rest his head. He thinks maybe he grew since the last time he did this. Which wasn’t long enough ago. He curls up in the chair, close enough to touch her but unwilling to risk making her cold by pulling a hand out of the blankets that are tucked around her.
He falls asleep.
He wakes up twice before she does.
The first is when Hopper puts the quilt on him. For a guy whose only been a dad for a year or so, he’s really freaky good at it. If Mike was any more asleep than he had been, he wouldn’t have woken up. He keeps his eyes closed when he does it, but Hopper mutters another swear word like he knows when someone’s faking.
“Go back to sleep, kid,” he tells him.
The next time he wakes up is when Hopper’s putting El’s blue bracelet back on her wrist. El doesn’t wake up but Mike watches as he carefully slips it on, his fingers curling around her wrist like he can’t quite believe the machine that is beeping out her heart rate. He watches him relax and tuck her wrist back under the blanket.
The next time he wakes up it’s because someone’s looking at him. It’s a feeling that he’s gotten used to over the last year, even without truly understanding it. This time though, it’s different. Sharper. He blinks open his eyes to see Eleven curled on her side watching him intently. Mike pushes his hair out of his eyes and moves, leaning over her.
“Hi,” he says.
“Promise,” she replies and he looks at her curiously, “I didn’t say it back,” she explains, “I knew I couldn’t go if I didn’t.”
He smiles and presses his forehead to hers. She hums and closes her eyes, pressing against his. For once Hopper doesn’t say anything and just lets them have their moment. No-one interrupts them until they pull apart. If his cheeks are wet, that doesn’t really matter. El’s half asleep again.
She’s more awake when they’re settled in her room. With less pain, her discomfort is growing. Even the hat that she quickly takes back and the quilt on her bed isn’t enough to get through that. Hopper keeps having to talk to the Doctor and Mike suspects that he’s trying to get them out of there faster. He looks up hopefully when Hop comes in, but Hopper sighs and shakes his head.
“Tomorrow at the earliest,” he says regretfully, “sorry kid,” he adds and Mike isn’t sure which one he means.
“Mike stays?” She asks and Hopper shakes his head.
“Mike’s gotta go to school, we talked about this,” he explains. Mike opens his mouth and Hopper’s look goes from kind to venomous and back again faster than Mike can keep up with, “this is gonna be hard to keep quiet though, so maybe there’s some wiggle room on that year,” he adds.
Eleven looks at him with a bunch of different emotions. Her hand reaches for Mike and he gives it quickly.
“Is it safe?” She asks.
“Not really,” Hopper admits, “but what happened can’t be helped, so we’ll deal with it,” he says. Eleven looks skeptical, “just remember it’s Jane,” he adds looking at both of them.
“I know,” they both say, before meeting each others eyes and smiling.
“Okay okay just—making sure,” Hopper says, waving a hand, “You’ve gotta go home,” he says to Mike, “I called your sister.”
Mike wants to stay and he stares at Eleven who wants the same thing, wondering why the world doesn’t seem to care about that. She turns away from Hopper, curling on her side and gripping both of Mike’s hands like she can will him to stay. Mike knows he has to explain that if he doesn’t go now they’re not going to be able to see each other for a long time. But he can’t get the words out so he just holds her hands tighter until the smell of Nancy’s perfume hits him.
“Hi,” she says, smiling at Eleven who still has a bit of a hero worship thing when it comes to her. Eleven sits up a little bit and tries to look not afraid.
“Nancy had her appendix out when she was younger,” Mike says and Eleven’s eyes widen.
“Yep,” Nancy says, “do you feel better?”
“Yes,” Eleven says softly.
“Do you not like the hospital?” Eleven shakes her head, “I don’t either. Mike cried for two days when he got his tonsils out until they took him home,” she explains producing a take away bag, “I brought you both real food though. The hospital stuff isn’t good,” she holds out another bag, “and I figured you might need a change of clothes, if you were sick.”
“You brought clothes?” Eleven asks.
“They’re just some old things, I was going to get rid of them anyway so you can keep them.”
Mike looks over as Eleven pokes through the bag, already knowing they definitely aren’t old or things Nancy was going to give away. They aren’t actually Nancy’s clothes at all. Eleven touches the sweater gently and runs her fingers across the seams of a pair of jeans.
“Can I change?” She asks abruptly.
“Not yet,” Hopper says, “but you can put the jacket on,” he adds as her face falls. Eleven pulls out a piece of clothing and wraps it around herself quickly, relaxing fractionally at the feel of clothing against her skin that isn’t the hospital gown, “better?”
“Better,” she confirms and looks at Nancy, “thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Nancy says, “maybe we can go shopping before you start school properly?” Eleven nods. Nancy looks at Mike, “mom and dad will kill both of us,” she says.
“Can I just say goodnight?” He asks, “alone?”
Hopper almost says no but Eleven looks at him pleadingly and he mumbles on his way out. Mike sits on the edge of her bed and holds her hands.
“You can call me,” he says, “anytime. I’ll get to the phone before anyone hears.”
“I feel better,” she says, going for reassuring and Mike nods.
“You’re really brave to stay here,” he says like there’s a choice in the matter, “I have to go to school so I’m there when you come with us.”
Her lip’s been bitten through several times but she still manages to pout. She reaches up for his hat and Mike stops her with a shake of his head. She looks up at him.
“It’s a get-well-soon present,” he says, “you get them for people when they’re sick. Its yours now. Here.” He adjusts the hat so its not pulled down over her ears, but rather turned up so she’s a little less hot. Eleven shifts underneath the blankets, getting marginally more comfortable. The last thing is Mike reaches over and pulls the phone closer, finding a pen and paper. He writes down his number, “here, in case you need to call,” he explains, drawing an arrow, “you just dial left to right.”
“Thank you,” Eleven says.
“I’ll see you when you get home,” Mike says, “promise.”
She looks at him and there’s that familiar stab of the unknown in her gaze. There’s a part of her he’ll never fully understand, but that fact is rarely in the forefront of his head. It is now. She leans forward and presses her lips to the corner of his mouth. Outside he can hear Nancy calling, inside he wants nothing more than to stay there. With her. Eleven settles back into the pillow and squeezes his hand.
“Bye, Mike.”

Steve Van Wormer: Hello, and welcome to, I'm Aware That I'm Rare, the phaware®podcast. I'm your host, Steve Van Dormer, from Phaware Global Association and today we're bringing you the last of Stanford's 20th Annual Race Against PH podcasts that are pointing to this great event taking place virtually November 1st, 2020. Today, we've got a real great pair of guests for you here, Jamie Cruz and his daughter, Diana Cruz, who's a 15-year-old pulmonary hypertension patient. They are from Sacramento, California. Jamie and Diana, welcome!
Diana Cruz: Hi.
Jamie Cruz: Hi.
Steve: So Jamie, tell me a little bit about what led to Diana's diagnosis. When did you know that something just wasn't right with your daughter?
Jamie: When she was little, she would get tired and purple in her face and it was hard for her to breath. At the time, it was happening more and more. One time, she fainted, so we had to take her to emergency room. They didn’t know what caused that, so we come back home. When she relaxed, she would come back to normal. That happened three times. The third time, she got really bad, so that's when we had to do more studies to see what was causing this. Finally, a cardiologist here in Sacramento, contacted Dr. Jeffrey Feinstein in Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital. Dr. Feinstein [along with Dr. Rachel Hopper and Michelle Ogawa, CPNP] started to think about the pulmonary hypertension. That was the problem with Diana. We had to take her to Stanford. They did a lot of studies for almost two months. They finally found that it was high pressure in her lungs, so they start to give her some medication. The first medication she took was Remodulin® (treprostinil) injection. That is what she's on right now. That medication is working really good for her. Basically, she can do normal things like, walk, run, go to school. She’s fine with everything. It's good medication. We are glad that we’ve have that medication for almost 10 years for her. She's fine now. I mean, she's [still takes] the IV medication, but she's fine.
Steve: Diana, what was some of your earliest memories that something was going wrong with you?
Diana: I remember fainting. I feel like that's one of my earliest memories. I don't remember a lot what happened before when I was really young. I just remember in first grade, I would faint and a lot of stuff like that would happen to me. Well, I always knew what I had, because I had this pump on me, so it was kind of obvious, but as I grew older, I knew what was going on. Basically, if it was really hot, I wouldn't go outside, because that would make me faint. So, I took precautions and that made it better too.
Steve: As a young girl in elementary school or even going through middle school. How did you navigate that, all those years?
Diana: In elementary, I used to have a bigger pump, but obviously now it's developed into a smaller one, so it's much better for me. It doesn't really affect me in any negative way. I see it also in a very positive way, because I'm here so that makes it better. But you shouldn't be worried at all. You're going to be fine. It doesn't matter. If you have the pump that I have if you're worried about people teasing you or bullying you or something, you can't even see it. It's pretty small. I've never had problems like that. I just live my life.
Steve: Tell me a little bit about your experience at Stanford at the Race Against PH, which again is happening November 1st, 2020. I'm assuming you've been to more than a few of these races along the way, correct?
Diana: Yes. I've actually only been to one though. I never really knew about them until like two years ago. That race it's great. Especially if you're the one that has pulmonary hypertension. It's fun to go to and you just see everybody supporting.
Steve: Do you and your family have a race team? Is it just you and your father or do you have other friends and family or community members that have raced along with you in the past?
Diana: Oh yeah, for sure. My mom was with me. She's a great person. She was there with me, my cousins and my father, yes. My father was there too. It was good.
Steve: If I'm not mistaken, you had a phone call just about an hour or so ago with all your doctors and nurses there at Stanford. They awarded you with a special honor this year called the Pediatric Courage Award Winner. Can you tell me a little bit about that call?
Diana: It was awesome. My family, was there [on Zoom]. My dad just told me, “Oh, they're just going to talk about your appointment.” I was like, “Oh, okay.” So, I never saw that coming. I never knew that was going to happen. Then, I had family from everywhere who was there. So, that was great seeing them. I’m really honored and grateful that I received that award. I did not see that coming. Yeah, it was pretty great.
Steve: So can you tell anybody that's listening being a Pediatric Courage Award Winner, what brings you the courage to face each day and to do all that you do and in spite of this disease?
Diana: My family, they're amazing and they keeps me going. I stay positive, which really helps, because there's going to be bad days, but there's going to be great days also. I think you should really focus on that, because you shouldn't really focus on all the negatives. My future too, because right now, sure this is happening. Right? But, look forward to your future too. Just focus on that too and have something to look forward to every day.
Steve: How about you Jamie? What traits do you see in your daughter that define her as a courageous fighter in this disease?
Jamie: We always support her, but she really have good attitude. She's positive. She never worries about this disease. She always thinks in a future. She's a great kid. That's why she got that award. When we go to the hospital and they see that she would like to participate in studies that have all the kids that have the same thing, she always says, yes no problem. She's very good with that, too. She helps out with the new cases coming up, with kids like her, because she feels really good. She's really a strong girl, smart. She likes to participate in everything. She’s positive and has a good attitude.
Steve: This year's race, unfortunately with COVID-19 is turning virtual. There's a flip side to that coin. It's a great event as you've said, Diana, in person having attended before. But this year being virtual, it's opened up to people all across the United States and world, frankly. What do you think you would tell people who didn't have much knowledge of pulmonary hypertension or the work of Stanford or this race, for that matter. Why should people participate virtually in The Race Against PH on November 1st?
Diana: To support. It's fun to do and it's supporting, as well. For the people who have PH, I know it makes me happy to know how many people are there and how many people are like, “Oh, we're with you. We know you're going through a lot of stuff and we're support you.” So, that's very important. What's also really good about the race and how it's virtual, there's people from all over the world that can be there too.
Steve: One thing that's really cool leading up to this race, that's a virtual race, as we said. It technically takes place on November 1st, but it's happening now as we speak. What we've been doing throughout the whole month of October, here, is various contests that have been taking place leading up to this race. This week's contest, is actually a costume contest takes place between October 26th and October 30th. Because the race takes place in November, it also correlates with pulmonary hypertension month, as I mentioned. To help generate that awareness, we want to challenge everyone to a costume contest, where you wear the color purple, because as many of you know, purple is a color that's used to show support for pulmonary hypertension. So, be creative and the more purple people are wearing the better. What we want people to do for this week, is to take six photos or selfies of yourself in your favorite pose in your purple costume. You can even make a sign to show your support for pulmonary hypertension patients or The Race Against PH, here at Stanford. Post it on their website by Friday, October 30th. That website is med.stanford.edu/raceagainstph. What's going to happen is there's going to be two adult winners, two children winners. They're each going to receive a $50 gift card. So, please give yourself time to upload this. The deadline is Friday, October 30th, 3:00 PM Pacific. So, please take part in that we'd love to see your costume. Jamie and Diana, I really thank you guys for sharing some of your story. Congratulations on becoming this year's Pediatric Courage Award Winner, that's amazing!
Diana: Thank you.
Jaime: Thanks a lot.
Steve: Thank you all for listening and we hope to see you on November 1st for The Race Against PH. Thanks so much everybody.

Caffeine Challenge #6
Whoo, good job everyone! That was a fun challenge :) You can read all past challenges and today’s HERE on this doc! It also has other’s who participated.
Here’s also mine below!
[END TIME lol I actually finished a contained short story for once!]
You sign the contract in crayon and pray that you haven’t already made a mess of things. The demon in front of you doesn’t see anything amiss, doesn’t question your choice of writing implements, doesn’t do anything but what she’s been doing for the past hour; smiling.
“There we go,” she coos and pets your hair like a mother would. “Easy, easy and so much time life, darling. You made a good deal.”
“...Thanks,” you say, trying not to lean into her touch. It’s been weeks since anyone but a nurse has touched you, even longer since anyone has touched you with something approaching the amount of affection this demon is showing you.
It’s a lie, you think, staring down at your hands. They’re thin and brushed with purple and blue, your skin nearly translucent under the weight of your medications. Your fingers knot in your flimsy hospital gown.
“Take care, kid,” the demon says and brings the contract to her lips. She kisses the crackling paper and smiles wickedly at you. “I’ll be seeing you soon enough.”
She disappears in smoke and fire, a vortex of light and sound in the sterile hospital room that sends all the machines hooked up to you shrieking. She takes with her the sense of peace she’d brought, probably something artificial too.
You sigh and begin to pull the IVs and patches from your body.
“Stop!” Nurse Blanchett rushes into your room, eyes wide. She’s wearing pastel pink scrubs today, the brightest color in the hospital. She grabs your wrist as you go for the heart monitor, pinning it to your side. “Lavina, you can’t pull the--”
She breaks off as, slowly, you lift your arms, forcing hers up. You’re strong, so much stronger than her, and she loses the concern in her eyes to fear.
“I’m checking out,” you say and she lets go, stepping back from you. You swing your legs over the side of the bed, your bare feet still thin, still sickly, but filled with so much strength that your knees don’t buckle when you stand. “Goodbye, Nurse Blanchett.”
You don’t have any normal clothes at the hospital, but that’s fine. You need to go shopping before your final destination anyway.
-------------------------------------------
You go to the department store in the mall down the road, thankful for urban centers for once in your life. It means that you don’t have to figure out the bus in a hospital gown.
You go to the dressing room with an armful clothes and come out wearing a t-shirt, jeans, a jacket, socks, underwear and shoes. The price tags are in your hand as you go up to the register and you drop them on the counter.
“Uh,” the cashier says, looking from the tags to what you’re wearing. “Would you like me to take the security tags off for you?”
You drop the security tags onto the counter. They’re twisted and broken, flimsy in the face of your strength.
The boy stares at the security tags and exhales slowly. “Okaaaaay.” He rings up your clothes, seemingly determined not to ask any more questions. “Your total is $212.56.”
You reach into your new jeans’ pocket and encounter a thin plastic card. You hand it over without looking. The devil had kept her deal and you have what you need.
The card goes through and the cashier seems to relax when you leave the store.
Outside, you stop on the sidewalk. The sun is bright overhead and the rays are so warm on your face. You find your eyes closing, find yourself enjoying this warmth, the fresh air, everything. Even your clothes feel good. The past few months any seam or zipper had seemed to tear your skin, rip you apart, but no longer.
You open your eyes and start walking.
The shops and stores give way to suburban neighborhoods, deserted due to the school year and weekday, empty driveways lining your path. Your legs never get tired and your feet don’t hurt, even in new shoes that might once have chafed. A dog races up to a fence you’re passing, tail wagging and ears alert. The breeze shifts, bringing it your scent, and the animal backs up, ears flat, whine escaping from its throat.
You keep walking.
The suburban houses begin to shrink, two stories becoming one, walls getting closer and closer together. You cross a concrete bridge, the river underneath it dry, and the houses become even smaller, two bedroom, one bath, no yard only a small front porch.
It’s in front of one of these that you finally end your journey.
Otto hasn’t changed much. The paint (“I’ll get to it!”) is still peeling, dropping yellow strips onto the dry lawn (“Yes, I watered today, stop nagging.”). The front door is hanging crooked, the bottom edge pulled away from the jam so the breeze finds its way inside (“I prefer it cold anyway. Just put on a jacket.”)
You take care walking up the steps, aware that he probably hasn’t fixed those either. On the second step you see a hole and you grit your teeth. You hope it was Otto’s foot that punched through, you hope he was the one who had to pull splinters from his calf, you hope he was the one who got hurt.
You know, from the size, that that’s not the case.
You don’t knock on the door. You pull back the screen and go inside, letting it slam behind you. “Cleve? You home?”
There’s the sound of tiny feet running from the kitchen. Cleve likes to sit between the counter and the fridge, cool metal pressed into one side and wood on the other. Your heart constricts. Cleve only sits there when something’s wrong.
Your son, your pride and joy, bursts around the corner, curly hair matted on one side and face too grimy to have been recently washed. He’s wearing one of your old shirts, some ugly thing you got in Florida ten years ago, and no pants. There are fresh bruises marching up his legs and the telltale scrape from his little foot going through the wooden steps outside. You tamp down on your anger and guilt, unwilling to let him see them and open your arms.
“Hi, honey,” you say when he stands there, across the room, uncertain. “Mom’s home!”
Cleve recognizes your voice even if he’s unsure of the gaunt, hungry thing your face has turned into. He launches himself into your arms, five-year-old body still small enough to be completely encompassed. “Mom!” he shouts and then bursts into tears.
You let him cry, choking on tears of your own. You didn’t know if you’d ever see your little boy again, too weak to leave the hospital, too stupid to have married a man that would bring your son to visit you. His hands ball in the back of your new shirt and you drag him into your lap, sitting on the floor, and rock him, murmuring comforting words into his ear.
After what might be a literal hour, you pull back. Your little boy’s face is streaked with tears and snot, just like yours. You laugh and brush under his eyes, drying them with your hands. “We’re messy.”
Cleve pushes forward again and buries his face in your shoulder, nonverbal. You pat his back comfortingly and take him with you when you stand, the movement easier with a devil deal in your spine.
He starts talking again in the bath, telling you about the neighbor kids and kindergarten which he just started.
“But sometimes I don’t go ‘cause I can’t find it,” Cleve tells her. He splashes the water and laughs when it gets her. “So I have to stay home until Daddy comes back.”
“Well,” you say when you’re sure your voice won’t tremble with rage, “I’ll take you from now on. Then maybe when you’re bigger you can try by yourself again.”
“You’re going to take me to school?” Cleve asks. He seems awed by the concept. “I have to show you--”
You listen to him tell you all about what he wants to show you, heart stinging. He’s so big now. He’s like his own person, no longer the little boy who held onto your leg. He’s got ideas and experiences and you missed him growing up.
The fury in your chest is going to make what you have to do next a lot easier.
----------------------------------------
Otto comes home long after you put Cleve down for bed. You’re sitting on the old couch in the living room, watching the door with a beer in your hand. You hear the old van pull up, hear the exhaust cough, hear Otto stumble out cursing. You can tell by the cursing that he’s not drunk, just tipsy, and he’s probably lost money on whatever gambling he’d been up to this afternoon.
His heavy footsteps skip over the broken stair, step, step, step to the door. He doesn’t even reach for his keys, meaning he’d left the door unlocked on purpose with their five-year-old in the house.
You don’t hide the rage this time, let him see it on you as soon as he steps inside.
He’s a big man, like his father, and balding, like his father. He compensates with facial hair that’s a little too thick for your tastes, but he’s hardly given a damn about those in a long time. His dark eyes lock on your blue ones and he freezes.
“Lavina,” he says and licks his lips. “The hospital--”
“--released me,” you say and stand, holding your arms out. “Don’t I look better.”
You don’t and you know it. When you made your deal, you didn’t make it for vanity. You’re stick thin and emaciated, skin so thin you can see through it, hair completely gone from the treatments that didn’t work.
“It was too expensive,” Otto blurts out instead of answering. He’s covering his guilt with anger like usual. Like always. “Those treatments drove us into the ground, Lavina, and the gas to the hospital was too much.”
“And the phone?” you ask. You drop your arms. “Of course, that was too much too. Couldn’t even call.”
Otto’s chin jerks up. “I didn’t want Cleve to see you like that. It’s selfish of you to make him see this.” He gestures to your body. “I made the right call.”
“So did I,” you say. You step around the chipped coffee table and bare your teeth. “You think this is taking care of Cleve, Otto? You’re a failure as a father, just like I knew you would be.”
He flinches and that drives his rage all the more. “Better than a dying, slut of a mother! You think I don’t know how you got sick? You think I don’t know you--”
“You’re a failure,” you say loudly. You don’t care what he thinks he knows. “So I made a deal. The sort you make at night, alone, when you don’t have another choice.” You put one hand behind your back. “You gave me no choice.”
You show Otto the knife from your waistband.
“What are you doing with that?” Otto asks. He takes a step back. “Lavina, I didn’t mean it, I--”
“You see,” you say calmly, “normal deals are pretty limited. Live for another ten years or get revenge and go now. I needed something else, something with a little kick to get what I needed.”
“You said deal,” Otto says, one step behind. Like usual. “A--Lavina you didn’t. Lavina.”
“Otto,” you mock and take a step forward. “Two souls. One person doesn’t have two souls, Otto. But you know what does? Two people.”
“You can’t kill me for a deal you made,” Otto says and hits the door. He seems surprised to find that he was backing up and holds his hands up to ward you off. “Lavina--”
You show him your ring. “‘Til death do us part, Otto. What’s mine is yours.” Your face darkens. “I always knew you’d go first.”
You lunge.

6 Behavior Your World Changes When You Begrudgingly Participate Your 30 s
Do you remember “the good old days? ”
Itwas the time in life when everyone was carefree and nothing genuinely mattered.
But, going older going to happen to all of us , no matter how hard we try to avoid it.
Like a rite of passage we didnt inevitably sign up for, that crucial transition from a 20 -something to a 30 -something sometimes experiences more like a punch in the gut.
You exit from having akiller social living and an incredible metabolism to working for the man.
For many parties, life changes drastically. Butas a 30 -something, the most important thing I’ve learned is to jest at yourself.
Here got a few merriments you can look forward to TAGEND
1. Coffee Habits
20 s : The 20 s form of “I involve coffee” is cute, really.
“Gosh, Im so sleepy, and its precisely past lunch. I envisage I want a Starbucks.”
I liked to change it up by lending flavors, sweeteners and creams.
It wasnt a requirement.
I debated coffee a 4 pm consider to top off the working day. Aint that dessert?
30 s : Once the morning pierces you in the face, its like an IV bag of coffee is needed.
Its not a fun little treat anymore.
Those mornings I dont have coffee, Im urgently researching my lockers for exactly one little K-cup.
Maybe one rolled away, or perhaps I still have that crappy starter chest with all the various collections I never craved in the first place.
I still enjoys swapping up creamers formerly in a while, but that’s too precisely childs play.
Ill take it strong and pitch-black if I have to.
Mmm, coffee.
2. Gym Routines
20 s : Lets face it: We went to the gym in our cutest, tightest breathes, and we had ulterior motives.
What a great neighbourhood to look for dudes.
I mean, if he was into fitness, he just had to be a good catch, right?
Which guy with broad shoulders and a good sweat croaking wouldnt be the soulfully smart human of my daydreams?
So, we satisfied our gal chums at 8 pm and cultivated real hard on that StairMaster.
Never mind the sidelong gazes across the chamber to the free weights area.
30 s : Gym? Who the hell has time to go to the gym?
I eventually acquired a treadmill last year, just so I can run on the hamster rotation at home.
I walk in from work at 5 pm, and I have absolutely no desire to interact with any more members of the free world-wide for the day.
Convenience trumps cute outfits.
Through the trial and error of our younger days, we figure out not all gym rats can recite Shakespeare or hamper a conversation.
So, I run at home or pop in a residence video.
You mean theres a 25 -minute video in existence thats going to give me the same bod I used to work three hours on? Sold.
Minutes eventually, Im wiping the liquid awesome off the flooring and high-fiving Shaun T. through my TV.
Not merely did he kick my ass, but Ive likewise got dinner done in the crockpot in the next room.
Deuces.
3. Hangovers
20 s : They were a button of reputation, remember?
You trod in to a Friday morning lecture with a pellet detonator and sunglasses on.
At least one sidekick would high-five you on the way to your seat.
You hadanother amazing Thirsty Thursday, and “youve been” didnt was of the view that bad.
You simply had aslight headache and were a little thirsty.
It was all totally worth it because you rocked it with your gal cronies until 2 am.
30 s : Hangovers become a scarlet letter.
How flipping embarrassing. What the heck just happened?
Why do I feel like a instruct has run over my face?
Im nauseated, my leader is pounding and its will be taken three days to recover.
Never again.
4. Skin Care
20 s : Some of us pondered browning was a good idea.
The darker the sunburn, the thinner the thighs, right?
We all imbibe that Kool-Aid at some quality, and we thump the ultraviolet rays one too many times.
“I only necessitate a bit pre-tan so I dont burn on spring breach. It saves my scalp from breaking out! ”
30 s : Im wondering why no one told me I looked like a Dorito with super white teeth back then.
Not to mention, why did no one inform me about all the harmful effects?
I dont tan anymore for lots of reasons. But genuinely, shouldnt cancer be enough of one?
Not simply do I not tan, but I also invest a small luck on skincare to change those super breathtaking signals of aging.
We lead from being 22 and buying monthly copper goddess containers to being 33 and spending a weeks compensate on top-of-the-line knockout commodities that claim to manufacture me gaze 10 years younger, minus the tan.
Oh, the irony.
5. 9 pm
20 s : This was the witching hour.
Meet your girlfriends for dinner, load up on something carby to disprove the consequences of too much alcohol and then, party.
30 s : Carbs are now the demon. I get excited for 9:00 p.m. for a different reason.
The house is quiet. I can put on my ugliest, blurry throbs and hit the sack.
Huzzah. Its like triumphing the 30 -something gamble every night.
6. Friends
20 s : You had tons of them. There were 500 people in your cell phone contacts, and they were all good beings youd fill for lunch or a movie any time.
You ascertained them a lot, very. Everybody hung out at the same haunts.
You ate together in the commons between categorizes. You were filling new people all the time.
The more the merrier was your motto.
30 s : Who has time to make friends? Unless theyre longtime BFFs, the only new people you fulfill are at work.
Youre down to three, and they all have monikers that pop up on your contacts roll that are related to some inside joke.
It’s tone versus quantity.
Nowadays, free time is the most important chassis of currency you possess.
You dont want to waste it on people who arent “your people.
Adulting is hard.
We eventually have to come to words with the fact every decade ends.
Every bit of fun “youve had” in your 20 s will shortly has become a memory.
More importantly, though, when the battle cry sounds and you are forced to cross the picket line into that third decade, recollect to take all of your crazy, fun-loving identity with you.
Everything we do in this life is a choice.
We can either choose to laugh at ourselves and be happy, or we can choose to take everything too seriously.
I choose to enjoy the now and to look back on the good times with a smirk and an eyebrow raise.
Would you do it all over again?
Hell yes, you would.

Tao Of The 2017 Buyer (Part IV)
TorontoRealtyBlog
Through the first three parts of this series, you’ve undoubtedly witnessed the Toronto real estate market change as we went from a red-hot spring, through a transitionary April, into a slower May and June, and finally into a tepid July.
Only one of my buyer clients could say they experienced the entire market cycle, and as is the case with many markets, they were the beneficiary of some good luck by the end.
Allow me to present to you the conclusion of one of the most interesting property searches I’ve ever had the pleasure of working on…
As I alluded to in the first chapter of this story, the idea for this post came to me when a client recently asked me, “How many offers does the average buyer make before they’re successful?”
I can provide an average, but it doesn’t represent much for one set of buyers versus the next.
Every buyer is different, and some are destined to be successful on the very first try, whereas others would be a good bet to lose multiple times before winning.
In my 2014 edition of “Tao,” the story of my couple who lost seven times before they won had some real close calls and heart-breakers. It was more bad luck than anything else.
As you’re reading in the 2017 edition, the nine-offer journey with this particular couple had more to do with a changing market, circumstance, and an unemotional approach to buying, the latter of which is something every one of you reading will suggest you’re capable of, but in practice, very few are.
When last we spoke, Jake & Amanda had gone almost a full month without finding a house on which they wanted to submit a bid. This represented a complete one-hundred-eighty-degree turnaround from the previous 45 days, when we had submitted 7 offers.
On a Sunday afternoon, we saw two houses: a detached on Bowmore Road in the Upper Beaches, and a detached just past the boundary of Toronto & Scarborough.
The houses were similar if only for being detached, otherwise, they couldn’t have been more different.
The house on Bowmore was in great shape structurally and mechanically, and had stood the test of time. But it was a bit tired, and the lack of parking, while not an issue for my clients who didn’t have a car, was tough to swallow at the $950,000 asking price.
The house in Scarborough was essentially a 3-year-old house; a complete gut-renovation, with a huge footprint, and more square footage than we’d seen in any house, save for perhaps the one semi-detached in Keelsdale. Listed at $849,000, it had been on the market for about five weeks.
Bowmore had come onto the market in mid-July, after a period dominated by sellers listing artificially-low to try and get multiple offers, but who would most certainly end up re-listing higher after their Plan-A failed. I wrote a lot about this on my blog last summer, and I blamed the sellers and listing agents equally, as the sellers didn’t want to face the reality of a changing market, and the listing agents didn’t actually know what any house was worth.
The $950,000 listing price represented the new trend in the market, where you’d come out at, or above, fair market value.
It was a welcome change for buyers who were worn-out from the spring, or for just about any market participants who simply tired of the “game” of pricing.
The house had been on the market for two weeks by the time we’d seen it, and my clients liked it.
But they also liked the detached, 3-bed, 3-bath, 24 x 110 foot lot in Scarborough as well.
The Scarborough house, if you can believe this, was originally listed for a whopping $1,097,000, which was just so insane, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. A series of price-drops left the house sitting at $849,000, but with the price so high to begin with, plus zero marketing effort whatsoever, the market just hadn’t responded, and the house continued to sit.
My clients realized they were in an enviable position, and one that no buyer in the spring market had been in: they had choice, and time.
Choice AND time.
Consider that one of those, on its own, is significant.
But both? Together? It was unheard of in the freehold market.
Now, throw in price flexibility, and you’re just laughing.
What a market we found ourselves in.
My clients decided that they wanted to “try their hand” at the Bowmore house, and just the idea of “trying one’s hand” was incredible, since it wasn’t something you did in the spring.
In the spring, if a house was listed at $799,900, and there were twelve offers, it just didn’t make any sense to “try your hand” with an $825,000 offer, when the house was going to sell for $1,100,000, or more.
But now we were looking at a completely different situation.
We put together an offer for $900,000 even, and submitted it with the caveat that we were “almost” firm on price.
Why almost firm?
As emotions run high when selling one’s home, many sellers don’t like to feel strong-armed, or like they’re losing a battle. We could have offered $910,000 as a “take it or leave it,” but rather we submitted an offer for $50,000 under asking, for a house that had been on the market 14 days (an eternity in this area), and suggested that this represented just about our best price.
It was now up to the sellers to decide what their price was.
Because if it was $940,000, there was no deal to be had. $930,000, same story. $920,000, and perhaps they might think we’d play ball, but they might not want to risk losing us.
We had expected a sign-back to arrive the next afternoon, but the listing agent called me and said they had received another offer.
The market was cooling, but that didn’t mean we were in a buyer’s market. There was always the threat of a competing offer, and once one came in, the seller could sit back and ask both of us to submit our “best” offer.
Instead, we did something that buyers so seldom do in this market: we walked away.
Our best price was $910,000, and who knows – maybe if we received an actual sign-back at $914,850, sitting in front of us, we’d have accepted it.
But with the prospect of a competing offer, and knowing we were $50,000 under the list price, Jake and Amanda simply said, “Shall we switch our focus to the Scarborough house?”
Bowmore sold three days later for $923,000.
But by the time Bowmore had sold, Jake and Amanda had already bought a house of their own…
Listed for $849,000, we had all the leverage here. This house, which was listed by a relative of the sellers, was on its fourth listing now – this one for 33 days.
We submitted an offer for $825,000, and gave them a “take it or leave it,” but of course, I wouldn’t phrase it like that.
And perhaps the most interesting term of the offer was that it was conditional on a home inspection – something we didn’t see in the spring, when every house had a pre-inspection, and the buyers had to either rely on that inspection, or conduct their own, before “offer night” when a dozen unconditional offers would materialize.
We tied up the house for $825,000, conditional, amid a lot of groveling from the other side, but no real action.
I don’t blame the listing agent for acquiescing. He simply had no leg to stand on. You can’t bargain without any chips.
We used my preferred inspector from Carson Dunlop, somebody I’ve used probably a hundred times, and he gave the house rave reviews. My clients are extremely intelligent, and far more informed about the inner workings of a home than most buyers, and they hit it off with my inspector as we went through the house. The inspection revealed a few things to “keep an eye on,” but more importantly, it identified how well-done some of the renovations were.
We signed the waiver of our condition, and voila – we had bought a house!
Anticlimactic? Maybe a little, based on how I allowed the end of the story to unfold.
But that’s the point with this particular real estate journey: despite the nine-offer process, there were never any tears, and a fraction of the emotion you might otherwise expect.
Now, the story isn’t over quite yet.
Jake and Amanda had purchased a home, but the next order of business was selling their condo.
A funny thing happened this past summer, which has since been documented: while the freehold market, which has traditionally outpaced the condo market in virtually every arena, started to slow, the condo market just kept on going.
Jake and Amanda owned a small, 1-bed, 1-bath condo, about 539 square feet.
We were working off two sales in the building, both 568 square foot models, which sold for $425,000 and $418,000 respectively back in the spring.
Based on the price per square foot of the latter sale, Jake and Amanda’s unit would be worth $396,704.
The problem, of course was that the comparable sales were from the spring, and that represented the peak of the market.
Those two units also faced south, were higher up, and had better views.
As a result, I felt Jake and Amanda’s condo was “worth” around $380,000.
But as we know, a property is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, not what comparable sales suggest.
I told Jake and Amanda that we should price the unit at $399,900, and that anybody who walks through the door in the first 48 hours and likes it would probably end up submitting an offer for near the asking price, regardless of the comparable sales.
I don’t believe that today’s buyer agents, many young, many inexperienced, many poor “A.F.” as the kids say, have any clue what any condo is worth. As a result, I often price my listings higher than they’re worth, because I know some rookie buyer-agent who needs a paycheque is going to do the “selling” for me.
But as it would turn out with Jake and Amanda’s condo, we didn’t need an inexperienced, rookie agent to sell the unit, since the market sold the unit for us…
On the second day of the listing, an agent (yes, a young, inexperienced guy) registered an offer, and called me to discuss. I naively assumed it would be at the list price, and also naively assumed it would be irrevocable until 11:59pm that night.
I was wrong on both accounts.
Not only was the offer for $389,000, which was $10K under list, but it was also irrevocable until 6pm the next day, meaning I had time to sit and wait, and let other agents know we had an offer.
I asked him, “Why in the world are you coming in under the list price?” and he told me, “We’re here to negotiate.”
Rookie mistake.
Had he submitted a full-price, $399,900 offer, with a midnight irrevocable, and had I worked the phones to draw up other interest, and come up empty, we’d have accepted that offer.
But instead, he submitted an offer under the asking price, and tried to sell it to us with an extended irrevocable as if to say, “Take your time, sleep on it, we’ll be here tomorrow.”
Of course, the next day, two more offers were registered, and this guy had cost his client a property.
The higher of the two offers was $425,000, unconditional, whereas the other two offers both had conditions.
Jake and Amanda were over the moon, and for good reason.
They had hoped to get $385,000 – $390,000 for the unit, and here we were, with three offers, and $25,000 over asking in a “cooling market.”
And that agent – the first one who submitted an offer, now had a buyer who saw she could have got a unit that sold for $425,000, for $399,900, if they had simply played the game correctly.
The sale set a new record for price per square foot in the building, and it confused the hell out of me about the market!
How in the world could the freehold market be cooling, but the condo market was still red-hot?
Entry-level-condos, that’s how. There’s not a lot out there at $399,900, and this unit looked A+, as I always stage and market the hell out of my listings. It was probably the nicest-looking 1-bedroom on the east side at that time, and a lot of buyers out there have already made their minds up by the time they browse through those twenty MLS photos.
By the end of Jake and Amanda’s real estate journey, they had likely purchased the best house out of the nine on which they had submitted offers, and they had sold their condo for a lot more than they’d expected.
They got every feature in a house that they wanted, and then some – the master ensuite bathroom was unexpected, as was the full 800 sqft basement with a rec-room, 4th bedroom, and bathroom. They got parking, which half the other houses didn’t have, and the house was detached, which again, half the other houses were not.
It’s funny how these stories turn out sometimes. You would think some folks in their position would eventually “settle,” or not find anything, or end up with an inferior home. But for Jake and Amanda, the ninth time really was the charm. Really, and truly. Perhaps the semi in Keelsdale was larger; maybe it’s a tie, who knows.
But they sure didn’t feel the same way about that house as the one they ended up with, and being able to take their time, play one house off the next, submit an offer well under list, refuse to negotiate on the price, and conduct a home inspection, put the proverbial icing on the cake.
So ends their journey, and every day in my line of work, another begins.
The TREB numbers are coming out this week, and I’m sure we’ll have lots to discuss on Wednesday and beyond…
