In this week’s Once Upon a Time, we get some of Princess Tiana’s backstory; meanwhile, in Hyperion Heights, more is revealed about Detective Rogers’ missing girl and the Henry/Roni relationship. Full recap of “Greenbacks” (first aired Friday, November 3 at 8pm ET|PT on ABC).

“Greenbacks” picks up in the Fairy Tale realm several years before the events that bring Henry and Cinderella together. This time we get Princess Tiana’s backstory. Her father has just died, and she and her mother are no longer able to afford their upkeep. They decide to host an auction to sell off some of their things. Tiana feels that this is humiliating… of course Drizella shows up to get her digs in, too. While looking around, Drizella comes upon something that Tiana claims shouldn’t be for sale: the award for heroism that her father won during the war. Tiana’s becomes even more frustrated, but her mother tells her that they don’t have a choice. If they don’t earn enough money at the auction, they might have to sell the castle to afford the King’s taxes. If only Tiana could find a prince to marry… she promises to start looking for such a hero to save them.
That night, Tiana travels to the bayou looking for the travelling soothsayer. She asks a local for directions, but it doesn’t go as planned. Before long, a group of people have gathered around her begging for help and to save them (but don’t they know that Tiana needs help herself?!). Someone intervenes before Tiana is accosted, and it’s the soothsayer she’s been looking for, Dr. Facilier. Facilier leads her into his lair and tells her right away that her prince will soon come. Tiana asks how he knows what she’s come for, and he says he has friends on the other side that share information with him. Facilier pour bones from a bowl, using them to divine Tiana’s story about losing her father and the king predating on the kingdom. Facilier promises to help Tiana find the prince who will save her and the kingdom. She will find her prince that night by following the red crow. And Facilier says he wants no price, only her smile.

That night, Tiana finds a red crow, the Crimson Crow is a pub. She goes inside and is approached by a man who tries to steal her earrings. But a dashing man intervenes to defend her, Prince Marias. Tiana’s prince has come! Marias invites Tiana to dinner and they eventually make their way back to the castle. Marias notices Tiana’s father’s award, the firefly ruby. She tells him about how her father enlisted in the army as a cook, but when the opportunity can to prove himself, he picked up a sword to defend his kingdom. Tiana laments the potential loss of her father’s legacy, but Marias promises that won’t be the case. As he’s about to take his leave, Tiana notices that her father’s ruby is missing, and Marias took it! She’s able to stop him (like the badass she is) and he confesses that he isn’t a prince and the whole plan is Facilier’s. Facilier is holding Marias’ true love hostage, and in exchange for Marias stealing the ruby, Facilier would let her go. Tiana kicks Marias out (without the ruby).

Tiana reflects on the evening and realizes she’s been self-centered. Is there anyway to help the people in her kingdom who need help? Tiana doesn’t want to look the other way anymore. Tiana’s mother encourages Tiana to believe in herself as her father’s legacy. They don’t need a prince to save them.

Tiana returns to Facilier’s lair as he’s putting together a voodoo doll. She hands over her father’s ruby and demands that Marias’ love (a frog) be released. Apparently, this ruby has transformative powers that will set Facilier free. He plans to keep the frog anyway, but Tiana draws a sword and refuses to leave without the frog. Facilier stabs the voodoo doll, which incapacitates Tiana. She fights it off and is able to knock the doll off the table, which dilodges the knife and distracts Facilier. She’s able to grab the cage holding the frog. Facilier takes the ruby and disappears.
Tiana returns the frog to Marias and apologizes. Besides, she can be a hero herself. Tiana knows exactly how to make things better for her people, and the prince’s upcoming ball is a good starting point. She asks is Marias and his love would join her… but when he delivers true love’s kiss, he turns into a frog too! They are reunited and Tiana watches as they hop off to their HEA.
In Hyperion Heights Victoria returns to the she’s keeping a witch hostage. This time, Victoria brings a gift for her, a full tea service, meant to be a peace offering. However, the witch is skeptical of this visit. She asks Victoria about the difficulty of undermining Lucy’s belief. It seems that, unless Lucy forfeits her belief, Victoria will never see Anastasia again. (Hmmmm, that’s curious.) Victoria acknowledges this and asks for help. The witch offers some advice, that belief is something that grows wide and deep and Victoria’s only option is to uproot it. When Victoria offers the tea, the witch becomes agitated. Apparently, this isn’t the tea she prefers, her special brew. But Victoria will only bring her the tea after she helps to uproot Lucy’s belief.
Meanwhile, Lucy is waiting for Victoria and Belfrey Developments. As usual, Ivy couldn’t be bothered, even though Lucy is about to miss her ballet lessons. Sabine (we finally learn that this is Tiana’s Hyperion Heights name!) arrives to bring Lucy one of her beignets. Victoria arrives and brings so much shade with her. She orders Ivy to go to the herbalist for a few items. Then afterwards, Victoria tells Sabine that she has decided to increase the rent on the apartment she shares with Jacinda by 8%. Sabine and Jacinda can’t afford that, but no worries because Sabine is prepared to push back.
Sabine meets Jacinda at Mr. Cluck’s to tell her about the rent hike. But Sabine sees this as an opportunity. She’s taken all of the money from their rent jar to buy supplies so they can mass produce her beignets. Sabine wants to set up a pop-up restaurant out of Mr. Cluck’s while Jacinda’s boss is away. They’ll be able to make enough money to pay their rent plus more. At first Jacinda is unwilling to take the risk. Sabine encourages her that this is the time to do something big to change the game and make Lucy proud. Eventually, Jacinda does agree.

Henry and Detective Rogers meet at Roni’s. Rogers has the files he’s amassed over the years about the cold case of the missing girl. Since he doesn’t trust Weaver and his other colleagues, Roni will keep the files for Rogers. However, he keeps the girl’s journal with him. Roni suggests that maybe Rogers needs to get a hobby? After Rogers leaves, Roni turns her attention to Henry. She’s concerned that he was hanging out with Ivy and getting drinks. Ivy isn’t any better than her mother. Henry speaks up for Ivy, saying that she might surprise them by standing up to Victoria.
Rogers arrives at the precinct to help a fellow officer handcuff a suspect who is getting violent. In the process, Rogers notices a tattoo on the perp’s wrist, a series of forks intercepting. He recognizes that tattoo as a drawing from his missing girl’s journal. Later, Rogers confronts the man to ask about the tattoo and the girl, Eloise Gardner. The guy says he got the tattoo when he was in jail (his cellmate told him it’s to ward off evil). Since the person the guy assaulted doesn’t plan of pressing charges, he’ll the released from jail. However, the guy issues a warning. Apparently that design is of a powerful rune… so if Eloise was drawing it, that means big trouble.
When Ivy returns with those herbs, Victoria takes them and leaves immediately. Ivy asks where her mother is going, but gets no answer, only an admonishment to shut up and do her job. Instead Ivy watches her mother through the security video and sees her take the elevator to a strange floor in the building. She then calls Henry and tells him to get in touch with her for “dirt” on her mother.
Henry shares with Roni the information that Victoria has been spending time in a secret room in her building. Roni doesn’t believe it though. How can Henry be falling for Ivy? Jacinda would be a much better option, anyway. Henry tells Roni to back off because she isn’t his mother. When Henry leaves for the bathroom, a text from Ivy comes in telling Henry to meet her at the Belfrey building lobby. Roni responds that “I’m on my way” and then deletes the conversation.

Roni meets Ivy instead and tells her to stay away from Henry. Ivy is probably just using this to stick it to Jacinda, who likes Henry too. If Ivy is so interested in standing up to her mother then she should prove it. Ivy takes Roni to the secret room and they see the herbal tea Victoria brought up, but nothing/no one else is there. Roni looks around the room and sees that there are a couple safes. She opens one and finds a photograph…
Sabine is a beignet making machine and a crowd really turns out. Lucy joins them at the restaurant (after fibbing to Victoria about ballet practice going over time). Lucy plans to help her mother and Sabine by stamping a firefly onto the bags for the beignets. Sabine used to tell her a story about how when she was young, she was so poor, she didn’t have stars to wish on, so she’d wish of fireflies. It’s a fitting logo for so many reasons! (Ray and Evangeline, anyone?! 🙂 ) Jacinda and Sabine start planning to even open a food truck! But good things don’t always last, especially when Victoria is involved. Victoria tries one of Sabine’s beignets and decides to sabotage their pop-up. She calls one of her henchmen (literally Wreck-it Ralph) to do the deed.
Ralph starts a fire in the kitchen that burns down the restaurant. No one is hurt, but Jacinda is in a really tough spot. What’s her Mr. Cluck’s boss going to say? Jacinda has surely lost her job, what can she do now? Lucy tries to intervene, but Jacinda isn’t having it. Sabine promises to move out of their apartment and gives Jacinda the profits from what they were able to sell, two months worth of rent. Lucy tries to convince Sabine not to give up on her dreams and run away. Sabine is supposed to be with Lucy and her mother. Sabine promises to always be there for Lucy, but there are some things in life that even she can’t fight.

As Sabine is leaving, Jacinda stops her to apologize. Jacinda also has a gift, a truck that Detective Rogers helped them buy it from the impound lot. It’s going to be their food truck! (My Tiana/Alt-Killian ship sails even in Hyperion Heights!) That night, Sabine brings beignets to Rogers as a thank you *EEEEEEP* Rogers also tells Sabine that they fire at Mr. Cluck’s was deliberate and it was probably done by Victoria. As they talk, the guy with the rune tattoo watches from the outside and makes a call: “It’s me. We got a problem. Someone’s looking for the girl.”
At the bar, Roni meets Henry and confesses to deleting Ivy’s text from his phone and going to see her at the Belfrey building. She then presents the photo she found, a picture of Roni (Regina) and young Henry in Storybrooke. Henry immediately recognizes himself… but why would there by a picture of them together?

At the Belfrey building, Ivy asks her mother if she can do anything, but Victoria only expresses her disappointment and embarrassment that Ivy will always fall short. Ivy returns to the secret room, and this time meets the witch being kept there. The two of them are working together on something, something to get Henry and Roni to trust Ivy. But then: “…don’t call me Ivy. It’s Drizella.”
WHATTTTTT????!!!
So… how long before Henry and Roni wake up from the curse?! Also, I’m even more against the idea of Henry/Ivy happening, *cough* I mean, Drizella. Ugh.
