@nopecontest says no one uses this place to blog anymore, only reblog, so ill post some thoughts here and call it "blogging".
the internet is getting stupider and as i approach my 30s i find myself thinking more frequently about mid 2000s internet and all the dumb things i was interested in. ytmnd. different internet forums dedicated to sonic, ed edd n eddy, and the powerpuff girls. the friends i lost contact with from those forums. avgn when he was in his 20s and just starting out. wanting to make ytps thinking that was my calling at the time. newgrounds. albinoblacksheep. getting banned from deviantart multiple times because i was under 13. none of this is present anymore and will never be present again and thats bleak to think about on a regular basis. kids on the internet today will never experience online memories like this.
im more accepting of working my same retail job forever than i ever was, as the benefits are all i think about and how things could be worse. it used to be a big anxiety of mine, trying to think about how i could break away from retail and never go back to it, but honestly there is nothing else especially when i have no skills or education (if that even matters anymore) but like at the same time i dont care as much anymore. i make enough to get by. i could buy a thing i dont need and still be able to buy things i do need. im in a good position and have things others dont and theres no reason to fret over it anymore.
ive been figuring out my identity lately. i slowly came to the realization that i do not like wearing feminine clothes or presenting solely as female. ive struggled with body dysmorphia since, i wanna say before age 8 idk anymore, and ive always associated this was having an eating disorder, which im not gonna deny that i have. i often calorie restrict, and sometimes i dont realize that im doing this because im occupying myself so much that im not thinking about taking care of myself. this will be an ever-present thing about myself, but im learning that i can combat this by changing my wardrobe. i feel more confident when im not settling for wearing a dress or putting on make up cuz i feel like i "have to", and instead choosing clothes that are actually comfortable and not form fitting. ive been trying to explore this more, still a ways to go maybe, but mentally it's been comforting to consider and ill say here i go by she/they pronouns. it used to be she/her with no hesitation but thats not me anymore.
ive been watching one piece since last year and it's been interesting. this is one of those series that i never thought about watching, mostly because i didnt really grow up watching anime religiously and this is one i knew existed but i didnt think it was something i needed to touch when i just watched western shows. one piece is good. another thing that is good is dragon ball z, another series i didnt think id ever touch. i think both changed me for the better cuz it broadened my horizons and it feels like i made new friends. not in fandoms, i mean characters. im friends with characters. puar dragon ball is my friend.
to those who have been following me forever but only on tumblr specifically, im still drawing the same ocs. theyve gotten more complex, meaning they are much sadder and burdened with insecurities that i know too well. NEVERMIND is the only thing im gonna do forever cuz it's gonna take me a long time to get anywhere with it and i dont have enough time in a day to do it all, but thats ok to have only one creative focus. NVM is therapy and i dont need another project. you can read my webcomic here but it's on hiatus until next year. it is also apart of spiderforest which is a webcomic collective, maybe check out other comics on SF too while youre at it and support webcomic creators.
im gonna be grieving about panda (the cat i used to post about here) forever and thats ok too. she passed away 2 years ago in november and i think about her every day. i dont get as emotional about it anymore though. i maybe could if i focused hard enough on it, but i dont have to do that because i have a another cat now who is named bean. she's 4 and is so fuckin silly (and smelly) and i love her a lot. more rambunctious than im used to, but the memories i and @nopecontest have begun building with her have been well worth it. here she is playing mario sunshine

you dont need to answer this if you don’t want to btw but ive read and enjoyed a lot of your analysis and lore dump stuff so. thoughts on the paramount sonic movies? (especially the second one + thoughts on whatever they might do with Shadow Stuff in the 3rd movie)
thanks! though honestly, i don't really have that many thoughts/opinions on sonic 1 and 2? i just think they're. fine. imo they get all of the characters down well - i'll defend versions of sonic that lean into a little rambunctious childishness, and tails and knuckles are the best part about the second movie. but that's kinda about all i have to say on them, they never left much of an impact on me.
while i don't normally like to make predictions or pitches for upcoming movies/media (because i always get disappointed when something is never as good as the fan pitches i see), i do have some general thoughts on what i'd like to see from the third movie. it seems like they'll be drawing from SA2 for a number of things, but i don't want a beat-for-beat retelling of that game. i'd like to see how they integrate it into the world of the paramount movies and create a unique version of that story - for example in sonic 2, james marsden's character (don't remember his name lol) mentions that his family has been around green hills for 50 years doing... something idk i dont remember. 50 years is a very important timestamp regarding Shadow Lore. if that character's history is integrated into shadow's past, i think that would be an interesting way to build up a struggle between sonic's family and shadow, and i want the drama. i want this movie to hurt me emotionally as much as it can.
and as excited as i am for shadow in the third movie, i do REALLY hope they at least introduce amy as well. i'm not sure if we'll see many new faces since balancing that many characters in a feature film is a lot to ask (unless you're marvel and you don't care about writing interesting characters AYOOO), but i don't care to see a sonic world without amy. her compassion and heroism is something that would bring a lot of life to these movies, which is something i think this particular series could use. plus, while i don't want an exact retelling of SA2, i don't think you can have a shadow origin story without amy. at least not one i like. yes im still a little mad they gave her moment to chris in sonic x. i know why they did it like i get it. but also maaaannnn c'mon where's amy :(
also they should give shadow a gun and let tails kill the president
#the live action sonic movies feel like such a blind spot in my sonic analysis brain#like yeah ive seen em. do i remember much of them? nah#fernasks#sonic loreposting

id be drawing this thing already if i wasnt sad all the time god damn my summer's nearly over in like a month.
i got time ill clutch this, i need to finish the first draft and then revise it. i've been cooking up cool sequels though!
first things first though is basically gonna set up the premise, it's a sanrio fancomic that does the whole bringing together sanrio's mainstays thing that supercute adventures does but what i'm hoping is in a more faithful way, and it's effectively using the base of onegai my melody as a springboard to new characters.
then after that, i've just got a fun grab-bag of concepts that i can tackle like issues or episodes, as well as semi-frequent elseworld type things which are probably just a parody of a horror film. because i like horror films and i think it would be funny.
coming in as a seasoned sonic fan, i both value deep characterisation and don't mind if it takes itself too seriously. i'm basically aiming for a self aware pre-boot archie sonic, and solely for entertainment value. hello kitty is apparently supposed to be for all ages, but besides aggretsuko and onegai my melody (kind of, i think. i've only ever heard of the stuff translated by 4kids which obviously got butchered, OMM is the only show ive watched with a fan translation so the playing ground isn't fair imo), their output entertainment-wise has always felt like it was written only for kids. i'm very aware the things i love are child-like, but i'd like to define them as "all ages", where they recognise and foster fans of any age and not just children. i watched the entirety of aggretsuko and 2/4ths of OMM isn't translated yet, so i wanted to make my own stuff to fawn over further.
i love these characters, and even though i never got to grow up with hello kitty outside of a single dollhouse that captured my mind whenever i'd walk past it, i'm gonna make something i hope i and the people around it will value and love. even if it's an awful mess, i hope it's a mess someone will enjoy playing in outside of myself.
anyway, i'm gonna get back to watching hello kitty super-style. for research, lol. i have to stop after a while sometimes because it's not for my age bracket, but it's still very fun!

omgosh thats more than fair!!
!! Gotta love a couple of dorks, i know i do also awww bless thats so sweet and cute!! Please tell me about them (if you want to of course!!)
Im glad you think so!! It really shows in cartoon redesigns ive done and a few cute lil creatures (strawberry shortcake, moon dreamers, carebears, a love bug and some other stuff)
same!! My fav ghibli film is kiki's delivery service. If i were to rank my top 5 it would be kiki, arriety, howl, nausicaä and ponyo. Do you have any fav games? Mine are stardew valley, skyrim and sonic adventure 2.
it really is!! Thinking of a character for ages and finally managing to draw them how you imagine them is such an amazing feeling!! I make a bunch of random designs as well and just putting together the inspiration and the aesthetics of the character to make something new ane beautiful is just so fun!!
Thats so cool and awsome im so happy you managed to do it !! I love campaign stuff (ive played 4 campaigns of dnd with different characters and I've been so happy with each of them!!)
id happily ramble about any of my oc ideas if youd like!! If there's any in particular that you want to hear more about please tell me!
also please don't worry about replying late! I don't mind, take as much time as you need! You, your life and your mental health come first!!!
Well, the main constant thing about them is that Ros is mostly an anime nerd and she's been trying to get Darnell into too but alas...
Ros loves trying new things while Darnell is kinda complacent with things being the same but is also down to support her just to keep her happy. He doesn't want to drag her down and he loves seeing her excited for something.
I don't really have a whole about there son, but he's a very sweet 3 year old that loves to help like a big boy.
He also has a bit of a raspy voice despite being a toddler, but he's perfectly fine.
Yeah, I can definitely see that!!!
OOOH, I don't think I've ever heard of Nausicaä before?? Maybe it's a film I've missed or I've must've heard of it by a different name?
I don't really play a whole lot of games but I do enjoy playing Animal Crossing and Miitopia. They're just so fun and simple.
And YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAAA, just finally having the set design that perfectly matches what you have in mind, I LOVE THAT FEELING!!!! And yes, I love putting together character by using different designs together. I have one that I'm very proud of but it's a character for the campaign and one of the players actually do follow this blog... but I'm pretty sure they'll know who when they see them... 😏
OOOH, I wanna hear more about the Werewolf and the baker, actually!! 😭😭
And also, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, you're too sweet!!!! 😭🥺😭🥺

Anonymous said: Hello friend may I ask about your brush settings? Because I am in love with your colouring and line work!
Anonymous said: Your art is so cute! What brushes do you use?
Answer:i main SAI2 now, but here are the same settings when i was using them in the original SAI!!
(i just copied my own settings in SAI2 now so they should work the same... also sometimes i use the marker tool for doodling nowadays)
Anonymous said: do you post speedpaints anywhere? i'd love to see your painting process! your art style is phenomenal hngh
Anonymous said: Do you have a youtube channel? Just wondering, since I can't seem to find it. I'd like to watch some speedpaints or something .u.
Anonymous said: could do you a tutorial on how you color hair??? its so pretty and baffles me all the time
Anonymous said: Would you ever do a tutorial showing how you draw? I've see you post on how you color but not lineart (ps your style is super duper cute!!)
Anonymous said: Ayy ;3c hello stocky, your art is amazing ;; how is your process for color your drawings? Plz need to know! God bless you♥
Anonymous said: How do you color soooo well? Can I get some tips? ( ;n; )
Answer: i’ve sometimes done lil art streams for friends before! i could use the same capture software to make speedpaints sometime.... i’ve been considering it for a while actually!
my process can be a lil sloppy when i try to break it down into steps for tutorials so i think the best way to show + explain is through art streams (& video process)...
i was thinking of starting art streams on twitch in the near future too... it’s just when i’ll finally be able to get setup finally that i’d be able to set a streaming schedule
Anonymous said: I never played Megaman but I used to watch my older brother play it, and I finally started playing it because of your art too lmao (i love it)
Answer: MEGAMAN GOOD!!! im so glad you’re enjoying the series now too!!

Anonymous said: ((whispers, this may have been asked before and I wasn't sure where to ask it, but what does "i tried my best x5" mean? is it a reference to something? ;;))
Answer: OH NO WORRIES I’LL CLEAR IT UP!! it’s in reference to a youtube user’s rp comments as “kagamine len”. i’ve seen it MANY years ago & at that time it became sorta an inside joke between me & my friends.
later i referenced/used it as a response a few times on my len askblog to keep it going.
it’s a small lil thing i guess but i’ve sorta adopted the saying now haha

Sonic the Hedgehog Edutainment Games
youtube
Ah, video games. Nothing was better as a kid then running home from school, forgetting everything you learned that day, and diving into some video games. That is unless your parents were fools who fell for the ruse of “Edutainment” video games. What is “edutainment?” you might be wondering? Its a combination of the words “Educational” and “Entertainment”, and usually winds up being neither.
These games are designed to ease the minds of parents fraught with distress over reports of children being corrupted by video games. After all, in the 80′s arcades were seen as seedy places where gangs hung out, and the 90′s had the congressional hearings over sex and violence in video games. Edutainment games weren’t meant to replace “mature” games, but rather level the playing field and show that games could be more than what they were.
While Nintendo’s dabbled with educational games before, Sega really lead the market in the 90′s with their Sega Pico, a console designed specifically for younger gamers. Their Sega PC line of games for Windows also included notable educational titles. Of course none of this would happen without our blue friend Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic’s Edusoft
I wanna get this one out of the way first, even though its not actually a game its still worth talking about. Sonic’s Edusoft was a pitch by Tiertex, a British studio who developed numerous games for both the Master System and Game Gear. The game is only a prototype, possibly cobbled together to pitch to Sega, who ultimately passed on the idea.
The prototype had impressive visuals, with graphics that resembled the original Sega Genesis game. Sonic’s Edusoft features an isometric overworld where the player can guide Sonic to each event. Most events consist of simple math or spelling problems, with Sonic racing against badniks and little animals to see who can solve them faster. The game’s pretty repetitive, and the mini-games are broken. Had Edusoft been given the go-ahead, I’m sure the wrinkles would’ve been ironed out.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s Game World
Sonic the Hedgehog’s Game World was released in August of 1994 for the Sega Pico. The game is a collection of mini-games featuring Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Dr. Robotnik, and is the first game to feature voices for Tails and Amy. This game and the following are both for the Sega Pico, a console for preschool age kids that didn’t have a standard controller. Instead, it used a touch pad with a special tethered touch pen, as well as several colored buttons on the console itself. Cartridges included storybook-like pages that the player can flip to take them to different areas.
Sonic’s Game World doesn’t have much educational value to it, being mostly a series of mini-games. The plot puts Sonic, Tails, Amy, Dr. Robotnik, and the little animals into a family fun center inspired space. Each floor has a different set of games like hoops or car race. The final page, like all Pico games, features a Sonic themed art studio where players can free draw.
Tails and the Music Maker
Tails and the Music Maker was released in October of 1994 for the Sega Pico. The focus of the game is to teach kids about music and instruments with Sonic’s favorite little buddy Tails. This game’s another Sega Pico mini-game collection, which is likely why the Pico isn’t popular even among retro collectors. There really aren’t any Gunstar Heroes or Monster World IV type experiences, no cult classics to speak of, unless you’re a die-hard Sonic fan who needs these games.
Anyways, this is one of the rare American produced Sonic games. Tails’s design in the game is lifted straight from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series. The game features all sorts of public domain classical music, and at the end you even get to see Sonic.
Sonic’s Schoolhouse
Sonic’s Schoolhouse remains the single greatest oddity in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was released for Windows PCs in October of 1996, Sonic guides players through his school where the player can answer questions pertaining to school topics, as well as play mini-games. Educational games just love to throw mini-games at you.
The game itself feels like a re-skin of Wolfenstein 3D, or an interactive version of the Windows 95 hallway maze screensaver. Schoolhouse is also notable for using assets from the canceled Sega Saturn game Sonic X-Treme. Sonic’s character animations were recycled from the canceled game for Schoolhouse, its possible the games were meant to be released together.
Sega’s educational video games were more popular in Japan than anywhere else. The Pico was widely celebrated by American parenting magazines as a great toy for young children, but for whatever reason it didn’t take off the way it did in Japan. The Japanese public embraced the Pico, and the console would receive support until the mid-2000′s. The Pico even received games from rival company Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise.
Sega took a different approach to educational games in the 2000′s by forming a partnership with Leapfrog. This deal resulted in two Sonic games released exclusively for the Leapster and Didj handheld consoles. One of the two games was based on the hit anime series Sonic X, while the other is a generic educational game featuring graphics from Sonic 1.

All of the questions for the shipping thing 😈
AAAAAAAAA Im gonna d i e I hope ur happy abt this long post u dork
Talk about the first ship you ever had.Dang dude,,,,,,, makin me think,,,,,, I suppose it was Jay and Nya from Ninjago?? I thought they were cute but wasnt like SUPER into it, the other one that I was into was me shipping an “OC” with Lloyd L m a oTalk about three of the most important ships throughout your life.Three most important? Uhhhh idk abt important exactly, like idk what the whole requirements for one being more important than another would be. Though, the main one that always makes me happy, no matter the circumstance, is McHanzo. Idk what it is about it but it always makes me smile and helped cheer me up plenty of times throughout the year hahaWhat’s your current OTP?McHanzo or Sonadow tbhWhat’s your current NOTP?shi//ma//da//cestDo you have any poly ships?Yes with some of my OCs!!How do you feel about love triangles? They CAN be done right but most of the time im just over here like, ‘UGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH No one c a r e s’How do you feel about RPF?Idk what that stands for 3Have you ever shipped yourself with a character? Not myself, but my OCs. Tho I suppose my first ever OC was very similar in looks so I suppose partiallyDo you have many ships that never got together at all?Lmao yeah man, most people seem to forget that McHanzo started out as a crack ship hahaDo you ship any characters that have never met?See the previous statementTalk about your favorite first kiss.Wonderbat in the Starcrossed episode. It was gr8 man. Kissing to blend in with the crowd.Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together? The Nya-Jay-Cole love triangle was forced and stupid. LETTHEMBEHAPPY–Has a ship ever broken your heart?HAVE YOU EVER READ UNDER THE WISTERIA TREE? IVE NEVER BEEN SO EMOTIONAL OVER A FIC. I SOBBED FOR A GOOD HOUR AFTERWARDS MANHow do you feel about will they/won’t they?I think it depends on the material, like Wonderbat in JL was a good one cause we still got content for it here and there but it was never ‘official’ but it wasnt relentlessly teased at teither, it wasnt a main focus nor dragged down the show. It was acceptable cuz they were also, yknow superheroes and Bruce isnt the type of character to just suddenly settle down
But otherwise I think it can get really annoying and unnecessary if done wrongHave you ever “shipped at first sight”?Yeah lolTalk about a ship you initially disliked.Im p sure I used to be p decently opposed to Sonadow at first, because at the time I was super into Sonamy (which I’ll talk abt laterrr) though I learned more of the reasoning behind it and was like ‘oh! This is p decent’ and since Ive re-entered the Snoc fandom, Ive sorta reanalyzed my ships and looked into what real chemistry co9uld be there and frankly I just think that Sonadow has a lot of working potential, it reminds me of how I felt about McHanzo at first; They have a lot of working potential and thats what I love building off of. They have the potential to work really well together because the balance each other’s personalities and senses out (Shads bringing a sense of realism and Sonic bringing a lightheartedness) and neither has to worry about the other getting into trouble/hurt/being used against them because they’re both extremely capable of handling themselves. The difference between them and a ship like Mchanzo though is that they’ve already previously worked together and interacted on multiple occasions.
Im sorry I just have a LOT to say abt the ships I love ha h a–Also Ive noticed I have a tendacy to like ships where the partners balance each other?? God im predictableTalk about a pairing you’ve stopped shipping romantically.Sonamy has sort’ve dropped off the radar for me (except in Boom and maybe in X) at least in a more serious regard. Idk how to quite get how I feel into words r i pTalk about a moment which made you question an entire ship.I was actually watching a DHT (I think thats his name idk im tired lol) Top ten abt his personal opinions on ships? Cuz I like hearing other people’s opinions and point of views!! And I mean idk his points with Sonamy were really true and while I still think Sonamy is really cute and has gotten a bit less violent in recent years, the negatives at this point are sortve outweighing the positives atm imo? So it was just kinda like ‘huh. Thats tru’Have you ever shipped something despite yourself?No..? Idk if Im exactly understanding the question but if its asking if I still shipped smth even if it was against my morals? Then a definite no, if its nasty, its nasty imoTalk about a ship you feel alone in shipping.Wonderbat fandom where r u??Is there a ship you just don’t get, but have nothing against? The only ones I can really think of are Shadilver and Sonouge?? :00 Im just curious as to like the origin or reasoning behind the ships! I love hearing people’s reasons beyond “They look nice together” yknow? HahaWhich of your ships have the best chemistry?WONDERBATWONDERBATWONDERBATWONDERBAT–Which of your ships deserve better writing?Sonamy,,,, Jaya,,, //criesDo you mostly ship canon pairings? It depends! But a lot of times I end up soHave you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs and graphics or similar?I probably have LMAOHave you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic you’re more drawn to?yEAHI like the dark broody one and the lighthearted cheery one where theyre opposite but not so much that they never get along. I like ones where its like sun and moon, where they balance each other out and both bring something to the table. Where its mutual. Is there a ship you’ve shipped for most of your life?Idk man, I didnt really have ships before I was 10 so like–Does shipping come easily to you?Somewhat, I need some good and moral reasons to ship two ppl before I turn into shipping puddy–Do you need to ship something to really enjoy a movie/book/tv show/comic?No, but if there’s a rlly good ship that I enjoy in the content then it definitely boosts how much enjoyment I get out of it hahaName a couple of fandoms in which you have no ships.I can only rlly say that for rlly obscure fandoms, like Ranger’s Apprentice. There’s also the FNAF book-verseTalk about one of your favorite headcanons for a ship you love. For Sonic and Shads I read this one thing ages ago abt Sonic teaching Shadow all the meanings each flower type and color portrays so them giving each other meaningful bouquets n shit is RLLY CUTE AND I LOVE THAT KIND OF STUFF OKAY,,,,,,Share five must-read fics.UNDER THE WISTERIA TREE IS EQUAL TO FIVE MUST READS! gO READ IT! (BUT BE PREPARED FOR TEARS AND LOTS OF THEM)Name your favorite fanartist(s).uHHHH @ludwigplayingthetrombone (Their expression are so soft,,,, n sweet,,, its so fluffy n good,,,) Share your favorite fanmix for your OTP.I dont have a favorite so just go look up some Everytime we touch PMVRecommend 1-5 shipper blogs.¯\_(ツ)_/¯Do you create fanmixes/gif sets/fanart/fic/fanvids and so on for you ships?I draw,,,, every once in a blue moon,,,,Do you have a favorite trope and/or AU for your OTP?Mutual pining and dorky fluffDo you like and use ship names?Yes!!!Is there a fictional relationship you’d really want for yourself?Nah boi Im ace lolIf you could change one thing about your OTP, what would that be?More interactions,,,, pl z ,,,,(diduknow that the “Pretty handy with that bow!” vl came out on my birthday last year?? Best gift man, thanks Blizzard, love ya)

lucas & barry's daughter who's essentially a really laid back shounen protagonist. don't have a real name for her but ive been calling her wendy for now. takes after barry in terms of personality REALLY HARD except she has even fewer braincells, somehow, and while she is super speedy n impatient n goofy she's also infinitely chiller about it. think, like, sonic. also looks almost exactly like him (barry not sonic) because barry looks almost exactly like HIS dad so i figure those genes run strong as fuck. uses flying types, first pokemon was a drifloon (now drifblim) bred from her dad lucas' drifblim. "doing the gym challenge" but really she's just travelling around sinnoh at her own pace occasionally grabbing a badge if she feels like it but eh who cares. she's 15ish
sycamore's kid, basil. very laid back and smooth in an almost deadpan sort of way, the epitome of "life is already so goddamn weird this might as well happen." can be weirdly intense at times. is SUPER passionate when u get to kno them. gender is not exist, uses any and all pronouns. has another parent but that's for me to know and everyone else to guess! is a biomechanic who designs prosthesis for pokemon that can be used for work and battling. primarily uses fire and steel types, his partner is a pignite that they actually got from hop of all people as a tepig when he was a little kid. started her pokemon journey in unova but gave up on it to focus on studying instead. now a pretty well-known scientist & engineer, does a lot of work on interactions between pokemon and technology in general, currently working in hoenn. probably ehhh 22-23
steven and wallace's son who i actually don't have a name for, lol. very dorky and sunshine-y archeology nerd. wallace acts a little miffed (jokingly ofc) that they don't have a glamorous contest prodigy of a son to carry on their legacy, but it's actually 100% completely their fault that he's an avid archeologist, they taught him all about hoenn's mythos and history as a kid, as he will eventually take their place as sootopolitan or whatever that title is, they just... did not expect him to get so into it. steven on the other hand loudly encourages his sons nerdiness and probably got yelled at by wallace several times for encouraging their kid to lick rocks. LOVES sootopolis and hoenn in general, never wants to leave. did do their journey in unova however, during which they met basil (journeying at the same time) who now has a HUGE crush on him which he is completely oblivous to. probably the only person that can get them flustered. can often be found curled up in a pile of blankets sketching out a cool ancient mural he studied earlier that day. i have no clue what his first pokemon was, mudkip maybe? hes 20-21
I HAVE OTHER ONES feel free to ask abt kids in different regions or if various characters have any bastards running around i will. ramble excitedly. for entirely too long
*vibrates while trying not to talk about my pokemon fankids*

We need to talk about culture appropriation: why Lionel Shriver’s speech touched a nerve
Is it OK for white scribes to take on a black spokesperson? The assert that followed the American novelists address in Brisbane has shed new light on one of cultures hottest debates one that has hundreds of years of backstory and has sounded through literature, rap, stone and Hollywood movies
Lionel Shriver knew she was going to annoy beings. Inviting a renowned iconoclast to speak about community and belonging is like expecting a great grey shark to balance a beach ball on its nose, she articulated. She then used her keynote speech at the Brisbane columnists festival to tear into the debate that novelists most particularly grey writers are guilty of cultural appropriation by writing from the point of view of references from other culture backgrounds.
Referring to occurrences in which members of student authority at an American university faced impeachment after attended a tequila party wearing sombreros, and reports of a ban on a Mexican eatery from making out sombreros, the author of We Necessity to Talk About Kevin announced: The moral of the sombrero scandals is clear: youre not supposed to try on other people hats . Yet thats what were paid to time, isnt it? Step into other folks shoes, and try on their hats.
The response was instant. Sudanese-born Australian social activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied, who was attending the event, walked out and then rapidly wrote a comment part which was contended that Shrivers speech was a celebration of the unfettered exploitation of the experiences of others, for the purposes of the guise of fiction.
The argument is one of the most parted yet in a conversation that has a long record across literature, music, arts and rendition. While story might be the catalyst for this discussion, in the eyes of Abdel-Magied and others the issues are deeply rooted in real-world politics and a long history.
The image of the blackface singer creator of 1830s America the lily-white musician decorated up to look like a caricature of an African-American person and play-act comic skits is perhaps the most oft-invoked illustration of culture appropriation from record. The ethnic dynamic of minstrelsy was complex it was performed by African-American and Anglo actors alike but while African-American performers often sought to gain fiscal insurance from these best practices and in some cases use their scaffold to counter negative public stereotypes of themselves, white-hot performers reinforced those stereotypes. This produced within a society which continues to be has not been able to abolished bondage, and in which the political ability dynamic was very much racialized. As the civil right crusade thrived, so did criticism of white people attempting to exploit the pictures and events of people of colour for social and financial gain.
This pattern is recurred of all the countries, particularly in places that experienced colonisation and slavery, such as India, Australia and South Africa. As students, creators, activists and writers of emblazon fought to gain access to mainly grey institutions and public seats, and gained visibility in the cultural globule, they began to criticise the inaccurate images of themselves they construed created by and for the profit of others.
The issue has been heavily explored within the establishments but has reaped momentum in popular culture over the past decade. It underpins criticism of, among other things, Iggy Azaleas sonic blackness, Coldplays myopic construction of India in their music videos, and Miley Cyruss dance moves. Director Cameron Crowe lately apologised for casting Anglo-American actor Emma Stone as a part-Asian reputation in the 2015 movie Aloha not the first time a grey performer has been thrown to play a reputation from a different ethnic background in mainstream cinema. The proof has been assisted particularly by the feminist parish focus on intersectionality crudely the idea that discrimination takes on different forms depending on the hasten, class and/ or gender of the person or persons subject to discrimination.
The charge of culture appropriation is not confined to fiction, but at the moment thats perhaps the most heatedly raced terrain . In March, Harry Potter author JK Rowling was accused of proper the living institution of a marginalised people after a tale produced to her Pottermore website drew upon Navajo narratives about skinwalkers. Shriver herself mentioned the case of vehicles of grey British scribe Chris Cleave, whose novel The Other Hand is partly narrated by the character of a teenage Nigerian girl. In principle, I admire his firmnes, Shriver replied. She then went on to item reviewer Margot Kaminskis concerns that Cleave was manipulating the character, that he ought to be taking special care with representing its own experience that was not his own.
Shriver took aim at the proposal that an scribe should not use a reference they created for the service of a plot they saw. Of trend hes using them for his patch! she suggested. How could he not? They are his personas, to be operated at his caprice, to fulfil whatever purpose he cares to apply them to.
What borderlines around our own lives are we mandated to remain within? questioned Shriver. I would argue that any floor you are able to draw yours is yours to tell, and trying to push the boundaries of the authors its own experience is part of a fiction columnists job.
While it seems obvious that novelists of myth will endeavour to write from perspectives that are not their own, numerous writers of quality bicker there is a direct relationship between certain difficulties they face trying to make headway in the literary industry and the success of grey scribes who illustrate people of colour in their myth and who go on to build a successful literary profession off that. The difference between cultural illustration and cultural rights appropriation, by this logic, lies in the grey novelist telling storeys( and therefore taking producing possibilities) that would be better suited to a novelist of colour.
Some writers argue that it works in reverse, more. In an phenomenon for the Guardian in November last year, Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James told publishers too often pander to the white-hot wife( the majority of members of the book-buying public ), making writers of colouring to do the same. In a Facebook post responding to novelist Claire Vaye Watkins widely circulated essay On Pandering, James used to say the kind of storey favoured by publishers and bestows committees abode suburban white woman in the middle of ennui knowledge keenly observed epiphany pushed columnists of colour into literary conformity for fear of losing out on a journal deal.
Speaking to Guardian Australia, Indigenous Australian author and Miles Franklin winner Kim Scott adds its crucial to listen to the expressions of marginalised people who may not be given enough space to tell their own floors. Fibs are provides; theyre about reform and opening up interior macrocosms in the interests of expanding the shared nature and the common sense of community. So if theres many articulations telling we need more of us addressing our tales, from wherever theyre saying that, then that needs to be listened to.
Omar Musa, the Malaysian-Australian poet, rapper and novelist, told Guardian Australia: There is a history of stereotypes being continued by lily-white the authors and very, exceedingly reductive narrations. Beings are just generally much more cautious of that.
Musa supposes grey scribes should read, support and promote the operational activities of the novelists of emblazon before attempting to encroach on that cavity themselves, if that is something they want to do. But he admits he experiences the issue difficult; the suggestion that writers shouldnt move outside the boundaries of their own experiences comes into direct conflict with what he sees as the purpose of fiction: to empathise with and understand other families lives.
If youre going to write from someone elses perspective, Musa says, its important to shun stereotypes, especially if you want to move the specific characteristics rich and flawed as a good character should be.

Musa has his own experience of writing across the cultural subdivide. His first novel, Here Come The Dogs, was told from the perspective of a reference with a Samoan background. Musa answers consenting criticism is a crucial part of this process: There will be people who will tell you that maybe you didnt quite get this right, and you just have to cop that flack.
Maxine Beneba Clarke is an Australian-based novelist of African-Caribbean descent. Her memoir The Hate Race was prompted by a flow of racial insult; her accumulation of short narratives, Foreign Soil, was published to great acclaim after she won the Victorian Premiers Literary award for anunpublished manuscript in 2013. I think there are two situations in which Ive written outside of the African diaspora, she mentions. In both cases the latter are parts of short fiction and the process of writing them took several years, simply because of that consultation.
Beneba Clarke conceives consultation is all-important, but so is examining your own impulse to write from the perspective of another. What does it mean to be a writer “whos not” national minorities writer and wanting to change your literature? How do you do that? I think that was the opportunity for conversation that was missed[ in Shrivers speech] … How do we feel about writing each others stories and how do we go about it? Whats the respectful practice to go about it?
In some ways it comes down to personal ethics, she answers. Whether you feel you are doing no damage; whether you feel you are doing it sensitively; and, I believe, whether the publisher or the reader been agreed that you have done it sensitively.
Helen Young from the University of Sydney English department speaks fiction can have a very real impact on marginalised people. Individual journals have an impact on individual lives, but representation overall composes a seat and an environment in which people can feel like its OK to be who they are.
The politics of representation is a huge question in the science fiction and fantasy worlds very, speaks Young. This was exemplified by the recent expeditions against a comprehended leftwing bias in the Hugo gifts, in which disgruntled rightwing science fiction and fantasy columnists bickered the awards were being diminished by what the hell is experienced as the tendency of voters to opt studies simply about racial prejudice and exploitation and the like over traditional swashbuckling adventures.
Referring to the JK Rowling occurrence, Young suggests precisely because imagination is often to be considered as escapist, doesnt symbolize those stories dont stuff, or that authors should not treat different sources of their brainchild with respect. Theyre still the lived, hallowed narrations of living cultures, she supposes. Theyre the beliefs of real parties. So if from a western view you go, oh well, its just myth, I can do whatever I like with it, thats a problem.
Kate Grenville said she find writing Indigenous attributes was beyond her when she wrote The Secret River. Image: Sarah Lee for the Guardian
In some respects, the dirt seems to be changing. When Kate Grenville wrote her highly acclaimed historic romance about colonial Australia, The Secret River, in 2005, she shunned writing from the standpoint of Indigenous characters because she felt it was beyond her. Speaking to Ramona Koval on ABC radio, she alleged: What I didnt want to do was step into the heads of any of the Aboriginal attributes. I think that kind of appropriation … theres been too much of that in our writing. In her tale The Lieutenant, the sequel to The Secret River, nonetheless, Grenville did go into outlining more rounded Indigenous reputations, but only after deep and careful involvement with the historical records upon which her characters were based.
All the writers who spoke to Guardian Australia say they believe that considering the question of cultural appropriation is decisive, but the tenor of that discussion matters. They say that making a mockery of marginalised peoples concerns about image and appropriation does not constitute a constructive debate.
Scott, who has previously suggested a postponement on grey columnists used to describe Indigenous Australia, speaks lily-white columnists could use fiction itself to explore the tension about representation. Even the desire to occupy the consciousness of the other, that can be explored in story.
For Musa, the transformation needs to go beyond volumes: You probably cant have a change in literary culture without a change in the whole culture of the two countries, he says.
On the question of progress, in Australia at least, Beneba Clarke replies: “Theres” two institutions of was just thinking about this: that Australian literature is not diverse enough for Anglo-Australian novelists to be even considering writing from other cultures, and the other school of thought is, well, how do we change literature then, given that most of our writers are Anglo-Australian? Are we locking ourselves into an inevitably whitewashed world of literature?
And I dont really subscribe to either thought; I dont know what the answer is but I can understand both positions. But I think what I perfectly cant understand is disregard for any kind of consultation and an inability to understand when people of colour are outraged.
Such articles has been amended to clarify that the Hugo awardings are voted on by the public.
