I got my first mp3 player when I was 13. I still have it. It came with 100 free downloads from a site that probably doesn't exist anymore. I downloaded 100 songs, and listened to them nonstop for two weeks. On day 15, every one of those songs "expired", and were no longer playable. That experience has been in the back of my mind ever since, and that's why I have refused to pay for anything digital (with a couple of notable exceptions), and every bit of media I purchase is a physical disc.
#im watching people learn the lesson i learned when i eas 13#but at much greater cost#because i didnt buy a whole season of a tv show#or an entire itunes playlist#for it to cease to exist some time later#i just had to re download those songs from youtube#the notable exceptions are steam games where#the discs are too old to be compatible with my computers#and the entire game with expansions and everything costs less than $2#and tbh i still pick those up at thrift stores when i find them#but yeah i dont ever buy movies music or books in digital form

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

New Dragon Age: The Veilguard Journal entry:
"Journal #9 Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe Co-Composers Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Composers Announcement"

"Hey everyone! Today, we’re so happy to announce that two-time Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer and Grammy-winner Lorne Balfe have co-composed the Official Soundtrack (OST) for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the new single-player fantasy RPG experience coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, EA App, and Epic Games Store on October 31, 2024. The legendary composers have collaborated on dozens of projects throughout their careers and have worked closely with the development team at BioWare to create a score celebrating the world of Thedas and its heroes. Fans will be able to pre-order the Official Soundtrack album beginning October 18th on iTunes and Amazon Music, with the formal release to follow on November 1st via Lakeshore Records. Moreover, in celebration of the announcement, Dragon Age: The Veilguard Main Theme, has been released as the first single from the official soundtrack, and can be downloaded and streamed now on all major music services such as Spotify, iTunes, and more. “One of our goals with the music for Dragon Age: The Veilguard was to provide a strong anchor between the world of Thedas and the diverse characters that inhabit that world,” said Cody Behiel, Audio Director for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. “We wanted to ensure that throughout the game's story, whether at its most epic or its most intimate, players were able to feel their actions connect to the personal relationships they have been fostering. Working with Hans and Lorne took these ideas to greater emotional heights than we thought possible and I am so excited for players to experience it.” Oscar-winner Zimmer, one of the world’s most renowned composers, has won numerous awards and honors for his scores in such films as Dune, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, and many more. With over 100 film scores to his credit, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the first video game soundtrack composed by Zimmer in nearly 10 years. Speaking about his work on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Hans Zimmer said, “Epic stories lend themselves to epic scores, and the narrative tapestry BioWare has woven in The Veilguard never left me wanting for inspiration, be it during the game’s moments of shining heroism or darkest emotional pitfalls. I’m proud to have shared the journey of creating the musical backdrop for the latest Dragon Age adventure with Lorne and the entire design team.” GRAMMY Award-winner Balfe has over 170 composer credits across movies, TV and games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Beyond: Two Souls, all of which received nominations for Best Original Music from the BAFTA Games Awards. “The world of Dragon Age is an unprecedented immersive experience, and never more so than in Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” said Lorne Balfe. “Crafting this score alongside Hans Zimmer has allowed us to bring an epic new majesty to the realm of Thedas, bringing these characters and their stories to the next level. I cannot wait for people to play this game.” Players can pre-order Dragon Age: The Veilguard now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. We still have a few more things to talk about before release, and we hope you enjoy our main theme in the meantime! — The Dragon Age Team"

Remix resources: streaming & buying
First trustworthy Spotify playlist I've found so far (please feel free to link to others in the comments to share the love)!
Here's a good Apple Music playlist:
For YouTube, I recommend getting the Scener extension on Chrome and joining the streaming party so you don't have to babysit manual streams or take time making a queue.
Remember to manually search and add Remixes, Wander, and Wonder to your playlists on Pandora, Tidal, Amazon, Deezer and Qobuz (which is being fussy for me right now, don't know about you guys).
Then remember to go on iTunes and buy each song separately and delete from your library (you may have to manually search for Remixes, Wander, and Wonder).
US ARMY--the BTS store is selling Remixes but THIS IS NOT CHART ILLEGIBLE. It WILL NOT COUNT for us if you buy it.
I am running on very little sleep these days so forgive me if I missed anything. Please feel most welcome to share resources in comments--we all go far when we go together!
Love, Roo

Some Paul pics I found on Google search. They must be around 2010-2011. Plus two older pics, for no particular reason. 😊
Also, some important news:
1. According to the official Instagram account of The Undertaker movie, the film will be available on several platforms today, including iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft Store, etc. Isn't that great news?? I personally am very happy, as I am finally going to see this movie!!!

2. Greenwich Theatre in London announced that Paul will be the leading role in a play titled The River, from 1-27 October!!!

Happy McGann Monday!

Bonus: A clip of Paul reciting a Seamus Heaney poem, from the Institute of Irish Studies YouTube account.

#IAmUrban Goes iTunes - and Richard aims for the West End in Early 2025
Finally one of Richard‘s works is available for everyone! As producer Matthew Mitchell told us last year, I am Urban has made it to streaming. I have already located the film on iTunes where you can rent or buy it. I think it is also available on YouTube Movies and the Google Play store. So hopefully access is now for everyone. On the occasion of Urban going to streaming, Richard was interviewed…

Lost media quest: H&G Epic Tales (part 1)
Some times ago I stumbled upon the trailer for an animated storybook adapting "Hansel and Gretel". I even made a quick post about it and then moved on my way. However, what I was not expecting was that my casual search would end up throwing me into a whole "lost media" investigation...
So I present to you the first report of my search for the lost media "Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales".
"Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales" is the English title of an interactive, animated storybook originally created by a Dutch team - hence why it exists also under the Dutch name "Hans en Grietje - Epic Tales".
Its trailer (posted around 2012/2013) is still around the Internet - on both Youtube and Vimeo, in English. It showcases you all the effort put into the product as well as the quality of it all - because when you think "Interactive storybook" you think "Just some still pictures you flip over while a voice narrates in the background". But here, not at all: you have entire animated tableaux allowing for a true point-and-click kind of game, intercut with entire animated segments and sequences - making this interactive storybook quite close to a full cartoon or simplified video-game.
In fact, I am not the only one to say this: numerous reviews pointed out this application could be considered a full cartoon in itself. And if some comparisons are left a bit generic "A cartoon feeling", "It could be a Saturday morning cartoon" I have seen one review even going as far as to compare this traditional 2D animation to a Disney movie!
youtube
I especially love the art style here which is reminiscent of classic, old fairytale cartoons - and I will come back to this element later because I do believe the game has easter-eggs or nods to classics of the fairytale animation.
Not only that, but as the trailer indicates, this game was supposed to be the first of an entire line of animated, interactive storybooks, the "Epic Tales" line, each reinventing fairytales, all narrated by the same storytelling character you see in the trailer, Silvertongue the (elf? dwarf?) who beats up gnomes to bring books to life... To have such a big project coming from Dutch folks isn't so surprising given the strong Dutch love for fairytales (it is the land of the Efteling park, after all).
In fact, the Epic Tales line had not only its own website (that you can see in a different promo for the app, here) but also a Facebook page and a Twitter account to promote the release of the game.
The game was released on iOs format and distributed by Apple. You could get it on your iPad or iPhone by just buying it on the App Store or iTunes store. And it was met with very, very positive reviews. Everybody agreed on saying this game was awesome, the dub very good, the interactions fun, the music delightful - in a word, absolutely perfect. Here is a handful of positive reviews I could find in English ; coupled with another handful of articles in Dutch this time. Mind you, some people do complain about the story being a tad bit too "light" for their taste - as in everybody agrees it is a visual treat with splendid visuals and a goofy tone perfect for kids, but some do complain about a lack of "darkness" (one review even regretted the "psycho-drama" of the original story, absent from this light-hearted story). I personally think there's enough dark Hansel and Gretel retellings out there to allow us a nice light-hearted, goofy, innocent version, but oh well, that's just my opinion... I'll return to these changes in a later post.
These online articles are notably quite precious for bringing additional screenshots of this now unfortunately lost media...
Lost yes: for if you check the App stores and iTunes pages today, it seems Apple has removed the game from their offer. And given Apple was the only distributor... it seems you cannot get it anywhere else.
The Epic Tales website (epictales.com) has been brought down - though you can still find it back thanks to Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, which did preserve several versions of it. The Facebook page for Epic Tales is still here too, though inactive since the app's release. As for the Twitter account... it seems that after a few years of inactivy it was briefly taken over by a little girl who posted goofy pictures of her on it... Was it the account-owner's daughter, niece or little sister? I don't know but it seems clearly that this account is a dead-end too.
Now, outside of the trailer, official accounts and online reviews, the last remaining official bits of this animated project (because there is one un-official element I will go to later) are the Anikey Studios videos. Anikey Studio is one of the two big teams that worked on the "Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales" project, alongside Cloud Castle Interactive, and while the Epic Tales line seems dead and gone, Anikey is still working a lot, regularly creating and publishing animated shorts. They have a Facebook, a LinkedIn, an Instagram - but more interestingly a Vimeo account on which they regularly post videos (itself doubled by a Youtube channel). And they post yearly Demoreels collecting bits and extracts from their animation projects. Including "Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales".
Now, unfortunately they only use the scenes from the trailer of the interactive storybook, so nothing new - but still it worth checking out. The extracts most prominently appear within their Demoreels of the years 2016 and 2012 (I am using the Vimeo version, not the Youtube ones).
And so far, at first glance, this is it. If we do just a superficial search, it is a good-looking app that got removed by Apple ; a big hopeful project with a lot of effort put into it that everybody forgot about or did not notice ; a whole line of fairytale animations that got cancelled right after its first instalment. A first instalment seemingly disappeared into the limbo of "lost media"... But for me, it was only the start of the investigation - because if you know me, you'll know I can get incredibly frustrated when I see something cool I just happened to miss ; and as an enjoyer of both traditional hand-drawn animation and fairytale adaptations, this app seemed so wonderful...
As such, I am currently undergoing a sort of investigation to collect everything I can find and save about this animated storybook. Given I am not an expert "lost media hunter", I might find nothing at all - but at least it will be a fun ride playing the investigator for once! Plus something within the occult forces of the world seem to constantly condemn my blog to focus on "Hansel and Gretel"... I don't know why but every time it gets brought back to me one way or another. So who am I to oppose the mysterious flow of nature?
If any of you ever heard of this app before - if maybe you downloaded it some time ago, if you know someone who played it, or maybe if you still have it somewhere in your Apple product, please do contact me! Even the slightest memory can be of incredible use for such an investigation. Myself I am going to perform a breakdown of all the information I could find, and the following posts of this series are going to try to "reconstruct" what the app was about, and how the story unfold in this version - because here's the thing, it isn't just a regular, straightforward Hansel and Gretel retelling. They actually added and changed several elements in it... But that will be for another post.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. The application is somehow listed within the catalogues of several Dutch libraries. I don't really know much about how these libraries work, but if somehow there is a Dutch person who sees this post, could you eventually bring me some help? It would be very appreciated!

I bought my dad a new laptop for Christmas. I need a fucking degree in computer sciences in order to set the damn thing up and get it how he wants it and easy for him to use. THANKS BEING A PIECE OF SHIT, WINDOWS/MICROSOFT!! Your Windows 11 update to make things "better" or "easier" for people to use is bullshit. I can't even install FIREFOX on the damn thing, cuz apparently I need something from the Microsoft Store to run the installation program. Which means setting up an Microsoft account for him. Which means getting a verification code sent to his email in order to finish setting up his account, which I can't currently get into cuz he never remembers his password to things and rarely uses email, do you think he can remember his email password? Fuck no.
Also, a resounding FUCKING. FUCK. YOU. to Apple for making their iPhone unhackable. He hasn't used his old iPhone in over a year, but it has all of the pictures of his beloved dog trapped on it...he can't remember the passcode to get into the phone. The only way I'd be able to possibly hack into it, would result in losing everything on it. 6 years worth of pictures lost forever (because no, he didn't have an iTunes account, so no,his phone was never set up to automatically backup everything onto iCloud).
Today is my mom's birthday. I came downstairs to wish her a happy birthday, open her presents from my dad and me, and started back upstairs. She is now mad cuz I went back upstairs instead of staying downstairs to watch the movie(s) my dad brought over with them. THERE'S FUCKING NOWHERE FOR ME TO SIT! I'm not sitting on the livingroom floor.
🙄😭 I can't win for shit. I'm going back to bed.

Good read
Tower Records, Waxie Maxie, and Sam Goody were my favorite places to buy music. Then there was the Blockbuster video Stores and Hollywood Video was their competitor. Shopping Malls and food courts. My god some parts of the past were just better and we were better off because of it. Steve Jobs forever changed the way we listen/consume and listen to music which also trickled into how we consume and watch movies as well.

31/10/2023 || Day 103
Personal Chatter (aka it's Halloween!)
Every year my mom and I watch Beetlejuice and Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. We watched the former 2 days ago and the latter tonight, as well as Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) yesterday and Abbott & Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tonight. Honestly, I don't usually watch this many movies in a row, but hey, it's Halloween. I also started playing Bioshock tonight which should be fun considering I'm a big chicken and playing with headphones makes it a little scarier imo.
-----
Programming
Today was spent doing some maintenance stuff. I cleaned up my portfolio and changed the layout a little bit, mainly by separating projects by "personal", "online", and "school". I've also been slowly getting more albums to youtube to transfer over to itunes, and while my program to fetch the metadata works well, the problem arises in how each file is named, which is out of my control. There's not really a standardized way of how people title videos, so sometimes there will be a word starting in lowercase when it should be upper case, and the like. The ones where it's like "Album Name | Song Name" is easy to deal with, as I can just go into the terminal and replace all instances of "Album Name" to an empty string "", so that the result is "Song Name", but the capitalization of some words is the annoying part. In this case, it takes more time to get the metadata for the songs as I have to manually edit the title of the song to match that of the one stored in the database, but hey, it's still better than manually entering the metadata for 500+ songs, right?
I also realized that I'm running out of steam for programming, and with still no luck in finding a job, I decided that November will be the month where I fully delve into full-stack development and continue on with LeetCode on the side. I already have a project in mind, but I'm gonna do some serious learning and improving this month, which should hopefully mean more updates here.

So if you want to build a physical music collection (in that you have the tracks on a hard drive or computer rather than streaming them). This is what I recommend:
Figure out what you’re storing your music on. I prefer iTunes/Music bc I have a mac. Your chosen program has some import settings! These make the difference between your songs sounding near studio quality vs coming from a tin can on a string. On Mac I prefer Apple Lossless Encoding file format ALAC. There’s a guide here on how to do that. This makes your files bigger but keeps your music quality high.
Check out your local library. Most have a CD collection. Find out what they require for a library card and get one set up.
Go through their CD collection in person or peruse online. Some libraries have a consortium in place where media is shared between multiple physical centers. I like being able to peruse their CD’s online, place holds for everything I’m looking for, then stop by to pick them up.
Import all those binches into your computer. If your computer doesn’t come with a disk drive you can buy an attachment disk drive to do so. My library specifically states on receipts how much money I’m saving by using them and its a three digit number every time. You can. Right now. Go to your library and check out a ton of music and have it forever. And don’t feel bad like you’re doing something wrong, your library will be ecstatic with your interest.
Some libraries go beyond music too. I’m going to have played God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy XVI, and Armored Core 6 all through my public library. Its also how I’ve watched the dnd movie, venom 2, soul, turning red, encanto, all without spending a dime. Mine also has physical items for checkout including modern gaming consoles, a candle maker, and a telescope.
🅱️lease check out your library. You will be happier for it.

If This Was A Movie (You'd Be On Speak Now) (Taylor's Version)
Credits to @speaknowtaylor for the hook.
[Verse 1] Last night I heard my own heart beating Sounded like footsteps on my stairs Midnight passed and I'm still reaching Even though I looked everywhere
I was going through a thousand playlists, baby Finally found you on YouTube Then I almost thought that I was going crazy 'Cause it looked wrong, but then I knew
[Chorus] Come back, come back, come back to me like You were the old If This Was A Movie Back in your spot, right where you first came out Come back, come back, come back to me like You could without her rewriting history I know that we could meet again somehow But if this was a movie, you'd be on Speak Now
[Verse 2] These are re-records and these things happen But I remember how it was back then It was 2010, I was there at Target 'Cause there were three new songs, I was shopping for them
Now I'm pacing down the hall, feeling incomplete Flashback to the night when she said to me "Have some bonus tracks, just for me and you" Back before I knew it was a crafty ruse
[Chorus] Come back, come back, come back to me like You were the old If This Was A Movie Back in your spot, right where you first came out Come back, come back, come back to me like You could without her rewriting history I know that we could meet again somehow But if this was a movie, you'd be on Speak Now
[Bridge] If you're out there, if you're somewhere, I'm not moving on I've be waiting for you [UNINTELLIGIBLE] since you've been gone I just want it back the way it was before The way I used to see you back on iTunes Store
And I say come back, come back, come back to me like You would before she shoved you with Love Story That fateful night, she went and tossed you out But it should've been Speak Now
[Chorus] Come back, come back, come back to me like You were the old If This Was A Movie Back in your spot, right where you first came out Come back, come back, come back to me like You could without her gaslighting tendency I know that we could meet again somehow But if this was a movie, you'd be on Speak Now
[Outro] You'd be on Speak Now It's not the kind of tracklist you wanna see now Baby, what about the tracklist? Oh, I thought you'd be on Speak Now That you'd be on Speak Now

It's Panic Thursday
Remember that the first week that VIBE dropped, ARMY was able to purchase 10,000 copies on the very last day of tracking. We can absolutely help ANGEL chart well this first week too, and get Jimin that new record.
Please buy the long and sped up version of Angel Pt 1 on all available stores, including the Fast X Soundtrack site, iTunes, Amazon, Qobus, and 7 Digital, then immediately download the digital files and play them for a few seconds.
If you have multiple streaming accounts, perhaps dedicate one just to focus on Angel Pt 1 today, especially on Pandora, which lets you loop and rack up streams fast.
Note that Spotify has FOUR VERSIONS you should be including 20 times each!
If all you did was max out your 80 plays with back to back Angel versions, it would take you four straight hours. We know best practice is to have 1-2 songs as fillers, (Like Crazy, Planet, and Haegeum are good choices) so that means today we really gotta focus with the remaining hours in the tracking day.
While I have you here, please vote for Jimin in this cute little poll as the best choice to dub a Disney movie! The voting results will be published in a Danmee article for Japanese and Korean media, as well as about 50 companies, after June 5th.
It won't win him anything, I just think it would be nice to put his voice acting talents on the radar with various media company executives. You only have to vote once, so it's low-effort! And I just can't bare to see our boy lose. :-)
Thank you, puppykitties! FIGHTING!!!!!
