There’s a light on in an upstairs window.

A shadow ebbing through the soft warm glow tells Marc that it wasn’t left on by mistake; there’s someone else inside. But another intruder wouldn’t have turned a light on, unless they were dead stupid, so whoever’s inside is allowed to be.

He’ll have to be careful.

It’s a little past two in the morning when Marc sticks a pick into the keyhole of a maintenance entrance and enters the great stone building. As to be expected in this old library, no alarm or security camera pings the signal detector on his watch. He relaxes, still keeping his steps quiet, and hopes that this strange directive from Khonshu would remain simply strange and not complicated.

“Why do you need me to steal an old book?”

“It’s not a book in the way your human mind is limited to understand,” Khonshu explained. Marc didn’t pretend to look interested or unbothered, but some secret place found relief in the lack the command to end another evil life.

“The Ennead Codex contains matters of great importance, and it is in danger of falling into the hands of those who wish to access the underworld.”

Whatever that means, Marc thought. He didn’t question it further. Really, he didn’t care all that much. It was just another task from his master.

Without many more words, Khonshu told Marc where the sacred manuscripts had been hidden for the past several decades. They’d been moved to this seemingly insignificant library in a small town.

Hidden in plain sight.

As Marc lifts a brass handle and slips through a dark walnut door into the main chambers of the library, he doesn’t bother donning the suit. He’d probably slip in and out undetected, harnessing his years of covert ops.

For a small town, the room is towering and impressive and beautiful. Filtered through a expanse of glass in the ceiling, moonlight casts its judgement across the carved stone pillars of the rotunda. Patches of dark blue carpet are dimly aglow with the help of the night sky, until Marc casts his own shadow across them.

He walks past the circular desk that sits in the dead centre of the room, now having clocked the sign for the Reference section where Khonshu said the Codex may be hidden.

The shelves are shrouded in darkness as he approaches and searches for the number “202.” He doesn’t get very far before the hairs on the back of his neck pique his fight or flight.

His right hand meets the gun at his side, pointer finger itching to meet the strength of the trigger, and a small clicking noise on the other side of the room sends him slipping behind a pillar.

He waits, listens, tries to discern where the sound came from. Footsteps. Coming towards the centre of the room.

Towards him.

Marc slows his breathing to keep it quiet. He wonders if the other presence in the library can sense him in the way he could sense them. Sure, years of tactical training hone the senses, but there’s also a distinct human instinct that tells someone when they’re not alone. He swallows hard when he remembers that it’s possible this other presence is not human.

“I know you’re in here,” a voice echoes through the aisles and up to the ceiling. Sounds human enough. She doesn’t sound afraid so she probably has a weapon. Marc tightens his grip on the gun, readying to draw.

“Come on out,” you command, sounding a little impatient.

You don’t declare a weapon. He doesn’t hear the safety of a pistol disengage, or the cocking of a shotgun, so he emerges from the shadows with a hand on his holstered gun.

You look sharp and powerful, standing in the centre of the room. Empty hands hang by your side - no visible weapon - you tilt your head, intrigued when you see the intruder. The light of the early morning moon chisels harshly against your features, projecting something familiar and severe towards the man who’d broken in.

“What are you doing here?” Your voice is accusing. You take a step towards him, head lowering to show him an unwavering, disarming stare. There’s a flicker of hostility and a glint of gold in your eyes that numbs his tongue just long enough to be too long. “English?” You stop walking and set your jaw. You look like a normal person.

“Yeah, English,” Marc finds his words and quickly assesses you, your stance, the outline of your body. There’s no bulkiness to your clothing, there’s no tension that gives away a readiness to strike; you’re no threat to him. There’s time to grab the book and get out before the small-town cops arrived.

“I’ll be out of your hair in a minute. No one needs to get hurt.” He says it as he turns away from you and you immediately call out after him.

“I won’t let you take it.”

He turns back and narrows his eyes in question.

“I know what you’re here for,” your fingers begin to curl into fists, your chest rises with a breath of preparation. “You need to leave. Now.”

Marc’s eyes flick to your growing battle posture, and he begins to summons the suit.

The exhales of the old pages lining the bookshelves glitter dust through the streams of moonlight. The same moonlight from which Khonshu’s vessel draws the power he begins to feel pulsing through his fingertips, through his chest and the back of his head. He lowers the hand from his gun and looks you dead in the eye. Marc sees another glimmer of gold. It was so fast, if he’d been blinking he’d have missed it. He juts his chin in challenge. “Who are you?”

“Leave,” is your only answer. “I won’t tell you again.”

The room fills with a gentle thundering the second your hands close into fists. Books, across every shelf, buzz with a strange power. The light fixtures are barely swinging, there’s no dust falling from the ceilings, but the shelves are alive with a ferocity you held. No more time to waste.

Lunar silver fills Marc’s vision as the sacred suit fixes tightly around him. He can’t leave here without that Codex. He’s fully prepared to fight you for it.

He positions himself into a stance ready to defend and to attack, watching with bated breath as you see his suit take place. The moment the ceremonial garb fits the last swath to Marc’s skin, you raise your fists.

The room falls quiet. The books fall still.

Marc waits, he listens, he watches as you determine he’s a bigger threat than you’d thought. It looks like you’re bleeding energy to hold your fists above your head, like you’re holding great power. Then, he notices the stream of moonlight begin to dilute. A warm, golden light begins emanating from the bookshelves. From the books themselves.

In a move too swift to predict, you draw your arms down towards your chest and fall to one knee.

A thread of light shoots from what looks to be every page in the room, blasting towards you before he has the chance to blink. Marc has to shield his eyes and again duck behind the pillar to protect himself from a glare so bright he was sure it rivalled the sun’s surface. It’s overpowering, debilitating, even through his tightly shut eyes, he throws his face against the crook of his elbow until he can sense the light begin to wane.

He emerges from the pillar fully prepared to attack, but stops in his tracks when he sees you rise to your feet.

You had transformed.

In a way that was all too familiar.

Golden cuffs circle your wrists, upper arms, your collar adorned with twists of gold and ivory. The breastplate of your armour is blanched leather bordered in the bones of an ancient being. A white cloth drapes around your waist, falling halfway down your legs. Your shins are wrapped in the same cloth, down to where your ankles are cuffed in gold above your bare feet.

Marc hold up his hands in surrender when he eyes the long golden staff in your white-knuckled grip. Not because he thought he couldn’t win, but because it looked like something he’d seen before. “I think we’re on the same side here.”

You smirk, scoff through your nose and point the staff at him. “Anyone attempting to steal the Ennead Codex is on no side of ours.”

“I’m not trying to steal it,” Marc drops the hood and lets the cloth peel back from his face. To show you his eyes in an appeal for trust. You didn’t waver. “I was sent to retrieve it.”

A raised eyebrow tells Marc that, to you, it’s the same fucking thing.

He holds his breath and asks, “Who do you serve?”

He watches you examine him. His suit. He watches as you realise you have a lot more in common than you’d care to admit; somehow, somewhere along the way, your lives ended up in the hands of beings too powerful to comprehend.

You don’t lower your staff as you say, with pride and strength in your voice, “I am the Scribe of Seshat. Tasked with protecting the Ennead Codex, and any knowledge those would seek out to use for destruction.” Marc takes a step forward and you don’t like that. With a single nod up, you counter, “Your turn.” Your grip on the hook-ended staff tightens. He doesn’t flinch.

“I am the Fist of Khonshu. Tasked with protecting travellers of the night.” He only stops when he’s a step away from the end of your staff. “Khonshu sent me to retrieve the Codex.”

You pull the sharp hook away, planting the lower end back on the floor beside your feet, and the books thunder for half a second. Again, Marc doesn’t flinch.

After several moments of tense, insular processing, you fix your eyes on a shelf behind your intruder and you begin to look nervous. “Seshat said this day would come.” You then meet his eye with an openness he hadn’t expected. “I just didn’t think it would be this soon.”

“Seshat doesn’t sit on the Ennead Council,” Marc subtly probes, keenly watching the way you’d react.

“No,” you confirm. “Never wants to. The only reason she has an Avatar is to keep them at bay. Seshat wants nothing to do with the Council…” you begin to walk past him, pausing at his side to add, “Especially Khonshu.”

You keep walking so Marc turns his body towards you, and don’t tell him to stay or back off so he follows as you enter the darkened rows.

Your barefooted steps are automatic and confident, carrying you to near the end of a nondescript shelf of reference material. After a moment of pause, reverence, and reflection, you place your hand on the spine of a thick book and chant a few words under your breath. It glows gold for a moment before changing appearance and sliding out into your hand.

Marc watches you caress the edges of the pages and look at the Ennead Codex as if it were something you truly cared for. Truly believed in.

He holds out a hand and promises, “I won’t let anything happen to it.”

Your head snaps towards him and he sees a startling intensity in your eye, along with those flecks of gold. “I know you won’t,” you start, “because the Codex isn’t leaving my sight.” Marc opens his mouth to protest but your protective grip tightens and you set your jaw. “I am the keeper of this Codex. I go where it goes.”

Marc shakes his head once. “Not gonna happen.”

“It’s not up for debate.”

“Don’t make me take it from you.”

A new low rumbling begins all around. Your eyes don’t leave each other as a smirk peaks into the corner of your mouth. “A sliver of waning moonlight versus a roomful of knowledge… do you like your chances against me in my domain, Moon Knight?”

Marc’s stomach lurches, though he gives no outward indication. Moon Knight. He didn’t tell you that name.

Your eyes burn gold, brightening every moment you build the power you’re pulling from the sources around you. Marc bites his tongue and assesses the situation as the library fills with the show of the ancient being you carry the mark of.

Marc arrives at the conclusion that, if you are indeed a vessel for Seshat, fighting you here would be a losing battle. He has no advantage. So, like a good Marine, he knows when to call the retreat. He knows when to compromise, and he does so with a gentle lift of his hands in surrender.

Your eyes return to normal, the books stop readying themselves for battle, and you brush past him with the Codex in your hands. He turns, recovering quickly, and starts after you. “How d’you-”

“Know that name?” You suddenly stop and turn. Marc’s body almost crashes against yours but he stops on a dime and plants one foot behind him, giving you two at least a little bit of personal space. You look him up and down before levelling him with a single look. “How do I, Avatar of the great Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge, the goddess who invented writing and record-keeping… how do I know who you are?”

Your rhetorical question hangs in the air like the smirk lingers on your lips. After a few moments, Marc nods and sticks his tongue against the inside of his cheek. “We’ll go together to Khonshu, then go our separate ways.”

After, in silence, you reminisce on what Seshat had told you about this day that would come, you nod. “Fine. But if you try to take this from me, I’m gone.”

He gestures around and tries to look unimpressed. “Do you need to do a little light show to change outfits or…?”

He drops the suit in a matter of seconds, before showing a forced and sarcastic smile. Without breaking eye contact, your own garb seamlessly transforms back into the simple clothes you’d been wearing when you first walked in. Your height lifts by an inch when the sneakers finally form around your feet, and you don’t waste a second to turn and begin walking back towards the door from which you and Marc both came. “Keep up, Moon Boy.”

Marc huffs a low grunt, takes a deep breath to ground himself, and sets his jaw before following after you.

This was supposed to be a simple in-and-out, not a full-on extraction. He was here for the Codex, and now that you’ll be leaving your power source he’ll have to look after you until gods know when.

Spoilers below the cut

So there’s a couple things I wanna pull out and pick apart:

1) the Demon, Kabru, Shuro, and Namari all come to the same conclusion about Laios, though Kabru’s our most obvious human analog; he also guides the Canaries’ impressions and is the captain of team “We Gotta Kill This Man”

The assumption they’re all making is actually a little more complicated though; all of them actually have all of the evidence to see that Laios cares about humans right in front of their faces

The Winged Lion hears him say it to its face in the dream

Kabru has been saved and protected by Laios twice this week in situations where he was completely helpless, and would never have known if Laios had just passed them by except that he might not have woken up at all

(Unconscious/paralysed on the Spirit Possession Level, dead on the water level with a Water Walk that will time out)

Shuro and Namari have travelled with him the longest and know full well that whenever it comes to it, Laios kills the monsters to protect his human companions

But they all assume that because Laios understands the monsters so much better than humans, that must be all he cares about

And to their credit, Shuro, Namari, and Kabru all do hesitate over that conclusion, and do have the sense that Laios wouldn’t want to hurt anyone; they just assume he won’t care not to, because he’s socially awkward

Because he does actually hurt humans pretty often by his “carelessness” and utter inability to understand social rules (hurt feelings, defo same scale as cheerfully killing monsters)

But he understands the monsters so well, that they assume that if he cared, he’d understand humans the same way

(Kabru especially because his Special Interest is people in the literal exact same way Laios’ is monsters)

So the Winged Lion is doomed to failure by its own inherent ableism, while Shuro, Namari, and Kabru all come to the same conclusion in the end; that yeah, Laios is inept and he sure as hell doesn’t understand human society, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care, or that he’d let anything bad happen to people

2) the succubus fucking casting shade at Laios the entire time. Just

“Of course I’m not a succubus, if I was a succubus you’d just look at me and be immobilised, which is how it’s supposed to work, what succubus would put up with having to do this much bullshit”

Laios’ own understanding of the monsters is what persuades him to let his guard down; he perceives them as operating under immutable rules, so when the succubus behaves in a slightly different way than he expects he’s completely caught off guard

Because yeah, the succubus’ trick works on most people! Given the sass, we can guess that while this is a problem they can handle, it’s not one they deal with often. They’re even adaptable to the two hearts of beastkin, although it doesn’t actually work

Laios makes a valid assumption based on the information he has - and as we see all series long, that information is usually complete enough that he’s very rarely wrong

As we see when he’s freaking out over the winged lion in particular, Laios prefers monsters and understands them better because he can get a grasp of their instincts, drives, and needs - which to his mind, makes them predictable

He has his own baby breakdown over this which is much less dramatic than Marcille and Kabru’s later on, but when you actually look at it…

These are mostly the same problems Laios has with people. That last panel especially; he can’t tell what drives their actions, can’t predict what they’re going to do next, and doesn’t understand what to do about them

When the succubus behaves in a way he can’t predict, he’s instantly entrapped; it doesn’t occur to him that he might just be the exception to the rule (which, to be fair, it’s kinda hard to definitively know you just plain don’t have a “type”, especially in your early 20s; I didn’t work it out til the mid-lates)

When the demon doesn’t have the kinds of basic drives he’s used to, he’s completely stalled out on what to do about it… until it gives its own little spiel about what it wants and plants the seeds of its own defeat

I've been thinking about Laios' succubus lately. Mulling it over a bit.

Because I've seen these pages brought up a fair bit, but almost entirely in the context of shipping (on all sides, really). And I really want to understand what they are doing for the story beyond that.

When I went back to reread the scene and section, a few things caught my interest: the way Laios responds to both forms of his succubus, the themes of the volume the chapter is found in, and the other events of the chapter itself.

So let's dive into those three things, and what I think they say about the succubus scene's purpose.

Laios is never fully frozen by the succubus

So. If you compare Marcille and Chilchuck's reactions...

to Laios':

There is a difference. Sure, the basics may look the same once it turns into Scylla Marcille, but even then, it functions differently.

Chilchuck and Marcille are completely frozen once they catch sight of their succubus. Izutsumi, as well, isn't able to look away, and completely freezes up once her 'mom' starts talking to her. As Chilchuck describes, "just looking at them makes you unable to move."

And yet, Scylla Marcille has to actively convince Laios to comply. He even looks away from her at one point!

Laios accepts this succubus, but he is never actually helpless to it in the same way. Taken in? Convinced? Sure, at least enough to let things happen that he probably should question more than he does. But magically compelled? Not really. Not the same way as everyone else is. So that's interesting. But let's move on for now.

2. Volume 9 is all about drive and desire

I don't often look at chapters within the context of the volume they are included in, but I think there's some really fun things to be found with that perspective in mind.

For one, volume 9 starts with an exploration of what desire brought Laios to the dungeon:

And ends with a question of what desire brought Laios to the dungeon:

It's also very concerned in general with questions of why people do what they do. Why they are in the dungeon, why they are with the people they are with, why they stay, what they fight for.

In addition to Laios, we see it with Marcille...

Izutsumi

Kabru

and Mithrun

Hell, we even get it for the demon!

It's certainly not the only volume concerned with desires and motives, but it is particularly focused on these ideas.

The succubus scene fits quite well into the ongoing question about desires, especially Laios' desires. It is even placed at an interesting spot within the volume. The volume is six chapters long, and the scene takes place at the start of the 4th chapter. It's almost smack-dab in the middle.

With all this in mind, it is interesting that, with both versions of the succubus Marcille, it's not totally clear which parts of her Laios is rejecting.

The first version of Marcille looks human, but Laios attacks when he identifies her as a monster. The second Marcille looks like a monster, but he seems to believe that she is the real (human)(ish) person that he knows. So is he rejecting the monster at first, and then accepting the person? Or is he rejecting humanity and only interested in the monstrous?

Something to consider as we look at the next point...

3. the rest of the chapter is a seduction, too

This is one of those things that might not be apparent on a first reading, but is crystal clear on a revisit. We see the succubus try and charm Laios over 7 pages, and then see the Winged Lion do the same thing for the next 19.

Much like the succubus, it offers the mingling of monsters and humans. Much like the succubus, it offers belonging.

(and this is the point where I absolutely must also link this post by fumifooms on the succubus, which has some great ideas on how the scene is informed by Laios' trauma and desire for acceptance!!!)

But, back to the point. The Winged Lion wants to feed on Laios just as much as the succubus did, and it uses similar strategies to try and make that happen. Though this chapter isn't really the turning point for the next Lord of the Dungeon (it is Marcille who will, eventually, become the Lion's next victim), it certainly behaves like it is.

Laios is convinced. The succubus gets its meal. By the end of the volume, the reader begins to understand how concerning his desires are. Together, it is all very good at building up that sense of dread and pending disaster, as we see exactly how and why Laios might just fall into the Lion's open arms and bring about the end of the world.

So that's the three things I noticed. But there's still something I want to touch on by looking at the way these observations overlap, and what they reveal, together.

As I said, by the end of the volume, you can feel the tension growing. Just as Kabru and Mithrun do, you look back for an answer to the questions that have been built, chapter by chapter: why is Laios here? Where will his loyalties fall? This chapter, and scene, seem to prove the inevitable truth: he will choose the monster, of course. He will choose the seductive, easy power of the Winged Lion.

But the details of what actually happens tell different story: one in which the Lion is wrong.

First, as a reminder - even in Scylla Marcille mode, the succubus never fully entrances Laios. It convinces him, but it doesn't have him completely under its thrall.

Similarly, in the dream, the Lion does convince Laios to embrace the world he is offering. But even within that dream, Laios continues to ask questions that will be vital to him later. It is because of those questions that Laios comes to a new understanding about Thistle.

And it's this realization that he cites later as part of his reason for refusing the Lion's offer.

He is thinking through things the entire time, just like he continues to question the succubus even after it turns into Scylla Marcille.

Laios also expresses an interesting reason for why he wants to see the future of this world. He's not just invested because it would mean people liking what he likes, or him getting to spend time with monsters. The thought that comes immediately before his acceptance is about what he wants for monsters and people.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this statement - "we're living beings that share the same world, but all we can do is keep killing each other" - can apply to the various humans races just as much as it does to humans and monsters. The thing he is thinking about here isn't just a matter of his personal daydreams. It's an idea that underpins every conflict in the story.

Laios caring about how people as well as monsters in this manner is something that the Lion gets wrong every time. Even at the end, he still frames Laios' desires entirely around hating people and loving monsters.

The Lion has heard him express an opinion about the future of the world! It happened right there in the dream, right in front of him! He just didn't take it seriously, and didn't view it through any lens other than "Laios likes monsters more".

He's convinced that he understands how to get to Laios. Maybe the Lion can't truly see everything, or maybe his vision into everyone's deepest desires has made it hard for him to realize how much choice still matters. That people can, and do, choose which desires to act on, and how to act on them.

Whatever the case, he's wrong about Laios, and the story shows us this over and over again.

After all, look at how the succubus interaction plays out:

A monster uses Marcille to appeal to Laios...

He realizes that something about the situation is wrong, and rejects her.

It changes strategies, and makes new offer: to turn him into a monster.

It also assures him that his friends are, or will be, taken care of.

He accepts. Or rather, allows the monster to have its way with him.

But Laios is not as helpless as he initially appears, and what the Lion thinks is a successful seduction also contains the seed of an idea that will allow Laios to later resist him.

We even get to see Izutsumi playing a similar role in both instances, as the one person fully able to take action in the face to the illusion.

The story lays out what is going happen, and then explicitly tells us that the demon and the succubus are thematically related.

The chapter performs a great sleight of hand here - everything about it seems to indicate that Laios is doomed give in to the option to have his deepest desires realized. But if you look closer, it also contains the evidence that he won't. There's a lot more going on for him.

Yes, he still falls for obvious tricks. He is still extremely into monsters, and he still doesn't feel like he fits in with other people. He may, deep down, crave to surrender to the monstrous - to let it absorb him. But he questions more than he seems to. He considers more than people realize. He cares so much more than anyone gives him credit for.

And I think this is part of why we see the succubus called back to so many times, especially with the wolf head addition to his Monster Form, which he specifically added due to his encounter with the Scylla Marcille.

This all stays with Laios. It doesn't just foreshadow the path of the story, it is fundamental to how and why he walks that path. It's not about him choosing monsters, and it's not about him choosing people. It's about how he considers both, and cares about both.

And it's about the forces that think they already know his answer. Mithrun and Kabru. The Winged Lion. The succubus.

It's about how they are wrong.

Episode 1 of Vanitas no Carte? MARVELOUS.

Maybe it's because I am very excited but I love everything about it, TTwTT it did not disappoint. The animation? Smooth, beautiful, mesmerizing. Holy shit, the background music??? I AM IN LOVE.

There's so many things to say about it fr.

I love the way the introduction was drawn in linear wobbly drawings, it's beautiful, it's perfect, it conveys that feeling so well.

Sora to Utsoro by Sasanomaly is such a great song and the lyricss??? This song fits Noé so well, and you cannot convince me that is not adding subtext for Noé's feelings and POV. The OP is so sweet and warm and I loveeeee getting that Noé fix because I love Noé YwY 💜

I love how they start building up the world by slowly talking about it, like the Chasseurs being mentioned or the comment about astermite fueling the Ship, and ofc the more direct explanations like the vampires true name, the reality writing and the malnomens/maladies. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED AGAIN ON THE MUSIC AND ANIMATION, the way when Vanitas is explaining malnomens and the visuals have this sort of static going on? and the changes in music??? MAJESTIC.

Ofc it's amazing, the anime so far is sticking to the manga completely, and it was amazing watching some of those scenes and see how they played around with the cinematics. Like the chibis and soft pastels when it's comedic, the fighting scene was oh lala (oh my Noé moving around and the vampire eyes showing aksldjskdk), and oh gawd the change in chromatic visuals to reds and black when the malnomen finally showed up??? the black tears and black goo??? the e y e s?? 👀✨👌🏼

And then, oh kaltenecker, and then,, that scene full of blue hues where Vanitas is a complete badass and we get a bunch of super cool close shots of the book? I adoooore how they animated the book working and rewriting reality, the sort of lightning buzzing blue. I was really curious as to how they would bring this to life and I am not disappointed ✨✨ S/O to Dante! Who still hasn't gotten an official presentation but seeing him is still amazing.

AND OH KALTENECKER, the following scene? How Noé is stunned by Vanitas, and immediately jumps to fall with him? And then we see Paris from his eyes? That shit almost made me cry, and the music I- I need this whole soundtrack 😭💜✨

And then we get hit with Noé being an absolute cutiepie, being amazed once again; and Vanitas doing a pompous presentation and offer to be straight up declined by Noé 😂😂 and the colors are kinda dark and cold but they have light! And then we hear the narration start, church's bells ringing and the light is abruptly diminished.

Ok. Full spoilers now.

Let's stop there for a second. Cuz watching that animated took the breath out of me and made me realize some stuff too.

The together wanderer life's pain has Jeanne and Luca, whom we know then become part of the Vanitas' Squad and they go through stuff. We then see how they speak about how Noé got/gained Domi in his life and its the friendship he cherishes most; but by being in the Sade's life he also lost Louis in the process Q^Q (he won his bestest friend, but he also lost his bestest friend). And Roland?? That reference as to how much Roland will have to lose? Because as a chasseur his eyes have been opened by Noé and Vanitas to the reality of vampires and humans, and he now has no place among the Chasseurs as he doesn't align with their beliefs anymore even though being a Chasseur was his whole life.

And this one is interesting,

"and then at the end of our journey I slayed him with my own hands"...

ok... then WHY, WHY do we get a flash of Loki Oriflamme???

Well, I present you this theory.

Ok, now that you've read that. This is what I think could be the reason:

Loki is Monsieur Spider. We know Loki is Lord Ruthven's son, and that he is cursed... and "doesn't wants to be saved" according to his dad... We also know that Monsieur Spider is working with Charlatan, and he was working with Moreau too. We also see mentioned that Moreau was able to reconstruct his lab and continue his experiments (same experiments that resulted in Vanitas being Vanitas) with the help of "someone". We also know that Lord Ruthven is working with Charlatan and has influence and power enough to make that happen. That "someone" was Ruthven, and though as of now we still quite don't get the full extent of his intentions and plans, we KNOW it's him pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Lord Ruthven also tried getting Noé on his side and when failed, ended up forcing a curse onto Noé, so technically speaking Noé could slay Vanitas with his own hand by Ruthven's command. Basing it on how Vanitas has been acting through around Mémoires 50ish, I assume he is acting under a curse too (Blue Moon telling him no one could take his memories) and that avoiding it must be impossible/near impossible. So where does Loki fit? Why flash Loki? My guess is that Loki will be the catalytic towards Vanitas 'death' whatever that means, Ruthven will set this up and it will include Noé as the culmination of the plan, maybe Noé is trying to rescue Vanitas from whatever Loki causes and on that last decisive moment... Lord Ruthven's order will prevent Noé from grabbing Vanitas' hand 👁️💧👄💧👁️

[0(Zero)] by LMYK is such an amazing song too. And once again, the lyrics oml. This ending sets the contrast between Vanitas and Noé, we can see this from the images quite literally. And if I had to guess this is probably closer to Vanitas pov? idk. The lyrics hit right to the heart, specially when paired with the ED sequence. It speaks of how they complement each other, they are oftenly parallels, like water and oil, red and blue, and yet both have that which the other needs or lack. Noé believes in Vanitas vision and tries to understand him, and Vanitas teaches him how mercy sometimes is a way of salvation too. And that's amazing and touching and all that though we know Vanitas is an emotionally constipated hardhead, but the ANGST. it's palpable

We know how Vanitas thinks of himself, and we know hoe Noé thinks of Vanitas. "Was it you who I've been searching for? Spent my life alone and waiting for, so tenderly and endlessly you make me whole, you make me whole.

The first part we get with a scene of Vanitas, alone, writhing, looking hopeless. This is how Vanitas feels about himself. He hates himself he is wrapped in his own conception of being a monster incapable of feeling and receiving love or empathy. He does good and claims it's vengeance, he saves people and vampires yet still conceives himself not being worthy of being saved or cared for.

And the second part is what Noé is to this perception Vanitas has of himself. We know how Noé over and over again is amazed by Vanitas, and he is amazed because he thinks of Vanitas as that good he has been searching for, someone who cares and saves both humans and vampires; and he sees Vanitas sacrifices and efforts, and he doesn't buys that bs Vanitas spills about not being worthy, or about being a pos. And he tells Vanitas this many times! And we get this paired with an image of Noé reaching out to Vanitas. how fucking POETIC. But hey, that's not all! Because we see that Vanitas is completely still, only Noé moves; I've seen someone saying this is because its more a memory and thus more about how Noé recreates it and still wants to reach Vanitas? I too think it's about their dynamic, about how Vanitas has given up on himself and yet Noé believes in him and reaches out.

And yeah, ofc, it's the fact that this scene mimics the scene we get in the manga's 11th mémoire with the "The regrets of that day, I couldn't grab your hand" of Noé not being able to reach Vanitas's hand in time as mentioned above QwQ

i loved it, i really thought it was just goofy and soft and i do love the moments where we see the characters just calm down and have some sweet downtime where nothing is wrong. just dorks being dorks

a bit of an odd choice but this entire fucking episode was golden and i have been thinking of this slight parallel for a while, if there even is one, hell this could just me be clowning real hard but the uses of each others names during this episode is just super intriguing to me like the panic and the worry just makes it all so much more phenomenal to me. i know this doesn’t make a lot of sense but is anyones interested i could probably make a separate post about it cause other wise i won’t stop rambling here lmao-

3) “there’s no one in the world i trust with my son more than you.” (3x03)

this scene took one swing at me and put me in a full coma and i haven’t recovered since and i LOVED it- ALL of it. the shoulder grab. the eye contact. it’s amazing, i adore it and i adore this scene too. the implications of it all god the gentleness- buck and eddie have said i love you to each a thousand times before the words were ever spoken and this to me is one of my favorites.

2) the hospital scene (4x14)

they put something in this scene cause i can’t explain why it’s so fucking addictive. this gave us so much content all of which i love especially the will talk and the “because, evan-” it’s a great scene and i absolutely love it!

1) the end of (4x13)

okay- i might be a little fucked for this one but it is legitimately one of my favorite scenes mainly cause i go feral for subtext- jesus like this scene is laced with it. i love the unspoken moment of panic and desperation, these huge waves of emotions that come in so silently for buck and eddie like it’s only about 40 seconds in its entirety but i remember watching this feeling like it was 5 minutes long or something. oliver and ryan both did fantastic jobs acting this one out cause good lord the pain i felt was real. (fun fact! i had to skip class the next day because i literally couldn’t think of anything else except this scene) visually it was beautiful too and the reaching out!! (chefs kiss) amazing!
